      He noes drums are the most important part of the music. They give the it emotion. They bring the music up the bring it down . But he gives it this off beat . That takes the lessonier to a whole new level. He's fills are just incredible.

      He reminds me of Neil p e rt. It sounds like he an Neil . Had the same in fluencies. I mean lesson. They have the same ability to create the fills that are just amazing.

    I've been a porcupine tree fan for a very long time, and even though I literally know NOTHING about drums or music in general there was always something about the band that stood out to me. I've been looking into Gavin's work more and more and I'm realizing that it's mostly his playing that makes porcupine tree so very unique. He is a genius in his field.

    I'm glad that the younger drum community still explores Gavin Harrison as "we" did when we first heard of him. I had the chance to meet him at clinic he did in germany. We drank a beer afterwards. He's so grounded and normal and still talks like a drummer who's learning everyday

    Excellent analysis and video, Uzi! The man's a genius. One more thing I like about him is that he gets out these improvised fills (with tiny, bells, hats, etc), in places you wouldn't expect! I love how in the PT live DVDs , Richard always smiles everytime he does these improvised crazy as well as subtle fills. A true gem of our time!

    I first saw the length of this video and thought, "I'm not watching that whole thing!"....22 minutes later..."Really awesome video!" The presentation and editing was very well done, and of course the subject matter. I'm convinced that Gavin has to be an alien, sent here from another planet to impart his wisdom. Grew up a fan of Neil Peart (R.I.P.), but Gavin is on a whole different level. Bravo!

    Great vid. I discovered Gavin back in the 1991 when I first heard "Metropolis" by Incognito in a record store. I just had to know who was behind THAT sound and THAT style. I asked at the counter, bought the album and, to be frank, as a drummer and hardcore Genesis/Rush/Yes fan at the time, he's responsible for opening me up to a whole new world of music. And by the way, your drums don't sound bad at all- They sound like your drums! Keep drumming!

    This was a nice sum up of Gavin's drumming, good job in covering a lot of it, for someone who hasn't heard of Gavin should watch this video. Most people look in a musician as what is their thing, or what genre they are known for, or only what they are into, how they present themselves. But for knowing of Gavin for the past 10 years, his work simply says that his thing is having thoughtful creativity and well rounded connection to any music he feels inspired by. It's hard to come across drummers who cover drumming as a whole without limiting themselves with genres and yet deliver uniqueness to their craft that can be adopted in various music styles. It's good to mention his educational DVDs and books he published over the years, not to mention checking his "recordings" page on his web site , very inspirational.

    II’ve been lucky enough to see Gavin Harrison with Porcupine Tree once and with King Crimson on four separate occasions and from the very first time I saw Gavin play with KC the immediate thing that struck me is that the entire band takes it’s cues from him. Even Tony Levin watched Gavin like a hawk throughout every performance and scarcely took his eyes of the guy. Fabulous musician.

    Very informative video, Kyle. I've listened to Porcupine Tree for a few years, but didn't know that the same drummer also worked with King Crimson and Pineapple Thief. I was lucky enough to see Pineapple Thief last Wednesday in Ottawa. I could NOT stop watching the drummer, even though the rest of the group was stellar. Now I understand why. Your narrated video has highlighted a whole lot I didn't know about music in general, and drumming specifically. Well done Kyle, and keep playing ! Hope you got a good mark on this project. Cheers, Tom.

    I can tell it's GH playing not by what he does (though that is quite obvious) but by how he sounds. You can hear Gilmour or May on guitar and instantly know it's them and for me GH is the same on drums which is some achievement on his part for what is essentially an acoustic instrument. Very interesting how he gets the consistent sound we hear from his attention to how his kit is mic'd up. Who else does that in such detail? Great video 🖖

  • @austin5732
    @austin5732 5 лет назад +13

    Yes, def. To truly understand gavin one needs to be able to pay attention to the small details. Like the way he plays a ghost note or when he plays quarter notes on a ride cymbal when most people would play 8th notes. He does these little things that make a big difference.And a lot of people dont hear that kind of stuff. They want a big 1000 hit RIP down the Tom's or blast beats on the kick drum. All that flashy stuff that gavin can do but chooses not too. That's what really.makes gavin the best ever in my opinion

    Nice compilation. Gavin Harrison is the most tasteful beast behind the drums. One bit of feedback is that I wouldn’t have cut the clips at 16:07 so short. It’s frustrating to be denied the release of the tension built by the blushdas. Otherwise I enjoyed it!

  • @joshuamanton
    @joshuamanton 4 года назад +1

    8:30 the numbers on the screen are showing 7/8 not 7/4. I think that beat is meant to be felt as 7/4, with the quarter notes matching the hi-hat accents

    This is such a great video! You should consider turning this into a series. The mind of a drummer for all different dummers that you enjoy and maybe even ones that you arent familiar with. I'd be very interested to see a break down of say someone like Trey Williams from Dying Fetus. Idk if you're into more heavier death metal at all but hearing your opinion on him or someone like Nile's George Kollias. Anyway, thank you for this amazing video. I hope in the future you might consider doing even more of this!

    It is more than just tuning, mics, and the drums themselves that make up for the sound, it is Gavin’s Chops and articulation that make him sound so great…..
    Articulation is a major factor, how you hit the drums is super important. It is the same way with a sax player or a trumpet player, the embouchure plays a major factor in the sound that is being produced. The embouchure dictates and defines the articulation….
    So you have to add in that factor into Gavin’s sound, more so than his drums, tuning, mics and so on…….
