Thanks man! You’re right, there are quite a few NES ports of games available on MiSTer. A lot of them aren’t too bad and quite a few could be argued are better.
I grew up close to a large international airport too and used to head there with friends from the mid 90’s onwards as they had a great selection of arcades there. Got some vivid memories of playing Killer Instinct, Daytona, Sega Rally (the multiplayer sit-in car versions!), Primal Rage, the Aliens game with the mounted lightgun (Alien 3 I think?), Mortal Kombat etc, etc. The airports back then were actually encouraged as places to visit for non-travellers with lots of shops and restaurants, kind of a “bring the kiddies along for the day and watch the planes take off” sort of thing lol - all changed after 9/11 as you mentioned though and seems unbelievable looking back now. Good times though!
It is wild right? The airport I mentioned was also an old army base so there were a lot of military craft and cool things like that to see. Yours sounds like almost a mall with the benefit of air travel, lol. Also sounds like a legit arcade with all of those top games. Weird.
@@ScarletSprites It really was a legit and impressive arcade within an airport (there were 2 arcades actually) - I was fairly blessed as a youngster with having a good selection of arcades close-by. I still live near the airport (London Gatwick) but it’s all changed now with most of the shops and restaurants beyond the security clearance. No real arcades either sadly! I Googled the Alien light gun arcade and it was Alien 3 - the cabinet is an absolute beast! I forgot how cool it was with those big guns.
Used to play Moon Patrol a lot at my local chippy. My favourite MiSTer arcade cores include Strider, Commando, Side Arms, ... off top of my head. I would really love to see Rodland ported over
I'm really happy that both Tron games are on MiSTer, I restored some original Midway grip controllers some years back for my MAME cabinet and added a push/pull spinner, The MiSTer core supports it perfectly so they are really fun to play with the original style controls. I also really love Moon Patrol, Qbert, and Berserk on MiSTer as well. Like how they simulated the diagonal controls on Qbert for the core.
Tron is a pleasant surprise on here as well. My experience with that is mainly via a cocktail version that was at the local Pizza Hut. If I could get a cocktail cab, that would be the one that I would want.
Glad you showed mercs. One of my favorite games. Even the genesis port is good. The sound effects on qbert sounds great. I hate the horrible mame samples. So a huge plus for playing this on mister.
Oh my goodness Joe I love all of your nostalgic stories, and I have one for you related to the Rush 'N attack story. About five years ago my Daughter was around eight years old and we were in Six Flags Great Adventure in the arcade area closer to " El Toro" We were playing the tower of tickets game and an older gentleman employee came over and started flooding the machine with tokens for us and one other kid to play plus he gave us whatever tickets that he won himself (he was pretty good at the timing of that game) he then let my daughter pick a prise that she wanted which cost more tickets then we had. He told me that when he was younger someone looked out for him in a similar way and he was repaying the favor, it was just a really nice overall experience. On another note I have been absolutely obsessed Metal Slug 2 this past week trying to perfect my game and having a damn good time while doing it. As always thanx for the awesome video.

Cool vid, and cool story about Kung Fu Master, your grandnpa, and the airport. It's funny how our childhood obsessions with arcade games never really went away. I mean, most people liked video games as a kid, but people "in the community" really, really loved them. Like, I remember going to the 7-11 to play SF 2 and when I ran out of quarters, I'd just stand there and watch others play for hours. I'd do the same at the grocery store for Final Fight. Don't even get me started on Aladdin's Castle at the mall on Friday nights.
It’s funny you mention that. Watching someone play a game was ingrained in us LONG ago. I saw someone on Twitter saying Twitch is really just the modern version of that old past time of watching someone play a game when you were out of money.
Great coverage of MiSTer ! It seems that recently, there has been a lot of new Arcade Core development. I'm really starting to think that MiSTer in the current guise is one of the best long term arcade preservation projects EVER !
Loved it. I remember at the top of the stairs there was an Orange Julius on one side and a pizza place directly across. I played a lot of Temple of Doom there.
I prefer the NES version of Rush N Attack since it has better music, but toasting enemies with the flamethrower in the arcade version never gets old :) I sold almost all my pcbs, but I'm keeping Rush N Attack!
I love the NES version as well. Ive been so tempted to grab the pcb when it pops up but it just seems like at this point I can roll with MiSTer. I’m trying not to buy stuff that I already have solutions for.
