I can’t believe it’s already two years that you’re in your van been watching you for two years and enjoy your videos and hope your channel continues to grow
I understand that you love your Volta system, I get it. That said, you make it sound like it's binary choice, Volta or Generator. My van is 100% electric and we cook, run the hair drier, etc. (Except AC) without the outrageous cost of a Volta. I have 250 AH lithium battery, 2000 watt pure Sine Wave Inverter. The batteries are recharged by solar, the 220 amp alternator or charger if plugged in or running our generator (which is rare). Yes, we have a generator. We live in Florida and power outages after a hurricane can last a while. Since our van is our hurricane "escape pod", I carry a generator for long term use of the AC. It's so quiet, you can barely hear it running.
Thank you Dan. here we Learn - Share - You Decide what is best for you and the way you RV. I try to make it binary generator VS Volta so people can make an educated decision. Many Travato K and G (non-lithium) people tell me over and over they wish they had a Volta system.. Glad you are happy with your set up.
Dan, you make a good point. There are in-between systems. Options options always a good thing. However, the cost of a RV factory-intalled generator and solar is pretty high, making the alternative cost of a factory-installed lithium system worth considering....and buying. Once you amortize all systems, you find lithium to be more than competitive. Why boogie woogie when you can rock and roll?!
If I were buying a Winnebago, I'd go Volta for sure. We had our converted and they installed the solar and battery. I added the generator on a Stowaway cargo hitch. I've only had to use it once or twice but when you need it, it's worth it.
@@dandial3733 better than a generator is a second alternator. No maintenance and 150 amps at idle and 250 while driving. Plus in South Florida I blow cold air while charging my 600 lithium amps in my Promaster.
@@michaelconchscooter8940 IInstalling my generator was inexpensive and easy. I don't have to run my main engine to get AC when I need it for extended periods of time. In addition, there have been multiple incidents of the second alternator belt cutting an engine coolant hose...even on the RV manufacturer models that are equipped with it. All that said, I'm a big fan of "If it works for you, that's all that counts.".
Often overlooked fact about the Idaho State Capital Building: In addition to having good WIFI, it is the ONLY Capital Building in the United States that is heated by geothermal steam/water that was tapped deep below the building.
Perfect timing on your video! I am at the end of a month long plank challenge and today was almost 5 minutes. Made it through being distracted by all the helpful hints in your video. Love showing the library access outside and inside, sunsets, sun rise, capital buildings. Luke always looks super excited!
Scott - when discussing the Volta system keep in mind that many more folks have a generator than have the latest Volta system. Please discuss the trade offs of one over the other. You and Kevin are the top and perhaps only popular Travato channels right now and so your audience is overwhelmingly non-Volta. Do mention the cost of the Volta. From what I have seen as a Travato 59k owner the Volta adds $20,000 to the initial cost plus the delete of the generator which is a $3,500 item so $23,500 initial cost. Do these numbers seem right? I think that the importance of the Volta depends on where you live and travel and how much time you will spend on the road. Also it depends on if you have pets. For my wife and I we live in Portland, Oregon and travel weekends mostly, not retired, no pets. Parks are nice and cost under $40 a day for full service although not easy to book a space. A/C is rarely needed. We found a 700 watt coffee maker to run off the battery / inverter. For us only the microwave needs the generator. Also we are looking in to getting a better muffler system, looks like a resonator cures the odd snapping sounds from the exhaust pipe, still going to be noisy though. Cost was a consideration for us and after an intensive nation wide search we found a 1 year old 59k with 5k miles and none of the kitchen had been used. Our cost was 70k plus travel expense to Phoenix and maybe a 1k in out of warranty small fixes so far. Yes even nearly new Travato’s will have a list of minor flaws to be corrected. Let me know if you want to see my list of things to fix or fixed. The most frustrating one was the carburetor on the generator had to be replaced because the generator had not been used! That’s right you have to use it or loose it because of the ethanol gas which fouls carburetors if it sits in there too long. $600 to $900 at Onan and not covered by the 3 year warranty. Many we found in this price range were previous full timers or had many more miles and use. Now if we were in the Southern US and had pets for sure the Volta would make life so much easier. Is it possible to get a brand new 59KL for $110k??? The lowest price I see advertised right now on RV Trader for a Volta equipped Travato is a 2020 National Park with 34k miles at $100k. Also if you do not have Volta you cannot watch TV all day and have any power for a coffee maker the next morning with just batteries on a generator van. In the 6 months we have owed ours we actually have only used the generator once. So if you have one and start the generator everyday you need a Volta, if you can afford the extra cost.
I just scored a 2019 GL for $113k, total, from Canada… 6,k miles...Shipped it to me on a flatbed! I have a question about the inverter… The noise drives me nuts! It’s a constant whining and humming-whirring noise in that box by the sliding door. Any suggestions? It doesn’t sound like a fan. It sounds as if you were listening to a vacuum running in a room down the hall… And has a rhythm to it, most annoying!
