This is a how to video on installing a hinge mounted tire carrier on the Jeep JL. Install is pretty straight forward. Trick is, don't get frustrated, take your time, a set of extra hands helps and don't torque things down until all the bolts are in!

I did the motobuilt one so much better then factory. Man I wish I didn't spray paint it but will fix it in the future. It was weatherstripping… my thought was it would reduce scratches…. But it did not apply well. I cut the idea from the video
Does the company send the shims. Seems like they should. The reason I asked is because you said at one point that we could use washers. Seems like they should have sent shims or do they come from mopar?
They redesigned the carrier since this video.. it don’t need shims no more

At 5:05, what’s the white product on the backside of the carrier? Tape?
It was weather striping... I had intended to have it between the two to avoid scratching the paint... it was having a hard time sticking to the raptor lining...
Ended up not using it
I think the updated kit comes with spacers to put at the indented part of the tailgate. Hoping to install mine this weekend after raptor lining last weekend. Need to figure out my wiring first though. The raptor liner made the tolerance in the camera mount a little close so need to shave off a little bit. Great video here too. You saved my butt already a few times lol.

Iv been eyeballing them km3 when these go out.. so far.. the tire been good to me...
Biggest issue was balancing the darn thing... and as I have learned.. balancing beads and these tires ain’t mixing as well as I hoped... seems to be eating up the inside of the tire... I think the soft composition of the tire plays into it.. ima need to pull em out after moab
Reasons why in ways I’m not looking forward to my PSC rear bumper and tire carrier, but knowing the carrier will secure the tire better is definitely a sense of relief. Bumper installs in general are a two person job even if you may only need the person for 10-15 mins.
Awesome install video, just wanting to go with the bumper tire carrier combo for my Jeep, but I did consider doing one of these setups. Did you think about the Mopar tailgate reinforcement? How large of a tire can the carrier handle(weight)?
This carrier should function as a reinforcement plate as well.. it’s rated to hold up to a 40 inch tire... it’s been holding up great... iv been vertical enough to jam up tht spare tire into the ground and zero issues... same goes with the raptor lining...
I didn’t realize psc made bumpers????
I wanted to avoid a bumper mounted carrier just because how far they stick out of the back of the jeep.... we had one on mistys.... it broke when she hit it climbing something
JL LIFE OFFROAD I was kinda wanting a tire cage, which I thought there would be more out on the market by now for the JL’s but only Genright has that carrier system but I’ll stick with PSC even though it’s more weight on the Jeep.
What are your thoughts about putting too much weight on the Jeep with steel versus aluminum parts? Are you going to get aluminum fender flares(metalcloak, or PSC......well when they come out with them)?

update I didn't need a press for the bushing pieces. And they came with brackets to put where the old hinges were so you shouldn't need shims. Mine lines up thankfully first try. We just put it on today 6/23/20 Im not sure about the 3rd brake light. I really hate there is no instructions.
LOL, I agree. Instructions would be nice. But im super glad to hear it didn't need shims! its a hassle taking the entire thing off and doing it again!
Any issue hitting tail light when opening mine also shuts great
No issues... I have the hinges tight to prevent it from swinging fast

No.. I contacted cavfab and asked them to include in future kits thou.. these shims were part of the rusty kit

A vice would make easy work of those bushing actually 🙌

They contacted me to inform me they redesigned the carrier and you don’t need shims... they assured me.. NO SHIMS NEEDED. And it comes bare steel

I would not recommend rattle cans to paint this part... raptor lining is cheap, durable and simple
I think they charge $100 to powdercoat it.
How's the carrier holding up? I am about to order one now that I see that have added a bracket for the third brake light.

What's the distance from the bottom of tire to ground ? Curiosity gets the best of me when deciding whether or not to add a JL to my Jeep family. Finally changing from all 2 doors to some 4 door car's ( off road toys ) most trails in my local area has 36" to 43" drop offs. Just looking to see what clearances are available if or when I add another family Jeep.

Yes.... I have a white light sitting behind the LP... but ... technically.. it’s not illuminating the plate... Iv discovered being cordial and polite with law enforcement... gives u a lot of leeway lol.
On a different note... I heard they have redesigned their carrier slightly... I think adding a 3rd brake light and lp lamp are included now? I’d ask them before buying thou... I’d feel bad if it was not accurate lol

😂 definitely would be more difficult... but not impossible... can always use the long bolt and some washers trick if u don’t have a press... this one goes for $100 at harbor freight.. I bought it from a friend some time ago for $50.

Both carriers are great... iv also heard that cavfab has redesigned their carrier and has added extra strength and incorporated the brake light and license plate lamp. Thou I haven’t seen it...
Now the only advantage for rusty over the cavfab... it comes pre coated... one less thing to stress over... however I absolutely HATE the license plate relocation bracket on the Rusty’s... such a pain in the butt!
Ultimately both carriers have been holding up well... and if coating the bare steel (cavfab) ain’t an issue... pick tht one!
And cost wise... Rusty’s was $700 + 100 for license plate bracket and additional for shipping...
Cavfab was $650 and free shipping... brackets included so don’t let the price of powder coating discourage you...
