- If you need to square up a block that's larger than your ruler (15" example), you can use freezer paper as a fill-in for the desired size. Here's how: cut off a chunk of freezer paper and fold it in half. Cut the paper at half the width/length needed (8-1/2" for a 16" square). Center up the block under the freezer paper (with the wax side facing down. Press the freezer paper down with your iron. The melted wax will hold on to your appliqué piece. Now line up your ruler with the edge of the freezer paper and trim off to the desired size. Peel off the freezer paper and your block is at the correct finished size.

Never saw it done this way before!!
So glad I found this, tried it this evening…..brilliant! So much less stressful
Wonderful!
This is the easiest way I have seen to square up a block; I will definitely use this idea. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for your help! I’m making a quilt with 16 1/2” blocks. So nice of you share what you’ve learned!!
A reallly clearly explained tutorial, thank you so much for helping me understand paper piecing.
Glad it was helpful!
Completely brilliant! Thank you for sharing this!
My pleasure!
How simple! I was facing squaring up a block that's slightly over 17" this afternoon and - just as you said - voila! Thank you - I'm all set to get squaring tomorrow morning!
Glad it helped!
This is such a fantastic trick Nancy I will have to remember to do this next time!!! Thanks Sharon
Awesome technique! Thanks for sharing a wonderful tip and saving me money. No need to buy a huge ruler today👏👏😊
thank you, thank you, thank you. I have 6 blocks that are 16 inches square and I did not know what to do to square them up perfectly. thank you, thank you, thank you.😇😇😇😇😘😘😘😘
You're welcome! So glad it helped.
I've done a quilt w 12 inch blocks, reversible. Has spirograph embroidery patterns on front and back. I've not had a big enough ruler for a long time so this quilt got pushed back in a draw. I'm doing quilt as you go style blocks since it's reversible, colored bobbin thread allowed this. With this idea I can now finish this quilt. Thank you for this amazing tip. I will use this many many times!
That's exciting! We'd love to see a picture of it when you're done.
This goes into my book of tips...thanks!
Thank you for this tip. I am new to quilting and all tips are a big help.
You're welcome! Glad you found it helpful.
Thank you! So helpful for me!
I'm so glad!
Thank you for that great tip. 24.5 square block freezer pattern works perfect
I was going buy a $77 square ruler but not anymore! Great tip!!!
Brilliant! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Wish I had remembered this trick when I did my giant swoon block! I won't forget it again!
Great tip! Especially for a beginner
What a great idea. Thank you for sharing
Very neat tip! Thanks!
Thank you for my morning tip. You're awesome God bless you.
Thank you!
Great video, thanks
Great idea!
fabulous trick!!
Great idea!! I didn't want to buy a $35 ruler for a quilt I am making so this is awesome!! Question....how hot should my iron be....or what iron setting would you suggest? Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!!' I had been looking for this for awhile. I didn't want to spend 50 bucks on a large ruler.
You're welcome!
Great idea!!😃
Very clever!
Thanks for the tip. I am going to remember it.
Bravo!
This is such a great tip!! Thank you! Is it possible to make an even bigger square?
Yes of course! You can tape pieces of freezer paper together using the blue painters tape so it can be ironed on.
Very cleaver idea
How do you print on freezer paper?? On the shiny side or other??
Question why would you not use the back of the fabric, does it not leave residue?
Hi Maggie - it doesn't leave any residue - you could iron it to the back of you wanted to.
Thx for subbing!!😄
Just watched this great video and will definitely use the freezer paper method to square.
Question: how do you suggest squaring up blocks that have a LOT of HST and hour glasses at the edge to be butted up to the same HST and hour glasses in the adjoining block? So far it’s been a nightmare, especially the hour glasses!
Hi Brenda, I actually tackle lots of HST during the Sunset Over Dublin series - that is the latest series on my channel - check them out :)
Is it okay to cut the freezer paper with a rotary cutter? Won't that make it dull?
All paper will dull the blades.
That is great!
How many times can you use the freezer paper?
Generally the paper can be ironed on to fabric 8-10 times
So clever!! Well-presented, too! I was curious, does it leave any of the waxy "stuff" on the blocks? Thanks a ton.
Hi - thank you so much for liking our videos :) - I always need encouragement!!
No, using freezer paper doesn't leave any waxy at all - I think I have
been using freezer paper for 20 years for one technique or another -
can't live without it!!
Yay! Thanks for responding! I'm so excited to try this!
How do you know that you are laying the freezer paper down on the fabric exactly where it needs to be?? I've never made a block larger than 12" Thanks!
If you crease the paper so that you have center and diagonal registration marks you can center your design. And when you are putting the freezer paper down you can see through it just enough to know where you are putting it.Thanks for watching!!
Thank you
What if you have a quilt block that is larger than the widest part of the paper? Any tips to square those? Thanks.
Sure, tape the paper together .
Does it leave a waxy residue on the fabric?
Hi Anne - it doesn't not leave any residue what so ever :)
I have a 24 inch ruler.
