Just a quick note, he wasn't trying to be funny with those lyrics. He wrote it about a good friend who is serving his second term (20 years) for possession of methampethamine.
These guys are some of the best flatpickers around. Billy was SO good when he was so young too. Doing these licks and runs, flatpicking, is incredibly difficult. Love your channel. Subbed.✌️
That's "If you're gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band." That sir, is a mandolin. As someone else here said, the difference between violin and fiddle is whiskey.
My brother lol. I’m a 62 year old woman of causation persuasion and a new subscriber. This is the first time to your site and that’s all it took for me to love your reaction. I want to see your reactions to: Ram Jam playing Black Betty, kid singing in a guitar shop, Elvis and the black experience (not sure that is the exact
He's playing a mandolin. It is tuned the same as a fiddle/violin, with eight vs four strings. The fiddle/violin (played with a bow) are the same instrument.
Violin has strings Fiddle has Strangs It's all in where and what you're playin..also I believe that dude is playin a mandolin I love bluegrass. Thanks for reaching dude
Your reaction was status quo, 😂🤣& I have laughed my ass to tears. And these dudes are really shredding their instruments. Awesome to see you and so many others not accustomed to such hillbillies enjoy this genre from Appalachia. Kudos from my Carolina lair in them thar hills.lol
Billy is helping get younger folks interested in bluegrass, and I'm here for it. If you like this, check out some old-school Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and Tony Rice joints.
Bill Strings came from a poor background with lots of drug addiction in his family - specifically Methamphetamine. So, he brings this modern topic to Blue Grass. And if you also watch his other videos, Billy plays Blue Grass with a Heavy Metal edge. In fact, he also does covers of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin songs.
The black and white communities are dealing with the same things. In some situations it is slanted, however we are still the same and different and going through the same things. Much love .
Him and his son's duo Shaver was my intro to anything beyond the rock or metal world that caught my ear. Todd Snider wrote "Waco Moon" when he had heard about Eddy's death. RIP to both Father and Son, Eddy def passed way too soon.
LOL Billy good picker, the Appalachian mtn are full of pickers, and the mtn is full of dope, I left cause it was so bad, but this makes me miss the mtn, just needs to clean up a lil and I'm heading back home! oh, and if SHTF, these and country folk are the ones you want on your side!
Fiddle and mandolin are tuned the same but the fiddle is played with a bow while the mandolin is picked. Violin & Fiddle are the same instrument played in a different style (violins are primarily in orchestras where you only play what's on the sheet and nothing else).
I've watched this twice and can't stop laughing!! I hope you fell down the Billy Strings rabbit hole! ( Fiddle is optional but they are awesome with it!)
I discovered Billy strings when I was looking for some decent Grateful Dead covers on RUclips. I love his versions of "China Doll", "Wharf Rat", "Me and My Uncle", and "Loser". Through Billy I discovered Molly Tuttle. You ought to check out some of her stuff, too. Her original "Take the Journey", or her cover of the Rolling Stones' "She's a Rainbow", or my favorite, her version of "Cold Rain and Snow".
I’ve gone down the bluegrass rabbit hole per se for the last two ish years. Been all over. There is some great music to be found. (plenty of not great too, but that is any genre)
You mentioned Billy's music reminded u of the music in O Brother Where 'Art Thou. Billy performs that song from the movie, Man of Constant Sorrow. Check it out. Luv ur reactions! 😊👍
It's a Mandolin it has 8 strings. Difference between a Fiddle and a Violin, the fiddle bridge is flatter (sanded down) so you can easily play multiple strings at once.
Just popping back in to say that Billy Strings will be playing the Grammy's this Saturday April 3rd and is also up for 2 Grammy's, Best album "Renewal" and Performance for "Love and Regret". Thought you might like to know.
Brother i can vibe w you i love seeing people so happy over billy! I feel like we need to meed at a show sometime dude cause the shows are so much more energetic
He was playing a mandolin... a fiddle is country for violin.. so glad you liked Billie Strings ❤️ he's a cool dude.. if you ever get to watch the interview about his dad's guitar, please watch it's an awesome story!
You should go back into his younger days of playing, including with his step father, who taught him how to play. He is pretty much the No ! flat picker there is. He is also in demand with others who want to perform with him. Also, if you want to hear a family young group of Blue Grass perfromers, it would be worth anyone's time watching and listening to Cotton Pickin Kids. They even have some songs, they have written.
That is a mandolin its a 12 string instrument or 6 pairs of strings. A fiddle is just a violin by a different name. And bluegrass doesnt technically have any instrumental requirements. But in general the "backup" stringed instruments are taking the place of a drummer and thats why they tend to be twangy like a mandolin(or hats on the drum) and snappy like the banjo(the snare) and plucky standup bass(like the kick) and then the main guitar is like the lead rhythm parts.
A fiddle is just a violin that has had the bridge flattened a bit. That way you can play more than one string at a time. Itzhak Perlman called himself a fiddler, but he was one of the greatest violinists ever on earth. He was the violinist on the soundtrack of Schindler's List. You should check him out.
Billy Strings “Dust in a Baggie”=Biggie “Ten Crack Commandments.” The former is rural folklore, the latter is urban folklore. And I love the hell outta BOTH songs and artists!
A fiddle is the same as a violin but most likely called such because of the Irish immigrants who brought them over and helped create bluegrass music. The word Fiddle likely came from an Old English word Fithele which in turn probably came from Latin Vitulari.
