Who were the Rangers of Middle Earth? | Lord of the Rings Lore | Middle-Earth

- The Rangers of Middle-Earth are by far one of the most mysterious and intriguing factions in the Lord of the Rings Mythos. Though the Rangers of the North and the Rangers of Ithilien had very different cultures and history, they shared a common origin, being the Dunedain and the Numenoreans and they were amongst the fiercest foes of Sauron. Thanks to their dedication and hard work, the wild lands of Eriador and Gondor were kept safe, though their sacrifices and deeds would often go unappreciated.

Hey guys I hope you’re all doing ok! I’m pretty sure this video is the second longest one I’ve ever created and I’m really happy with the way it turned out! I’m excited to know which faction you’d prefer to be between the Rangers of the North and the Rangers of Ithilien so feel free to share your thoughts on this in the comments below. As always subtitled are available and feedback is welcome :) Another Lord of the Rings RUclipsr named Men of the West will also be covering this topic later this week so be sure to send him some love from the Geek Community!
GeekZone This is excellent.
It's Awesome
GeekZone thank you - I’ve always liked the Rangers as some of the most mysterious peoples on Middle Earth! Their history bound in darkness and evil gained a strength most men of Middle Earth never achieved! I’ve always thought that somewhere their blood was mixed with some of the elder races due to longevity of life, a deep understanding of the land and skills with both weapon and lore way beyond normal men! I’d like to think they lived on into the age of men and their skills, knowledge and prowess would be needed more with the eleven races gone! After all the dark races - Orcs, Trolls and evil men are all still around! Also does anyone know what happened to The mines of Moria in the 4th age?
GeekZone one of your top videos. Great job 👍
Why not do a video about who would be the next Dark Lord because I think after the ending of the Lord of the Rings Sauron properly will be too weak to come back so what are your thoughts about it
shout out to all the illustrators who make these videos such a visual treat to watch 📣
I wish we saw more of the Rangers. I was genuinely sad to find out they were slaughtered while defending the Shire
Yeah I know :( Perhaps one of the later seasons of the upcoming LOTR series might explore the fall of Arnor and the history of the Rangers.
@@GeekZoneMT That would be awesome!
@@GeekZoneMT That won't happen. They can't touch anything in the Third Age.
@@SuperQuebecois Yes, but Elendil and Isildur lived in Arnor during the Second Age. The Kingdom did exist then. Also Elendil was the High King of all Gondor and Arnor.
It was alot of things in the books they didn't put the movies. But that's Hollywierd for u.
I would love to be a Dunedain Ranger. There's no greater calling in fantasy and the real world than protecting others.
I'd rather be a Ranger of The North. It seems like they had more freedom to roam and act independently.
Yeah though living such a recluse life would be kinda sad
Dominic Omegon They had really hard lives though, But they were also hardier and lived longer
@@GeekZoneMT I would rather be a recluse I prefer my own company
GeekZone maby but at the Same time I Feel they have more of a Stick Together To The End Relationship Like when they came to Help Aragorn
Dominic Omegon Same Here My Friend
I wanna be one of the Rangers of Ithilien... close to the borders of Mordor keeping Gondor safe.
I like to believe Faramir's rangers that survived was a part of his White Company.
Great video thank you!!
I'd Love to be a Ranger of the North.Arnor is one of my favorite kingdoms of men, and I wouldn't have to worry about the constant threat of Mordor, and would be able to relax in the Pony, while simultaneously gathering info on any nearby rumors of danger.
Yeah, Arnor is one of my favourite kingdoms also! I hope we get to see more of it in the Lord of the Rings series!
The way I see it:
Rangers of the North: SAS operatives. (Small group reconnaissance and pinpoint attacks)
Rangers of Ithilien: commandos (Larger group hit and run strikes)
Both really cool, both descended from Numenor, and both beyond the ability of most men.
Hah, I had that very same idea while working on this video!
Well you sure can get quite good being a ranger when your raised into that live style and live 2 to 3 times as long as a normal man. Aragorn was like 60 when he fought in the lotr books.
