@@tuesdaywithanh The manifesto is also just not very good in general. It's rambling and dated and its only really got a handful of powerful phrases going for it.
As the son of a man that died young because he was overworked, this hits HARD. I mean, I loved my dad, but in my eyes, he was a really sad individual, the kind of person that lived for his work and wasted away all his free time sleeping from sheer exhaustion, never have I seen him have any hobbies besides watching TV, and all the people he seemed to know where from his family or from work. He did so much for me and my mom and I'm really thankful, but I don't care how selfish it may sound, I never want to be like him.
My dad's story was almost the exact same. Some years ago, he got in an accident when coming to pick my brother and me up from after-school daycare simply because he was so exhausted that he fell asleep at the wheel. There was a very real chance then and multiple times afterward that he could've died. All because he did nothing but work himself to the bone-- I don't know a single person in his life that isn't a childhood friend, family, or the odd person from his many jobs. Thankfully, he's retired but disability doesn't exactly offer much. I never want to be like that. I refuse to only fill my life with work, no matter what.
My mom was like this. She worked herself into two massive strokes that left her debilitated and angry at everything (granted she was an angry woman as is). She had to go on disability and essentially lost everything. I hear this song and just feel the rage built up around everything.
As a father and a fellow howling man..he doesn't want that life for you either...but remember he didn't do all that work for Him. It was for you and your mother, and siblings. To give you a life he didn't have. Thats a Dad's Sacrifice and the measure of a MAN....don't forget it.
the line “no man should get more of my time than me” drove me very spitefully through the end of the school year after having sacrificed so much of myself for good grades.
@@victoryiscoolI read this comment shortly after it was made thinking the same thing, and now i find it’s happening slowly and there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m slowly losing the last bit of happiness and control i had over my own life, but then I wonder, did I ever even have it? And then I think… we don’t ever gain freedom, we don’t ever move out of our parents house and “leave the nest.”, we simply are passed on to a higher authority called the government, we are not people. We are not beings with feelings when we are children, nor adults. There is always a higher authority and we will never escape it, we have no choice. I’ve always had a pretty good idea of what this song meant, but it wasn’t until reading the very first annotation in this video that I _truly_ grasped the theme. This song is reminding us that our time is limited, and not to waste it on doing what we’re supposed to. We should spend our time how we _want_ to, not how society or the people we know want us to. As for me, I’d like to spend my time listening to The Crane Wives, singing along with all the other fans in the live chat. To quote someone in the chat during the premiere, “Good music attracts good people.”
Tbh this song also has some low key Marxist themes about time and capital. Especially the “break my chains” bit and talking about not giving someone else what comes from your labor
My dad died in 2020, at the young age of 48, as a direct consequence of being chained to his job, which took a physical toll that he never stopped to try and fix until it was too late. I always have a little eternal flame of rage over this, and every time I hear this song it just explodes.
My "father" is a prison guard. He let his job corrupt him and abused me because of it... this song hits me hard. It's a hard feeling to shake that he was condemned for no reason, and that I was condemned to his abuse. I'm sorry for the tangent, I just had to say it somewhere.
