I’m disappointed you did not spray WD40 on the test bench to make it go faster.
@it'sFckinRaw ha I did a while ago! Still got to give my gpus some techyesloving. Scared will break them!
Sometimes... I swear you can read my mind... I've been meaning to research this topic for a week or two now. Thank you for the content! Keep it up!
OMFG i was trying to figure out the MSI Afterburner on screen display at a mates place the other day. Couldn't get it to work, now i know the unintuitive way you have to do it now. Thanks Brian.
i use the same system, i have a bc-1 bench table for my ryzen test bench and a lian li pitstop open test bench for my intel systems. i can send you my own screen display profile if you want a more in depth osd
Tks so much for this video. I appreciate these kind of videos you put out!!
Really nice! Thank you for that Video, it helped a lot.
Thank you for doing this video. I literally was thinking about this an hour before your video popped up on my recommended feed.
used afterburner before but had no clue what I was doing, this was an excellent tutorial thankyou
God how much I wanted a video like this. Keep up the good work and content.
Thank you so much!
I've been looking for this for a while!
FOUND YOU
@@veemyu hi
Perfect for tuning RAM timings with Ryzen, Thank you.
You benchmark with some Tech YES Loving!
Thank you, very detailed
Okay... this was very helpful. I've been trying to bench and I've been using Afterburner with Riva Tuner and I've had trouble testing the .1% and 1% lows.
Awesome walk through man, really breaks down the process and simplifies it. How're you looking the new Dominator's, I love my 2400 c10 set I use in my x99 setup but I am itching to move to the newer set (the c10 is what is keeping me from moving though)
It's 4:30 am when i'm watching this and Brain had the same ringtone , i thought a ghost or some shit was calling me , scared the living daylights out of me
hello! does anyone know how to make framerate numbers to be in the same row like shown in the video? when i name 0.1%, 1% etc with the same group name it displays as 1 row but i want to see the text like 'low' or 'avg' in this row
Thanks for making this video ..
How to benchmark the YES way (;
I was waiting for this
I've set this up multiple times on multiple different PCs, following this video as a guide, but for some reason this time around, I can't get the timer to display with all of the 1% and . 1% lows... Anyone know what I might be missing?
having the separate boot drives for AMD and Nvidia cards is genius! keep up the good work 🙂
I did the same (I hit framerate) but when I start benchmarking to timer appears on the OSD. Can you help with this?
Damn, nice. Got to go play with Afterburner!! Thanks so much.
This actually helped me since I'm doing my thesis about benchmarking (yes, really!). Gonna come back to this video to recheck stuff every now and then :D Thanks a bunch Bryan, u da man!
ps. been so neurotic for years about cpu/gpu/ram/vram usages that I have HWMonitor, Task Manager and Afterburned HW Monitor always open on my 2nd screen, I just like to check em every now and then while gaming to get that "peace of mind" :D
Hope that thesis was great
@@BMS_ never happened, life threw curveballs after another xd
@@Jomenaa oh, sorry for reminding you of this thing, my intentions where the other away around. shit happens, future will be brighter
@@BMS_ yeah no problem mate, just gotta push thru and find something interesting to do :)
Amazing tutorial my man 👍👍
Thanks a LOT,Brian !!!
Is there a place, where you put your benchmark results, while selling ?
Or You adding it upon request ?
Brian huge respect for you for making this video.
I mean it.
How do I record gameplay benchmark with 60hz monitor without seeing any tearing ( I don't mind seeing tearing while I'm recording but I just don't want them to appear in the recording) in the recording is there any setting to do that?
I don't have the benchmark row even if I did all the settings like in your video, did they update it and removed the visual part of it?
Nice vid. Wish I've watched this before trying to set up the on-screen overlay. I put all the stuff (literally everything) and let's just say it's not the best first experience. The whole left part of my screen was covered up in text. lol
One thing I'm curious is whether what is the difference between using window, borderless window, and full screen, to frame rates and whatnot. I've always used full screen since it's always the default one. But I've seen some friends insists on using borderless window is better. Thx
thank for sharing bro
@Tech YES City
, Thanks for this video but you see the line you have that has the time and everything else (Abe, Min etc), When I run my benchmark this line appears for about 3-5 sec then disappear and goes to the top and all the names disappear as well (ave, min, 0.1%low, 1%low). I am wondering if you know why. I am running the latest version as of today 23/4/2019
Thanks a lot, that was really useful. Does anyone know why when i start benchmarking, the data about framerate under the diagram graph does not appear ? The data that shows 1% low, average, etc
Is there any difference in results upon using Radeon settings or MSI Afterburner to overclock an AMD card?? Or just the way you put the numbers in to OC it?