@@joedemelfie5509 actually he was about 87 I think your right though you would know the lor of the land and how to Fight a lot better when raised to defend your people
@@joedemelfie5509 Now you understand why real women like an older man!; 😉
The Dunedain Rangers are what originally got me into Middle Earth lore. Interesting stuff that. Anyone ever watched the “Born of Hope” fan film? It’s pretty good and involves the Dunedain before Aragorn II was born.
Yeah if I remember correctly it featured Arathorn the second. Great fan film!
It did. And Elrond’s sons were in it too. You could tell they put effort into it. I like that about certain fan films. The passion, determination, the people willing to do it when they clearly don’t have to. Which in turn makes me nervous about the Amazon tv show involving Middle Earth. Especially since Tolkien’s son sold the rights before he passed away. Will there be put effort and passion put into it or just do enough of the work to get their next paycheck? Feels like Disney all over again. But we’ll see what happens.
Have to say, you are solely responsible for me appreciating the incredibly deep lore that Tolkien created, thank you for all of your effort!
That's awesome Zack and it really means a lot to me! I'm glad I could introduce you to Tolkien's awesome mythos :)
@@GeekZoneMT I had always loved the movies etc, but you add a certain element of genuine depth to the lore , bringing it to life! Again, thanks!
It all begins with The Silmarillion, Zack. Read it.
@@panicrev555 You've been Liked! Love, The Ranger of Likes.
@@frenett1 might I suggest men of the west lotr videos as well as the explorer series lotr videos as well. Solid stuff like this guy does at least with lotr. The Explorer series has gone off the deep end after star wars and lotr.
I remember when watching "Lord of The Rings; The Two Towers" with my family for the first time, I found myself immediately drawn to the Rangers of Ithilien. "If I were in Lord of The Rings, I think I'd be a Ranger of Ithilien," I said to my dad when we were having a fun conversation about Lord of The Rings. They're amazing warriors!
You and Men of the West should do a collaboration video together.
We hope to do so in the future, just have to find the right topic!
I would LOVE to see something like this! Maybe a video speculating on predictions for the Amazon series in addition to casting news (once we get a few more names)?
Dude I just found both of these channels a couple of days ago! Loving it!
@@GeekZoneMT What if you did a 'What If' collaborative debate to share perspective and create a united ending?
The Rangers of Ithilien seem to be Tolkien's analogy to a "chosen people". Of all the mortal men, they seemed to be the most regarded and trusted by the Elves and the Maia.
Definitly a ranger of the north. More freedom, more places to travel to and more stories to tell at nights sitting by a fire.
I love that one of their traits is how connected they are to animals, I mean Aragorn's horse carried his heavily wounded unconscious body all the way back to his friends when he fell off that Cliff talk about a loyal steed
I am of the belief that because of the unwavering service generations of Dunedain serving as "Rangers of the North" helped to enhance Aragorn's claim to the throne. After every other royal or governmental force of Arnor failed, it was the Rangers that continued to provide a tie to the land, and through act and blood, defending the land and the goodly peoples inhabiting Arnor, gave credence to Aragorn's claim.
Love to see you spreading love to other channels, it show people can make the same type of stuff and still get along. You two should do videos together some time
We might in the future :) I'd also highly recommend the philosopher's games. He's another Lotr youtuber who does an impressive job at explaining the intricate details of the story
GeekZone that would be awesome and I’ll definitely check them out, alway need more lotr
@@lostname9850 I gave you your first Like for your post because I am a Ranger of Likes. I always seek out commenters who post but don't yet have any likes, so they will become part of the family of Liked.
Either or is still a place of honor among men..with or without recognition. I myself would be a Northern Ranger. My deeds would be remembered best by my kinsmen.
Well said my friend!
I love it when two youtubers I like show support for each other. It really says a lot about the type of person you are. Really glad to hear about your collaboration and I very much enjoyed this video.
Thanks buddy!
these videos and delivery of the lore of Middle Earth are way better than any of my history and literature classes...I'd watch these from beginning to end...Well done...
Cheers buddy, I appreciate it!
Rangers are so cool!!!!! Thank you!