I got a lot to say, which is nothing new, but here it goes! I don't play arcades on my MiSTer much, mostly just lag free console games which is what I am into more as they are far more accessible to me (still love arcades). What I can do is talk about the games you mentioned... See, for me, what I like about channels like yours and people that are our age is... talking about the games we experienced. Video games are a strange thing. They have a way of imprinting themselves in our memory much like say... a "first" in your life might. "First kiss", "The day you took your driving exam", "the day a loved one died", "Graduation", "That time you got arrested drinking beer on a baseball field"... that kind of stuff. You can name almost any game in the history of my life, and I can probably tell you... how I played it, when I played it... and what I thought about it. So that's what I'm going to do with your picks. I think this is what is interesting... trading experiences and relating (or not relating, which can be just as fun). Kung Fu - This is a game I actually played first on the NES. My best friend Harry had this game. He was the second kid I knew that had an NES. He was a bit spoiled as an only child, and his parents bought things like GIJoe's, Transformers and Starwars toys on what seemed like a daily basis with no special occasion needed... which made him a pretty exciting friend to have as he always had something new to experience and share. Anyway, KungFu was one of his first NES games, and we couldn't get very far, maybe the 3rd or 4th floor, but we loved it. I didn't know this was an Arcade port till later as It didn't seem to be an arcade I ran into much or pay it much attention due to other games available. So I don't think I ever played this one in the Arcades, but I played a lot of it on the NES. Donkey Kong 3 - This I had played in the Arcade. I played a lot of Donkey Kong as the Pizza parlor down the street from me growing up had it, so when I saw Donkey Kong 3... my first thought was... "What was Donkey Kong 2?? Did I miss something? Who cares, this looks awesome!!". I played this in the arcade around the time there was a Donkey Kong Sunday/Saturday morning cartoon... so I might have been what? 6 or 7 years old? I was certain the guy holding the spray guns was Mario because that made sense... but I guess I was wrong all these years. Berzerk - Berzerk was a game I first experienced on the 2600. Evil Otto gave me nightmares... I was probably 4-5 years old. I loved that you could shoot a gun at robots... the walls could shock you to death... and if you took too long, this super creepy smiling ball would murder your face with wonton abandon. I ran into the arcade of this for the first time visiting friends far away. They belonged to a pool, which at that age was a new concept. At this pool they had a recreation hall and they had a Berzerk cabinet. I remember when I saw it, it looked familiar, but looking back I didn't think... WOH, This has better graphics! My reaction was probably more... I wish I was taller so I could see it better. I remember waiting for someone to play it to see what Evil Otto looked like. I wasn't disappointed. Moon Patrol - Aaaaah Moon Patrol. This one I DEFINATELY played in the arcade first, and I saw this one in several places. We saw this game at Pizza Parlors, laundromats and the Arcade down the street had it at one time. Played and watched people play this one a lot. I didn't play Moon Patrol on the 2600 till much later in life as I didn't know anyone who owned it, but I remember going into some REALLY early mall stores that had displays of early console systems like 2600, Colecovision and Intelevision and seeing this on display for the Colecovision. I only knew one kid who had a Colecovision growing up and it was my brothers friend Marc... he was an asshole, but he had a Colecovision... and I remember playing this, and Smurfs using those colorful "gun" like controllers with trigger buttons... and it was quite an experience. Everyone had a 2600, many people had Intelevisions, but almost nobody we knew had a Colecovision... so seeing it was a real treat and a memorable experience. Anyway, Moon Patrol was awesome, that game really kept you on your toes... things in front of you, things over you, shooting, dodging, jumping... very hectic! DoDonPachi - I can't say much about this. I played this for the first time on an emulator when I started getting back into "shooters". I remember watching some RUclips video of a bullet hell game that looked nearly impossible, but someone beat it. It wasn't DoDonPachi... it was sequel
I have so much I’d like to dig into here. It’s wild how you even remember who the *second* kid was to get a NES. It really speaks to the impact that games and consoles had on us. It’s like you said, name the game and I’ll tell you my life experience with it. It was even a treat to be traveling and find an arcade you weren’t familiar with because, oh my gosh, what treasures are there to discover inside!? It was like a scratch off lottery ticket and finding new games you had t seen before. Of course, you were probably told you were wherever you were to do whatever the thing was you were supposed to be doing. “We didn’t come here to play video games.”
