People have been sharing seeds for thousands of years, so why all of a sudden is it that people can no longer do what have been done since the beginning of time?
I don't think Monsanto has anything to do with this one. It looks like a power grab by the dept. of agriculture in some states revolving around the states' laws on commercial sale or distribution of seeds. The petition mentions the Pennsylvania Dept. of Ag. adopted a policy restricting the Simpson Seed Library in Mechanicsburg, PA, from distributing seeds.
wing tweet Yes. These laws are being enforced in recent years as there are so many now avoiding buying GMO and the organic movement is making an increasing presence in food purchases. People are heading to local farmers markets and the demand for organic non-GMO foods is skyrocketing. Corporations like Monsanto want to run a monopoly on the entire US food supply. Every gardener should order heirloom vegetable and fruit seeds now before new legislation bans that. Buy in bulk, store in vacuum sealed mylar and keep in a cool dry place. Even for those that don't know how to garden they should learn how and order non-GMO seeds. The way things are going there will probably be laws against selling and even possessing non-GMO seed within another 10 yrs or maybe less. Having a stock pile of non-GMO seeds would create a new black market and will very likely lead to the value of heirloom non-GMO seeds to soar in price. Order now while they are still available and cheap and buy in large bulk batches of various non-GMO seeds. They will become a highly sought after item in a few more years and will be a great investment for those who order them now.

FYI, Texas used to have a grain silo program in like the 1900s, that was seen as a competition to federal currency and was shut down. Basically farmers could store their extra grain or seed and get credit for it. It was a really great thing. It was helpful for the farmers that couldn't always sell extra grain, but also protected them on off seasons.
Hi john yes this is so true! I live in Apollo pa and the state made it illegal for us to have our seed library! The library got an email saying they had to disband the seed library immediately. It was heart breaking because so many in our community worked hard to make it a valuable resource for anyone who needed or wanted seeds. Ok, I HATE GMO and HATE Monsanto. But that's exactly what is forcing me to be devil's advocate here. If anybody can walk into a seed library and make a donation... what stops them from donating seeds that are GMO? If I walk in and take some of these seeds, how will I know they aren't GMO??? Also, what about hybrids? Someone might donate seeds from an awesome pepper that happens to be an F1 Hybrid. As everyone here knows... F1 Hybrids may be sterile. Or if not, the seeds they produce don't breed true, meaning you might end up with a really gross pepper plant. I'm all for open-pollinated, heirloom varieties and the sharing of them. However, I would NEVER trust one of these libraries since there is no way to know what I'm really getting. And if the seeds aren't fresh, the germination rate could be quite low (depending on plant type of course). I might trust my 60 year old aunt May to supply seeds, but not an anonymous seed bank. Sorry John, it just seems like people are outraged for the sake of being outraged.
Its not just about the seed itself. When Government gets involved into it, they look to ways to make the fruit or vegi bigger and faster. They care not if it tastes better or if it held it nutrients...more money...