You brother just subscribed, Great work!! I have a request. Can you react to Roll the bones by shakey graves the audio tree version. Its dope and would really like your thought on it. Have a blessed day
My brother i dig this video. Keep em coming big bro i live for this music. Its made me the happiest person since ive found it. But the story to this song is one of his friends was released from prison for meth and was out on parole and then got busted for literally dust in a baggie that was meth and got sentenced to 20 years for that bro.
OK, what you are looking at is a mandolin; a little 8 string affair that is played like fire. As for the violin vs. fiddle. Both are played with a bow, the difference is a fiddle is played in Bluegrass, a violin in an orchestra! LOL!
A fiddle and a violin are exactly the same instrument, just played differently. It's called a fiddle in country and British folk music, and a violin in classical and pop music. I think that country fiddlers and classical violinists hold the instrument and bow a bit differently.
He's playing a mandalin. There is no fiddle in this song. However, Mandalin & fiddle are related and are usually tuned the same. The difference between a Fiddle & a violin is, you can spill beer on a fiddle. Violin is more of a classical instrument, and a fiddle is more about Bluegrass/Folk/old time music. Hope that helps.
Dude...welcome to some serious genre-bending songwriting, played impeccably in the old style of bluegrass. The songriwting is as epic as the playing. I don't like much bluegrass, I dig mostly rock music. When I hear this, I think of his guitar being played through a Marshall amp. This is the speed-metal of bluegrass, but it's BEAUTIFUL music. This is where the genre is the vehicle for the song. Sometimes, a great song and/or great songrwiting just IS and it transcends your preferences/prejudices with music you thought you didn't like. Review the video/song "Watch It Fall" and think about what is going on in the world around you while you listen to it.
Violin is played with a BOW. Charlie Daniels says, "Johnny rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hot", because that's just only way* to play. Like it's hot. You'll hear in bluegrass alot, one of them say play it hot! Play it like you stole it! You know that type thing. That little thing is a Mandolin. It's very easy to learn, it's easier for folks with little hands to learn compared to guitar.
That's a mandolin, difference between fiddle and violin is bowing style, violin is straight bow, no change in position on the lower strings, fiddle is played with round bowing, it makes a sort of circular motion on the lower strings
I like to explain bluegrass as "the hillbilly blues". It was all about the life & times of the appalachian folk (namely those in the Cumberland Plateau of Eastern KY, WV, and NE TN). But even though this topic is not normally hit on by other bluegrass artists, this is poignant since bluegrass has always sang about substance use/abuse. Traditionally, a bluegrass setup is guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and upright bass. sometimes one of those things will go missing (either fiddle, mandolin, or guitar), but a 5 piece is pretty traditional. My dad was the banjoist in his own blugrass band when i was growing up :)
Yo man. Idk how you take requests but please do any video by mance Lipscomb. Lot of footage on him. Amazing human, and the best dead bass thumb you've ever heard. Nothin but the blues!
Love Billy Strings. His best song is Shady Grove you really need to check that out. Billy Strings was homeless and extremely poor and now just exploding. Thank you for sharing this.
Instrument you're referring to is a mandolin. Billy's style is called flat picking. Check Turmoil and Tinfoil. Heavy metal...War Pigs. I love Red Daisy. Look up the song meaning. ❤
If someone hasn't already said it, the difference between a violin and a fiddle is a violin has strings and fiddle has strangs. There ya go. Now you're all caught up! You're welcome. :-)
Don't think too much, it can only hurt the ball club. He's playing a Mandolin. The difference between a Fiddle and a Vilolin is, you can spill beer on a fiddle.
Scruggs style banjo (finger picks) makes Bluegrass, second most important would be the mandolin, otherwise it could be considered String band, or Old Time music. Of course there a a few more details, but instrument-wise that's the case.
Hey the different between a fiddle and a violin is just whiskey... lol this is a mandolin 💖💫
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FIDDLE AND A VIOLIN YOU ASK? VIOLIN HAS STRINGS, AND A FIDDLE HAS STRANGS!
Violin is looked after, fiddle is 'player condition' or 'reliced'. Plus 1 in 10 fiddles have a leprechaun inside.
Different between a fiddle and a violin is a violin hasn't had a beer or weed spilt on or in it.
No it ain't liar. It's where you're from...
Exactery bwaahaha
“This here is a fiddle..” 😂😂 I lost it
Same
you should check out the version where he’s about 16 on his couch at a home party. incredible to think he wrote it and plays so incredible.
All facts
Do you know the story behind this song?
Green shirt guy 😂
if you think thats good, you should get to a live show ruclips.net/p/PLf01dSlEoasUw3A-c3j4VOAYPmBlYgTif
That was my first introduction to Billie Strings!!! And I still love ❤️ the song!!!
Just a quick note, he wasn't trying to be funny with those lyrics. He wrote it about a good friend who is serving his second term (20 years) for possession of methampethamine.
Both of Billy's parents were hooked on Meth. They've now been clean for over ten years.
Lol a fiddle!!! You have me in tears.. Mandolin my man...
Check out Turmoil and Tinfoil, Meet Me at the Creek, Away from the Mire, and one of his new ones, Wargasm. Really can’t go wrong with this gang.
Great list... maybe throw Summertime with Marcus King on that list too :)
'Meet Me at The Creek' is a great version.
@@KB_-_ Summertime with his pops is pretty good 😌
Billy Strings is absolutely phenomenal. A legend in the making.