@@ScarletSprites The first kid I knew that had a NES was my moms friends kid. Divorced parents and the dad worked in New York. No doubt this kid had a Nintendo before I even new what Nintendo was. All I saw was the “robot video game”. This had to be 1985? I was blown away. It wasn’t till maybe a Christmas later kids started getting Nintendo’s. I played everyone else’s Nintendo because we grew up broke, single mom. I got my NES in Christmas of 1988? By then, everyone I knew had a Nintendo. It was like the Atari 2600… the assumption was everyone had one, it was more of a question of which games you had.
Kung fu master, moon patrol, green beret... I will add 2 recent ones: Iron Horse from Konami and Space Panic from Universal. The last one is one is one I remember when I was a little kid and was one of those games you remember the mechanics but you don't remember the name and it was such a big searching till I found it.
I live in Carlisle PA. I’ve been to the Harrisburg airport many many times. I never saw the Kung fu master cab there though.🤣 The one I played was at the old Sears at the Capital City Mall. Back by the Layaway desk there was a Kung Fu Master cabinet. While my mom was in line at the service desk she would give me quarters to play the game and I absolutely loved it. I ended up getting the Commodore 64 port for Christmas one year and was soooo happy! I have a lot of great memories surrounding that game!
That’s awesome man! Kung Fu was there before the first major renovation was done to the airport/lobby. At the time, the backroad was still open and you could drive a car out to the runways and watch planes land maybe 100 yards away. We used to get ice cream at Twin Kiss and sit and do that. Times have kind of changed.
@@ScarletSprites I remember Twin Kiss!!! Wow, I haven’t thought about that place in years! There is another Twin Kiss in Shermans Dale we used to go to. My Dad used to fly a lot for work so my mom sister and I would go to the Harrisburg airport to drop him off and pick him up, though I don’t remember playing any arcade games there.
It’s worth a few minutes to see if you attach to it. Playing it with the taps on a machine is great, albeit not easy to find these days. I’d recommend using an arcade stick if you can as opposed to a controller/d-pad.
Cave emulation have been amazing for over a decade. I remember playing them Tate mode on my old CRT. I honestly will never understand retro fans who just completely ignores the emulation scene and all the amazing work there.
Yes, but this isn’t a software emulation video or about the history of ways to play Cave games. It’s a rundown of my personal favorite cores that are available on a specific device.
Moon Patrol is still an amazing game and a timeless classic. I play it all the time on Switch and MiSTer and it's my favorite game on the Vectrex. (Known as Vector Patrol.). Also a fan of Donkey Kong 3 and I've never met anyone else that was. Have you ever tried Q*bert 3 on SNES? I think it's fantastic! 👍🏻
Not only are people not fans of DK3, there’s also a fair amount of backlash for it. It could have very easily been Mario and DK again but they introduced Stanley! I just love the changes while keeping small pieces that tie it to the original. I’ll have to checkout QBert 3 again. It’s been a long time.
I have surprisingly not played very much Qix. I’m aware of it, just never spent any real time. That’s awesome when you can see the games are still addictive enough to connect with a younger audience.
@@ScarletSprites Progear is on the MiSTer as well. I believe it was a joint venture between Cave and Capcom. Definitely plays like a Cave game. Kind of odd in that it's Yoko.
@@riggel8804 yeah progear definitely reminds me of metal slug games. It has very beautiful artwork also. Unfortunately it's bullet hell even on easy which makes it hard to enjoy all the beautiful graphics.
@@jimechols4347 when I first start working on an autoscroller, like Progear, i will credit feed and not even move my ship. I just drop bombs and shoot. I do this for a playthrough or two just to appreciate the artwork.
Great list. I dig the stories. I just recently played MERC on the Mister. Didn’t even realize it was on there. Also.. man.. now I need to play Kung Fu Master.
I didn’t know it was considered a sequel to Commando until recently. Just had assumed so many games copied each other that this was just another case of that. I don’t know how well Kung Fu Master will translate to modern times for someone with no nostalgia, but I wouldn’t discourage trying it out. Just pretend you’re living in the mid 80s and nothing beyond that exists I guess.
Niiiiiice! Tapper is excellent! I had never played it back in the day and experienced the game for the first time around 6 years ago. I know this is off topic, but is it possible to pop a standard jamma board Into the MVS? Figured you would know more than anyone. I keep skipping out on decently priced pcbs because I do not have a standardjamma cab yet and was wondering if I could just slap and game in the neo geo anyway as a temporary solution 🤷♂️
You need the Big Red adapter from JNX or an equivalent product. The audio pinout is slightly different and you risk ruining your Jamma board by plugging it into an MVS harness.
