The whole trip is based around landscape photography and the northern lights (that time of year) and was such a fun trip to have with my wife Haylie travelling through Norway.

This was a really great way to end sharing your adventure. Very useful information, especially the cost data. But just imagine how much money you would have saved if you didn't get ALL those Hot Dogs at Ikea!
Thanks mate. Yeah Im sure people would love to see that cost data considering how much Norway is known to be expensive. Imagine how cheap the holiday would have been if all we ate were those hotdogs!!!!! They were only $1 each!!!!!! :D

This is a really fantastic vlog. Some wonderful tips 👍Have visited Norway 4 times and it really is an amazing country. Travelled twice in the winter and twice early summer. Early June was the most wonderful time to visit in my opinion. Better weather and the glacial water is really gushing so waterfalls look amazing. This vlog makes me want to return ❤️🇳🇴

The driest time of year along the coast of Norway is around the end of May to the end of June. I am from Bergen, and have noticed this pattern many years, and the same seems to be true even for Tromsø, 1200 km away. Most European countries have their summer holidays around July-August, even into September, so I think travelling in June can avoid most of the crowds.

Haylie did mention going to the finnish border. You should check out Pasvikdalen. A valley in Norway south of Kirkenes and between Finland and Russia. There is a small strip of a valley with deep forest, wildlife and a river coming from Lake Enare in Finland. Pasvikdalen is quite an interesting area.
The secret to a great vacation in Norway is to avoid the bad weather. Therefor you can't preplan your route. Go to where ever it is good weather. Norway is beautiful everywhere, so you can't miss.

Nice recap of the trip. I'm really impressed that you can eat for $35/day, wow. That's one meal for me when I'm traveling. Just for protein or booze. Guess it pays to be a veggie! In more than one way.
When you're as young as the two of you, sleeping in the back of small wagon might be 'romantic' now, but once you're in your 50's or 60's you'll really want that 4-star hotel. I speak from experience.

It’s not too bad hey! The trick is to buy raw materials really... plus don’t eat meat! Not only is it cheaper, meat will kill you too 😏
I’m sure there will be a time when we will look back and think “wow, how did we do that?!” But for now we are wondering when we can go back haha

The best month is probably May. Outside the tourist heavy season, but the weather is usually pretty nice and warm. Autumn looks pretty, but is rainy most of the time. And obviously during winter you can barely see anything north of Trondheim, and not much more south of it. It can be nice, but again the weather is a bitch here. On the coast it also changes from one extreme to another all the time, so seeing things can get pretty stressful.
I studied in Bergen at one point but grew up in the east, and one of the big differences is how people react to sunshine. In Bergen it is an occurrence you have to take full advantage of, so the entire community just moves outside to sit in the sun for the five minutes it lasts, and then stampede back inside when it starts raining again, all without even talking about it. Everyone had umbrellas along while sunbathing and everything, so the whole thing was a lot more dynamic than I was used to.
A good wrap-up of your trip. Thanks. I enjoyed your Tasmania and Rickshaw Run as well. Curious about one thing on your Norway trip. Bensin? Is there a back story on that and the decals on Bensin?
Cheers Glen. The Iceland series should be awesome too! Bensin is Norwegian for petrol. And there is a sticker on the console of the car.... it just seemed right to call it bensin 😂
But the experiences... Priceless!! 5000km is a decent effort! Seems like you’ve got a a few reasons to go back too one day. (Haylie, I hope you called your mum back)
Oh yeah man, we know going to Norway we were happy to spend 5-6k... and we came in under budget which was great. Its a place that I am absolutely going to return to as soon as I can. Its not as busy as iceland (yet) so still really enjoyable! I think she did BTW lol
Hi guys. I am from Bergen. Don’t know if you guys have been here. I just found your channel. But it was interesting to see and listen to your experiences. Norway is so expensive that many, if not most, Norwegians don’t have their vacations here. Instead we go to Greece and Spain and places like that. It’s much cheaper. And off course the weather is generally better there.

