- PO-133 Samples a Piano!
Today I was at my friend Oliver's house and I decided to sample his piano with my PO-133 Street Fighter! I absolutely love being able to bring the PO-33/133 with me and sample my surroundings, including the sounds of acoustic instruments! All you need is a little bit of theory knowledge to sample and playback whatever notes you want. As always, the sampling/writing sessions ends with a signature Free Beat bad keyboard solo! Enjoy the video :)

Now I see why everyone loves the PO33 / PO133! Brilliant!
It's amazing! Thanks for watching :)
I'm so glad you keep doing videos using the classic and simple gear you started out with such as the POs. That really helps with my GAS, as creativity with what I already have is what I need to stay grounded -- not buying new gear that I THINK will help make me a better musician/song maker. Learning new and creative ways to use the gear you own is key to making and finishing tunes. Thanks again for not abandoning the basics!
Limitations really do push us to be creative.
Oh yeah I'll always come back to the PO's! There's a lifetime of content you could create just from a single PO, let alone when they are combined haha. Thanks so much for watching :)
Excellent video FB! I'm 66 years old and you are teaching this old dog new tricks indeed! So glad you chose this venue to share your wizardry! I love you, man!
Glad you're enjoying the content! I appreciate you being along for the journey :)
I'm 63 and my son just got me this for Christmas. Cant wait to get playing and this video was a great inspiration, many thanks.
I love using my PO-33 as an audio sketch pad. I’ll load a few sounds and screw around to see what I come up with. Then I pull out my monster (MPC Live2) and make the composition. This thing is SO fun.
Yeah, it's perfect for that!
That chord trick is really smart, really goes to show that if you have the right knowledge you can get so so much out of your gear
This will be my 2nd PO (arriving today or tomorrow). This video got me super hyped. Thanks FB
This is f...ing amazing!!!
Definitely have to play more with the 33!
Thanks for watching!
An easy way to sample any instrument that requires two hands to play is to prerecord the instrument with microphone into a hand-held recording device (or into a computer or smartphone), then send the prerecording over cable connection into the PO-33/PO-133 where it is captured as sample.
Oh yeah absolutely, it's just not that easy when I only have the PO-33 on me hahaha.
I put cloth pins onto the keys I need held. Doesn't always work first try but with a couple attempts it'll get done
I love the idea of sampling major and minor chords so you have more to choose from. Great job!
Glad you liked that little tip, one of my favorites :) Thanks for watching!
Yooooooo. This is super cool. Amazing sounds fam.
Thanks!
Plot twist: He just broke in a random house with a piano inside.
Jokes aside I love your videos man
Haha I keep tabs on all my neighbors pianos!
Subscribed!
That's a great session. Setting down some good beats. I think you have the bones of something there.
Thanks! I'll see if I can develop it into something else haha.
Yes really enjoyed this. Cool.
Thanks so much!
Cool video, and Happy International Piano Day!
Thanks for watching, Happy International Piano Day to you too!
Excellent video as ever!!! Great to see you with the PO again
Thanks so much, I'll never abandon the PO's :)
This is so cool! Now I want a pocket operator lol they look so cute and travel friendly. I think I literally might just buy one because they're so cheap and so I can use it on an airplane when I travel.
Be sure to grab a case! Have fun :)
Very nice idea and cool video!
Thanks so much!
Piano is my favorite instrument to sample into the po-33! On some tracks I use it to play back long piano samples (like 20-30 seconds) just to get the lofi quality
Yeah that's awesome, I absolutely love how the piano sounds after running through the PO-33. Thanks for watching!
Great!! Nobody does lead playing on their PO’s. Great jam! Thanks!
Thanks so much!
@@FreeBeat I do wish you would go a little slower for us kids who don’t catch on as quick. I wanted so much to do what you did but I couldn’t make out the piano chords you played.
Loved todays video, the vibe of being outside the studio playing with portable gear really puts the PO133 in a relatable context and somehow I just loved this video :D thanks for this !
I figured you'd like this one haha, you were almost the Patron shoutout for this instead of the internal speaker video :D
amazing video!!!
Thanks so much!
90’s R&B vibe. Awesome.
Have you done a full on jam with all your POs?
Thanks! I haven't done a jam with all of them at once, but I am working on an entire Pocket Operator only album!
I really liked this one, using the Sub would have really filled that spectrum but sampling is probably the single most important thing to know as an electronic musician! Nice job! Peace, your probably sick of my fascination of the Sub, so I apologize. Lol
I actually almost brought the sub, but I decided I wanted everything to come from the 33. (But then I cheated and used the 32 too lol)
Using samples like this makes it sound like the soundtrack to an Amiga game
That tune was just begging for some vocals!
F.Ace! I love what you created from an old Joanna there. Time for me to get off my backside and do something (actually I’m in bed because I was out at my second live concert gig in two years last night helping with the sound). Cheers. Lee ( the other reason to get up is that my wife informs me a parcel has arrived which will be a volca keys)
Oooh yes go get that Volca Keys!!!
This is very amazing, is the way of sampling exactly the same with the PO-33 KO ???
I am trying to emulate how you use the banks to sample. When you sample the tonic, did you use bank 1-4 for the drums? I thought 1 and 2 was already assinged for the piano chords, and 4 for your thumb click
You could play an open string on the uke to sample it
Yes, I've sampled open Uke and U-Bass quite a bit on a PO-33. Works great.
I thought about that, but I was really itching to sample some chords haha.
"You can always leave a dislike " *video has 0 dislikes*
Hahaha give it a little more time I'm sure a few of them will show up 😂 thanks for watching!
banger
Thanks so much!
5:06 - Did you have to clean up / trim the samples, or did it just work?
I actually only had to trim one, and only just barely!
I’m new to a PO. Can you plug in headphones to this like a Walkman so nobody else can hear you making a beat or sampling?
Thanks for watching!
use a clothes peg on the sample button.. then tap 1-16.. (dont need to hold pad 1-16 just tap)
Good tip!
Sample 1:37 of your video for a nice deep kick (What's that sound BTW ?)
It sounds like the camera getting bumped a little hahaha.
Free Beat, any objections to me sampling this? I would give full credit for YT video I would create with it. Thanks.
In the words of the senate: Dew it.
Seriously, go for it haha, I'm excited to see what you come up with!
@@FreeBeat Thanks. I post a link here once it is done.
@@FreeBeat Hey FB. Here it is. ruclips.net/video/9TnyeFZwunU/видео.html
Where cab i buy it ?❤
The PO-133 is out of stock, but the PO-33 (which is the exact same except for the Street Fighter overlay) can be purchased here: amzn.to/43PvaxZ
Piano and guitar is one of the touchy sounds to sample. The brilliance and definition of the pressed or plucked notes get lost once you start messing with the notes on the P.O.
If you sample the sounds and chords in the drum slots, it doesn't lose alot of its "originality" when you switch between octaves or pitches in the scale.
I find pianos and guitars sound kinda toyish when you play with the pitch and scale on the melody section.
Good video. It sounds good, very informative and helpful!
Yeah, the full definition of the strings is completely messed up by the 33, but I sort of love it haha. Thanks for watching!
that was fun more of these
I'll definitely do more in the future :)
Duuuuuuuude!
That was hella inspiring!!!
Brilliant sampling method!
I’ve been wracking my brain trying to find a way to imbue a given sample collection with some flexibility. The “record a major chord, a minor of same key, then the tonic note and relative minor note” is really simple, yet I suspect really powerful.
Obvious in hindshight, I wish I thought of it! Bravo, sir!
Glad you enjoyed the video, happy sampling!