HWinfo seems to turn off my SSD, I do have 4 HDD's though (+1 SSD). Temps on that test bench will be nothing like the components being inside a case.
i need to analyse the desktop(web) games ..i tried the app which your showing its not working
Thanks for sharing. Quick question, if you only benchmark for 30seconds isn't this a bit short? Or was this only for this video and you do it for longer?
more.. bcause different scenes usually means more load.. etc etc.. try in-game benchmarking like in Rise of the tomb raider.. u'll get the idea from there..
epic tut Bryan
Great video, didn't realize Afterburner came with Riva Tuner. Going to benchmark tonight for some comparison numbers myself
Great tips on how to benchmark!
This is really helpfull. Thanks and greetings from Germany.
Thank you for the tutorial. I have actually never ventured into benchmark for gaming and as a tech channel I'm way late into this but since my viewers want gaming content, it's time to take the plunge. And I love that you ended with a disclaimer to cross check numbers with yours, well done. You earned a new sub, and you will be hearing from me in the near future.
I recently got a Medion with an i3 4170. Should i upgrade to an i5 for 1080p gaming?
So, those Orange things, i mean the usages of components, if i want only that, to see how my PC performs in games, its enough to Download the MSI afterburner for that? or i need the second prog. too
Task Manager shows disc usage too Brian,
when I built my Ryzen PC I originally carried over my W7 7200rpm 3.5 drive for W10, It kept getting stuttering & using Task Manager saw the Disc Usage was hitting 100%, I have since put W10 on a 120gb SSD & no more 100% usage or stuttering, I never had that with W7 & FX6300
Can you do an updated overclock guide video? I noticed your last one is from 2017, or is it still applicable
Thanks. Like your videos.
Do you clean drivers for each card? Even if they are from the same company? (Nvidia or AMD)
last time u tried the riva tuner thing i couldn't shut it down like i kept pressing the x button and it just didn't respond and couldn't force shut it down from the task manager cause it kept coming back up i thought i got a virus i got scared but after a while i got a trick to press the x button and force shut it down at the same time and i got it to shut down and uninstalled it and never will download that shit again
best videos to watch
Thanks
5:54 What? So do I only enable the first framerate or 2nd?
I set it all up exactly like in this vid, frametime etc, but theres no "timer" in OSD Frametime when i run heaven.
same, the timer and the rest of the info also doesn't shows up on mine. so i need to still enable avgfps and such separately.
And how about people who benchmark and record at the same time? Does it affect results? Or do they use capture cards?
Two questions:
1. How do you get CPU temps?
2. How do u get the GPU temps and usage to show? I’m using the integrated R5 2400g and it’s showing as 0% and 0c
How did I not know about this! I've been using Fraps which records FPS at set intervals, then I have to manually extract average and low values from that using Excel. This is a much faster solution. You do get a bit of overhead with MSI Afterburner (which is relevant on potato PC's) but it does also allow monitoring of usage and temperatures. Thanks for the info.
Someone help me pls, I don't get how the MIN FPS can be higher number then any other FPS measurements. As far as I know 0.1% low is also an average of many low FPS instances during the test, so the lowest ever FPS point for the test must be the MIN FPS bc MIN is MIN and there can't be lower then MIN unless MIN FPS is also some sort of average of 20 or 40% lows??? If that is the case how can I see the real lowest ever FPS drop for that test.
My go-to benching combo.
You do have to be careful with some games and AB+RT sometimes though. I don't know if it's been fixed, but IIRC AMD cards, maybe Nvidia cards too, had FPS impacting issues with Vulkan in Doom and/or Wolfenstein.
Def would like to see an overclock guide
Brian, I must ask. Why 32 seconds in particular? Is this just your control number for benchmarking ? Or is this a given cycle for something? :)
my benchmark record bottons dont seem to be working.
Tech Yes
OCAT and CAP FRAME X are more precise than afterburner and shows better graphs of 0.1. But also one of your best videos, many thanks.
Exactly! No professional tech youtuber should use afterburner for benchmarking.
Oh ok I wasn't aware capframex I will have to check that out, how is it more accurate than AB + RT?