This reminds me of the law they past on handmade toys. I was making one of kind soft sculpture toys and selling them on etsy. The new law states that each version of a toy must go through testing to ensure its safety ($500+). Not so bad if there's one prototype, that a large company is rolling out (under a standard manufacturing process), but for home-crafters it means every single item would need to pass testing - to legally sell. In Idaho, in the front of the library, they have free seed donated by local citizens. You don't need to check anything out or required to give anything in return, just free for the taking or giving.
I,ve bought heirloom seeds through the mail. This is what happens when government gets too big. It becomes corrupt. Large companies with lots of lobbying money get their way every time.
Hi John! I really enjoy your videos and always get a ton of information out of them. I live in Minnesota and am a Master Gardener and a Master Recycler and Composter for our local county. I am in these programs to do exactly what you are doing and that is to promote and educate people on the benefits and joys of gardening and being good stewards of our beautiful planet. I signed the petition on this issue but I also wanted to update you on how legislation is progressing here in our fine State. Here is a link to a bill that has been proposed to allow most seed sharing organizations and individuals to legally share seeds without requiring them to obtain a permit or test their seeds for germination rates. www.revisor.mn.gov/bills/text.php?number=SF949&version=0&session_year=2015&session_number=0 I will be watching this process with a lot of interest and just wanted to thank you again for all that you do! Signed Barb from Minnesota
This is such an important video. I am shocked that this is happening to our neighbours to the South. I wish you success in this lawsuit. It seems like seed-saving should be a right. I hope common sense prevails!!!
I bought tiny plastic envelopes into which I can put small amounts of my many types of seeds. I label them with a sharpie and tape about 20 of them to a piece of nice paper which fits into a standard postal envelope. These could make great gifts to family members. As long as it's legal.
if this upsets you then you really need to vote libertarian....vote for the libertarian party, they support freedom and they want small government. This is a perfect example of what a joke the government has become
Libertarianism supports lasse faire economics which would make things like this worse, not better. Try reading a history book instead of being sucked in by the spin.
Jorie Von Ohlen point is a two party system does not work and is not a free society. Third party would at least help balance things out. But really in the end a 5 party system is the only true free democratic society. Until then we're stuck in a the exact opposite. Slave to the 9 to 5. Paying over 33% on taxes yet no schools worth a dam and starving and homeless people. Stop being sucked into legalized gangs, people! Vote with your heart and study every person history that you're voting for. Just don't scribble in a circle dot because they are apart of your so called gang! Vote and vote wisely!!
Jorie Von Ohlen Wrong, perhaps you, young kool-aid drinking obamabot, should look outside your politically correct comfort area. Trust me, the words won't hurt you.
Michael Hicks agreed! Haven't turned a TV on in 2yrs! Amazing how less stress and all of a sudden I have no need to eat McDonald's! Really turn off the mindless TV people.
I am watching this in 2017 and never knew any of this, I have been sharing and trading seeds of all kinds with a person in France!! I write "flower and vegetable seeds" on the customs form on the pkg and it gets to them with no problem!
I can recommend to watch TED talk from Jaime Oliver in regard to adverse developments with the wrong food! John you are so important for spreading the key message (literally back to the roots) and that there is an alternative to be able to lead a good life! Our children should not die before us with all those processed unhealthily things that surround us for mere profit of corporations.
from what i understand is that some breed of plants are "copyrighted" and when you buy those seeds you agree not to keep or share the seeds after when you are through with the plants. but sharing heirlooms person to person is not illegal. I might not be able to give you a bag of roundup ready corn seed, but giving you a hand full of seeds from my grandma's heirloom tomatoes is fine. At least in my state.
When you go to the site it says...page not found..however if you hit the three lines at the top and pick, sign the letter (I think), that is where you can support this.
This is so important. Thank you for your service on the topic. I think if laws are to get involved. The makers have to support this social service. Witch they aren't. I hail you for your efforts.
Good news ! In Pennsylvania, seed libraries are legal. Regulations apply to commercial growers, not person to person exchanges. Swap those seeds folks !!! 😀Ron KMercer PA
This is why I love the state of Maine -from the Bangor Daily News dated 15 March 2017 byline Julia Bayly "Maine’s seed law allows for this free and open exchange of seeds, according to John Bott, spokesman for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry." That and the fact that it is a 2nd amendment state that allows constitutional carry.
This would explain why 5 years ago I tried to buy garden seeds from a shop in England on the Internet, that sold ALL over the world, except the USA. They said they were banned from selling to the US. 😣
I think that seed sharing should be free and unregulated. But when I buy seed for a specific crop I want to know it is what I am paying for. If you are making a profit from selling seed, then you should be regulated and tested. Maybe a disclaimer for a library would work in reference to seeds. Freeing them from possible lawsuit in case of mislabeled or bad seed.
I live in Maryland and there are several seed sharing from the state itself. there are several specialty seed exchanges that are not illegal from what I can see. Only invasive seeds are illegal
The department of agriculture is a corporate entity and they can regulate another corporation when it's agriculture related, however they can not regulate it If the seed library isn't registered as a corporation. You might want to look in to that and see what it can be done. Nice show.
Question: I do not want to open a seed library right now, because i know absolutely nothing about seeds, but i would like to save them for myself. I want to learn, i do not know how to start. Like i eat a fruit and want to save the seed but i do not have an organized method and how long i need to live it in the open to dry? etc.
Great job John thanks. Loved seeing your emotion come through in that video ;) shows your passion (even though you did your best to hide it) loving your work, doing good.
I heard about this years ago but back then it was said the laws were only for Monsanto/GMO seeds because they were proprietary - when did it switch to all veggies and Why?
They want to make us dependant on Monsanto for our seeds, and if you get seeds from Monsanto they consider the seeds of those patented seeds/plants to belong to them: they won't let farmers who buy their seeds keep the seeds from their plants to plant them again next year: keeps them dependent on the supplier and on their GMO's.
My wife and I grow a large garden every year. No chemical fertilizer or pesticides. All natural growing. Our garden and fruits and vegetables are always commented on how great the taste and color. We give many vegetables away and we freeze many. We save and share seeds.. We will continue healthy growing without Monsanto gmo foods.

