This is my number one favorite reason to emulate: smooth framerates. I love that we live in an age where we can have both hardware-accurate visuals and audio without slowdown/hitches. It's only getting better!
WickerWaka is a legend. His Irem MiSTer cores have had some of my favorite releases on the platform over the last year. Love chatting him up on the Discord.
That reminds me of the unofficial NeoGeo turbo core...that had to be a couple years ago. I wish they would just incorporate that feature into the main core.
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah the ps1 turbo options has made those arcade ports superior to most of the originals. The salamander collection is a great example
This is one of those things that purists who want a nostalgic experience might not like, yet people who just want to play the game will love. Good to have both options! Ironically, the slowdown in these games gives you a little bit more time to react and probably makes you do better.
@@VideoGameEsoterica i'm totally fine with enhancements like turbo and extra sprites turbo mode made arcade double dragon more playable, though it's still a crap game underneath all that slowdown
As a kid I always thought SHMUP slowdown was intentional to give you a chance, especially at boss levels. I'm sure companies like CAVE factored in the slowdown when designing games, else some of the boss levels would be impossible. For me, turbo mode works well for beat 'em ups like Double Dragon, but not so much for SHMUPs.
It's a different case, in CAVE shumps most slowdowns are intentional and pre-programmed. They're not related to hardware. Overclocking the CPU wouldn't change anything.
Fairly obviously these games were originally engineered around frame rate considerations. These games look funny and torturously difficult when “turbocharged”!
Why did they need a new core for this? Couldn't they just add the overcklocking option in the existing core? MAME had overcklocking since forever and it doesn't affect the accuracy/functionality of any driver if you just don't use it. It's not like there's a different MAME fork for this.
It will be combined eventually. But in early stages it’s usually air gapped to a new core as to test before release / as to not affect functioning existing cores
Im a newb when it comes to MiSTER. So how does that work? Is it like Retroarch were you just install cores and roms? Im totally interested in this now since im seeing certain arcade games are getting improvements. I was playing In the Hunt on PS4 with my girlfriend and wow half of the game was in slow motion 😂
Do you find Gunforce II & In the Hunt harder or easier without the slowdown? Do the Neo Geo Cores on Mister also have a turbo mode for Metal Slug titles?
Both of these games are more about careful positioning and planned movement, rather than reactive dodging. Interesting games to learn, and quite consistent once you get the strategies down. Oddly enough the most difficult dodge in In The Hunt (the fast-bullet spread on the final boss) has no slowdown on original hardware, but there's a trick to sneak around the sides so you don't need to dodge it anyway.
It all just depends on how the game is developed. Some games tie game speed to frame rate. Others lag when the CPU can’t keep up. But it’s not a given that the CPU speed dictates game speed if overclocked last the target framerate

It’s always awesome to have options. OG speed for some and turbo for others!

He’s legit for sure. Plus it’s bringing more love to Irem games that aren’t as well known as other stuff
That reminds me of the unofficial NeoGeo turbo core...that had to be a couple years ago. I wish they would just incorporate that feature into the main core.
I am surprised it never got folder into one
Finally In The Hunt runs just how people remembered it.
It’s funny everyone forgets about the slowdown til they play again
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah the ps1 turbo options has made those arcade ports superior to most of the originals. The salamander collection is a great example
PSX turbo core is another great example of a secondary core doing great things
I really hope this and neo geo get integrated into the main core as options
I hope the Neo Geo turbo cores can run as smoothly as this too. Metal Slug can still be a bit weird

Yes when both options exist there is something for everyone
the problem for me is how the slowdown comes and goes so frequently
having a consistently smooth playthrough is great
It’s a bit harsh on certain Irem games for sure. Same with Metal Slug 2. Which inconsequentially was made by ex Irem staffers

I’ve never loved Double Dragon. It’s fine but I never clicked with it

CAVE def factored it in. Irem not so much
The original "bullet-time"! :)
Haha one way to look at it for sure
I thought it was slow motion to make explosions more dramatic as a kid. Haha 😂
I mean you aren’t WRONG in a way
Tough to say whether or not slowdown in a shooter is good. Totally depends on the game. I can't imagine playing CAVE stuff without it.
oh no CAVE without slowdown would be a disaster. Like a toilet without a bidet to Dorfus
@@VideoGameEsoterica Ugh don't speak of such horrors

Exactly. And in these instances (especially GunForce II) it’s definitely slowdown due to limitations and not planning
I’m gonna steal it one day and watch you become non-functional
this is incredible
It’s a legit awesome feature
Just amazing ❤
It really is legit awesome
Awesome Video!🤩
Glad you enjoyed it :)

I wouldn’t agree they get more difficult but that’s me
This core is so awesome it almost like Switch Console vs. PC emulation...but that kind of thing doesn't exist, RIGHT? RIGHT!?! VGE ;-)
Haha

It’s like RetroArch in some ways but not in how it “runs”. FPGA replicates original hardware chip designs
Can this be done with the Neo geo games such as the the metal slug games?
There is a turbo core already for the Slugs
Do you find Gunforce II & In the Hunt harder or easier without the slowdown? Do the Neo Geo Cores on Mister also have a turbo mode for Metal Slug titles?
I find both easier to be honest. In the Hunt more so than GunForce II

Nothing beats a good cheese strat
How is that achieved? Shouldn't the entire game be sped up by increasing the cpu speed? Amazing!
Not necessarily. “Game speed” isn’t always tied to cpu cycles
@@VideoGameEsoterica I thought that was standard in that console generation...awesome anyways!

Yeah I’m not touching anything past GameCube ever. Not my fight
Id vote on fast and furious. Unless specifically programmed to slow down, play it turbo
In the Hunt MAY be programmed to slow down. Hard to say. But GunForce II def wasn’t intentional
Great video! Could you send me a link please and is it just the .rbf file I need? not the .mra?
