tmi on the internet, but a couple of days ago, i bombed a big exam in a language i'm functionally fluent in. i decided to take my mind off it all by doing a poetic translation of half, which has been my favorite milgram song even through t2 and was also a favorite of my parents when i showed them the milgram project. my grandma just died, too, and getting an es cover of half yesterday (which i didn't think would get a cover because of how long it took to reach 1mil views) has been keeping me up and running right now. this song was already beautiful and takeuchi has done a brilliant job bringing kazui to life thus far, but amami's take on this song being released while i was already in the midst of working on my own is making so so happy.
this made me rethink my opinion of half. its actually a very nice and beautiful song. totally not because es covered it and i'm extremely biased. nuh uh.
I thought about the feminine voice who sang along with Kazui in Neo-Neon which sounded like Es' voice actor. So instead of imagining this as Es' voice I thought of Hinako singing this instead.
Honestly - I think Es in the context of trial 1 is mirroring all the victims, and in trial 2, the witnesses, so I kind of by default assess the covers we've gotten as being aligned with the victim's point of view, and Es singing this 'like Hinako would' tracks immensely. I can and will be silly about this - the 'fuu' in Umbilical sounds more like a baby noise, Es being /that/ bitter in Bring it On, and- because I'm always like this - seeming to oscillate between the male and female-coded voices in Weakness, with them in dual-harmony for the lines Haruka whispered right before each chorus.

The issue with Kazui here is that "half" doesn't seem to be primarily addressing Hinako as the "you" in the English translation. "try to touch you but you probably won’t notice" wouldn't make sense, since Hinako appears to love him quite dearly and notices little things about Kazui's mannerisms at the start of Cat. "Only if your heart would change but that’s not possible" could only apply to Hinako if Kazui were wishing that Hinako would /stop/ loving him, which would make sense from a character standpoint. Kazui is a very back-and-forth character who has stated in his interrogations that he hates the way he was born to the point where he wouldn't want to be reborn as himself, but who also defines the ultimate love as a state where he would be able to live as his true self. Because of these complexities and the added context to half we have now thanks to Cat ans the T2 interrogation questions and voice drama, I would go so far as to claim that "half" is addressing the subject that the green apple represents in the music videos. It's up for debate right now whether it stands for his true self, men as a whole in a gay sense, a specific man he harbors romantic interest for, or multiple of those things at once. (I would argue in favor of the first and/or last points.) tl;dr I definitely don't think that Es' half cover aligns with Hinako's point of view. I think the Es covers show Amami's singing style for Es quite consistently, and there are no nods to Hinako's presence either literally or metaphorically in this cover. However, the Neo-Neon Hinako idea is very interesting and I'll vouch for it considering that the original version didn't have that sort of echo and it would definitely be easiest and the most obvious choice to just record Takeuchi for all the vocals. Unfortunately, we don't have the credits for the female vocals in the Kazui Neo-Neon cover, but they absolutely don't sound like Es.
Well if we want to view this as Hunako's perspective we should maybe push it a little? I personally feel that, while Kazui's revelation was the breaking point, it wasn't the only reason for her suicide. Probably their relationship as a whole wasn't working well, there had to be some emptiness due Kazui's lies. I remember that at first glance half seemed directed towards her and later on people realized it was directed to his other half, the one he hides. So if we want to go along with the theory we could say that this is how she felt after the revelation? Her half could be the half that loves him, even if he never will the same way. We could try analyzing all the lyrics from her perspective but that'd take a long time although personally could see them fitting.

Kazui's version sounds resigned because it's like he held on for far too long while Es' sounds like they are still trying to hold on to something has been slipping away. i know it's the same song but i'm just getting two different vibes: "i have to let go" (Kazui) and "i want to hold on" (Es). Still, i still love both versions and i'll be listening to these on repeat soon.
I COULD NOT AGREE MORE YOU VOICED MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY in es' voice it sounds like there's still some longing but in Kazui's it's like he's already accepted the fact that he's lost her and he's reminiscing the memories instead of regretting his actions, whereas es' voice sounds remorseful like AHHHHHH

This happens in other covers they say nothing in the intended story connects to it but when we say shut up am connecting them it's very cool