This is the heavy metal of blue grass I love this song man it's funny and then watching you laugh made me hit the floor LMMFAO I just HAD TO SUB!!
Billy had a heavy metal sidebar but returned to bluegrass. There is a lot of heavy metal flavor to his writing.
No doubt.
He's playing a mandolin. It is tuned the same as a fiddle/violin, with eight vs four strings. The fiddle/violin (played with a bow) are the same instrument.
Violin has strings
Fiddle has Strangs
It's all in where and what you're playin..also I believe that dude is playin a mandolin
I love bluegrass. Thanks for reaching dude
yep yep.
The Man of Constant sorrow reference caught me, good eye!
I love being introduced to new things. And I love seeing people do the same. That's how we learn, it's what makes life great.
Subbed. For your open mindedness, and infectious honesty.. awesome. And, that's a mandolin, lol.
That beautiful instrument is a mandolin and it’s no easy feat. I first fell in love with it as a small child at a Bluegrass festival.
The difference between a Fiddle and a violin is, you can spill beer on a fiddle. The stick is called a bow. Be cool!!
I'm gonna subscribe for dropping the reference to 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'
New sub here. Loved the genuine reaction.
We gotta get you on some Goose. The energy is unreal
Billy is helping get younger folks interested in bluegrass, and I'm here for it. If you like this, check out some old-school Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and Tony Rice joints.