You're welcome Maureen! Any fantasy faction that wears cloaks as part of their uniform is usually pretty awesome ;)
What an amazing video, I never comment or take the time to like or subscribe on youtube, mostly because I'm lazy, but I must say, for people that really enjoy J. R. R. Tolkien's work this is such a delight, a real treat. Your videos are really so well put, this one being one of the best so far, it was a pleasure, thank you so much
Both are amazing, although I tilt more towards the Rangers of the North. Rangers of Ithilien are absolute beasts themselves though taking on Harad and the forces of Mordor
Perhaps a video on the artifacts of middle Earth such as The Dragon helm of Dor Lomin, Aiglos, or Grond?
I've already covered Grond in the past, though I've actually been compiling research on the Dragon Helm in my spare time :)
The rangers are such a cool group. I like the northern rangers better because of aragorn and I liked how they protected the shire. I wish they would have shown the rangers in the movies.
Great video! Please keep posting weekly, i am always looking forward to it!
"He's one of those rangers. Dangerous folk they are wandering the wilds..." Love that scene and this video.
As a Scandinavian I´ve always favored the Rangers of the North!!
That was a really good video! You clearly know the lore very well. Maybe sometime later, you could also speak about Ancalagon, since he was supposedly the greatest dragon. But anyways, thank you so much for these videos, they make my day.
Thank you for the efforts made in this video , the rangers of the north are so underappreciated... Tolkien wrote an illustrated book which contains many infos regarding this interesting topic ^^
Such amazing artwork in this video! I always love seeing different artists' styles and interpretations of the characters.
When Aragorn became king, he was given the ability to choose the day of his death. There is so much more in the books. Btw, in the books Faramir never planned to turn the ring and the hobbits over to his father. Probably the only real distress I had over changes in the film had to do with Faramir, who was one of my favorites in the books. And btw, also a favorite character of Tolkien's.
That said I love the films and how well they captured much of the spirit of the story, and I understand limitations.
I also was disappointed with no Glorfindel, one of the greatest elf lords.
Casting was superb except Faramir and Denethor, whose portrayal was WAY off.
And yes, the Dunedain are big favorites of mine. Maybe it's their quiet bravery and courage.
Great video, well done.
one of your best videos yet! very good
Ranger of the North. Though their realm fell, they continued to serve Middle Earth. Gondor and the rangers of Ilthilien were more Gondor centric.
your videos are excellent! i wish there was a tolkien based game similar to witcher. that would be amazing.
sucks we never saw any other rangers in the movies i always wondered about them and it was never explored
An 18 minute commercial?! Three times?! That’s just insane. I let it run without listening. Thank you for all your hard work.
Makes me sad that the rangers never tried to rebuild Arnor.Would love to see a video about what could be done to rebuild the old kingdom.Great video :)
I'm glad there are people like u and men of the west keeping this alive keep up good work
when i see a geek zone vid:
=Pure Butter in every sense of the word
Canada has rangers in the north to this day, great content mate.
Do they look as cool?
@@GeekZoneMT haha NO THEY DO NOT. Those bucket hats they wear are a national joke.
Tabitha Urukai , that’s a pretty harsh take, damn. Most of the rangers are legit Inuit hunters. They are men and women that survive in very inhospitable areas.
@@shawnchinnery663 Yeah, i was thinking more along the lines of Mounties, who actually are cool, but look ridiculous in the parade uniforms. I know they aren't considered rangers today, but were when the land was being settled. That was the image I conjured at first thought.
Glasgow has them too. Great people.
I really love GeekZone's cover of the works as well as Men of the West. Both do fascinating insights into Middle Earth. Which makes me wonder, does anyone do this for Steven King's Dark Tower series?
Forgot I would be prefer to be Rangers of the North.
Hey Andrew I'm not aware of any :( I've had quite a few comments asking me to cover it, though I haven't read those books yet
@@GeekZoneMT It is quite in depth about all his works and also a great read. He wrote the first 4 in the 80's and the last 3 in the 2000's. BTW the movie sucked.
Always lovely to see a new video karl I'm deep in a tolkien phase again and you are the next best thing to the books and films :)
Aww thanks man, I'm honoured!
Always liked the concept of the ranger, especially in Tolkiens works. Their legacy barely hung together by a thread, making me wonder if it weren't for Elrond, what would have happened to them.