Buddy introduced me to the channel with this video. Def my kinda content. I really enjoy playing Knights of the Round and Alien Vs Predator on my MiSTer!
I've played through Shinobi Arcade, Last Resort and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the MiSTer this year. Most games play better on the MiSTer compared to FBNeo in my experience. For example, when playing Last Resort on FBNeo, if there was slow down I couldn't lock the gun pod. Thankfully this doesn't happen on the MiSTer. Super Turbo, on the other hand, seems to play just as well on FBNeo as on the MiSTer. I love the stories, especially the one where the arcade operator gave you a stuffy. Thanks for sharing.
You do bring up a great point about availability. It’s nice to have options. I still flip over to MAME for stuff not yet available on MiSTer; all those Konami and Midway games. Hopefully we get them more places in time.
What a list of awesome games on the MiSTer Arcade Cores Scarlet. I can see why you like them so much. Heck, I would put the majority on my likes list as well. Kung-Fu Master, Donkey Kong 3, Moon Patrol, Q*Bert, Tapper...What a list for sure bro. Love these timeless classics. 8^) Anthony..
Those are great recommendations. Still on the fence with Mister but I have been planning on using it mainly for arcade rather than console. Got some plans for how to house it
I’ve been using it for almost everything lately. It’s just been too damn convenient honestly. Even my Analogues get played far less now. I don’t think you’ll regret jumping in.
@@ScarletSprites The same thing basically happened to me. I bought an Analogue Super NT and an FX Pak Pro before I discovered the MiSTer. Although I would never sell my Analogue and flash cart, I hardly touch it ever since I got my MiSTer. It’s just that good! It’s so convenient and the amount of cores I have complete collections for is just insane. No regrets here either!
I'LL invest in Mister Once it can give me a true Arcade experience of Batman Forever The Arcade Game. Till then the Mister and its FPGA buzz word is just a fancy way of saying hey its still Emulation just slightly better ! ( I still want the Arcade PCB) But that's just my opinion. Side note, The Tapper Game is awesome my local barcade out here in Los Angeles has it and they do have the Tap handles. That's only way to play that game. Those Tap Handles go for a lot of money these days too on ebay if you want it for your own cab.
That game is an outlier even on the ST-V unfortunately. I can play it with the multicart but it needs the soundboard in order to have audio. I usually just pop in the movie soundtrack. Hopefully one day though we get the ST-V core for this. Arcade systems that unlock multiple titles seems to be the largest draw. Agree on the tap handles, I just love that that was a thing.
Good luck with your hunt. Everyone has unique needs and there are certainly enough options out there to keep people busy. I’m sure you’ll make the right choice for yourself if you keep in mind what titles or platforms are truly important to you.
The story about the stuffed animal is everything. To the team at the FunZone at Riviera Lanes 🎳 in Akron Ohio that sent me down a huge pinball rabbit trail….in addition to Mortal Kombat and II, Street Fighter II, and NeoGeo MVS (Baseball Stars 2, 🐌, Bust a Move). We held it down, fostered the Black Keys, and loved our arcades.
Wait, so lemme get this strait.. you have all those cabinets and not a single dedicated vert cab??!? There are enough vert games out there to warrant a dedicated cab for someone at your level even if vert games weren't your preference! Get on that!
Yep, that’s correct. The plan was to get a New Astro City for a dedicated vertical setup but it has yet to happen and is growing less and less likely by the day.
Be careful on the Berserk game! Remember...those three deaths attributed to it. If you get the high score past 66600 or 666000 you might die. Well at least that's the legend lol but I'm joking those are just myths

Wow I’m not sure I’m too familiar with those either. I’ll have to watch some gameplay on RUclips. Thanks for sharing your picks!
Kung Fu Master is STILL one of my go to’s on NES to this day! I absolutely love that game
It’s arguably better on NES imo. Visually maybe not so much but it controls better than the arcade version. It just feels more snappy.
I live in Carlisle PA. I’ve been to the Harrisburg airport many many times. I never saw the Kung fu master cab there though.🤣
The one I played was at the old Sears at the Capital City Mall.
@@ScarletSprites
I remember Twin Kiss!!!
The tapper cabinet is so cool, I bet the game is fun too I've never played it though
It’s worth a few minutes to see if you attach to it. Playing it with the taps on a machine is great, albeit not easy to find these days. I’d recommend using an arcade stick if you can as opposed to a controller/d-pad.