Great tune. Great message

Thanks for checking Billy out. Another jem id recomend is Billy Joe Shaver Wacko from Waco
Him and his son's duo Shaver was my intro to anything beyond the rock or metal world that caught my ear. Todd Snider wrote "Waco Moon" when he had heard about Eddy's death. RIP to both Father and Son, Eddy def passed way too soon.
My wife and I saw Billy and his mates this past November , WHAT A SHOW ! see him if you can !
It's a mandolin and not a fiddle but what a great reaction!! Your enjoyment is infectious and I need to subscribe!
Blue Grass is played without percussion. That's the defining factor in it. Also that's a maldalin not a fiddle
As a fiddle player, I must agree….A fiddle is always required 😉.
Great reaction to a great song.

“If you’re gonna play texas you gotta have a fiddle in the band” is that the reference you’re talking about? 😂
Check out all of Billy Strings music. He will impress you with every song. “Watch it fall” is my favorite.
Yes I love the video to that one. Love.
Fiddle and mandolin are tuned the same but the fiddle is played with a bow while the mandolin is picked. Violin & Fiddle are the same instrument played in a different style (violins are primarily in orchestras where you only play what's on the sheet and nothing else).

Bluegrass is the heavy metal of country music...
A violin has strings and a fiddle's gawt STRANGS✌ that's the only difference.
You were right about the song reference to The man of constant sorrow. He performed that as well.
Just popping back in to say that Billy Strings will be playing the Grammy's this Saturday April 3rd and is also up for 2 Grammy's, Best album "Renewal" and Performance for "Love and Regret". Thought you might like to know.
Billy Strings writes what he knows about. Damn fine, and fun, music!

This dudes claps are thunderous.
Dude, so many reactions seem fake. Your reaction broke the mold! Love finding genuine reactions. Subbed.
You should go back into his younger days of playing, including with his step father, who taught him how to play. He is pretty much the No ! flat picker there is. Cherryholmes ain't bad
There is a version out there with he and his father playing impromptu in a guitar shop. Absolutely amazing!
If you want a good document on the banjo, watch Bela Fleck throw down your heart! Super informative and very interesting film
What he is playing is a mandaline. The difference between a violin and fiddle is one has strings and the other has strangs.
Jolene you nailed it!!🤠

Would recommend : Watch it Fall or Dealing Despair

Roll the bones by shakey graves the audio tree version. Its dope and would really like your thought on it. Have a blessed day
Damn that's a more technical explanation for the difference between a fiddle and violin. I always heard the difference was whiskey stains and attitude
"Turmoil and Tinfoil"
Billy String's Dad was a picker too, so he learned to platy at his Fathers knee.
My brother i dig this video. Keep em coming big bro i live for this music. Its made me the happiest person since ive found it. On the violin you play the strings on a fiddle you play the the strangs. Lol

Billy Strings-In The Morning Light is awesome!
The Bango came from Africa and a lot of southern people embraced the sound

Hi-Test Hillbilly here... lovin bluegrass ❤
The only difference between a violin and a fiddle is a violinist plays what's written on a page and a fiddler plays what's in his head.
It's called a bow and early ones were arch-shaped and looked like the bow used to shoot arrows.

If you want to play in texas by law you have to have a fiddle in the band
Yeah, that lead guitar is hot, but not for Louisiana Man😂
Unless your PanterA
You play a fiddle with a bow also. But he was playing a mandolin in this video
Yo man. Idk how you take requests but please do any video by mance Lipscomb. Lot of footage on him. Amazing human, and the best dead bass thumb you've ever heard.
Nothin but the blues!

I’m sure others have stated but no fiddles here. It’s a Mandolin.
Try Billy strings watch it fall. Really can't go wrong though, this is one tight outfit.
The difference between a vilion and fiddle is one is played in the south other up north
Violin my mistake
Don't think too much, it can only hurt the ball club. He's playing a Mandolin. The difference between a Fiddle and a Vilolin is, you can spill beer on a fiddle.
Check out Taking Water. Beautiful song with deep lyrics
U should check out Benjamin tod using again ! He sings it like he lived it. I got chill bumbs