Also wish I knew what song plays at 3:00, been bugging me for ages lol
I don't know if someone mentioned, but your voice is so soothing, like narrating is so good ... and keep up with awesome videos thank you !
Thanks Nenad that means a lot to me! :)
Karl, I believe that this is one of your best videos and it was so unexpected! What a great topic!
Aww thanks Vikki I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This was a really beautiful video and so well told! Amazing job

Rangers apprentice: Halt's peril
My heart lies to North. And I wear the Ring of Barahir myself (the Noble Collection piece is beautiful!)
Very appropriate name for it! ;)
@@GeekZoneMT indeed it is!
Awesome video! Now I always thought that some of the rangers of the north would often act on their own purpose and you know not all of them would have the sense of duty but turns out they all did their part in the protection of the shire and the rest of the lands there.
Thanks man! Hmm I'm sure there would have been a few that had their own agenda, though I feel that since they were considered to be wiser than other men they would have had the wisdom to work towards the greater good
@@GeekZoneMT exactly, its a pity they don't show much of them in the movies rather than those scenes in Bree where they kinda make them look like they are on nobody's side neither good nor bad.
I still don't know why they deleted that scene in The Two Towers (or RotK?) where Aragorn explain to Eowyn that he is over 100 years old.....good world-building.
They must have put it back into the extended version. It is in MY video.
In my extended version it is there and Aragorn says he is 87 years old.
I would like to be a Ranger of the North.
They are undeniably awesome ;)
Hell yeah
I just can't get enough of your accent, it's so unique!
If I was any Ranger in Middle-Earth, I'd rather be a Ranger of Ithilien than a Ranger of the North due to they (Rangers of Ithilien) not actually being kinsmen to anyone.
but Aragorn :'(
They lived shorter though and not around elves and far from the beauty of the shire and Rivendell.
Imagine not wanting to be kin to anyone
I hope Amazon will explore the vast areas of Middle-Earth that we never saw in the lotr and hobbit films. There is so much beyond the tiny area that those movies took place in!
Yessss another video!!! Looking forward to watching it, great work 👊
Thanks buddy, enjoy it!
Amazing channel 🙌🏾 Binging all your videos keep up the great work 👍🏾
Man the music and content is just totally awesome!!!
I would love to be an archer for the shire protection but live like gandalf... just chilling with the hobbits most of the time and keeping the peace at bree.
Brilliant video. I’ve always wanted more information about the rangers.
Simply Brilliant
Woo new video! Thanks for all the content! :D
You're welcome buddy! Thanks for being a part of this community :)
They should make a video game about the rangers EA come on call it middle earth make it like open world
Well the shadow of Mordor series kinda follows a Ranger
Celabrimbor as a wrath possessing a ranger on the black gate that game is good but it is a giant plot hole. And Tolkien is probably turning in his grave. I was thinking something more heroic more epic like the tales of old and the premise could easily be the topic you just covered in your video dude.
I would be men.
@@edtreneer8101 I know what you mean bro I often wonder what it would be like to play a open world Lord of the rings game but without all the "YOU ARE THE MAIN HERO" bullshit, kinda like that battlefield Lord of the rings game where you are just a normal Soldier, Ranger, Orc or Easterling but with more emphasis on the whole survival aspect of things, as I imagine being an Orc from another region (other than Mordor) must have been particularly hard considering the cultural and language barriers.
Rangers ftw!
Excellently crafted lore video👍
Loved the artwork as well👏
Thanks Duncan, we're lucky that there are such talented artists whose works really bring these videos to life!
I'd love to see a series on the Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War series.
Great video Carl! And I’m also a fan of both your work and men of the west or yoystan as he is called. And now that I know you two are good friends I see you as rangers. You I see as a ranger of Gondor while yoystan is a ranger of the north because in his Aragorn video he mentions that he is his favorite character in the legendarium! What do you all think do you agree with me or see them as a same group of rangers?
What a treat! Love the video! More please!!!
You're welcome mate!
I think im going to love this video as the rangers are my favourite
I hope so mate! ;)
This is a great video very well done and with alot of cool information
Keep up the great work!