Sir, I had to view your vlog on this issue, I start buy heirloom seeds since January before this madness. Respects Alex
So much for the pursuit of happiness . Sounds unconstitutional .
This is such an important video. I am shocked that this is happening to our neighbours to the South. I wish you success in this lawsuit. It seems like seed-saving should be a right. I hope common sense prevails!!!
Next it's human seeds that can't be 'shared."
Tall Cedars they already create " plants" which cant grow fruits......
They already push all that abortion stuff
Eww
Tall Cedars think you've got the nail on the head!! Of course, with all the attacks on human fertility, there may not be many to share!!!

Eva J. True!! Marks and Spencers in UK were plugging stoneless Avacado around Xmas!! Cos it's so hard to prepare them- aawwwhh!!!

Jorie Von Ohlen How would it make it worse?
I am watching this in 2017 and never knew any of this, I have been sharing and trading seeds of all kinds with a person in France!! I write "flower and vegetable seeds" on the customs form on the pkg and it gets to them with no problem!
great, another stupid law I will NEVER follow!
IS THERE AN UPDATE TO THIS? I would love to know if they were able to make progress with this issue. Does anyone know if change was made?
Yeah ....smells of MONSANTO - BAYER...controlling their intests.
I thought America was free... clearly it's not....thank God I live in Africa
Hail Gaddafi and Mugabe! The lies and propaganda of the West and it's murders, suffering, and destruction make me want to cry.
I signed it! This is crazy! Of course we should be able to share seeds!
Drain the swamp!
Thanks for sharing this John and doing all you do to help people. Going to check into this for our region here in North Texas - Nicholas
Thank you John! I signed it while you video was still playing.
I signed the petition and posted to facebook. Thank you for all your video's
from what i understand is that some breed of plants are "copyrighted" and when you buy those seeds you agree not to keep or share the seeds after when you are through with the plants. but sharing heirlooms person to person is not illegal. I might not be able to give you a bag of roundup ready corn seed, but giving you a hand full of seeds from my grandma's heirloom tomatoes is fine. At least in my state.
Thank you for posting this and shedding some light on this topic from leaders in the field. :)
In my state, we have seed libraries at every library branch. Kudos to the folks who organized it in Hawai'i.
What is the update on the petition, and has the laws changed?
Freeing them from possible lawsuit in case of mislabeled or bad seed.
signed and shared my friend... thanks for informing me on this.
Don't know if we are late, BUT, Signed.
The link for this petition is dead. Does anyone have any updates on this case?
Thank you for the video. Do you have a video on how to harvest, save and store the seeds?
I live in Maryland and there are several seed sharing from the state itself. there are several specialty seed exchanges that are not illegal from what I can see. Only invasive seeds are illegal
What happened to this in the 2 years this has been out? Like did he help them?
The department of agriculture is a corporate entity and they can regulate another corporation when it's agriculture related, however they can not regulate it If the seed library isn't registered as a corporation. You might want to look in to that and see what it can be done. Nice show.
Question: I do not want to open a seed library right now, because i know absolutely nothing about seeds, but i would like to save them for myself. I want to learn, i do not know how to start. Like i eat a fruit and want to save the seed but i do not have an organized method and how long i need to live it in the open to dry? etc.
I really love this idea! I'm going to do some more research on this. Thanks!
Great job John thanks. Loved seeing your emotion come through in that video ;) shows your passion (even though you did your best to hide it) loving your work, doing good.
We've been saving and sharing seeds in a VAST group on FB for a long long time.. all over the U.S.
These tests are important for the large seed distributors. You should emphasize that it is small libraries that are exempt.
I will continue to share seeds, and spread the seeds where ever I go, and seeds of information pertinent to this video.
Crazy restrictions! I hope we can save the seed library's storage
