The Problems with WCW Gimmick Matches: They did not get everyone on the same page about the rules (or somebody changed the rules, brother). They didn't verify if the matches would function properly within the laws of physics. They didn't verify if the matches would hurt the wrestlers thanks to the laws of physics They didn't verify if the wrestlers/celebrities belonged in this kind of match They didn't verify if the audience could see/follow the match. Gimmicks were booked all the time, without warning or reason, to the point they were diluted The matches were overbooked in ways that made the gimmicks pointless
Did they have a house show loop? I don't understand why they didnt test some of these in front of a live crowd: A, to see their reaction. and B, to make sure the gimmick even worked (like you said, the laws of physics doesnt care how good your imagination is).
He was SO underutilised EVERYWHERE he worked. At least his impact on the industry as a whole will be remembered a lot longer than his runs as an active wrestler. That's Jackson! But luckily JCVD only called Jackson brother until after j Jackson almost died. Everytime that's been done early, the brother don't make it! Well, off to a bar in Thailand I go!
Daffney could apparently. She told the story of trying to get into WCW and them being shocked that she'd followed and understood most of the storylines that even they'd lost track of and were confused by.
Shamed that anyone who joined WCW on that time would be brand as a joke in wrestling scene. If Jim joined WCW instead of Russo, Anyone would make fun of him to this day.
You may have watched The Doomsday Cage Match more than anyone in the history of earth. That match is almost 30 minutes, and feels like 50. I watched it once, and I dont remember seeing a SINGLE move. So I applaud your commitment to your job sir!
It's easy to forget just how confused and confusing WCW could get. I'd seen the match, and still entirely forgot that a busted-open Flair won a First Blood match by 3-count pinfall with a submission hold.
In 2024 wwe could do a cinema style match with someone using their iPhone to record the action. The end result would still be way better than anything wcw ever did
(Starts singing) "He's a man called Meng!" I know what you're thinking, that's Sting's theme song. But if you want to tell me, don't. Go tell that to Meng.
First to survive a 500 mile Bristol Race against the dirtiest and slowest drivers in NASCAR history wins the match and is both WCW Champion and Winston Cup champion. Only on Thunder with Fox Sports Production. "4/5 stars, Not enough Tokyo," Dave Meltzer, probably.
In terms of Gimmick Matches in WCW, I always remember the Thunderdome Cage Match between Funk/Muta and Sting/Flair. All the hype about the electrified top of the cage, then part of the cage gets set on fire BEFORE the match starts and Muta has to mist the fire just to put it out. I know they tried to play off the electrified cage gimmick later in the match, but it makes me think TNA was watching this match when they thought of THEIR Electrified Cage Match in 2007
My goodness catch -as-catch-match is my favorite blunder moment with Dean legitimately forgetting about the rules, can’t stop laughing at that moment lol
Don't forget that several minutes of the Doomsday Cage Match involved Hulk Hogan beating up Kevin Sullivan on the outside of the supposedly inescapable cage.
Even taking the WCW “old guard” out, Russ-bro was handed Bret, Goldberg, Awesome, Benoit, Malenko, Eddie, Saturn, Booker, Steiner, Konnan, Rey, Lance Storm, Jarrett…and more, and couldn’t make a coherent program out of it.
In your entry on the chamber of horrors match. The most Ludacris part of the matches you had to win by strapping your opponent in an electric chair. Who in their right mind would sit still while someone is strapping them in an electric wheelchair? At least in ladder matches you get the illusion that someone is legitimately incapacitated so their opponent can get up the ladder. In the chamber of horrors match if memory serves me correctly Abdullah the butcher looked like he was conscious while getting strapped in
I know the outcome of the doomsday cage match was yet another example of Hogan politics. It not only made the corny and goofy dungeon of doom look worse than they already did but it basically took way the credibility of Ric Flair and Arn Anderson. In the second half of the 80s Flair Anderson and the 2 other Horsemen ran roughshod over Jim Crockett promotions. Then Flair Anderson and I think 7 partners couldn't take the past their primes Hogan and Savage
WWE actually released a DVD set of the War Games matches in 2013 and they included War Games 2000. So I would assume that WG2000 is officially canon in the War Games timeline

Blunder point number 5.... hogan was being distracted from seeing that flair was getting the tire iron.... it would be easier to avoid if it was known he had it, or even easier, to prevent flair from recieving it from the hole if he seen him getting it....

I can't blame Malenko for forgetting the rules of the match, given it's WCW and nobody could keep track of what was going on there.
This is very reminiscent of the bill watts era of wcw. When he banned top rope moves, wrestlers and referees would forget the rules at times.
I couldn't either, but I doubt he did forget the rules. He likely was never even told them.