Thank you for this!
Thanks Jimmy!
Wow first upload since I joined. I've been watching back channel. Love your content

You're welcome Kieran! :)
Another great video! Keep it up! How is that Q&A video coming along?
Thanks buddy :) I've still got to record it, hopefully I'll finish it in the next few weeks or so
I'd love to see a show just about the Rangers tbh. Probably set when they returned to Bree
Thank you so much for making these videos
Fantastic video,Karl!
thanks andrei!
Amazing content as usual. Thank you
Cheers man, thanks for being a part of our community!
I've been waiting for a video on this!
Thank you for your excellent research, I appreciate and enjoy your videos.
You're most welcome :)
Amazing work again man. I would rather be ranger of the north. Because of longer life and I would visit some times you know bree shire and rivendel
Excellent video as usual...
Difficult choice.
I'd have to say ideal would be trained by Aragorn, and lead be Faramir. Faramir is by far my favorite non-fellowship (strictly) third age character.
Yeah I feel the movies didn't do his character justice
This is true. He was one of the few humans who truely resisted any temptation the one ring had to offer and helped frodo and Sam travel safely through osgiliath and away from his dad's grasp. He was probably the best human archer ever as well. His obedient sacrifice trying to retake osgiliath was a very moving part. The books did him more justice.
@@joedemelfie5509 Hi Did you mean to say "trying to retake ministirith"?
@@PresidentHedgehog7956 no because they never lost Minis Tirith. They defended it well till the end. They lost osgiliath. Are you sure your a lotr fan read the books or at least watched the movies?? Pretty hard to miss this simple fact. I didn't mispeak or type. Yes, I accept your mistake. All good. :)
His actor choice was good though. Well done still his role played out.
and that attack on hey shire ended up inventing the game of golf as well we cant forget that key fact
Very good, loved it.
Great video
Such a beautiful presentation. Tolkien's creation is a world of high honor and blackest evil. It mirrors human history in many ways and shows us an ethos that I wish we could live up to. Please continue to create these amazing videos!
Thank you my friend, I most certainly will :)
Oh man, this was wonderful content! Both my daughters just rolled their first characters in AD&D during Christmas and of course they wanted to be Rangers 🌲🌳🌳🌲 Will tell them to watch this! Thanks! 🙏🏻
Thanks awesome man! I've never tried DnD though I've always been fascinated by it :)
They loved reading Lord of the Rings and were so impressed by those that could move in the forests 😊 And they thought Aragorn was soooo cool in the movies and also loved that fan-movie the Hunt for Gollum, so when they had to choose a character, it wasn't so hard. Keep up the great content! 👊🏻
This has to be one of the longest videos. No complaints 😋
Nicely illustrated
I'm glad you two are friends.
I'd rather be in the woods of Ithilien! 🌳
I enjoyed the video very well done
Great video 👍 great lore 👍
The longer the better GeekZone you can only get us more immersed...
Hell yeah a new video!!!
YEAH!!!
Love both you and Men of the West Channels
I'd join either faction if it meant hunting monsters for a living. "Deadly rivals! Dangerous monsters! Infiltrators! And bandits! None of them will stop the Rangers on their triumphant march toward saving Middle-Earth!"
14:15 "Bushwhackin' guerrilla fighters," as Aldo Raine would say.
Ranger of the North. Nomadic, free, but still fighting evil.
Men of the West sent me, really enjoyed your vid.
You're my favorite for this lore. Will you be doing more this win the new Lord of the Rings series comes out?
exellent video...always loved the rangers and sometimes wondered if Aragorn didnt miss his wandering lifestyle after becoming king....one smal "error" or might not be....but it sounds like you say that "together they managed to capture Gollum" ...they did hunt him together but it wasnt untill Aragorn was alone that he manage to capture him...so Gandalf wasnt with him at the actual capturing.
Thanks mate! Yeah I meant that they completed the objective, just wanted to summarise it to avoid going off topic :)
@@GeekZoneMT and on your topic...i would chose to be a ranger of the north. I like that its not so "civilized" region, and you still got Rivendell near....and you can stop in for a beer at the prancing pony :)
