The derogatory connotation of Smooth Jazz due to some less than stellar players who aire more toward commercial success than musicianship is such a shame. People such as Norman, Mark Whitfield and George Benson prove that mixing modern popular music with stylings of Jazz, the popular music of the early to mid 1900's, is nothing to scough at.