@@techyescity Afterburner is merely approximating the values (time fixed sampling steps) and therefore no exact benchmark (especially 1% and .1% and min.). OCAT on the other hand will give you exact results, as it records earlier in the render pipeline and gives you the render time of each computed frame. Also, you can set a fixed recording interval for better reproducibility.
CapFrameX will just give you a nice (visual) analysis of an OCAT benchmark. You can also compare different runs pretty easily.
@@techyescity it was right was @theopenfield says. CapframeX is an interpteter for OCAT from an german engineer. CapframeX can show perfectly graphs from multiple benchmarks and analyse this correctly with 0.1 and percentages. Download it from github or computerbase.de. Sorry for my bad english😁 greetz from germany, you are the coolest tech youtuber!
Mid benchmark hustling tech yes special.
MSI and RivaTuner is the BEST for the TEST-ing.
I always had problems with getting the 1% and 0.1% lows to show up on the on screen statistics with MSI and RivaTuner. but now i know. Thanks for the details.
Another thing I wanted to know is about the Audio part of your testing, specifically REW and other audio software. The error i get in REW says i have no input devices when i do.
With REW you sometimes need a fresh install of windows, other overlays and programs can cause it to bug out.
Thanks for the tip.
Also i found on MSI's Afterburner web page they have a OC Scanner built in to 3 of MSI's skins. Select one of the Cyborg Afterburner skins and it'll have that extra OC sanner option.
So how do you get the 1% and 0.1% to show up? I've been looking for a solution well
B shows how to get the 1% lows to show up in the on screen statistics in this video.
According to MSI, Afterburner can also overclock your card to optimum settings (RTX cards only). Have you used this function?
i've seen benchmarkers in youtube use only 1-column and also very colorful differentiate each information i thought they use msi afterburner..
Brian PLEASE HELP ME ! Im desperate ! I have a 1080Ti/7700k/16GB PC that has been perfect since i got the GPU until recently , I used to get great frame rates in all games but in the last month its been really bad ! SOTTR at 1440p used to get 60 fps with maxed settings and never dropping but now (well not every boot but most) its dropping into the 40s . Its really easy to check if its not right , i just fire up the SOTTR benchmark and straight away its either 60 fps with 80% GPU or 45fps with 99% GPU ! I've actually reinstalled Win 10 4 times in the last week and followed your optimisation guides to the tee (and even broke Win 10 disabling things i shouldn't ) but its still borked ! I made restore points when it was running right the other day and tried rolling back to that but it doesn't help !
What could it be ? Im a Brisbane man and just dont know what else to do !
Again, PLEASE HELP ME ! Ill love you even more than i already do if you find it in your power to help fix my PC :)
Sorry to post here but i just dont know what else to do or who to go to ! I can pay you for your time !
Great, just please include live tests with all osd stats when comparing. Split screen is good option. Just please live, neck to neck..you can make it better visible by putting other text color for avg,min,max,1/0.1%lows..cheers
32s and then quit the benchmark? The frame drops come way later in the benchmark.
is this still how you benchmark today Bryan, im getting micro stuttering in dayz with a R7 3700X, RTX 3070 and 32gb 3600MHz Ram
Lol apex was other way round for me, i updated msi rivatuner and msi afterburner and apex refused to work some times i would just start up msi after apex was already running in game, i only use it just ffor keeping an eye on gpu usage cpu usage etc if i benchmark its with fraps
@Tech YES City
This why you set your screen resolution back to 1080p, while recording the screen.
2560x1440 is not working that well for tutorials, cause the majority of the people sit behind 1080p monitors.
This tutorial looks like it's from 1995 with the unsharp/blurry text and graphics.
Msi afterburner refuses to show fps avg !! Everything shows but the avg.. super annoying
Are Xeon's really this good? Benchmarking my X3470 only reaches 34% max in any benchmark or game but my GTX 1060 6GB goes up to over 90%. Odd that a 7 year old CPU is not bottlenecking that new of a card.
My x3430 @3.6ghz often averages at 70% especially if going over 60FPS in games. I can see yours reaching only 34% if you just play LoL :P I'm sure that it bottlenecks the GPU if you're pushing for high FPS (120+), but if you are fine with 60FPS max settings it won't really bottleneck the 1060... Also, if you are benchin/stressing the CPU it must go to 100%.