Thx ToyCarCollector for your thoughtful comment. You spawned a video idea on the generator VS lithium Volta. Not everyone needs Volta. Not everyone lives in their RV. But, having Volta ups the freedom element but not having to worry about generator upkeep and noise. Learn - Share - You Decide the best way to RV... that is how we roll here on GSLL. Thanks for keeping me grounded
I think is is a variable speed fan to cool the invertor. Mine was noisy for several months and now is very quite. Makes the most noise when under a heavy load; makes heat then too. Talking with Volta and WGO dealer they stated it is normal behavior.

Hey Gypsy. Your are in the right line of thinking. Seattle isn’t the great place it used to be. We lived there from 1986 to 2003. Don’t miss it at all except for Asian food. Boise rocks! Vanlife = freedom even if for “short” trips. Don’t need to live in on to get full enjoyment That is all IMO you know. Excited for your 2021 plans!
@@gosmall.livelarge yeah I am half Japanese so having a Uwajimaya near me is very handy. I actually live in Renton ( yes, I can hear you and Kyle laughing now). Its beautiful here but just too overcrowded now and the homeless and tent cities in downtown dont make going downtown inviting. You are such an inspiration and I get closer and closer to making the leap into van life everytime I watch your videos. Im so glad I found your channel. Do you have your travel plans hammered out for 2021 yet? Hoping that will be an upcoming video.
So many great Uwakimaya memories. My last neighborhood in Seattle before moving to Chicagao was Chinatown Love Renton used to wrk there. Downtown still needs a shot in the arm. Ivars in the park on Lake Washington!!
Wow that state capital building was incredible, so beautiful. Hey Scott can anyone purchase the complete Volta system? I was wondering if someone doing a build could install it in their van. Luke is a cool cat, very handsome too. Thanks for all the tips. I was a golfer until I got osteoarthritis in both hands. I couldn’t hold the clubs the way I did before and trying to change my grip so that it didn’t hurt to swing at my age? No way. Happy New Year my friend. Stay safe buddy. Cheers!!!
Harvest Host just sounds awesome and I'm definitely signing up when I go full-time in my new Travato 59GL in March. You going to upgrade to one of the new Macbook Pro M1 laptops? I've got one coming in the mail for video/web/email purposes. Also, when are you getting a drone? Because that seems to be the new thing. I picked up a Mavic Air 2 and it's pretty nice. Got Part 107 certified so I can make money from it should I so choose.
That is awesome on harvest Hosts. I you use the link from my site you get 15% off. If you plan to be in urban areas I highly recommend getting the golf course package. Not upgrading to M1 Mac. I am weaning myself off Macintosh to a larger degree using my iPad Pro 12.9 more and more. Drone... had one with me for 2 years and never used it.
First Happy New Year. Best wishes for a safe and healthy 2021 and lots of fun adventures. You ask for comments and suggestions. So here’s one. Your videos could have a more organized scripts.
Wife and I do enjoy watching your adventures. Question: we are considering getting the Winnebago Boldt which is 1'11" longer than the Travato. Really like the ease of parking you experience, so question is, do you feel that extra length would be a hindrance?
Additional length could be an issue in some situations. Overall probably not that big of a deal unless trying to squeeze into a single parking space. My method is to park far away from the store and take two tandem spots. Boldt could do the same thing with ease.
Thank you Scott as your videos have been very informative. I am negotiating a purchase of a 2020.5 GL with 23K miles on it. Are there any trouble areas or trouble spots that you have had - or noticed - in your van that I should look for or be concerned about? I have heard about water leakage around the roof fans. I plan of getting a per-purchase inspection on the engine and the van itself. Just wondering if you were buying a used GL what would you look for? Thank you for your time.
I would have a mobile RV repair do a thorough inspection before I bought a used rig, in addition to me checking everything out. Dealer would need to inspect chassis too
Hi, my style of van life would be to street/stealth camp 90% of the time in Southern California/Los Angeles. I know you mostly street camp. Out of the whole year of 2020 you were in your van, approximately how many days did you street camp and how many days did you stay in an rv park? Do you think you can do your same lifestyle of street camping in a 24ft Mercedes sprinter van? How realistic is it to street camp 80-90% of the time a month? Thanks!
Thx MCR6 for the great questions. I have put them into my video queue to answer more thoroughly. My general park/camp weekly routine is 2-3 nights Harvest Hosts, 1-2 nights street camp, and 2-3 rv park or campground. Larger size rigs likely to limit street camping spaces. Street camping fatigue is eliminate when I know I have an approved and secure site for the night. Your street camping goal 80-90% of the time seems very ambitious to me. But you will find your rhythm, as did I.