Darn im old..i remember playing all the original ones
Nice story with your granpa when was on airport to play Kung Fu (nice one) ✌🏻
Really was something I’ll never forget. I know it sounds strange but it was a really great memory.
Sooo cool! Definitely checking out a Mister. Thanks man!
It’s worth it at this point. The Neo and CPS2 cores make it worth it alone. The consoles are a treat too of course.
I have an orange DK Jr cabinet with DK, Jr, and DK 3 pcbs on a switcher. Always loved DK3, and it's the game that I play the most in that cabinet.
Always found it funny when donkey Kong punched the beehives
Animal on animal abuse.
Thanks for sharing your game choice, I'll definitely try some you mentioned 😁
Nice man! Let me know what you think.
Thanks! Remember Pengo also clearly
Such a fun game and an iconic arcade cabinet too.
Eerily similar to me in all games Joe, the only difference I never had a Qbert around me but I had a Qix. My kids are crazy good at Qix, no fear.
I have surprisingly not played very much Qix. I’m aware of it, just never spent any real time. That’s awesome when you can see the games are still addictive enough to connect with a younger audience.
Ohhhh Joeee dont tease me with and DoDonPachi games it’s too good. The love I have for these games is over the moon 🌙 ❤️ 🌙
Getting Cave games on MiSTer is phenomenal. I really hope we see more pop up!
What about Strikers 1945 on the Neo Geo for a vertical shoot up?
Yep, that’s one of my favorites on Neo for the very reason you mentioned.
@@ScarletSprites Awesome, thank you for the info oh wise one! I completely forgot about those adapters!
Buddy introduced me to the channel with this video. Def my kinda content. I really enjoy playing Knights of the Round and Alien Vs Predator on my MiSTer!
Thanks for stopping by and giving it a chance! Glad to have new Neo Geo and arcade people find the channel and join in. Thanks man!
Anthony..
Thanks man, I’m such a sucker for Kung Fu. Glad to see you digging into those non Neo Geo titles too. Lol.
Can you add more arcade cores? I got a preloaded MISTER but I worry about adding more arcarde cores . Would it be difficult?
Not at all. You should be running the Update_All script regularly. That automatically pulls in new and updated cores.
@@ScarletSprites my MISTER FPGA was fully loaded. I dont even know where to find more arcade cores or how to do it without messing it up.
Qbert not having sample speech on MiSTer is a deal breaker.
Incremental improvements and small gains on the way to glory. I still enjoy it as an upgrade over the 2600.
I'm new to MiSTer. Where do I find these arcade cores?
All you need to do is run the Update All script and it will grab everything for you.
I always had audio issues early in Moon Patrol. I even tried a new sd reinstall. I’ve seen other people say they have the issue. Was it fixed?
Still seems to be an issue from what I can tell unfortunately.
We need Star Wars, Missile command, tail gunner, disks of tron, Star Trek
It’s not emulation, it’s hardware simulation. Not the same thing.
Green berets was in my dreams as a kid
It’s such a fun game. Basic, but that’s the beauty; pick up and play.
Kung Fu Master is my fav in 80s
It really hit home even as a kid. I’ve been tempted to buy a cabinet for it but I don’t know that I love it THAT much.
I just started playing Willow on the mister. I... think thats a CPS1 game? Loads of fun anyway
It is! I think I showed a brief clip of that in the MiSTerCade video. Having CPS1 games on here is HUGE.
And now in 2022, what’s your favorites?
That’s a good question. Maybe a good end of year MiSTer in review?
someday i will get cave roms on my mister fpga. someday...
Hi did you end up completing your neo geo collection
I did, a little while back. There’s a video on getting the last game somewhere. But yes, it’s all done!
@@ScarletSprites yeah just watched it 👍
Still on the fence between waiting for astgames core max with coinopsx, a super console x king, or a MiSTer. I can't decide!
Good luck with your hunt. Everyone has unique needs and there are certainly enough options out there to keep people busy. I’m sure you’ll make the right choice for yourself if you keep in mind what titles or platforms are truly important to you.
Thx to X-men children of the atom Akuma is a secret hidden playable character the reason we got marvel vs capcom series
What an era right? I was jacked to play as him on SSF2T for 3DO. It blew my mind.
@@ScarletSprites yep TopHatGamingMan have a video about it
The story about the stuffed animal is everything.
Nice shout out. I knew there would be others that have some great memories as well. Thanks for sharing yours man. ✊🏼
Challenge accepted! I’ll keep you posted…or, I won’t.
God....I have fairly different taste from yours.
Then shout out your top ten…