Great video, thanks for sharing this. I realise my comment is a bit late, since this video was created 4 yrs ago, lol, but it's interesting and still relevant. I was just wondering what your thoughts are regarding games with built-in benchmarks. There are many games that have a built-in benchmark tool. For example, Metro Exodus, Far Cry 5 and 6, Crysis, etc. I would have thought using a built-in benchmark tool would help to create a more accurate apples-to-apples comparison, since separate runs are guaranteed to be identical. It's also a lot easier. The downside is that not all games have these, and it's possible that your audience might want to see benchmarks of games that don't have them. Thoughts?
For me I only need a 1 minute stint in game, then I get back to MSI FPS rate and Frame Time, plus maybe CPU clocks to watch out for possible throttling. That's it. And mark this, you can achieve better results not knowing squat about tweaking but knowing how to enable max FPS limiters than a person who knows a lot on 3D settings but doesn't know how to limit max FPS.
how come you have CPU temperature while i dont have one..
PS: quick overclocking pls :D
In the settings from afterburner, go to the third tab and scroll down, click on the gray tick sign next to cpu temp, also put a tick on the box that says show in osd, done :)
@@LeonVuksic i literally dont have that.. i know how to use it..
im using aida64 plugin before.. i dont have one now too.. kek..
THE FRAMERATE OPTION ISNT POPING UP, PLEASE HELP!
AMD has benchmarking tool via overlay that i use
22:55 mark of a hardcore gamer
Don't forget the framerenderplots! It is possible (proven by Gamers Nexus) to get around 60 FPS for the 0.1% minimum and still get some frames with a 100 ms render time.
Almost fell asleep with this one.. 😁
Don't use Afterburner for benchmarking, folks (and especially professional tech youtubers). It's merely approximating the values (time fixed sampling steps) and therefore no exact benchmark (especially 1% and .1%). Use OCAT instead, this will give you exact results, as it records earlier in the render pipeline and gives you the render time of each computed frame.
Should be common knowledge nowadays. CapFrameX will give you a nice (visual) analysis of an OCAT benchmark.
Other than that, great video, especially the overlay (HWInfo integration is also recommend to get voltage readings for CPU etc) and overclocking part! :)
TheOpenfield I agree. Another thing AB lacks is a time cutoff. For comparative benchmarks, having the capture record for X amount of seconds is the only way to get truly accurate comparisons.
For the time being OCAT appears to be the best tool for capturing FT data, though it does this at the present stage of the render pipeline, which is after the app (game), but before the OS, Driver, and GPU. Because of this, you end up seeing data that might not be representative of what is seen on screen. Some would argue FCAT is a better tool in that respect, but it’s much more time consuming and more expensive to setup.
@@Face2FaceHardware yes, FCAT is indeed the best way, but as you said, way more involving. The fixed recording time can also be setup in afterburner, and should definitely be the same for comparison.
TheOpenfield After getting through more of the video I saw what Brian was doing, but I rather not do it that way. Any idea where the fixed recording time option is? I asked the creator of AB about it a couple of months ago and he said he was not going to add it. Has that changed?
@@Face2FaceHardware Oh, seems you were right all along. There is no such option in AB (could've sworn..), only for video recording. Although you can easily program timed macros to do so. Nevertheless that shows, AB is even more unsuitable for meaningfull benchmarking.
Nicely Done Bryan i know how to Benchmark but theres also something that one never do and thank buddy really appretiated Big Hugs
It looks like Afterburner plugin "PerfCounter.dll" is now working properly again :)
Is it time for a optimizing guide yet ?
Great video! Why 32 seconds?
Lovely tutorial. Guys naming the folder bencharmksz is the most important part, please make sure you don't misspell that otherwise the benchmarks are eaten by the recycle bin
How to RECORD the game for Bench WITHOUT harming it? (Record consume GPU and CPU)

should i buy parts for a new PC around $500 and build it or should i buy a dell optiplex and with a new psu and graphics card for $500? please reply i NEED to know
One thing more u didnot mention power draw
Watch mr.techdeals osd guide to afterburner.
Nice first
Looks like this video was displayed using a 20Series card, that artifacting in the beginning exposed you.
working as intended
what RTX 2070 are you using sir?
I think it's the KFA2/GALAX RTX 2070.
Bryan, loves them GALAX cards for performance in his recent vids :)
why 32 seconds and not 30?? and is 32 long enough?
Doesn't really matter the length of time as long as they were all tested with the same methodology. I'd like to have seen it a couple of minutes at least but I am not Brian and am not into telling people how to do things i don't do daily.
Rivatuner won't run
Shouldnt your nVidia SSD be...... any colour but red? XD