Hi Scott, does your inverter make an annoying constant whirring sound like a mini vacuum cleaner? My 2019 GL is wonderful, except for that! Coming from the upholstered box by the sliding door… Is that the inverter? It is so annoying. Any help appreciated! nice cat
Yes, mine did that as well for a few months. Now runs in near silence. Maybe there was a breakin period? I do notice the noice volume increasing if the inverter is under heavy work load.
OK, thanks! Let’s hope it’s a break in period.. And is there a way to turn off all power in the van, even when I’m plugged into shore power? Sometimes I have to turn everything off in order to get to sleep… And now I have to go outside and unplug it.
@@gosmall.livelarge Thanks for being there! Happy new year! And did you see my question about being able to turn off power completely, from within the van when it is plugged into shore power? I wish there were a cut off switch! Have to run outside…
Someone who is a full time rv’r said that Home Depot has really good WiFi. And ***QUESTION*** what is the app for the speed test on WiFi on devices ? Tia. Happy New Year 2021.... Deb
@gosmall.livelarge oh, iam so Sorry Scott I didn't know he past away.Iam a cat lover and my kitty past on 2022 ,he lived a long good life.Hope you find another Luke clone in the future, God Bless Brother!
One more question how do you think the Nashville bombing will effect your stealth camping? Be seeing lots of stories about police sending the bomb squad to look at a RV parked.
In Nashville for sure, there will an affect for a while. We will see as I return to street camping as one of my “camping” methods later in a couple weeks.

Cheers!!!
You are right about the capitol building, and Luke! Thx for sharing F&T
Scott; do they still make the Idaho Spud candy? for some reason thought they had potato in the ingredients......
LOL... let me google that.
@@gosmall.livelarge Like an Idaho specialty!
Thx Az... always trying to improve
Why not use reusable cups and plates?
Simple convenient, and more importantly I want to save on water and waste usage. Great question!
@@gosmall.livelarge thanks for the reply - perfectly understandable. I hope you choose degradable products. Thanks for all your work you post
Good to use a VPN when on an open network. Hopefully you have one.
Thx Tang.
So wait, was that a shot of Luke driving the van from right to left on the screen??
#vanlife Luke is often in the drivers seat (when I am not). All about Luke!
That power system in your van was that an after market upgrade or was that an upgrade option from the factory?
Volta is installed at Winnebago factory. Volta is installed in other RV manufacturer too
Thank you Scott as your videos have been very informative.
Dealer would need to inspect chassis too
I am still planing on going to the Super Show in 12 days but still not 100%. Any help?
I’m attending. Not sure on meetups not camping options at this point. Would be great to meet you there if possible
@@gosmall.livelarge yep that would be great. I am only going Thursday and Friday.
I just noticed that your bike racks are down while driving…wonder why or was it by accident??
Rack down without bike as one screw bolt rusted and rack wont fold closed
I really want a 59gl in a couple years what are your thoughts on Winnebago bringing the front puzzle bed back?
customer response through feedback and sales volume will likely dictate that return.. I do hope they rethink some of the “iimprovments” they made.
Wondering about hopping on Library WiFi - are you using a Wifi amplifier? Any VPN for security?
No VPN for security. I have a Winegard WiFi extender mounted on the roof, which helps pull in a weak single. Thx for asking
Someone who is a full time rv’r said that Home Depot has really good WiFi. And ***QUESTION*** what is the app for the speed test on WiFi on devices ? Tia. Happy New Year 2021.... Deb
Will look into Home Depot. Would need to connect from outside and away from the store, so that is a big lift.
app = SpeedTest
Scott I know it's been less than a year but how is the wrap holding up? Any peeling
Zero. One tiny bubble. Great idea for an update video !
What did the Volta system cost compared to a generator? Could you have just purchased a Solar Generator like an eco flow Delta 1300?
Not familiar with that system you mention. Can the rooftop A/C operation from that system?
Did you have to train Luke to live in the van? litter training ,etc.
tony, he took to vanlife really well from the start. he was a curious and awesome Vanlife Luke! miss him terribly
@gosmall.livelarge oh, iam so Sorry Scott I didn't know he past away.Iam a cat lover and my kitty past on 2022 ,he lived a long good life.Hope you find another Luke clone in the future, God Bless Brother!
Luke!
#vanlife Luke 🐈 🐾
Have you ever put your van on a scale. I'm curious how much it weighs.
I did early in my Vanlife. Fully loaded with gasoline and water plus me and stuff is 8500 pounds
Thanks for the info.
Was Luke always a van cat?
Nope. He was an indoor outdoor cat. Took to #vanlife very easily !
!
Michael, the man of few words!
Good morning Scott and Luke😊
Hi Mickey !!