That is hilarious that its even too expensive for Norwegians to travel haha. Such a beautiful country though, and I dont mind the cost of it too much!
But just these days as the Norway currency, NOK, is weaker to other essential currencies in maybe many decades, an extra nice opportunity for foreign tourists to visit this beautiful country. And i xpect this coming yr 2020, fewer Norwegians than in many yrs, will spend their vacation abroad. For the same reason as mentioned initially in this my reply.

Water? If you drive in the mountain areas, the best water is in the rivers, especially those running from ice or snow. Totally free and so very clean.

haha thanks mate! Yeah it was a semi-rushed trip, but at least we saw a lot to know what we would want to revisit when we return. Thats kind of the way we do things. Like, we have been to Scotland twice now, and on the second time we knew exactly where we wanted to spend our 2 weeks! Cheers for tuning in mate.

Oh for sure Lofoten is an amazing place to visit... and if you’re staying away from the cities and do what we do and cook and sleep in a car it’s quite cheap. The sleeping wasn’t too bad (not as bad as Iceland!) and that was $126 + $34 for food for two people which is very good. Its accommodation and eating out that absolutely kills the budget. We did plan to spend up to $5000 for the two weeks so good that we were under budget (including the $600 to fly there from Thailand)

Great content. Just one question. What car rental company did you use?
Please remember that "pit stop" are not for camping. Trailers really need those to accomedate the rest and sleep hours for their scedule. They need space for their large trucks,its not like they can stop just anywhere. And they have this thight sceduke in their work.
But a van , or larger car , CAN easy find other pits.

Hey. The car in Norway didn’t have road tyre but the car in Iceland did. Much noisier with the road spikes!

Here are some other road trip tips:
1. If your budget allows it, buy and insure a used car, that still has the EU approval in order. You can re-sell the car once the trip has been done, thus giving you back money for it.
2. Get a diesel powered car. Diesel fuel is generally cheaper here, and a diesel model can achieve a far greater range than a petrol version has.
3. Select your route carefully, as you can for the most part avoid the heaviest toll roads if you know where to drive. For example, going on the windy mountain roads in the south instead of the highways, or follow the coastal roads in the north (Route 17 instead of the E6) - Or drive through Sweden if your destination is in the north. This will allow you to skip most, if not all of the toll roads.
4. Plan your fuel stops in advance, and learn the pricing patterns. You can save a lot of money on fuel costs if you fill the tank on a day where the fuel is at the low-end of the price range. Some local actors has firm prices that does not change during the week, but most major gas stations does (Shell, Esso and Circle K). In some instances, the prices can vary by as much as 4-5 NOK ($0.45-0.60)
Fuel is usually the cheapest before noon on Mondays
I recommend flying to Tromsø.

May I ask that if I’m a tourist from Asia planning solo travel to Norway without any debit or credit cards , just cash , would I be able to find some cafe that accept cash and able to ride bus using cash ?

We hired through Sitx. Apparently because we booked from Australia we got a good price. Not sure what that means.... but hey! It was a good price. And we had the Toyota aurius I think.... not a bad size at all

That's one country I would love to visit one day guys,enjoy the rest of your journey,Scotland is my home country and you will love it.Did or were you able to prepay a roadtoll card to display in your vehicle or was it cash transacting constantly at toll booths.I have to say the rules for speeding do seem pretty tough but I do think the jail term is justified for 31 k's over the limit,I think it would cut down on a lot of irresponsible driving,keep living the dream,happy days!
31kms is fast! But I bet that many days in jail doesn’t go as fast! Haha. Yeah the Scottish part of the trip was a great time (our second time there) and we got lucky with some pretty good conditions overall considering the place may as well be at the base of a waterfall! Norway is definitely up there for sure hey. Norway and Iceland were the bomb and I loved every rain soaked minute of the trip. Our number plates were linked to the card and I forgot to cover that in the video but I think that was $200 in tolls for the entire trip.

What are your recommendations for finding out about road closures so I can minimize driving down roads to see them closed. I think I saw you guys used an app, what was it? Also if used did you find google maps was useful in its route choices taking into account road closures?
Hey thanks for the comment. The website is vegvesen.no - it’s not in English but it’s well done and good enough to decipher what’s closed etc in combination with google maps because the roads are all numbered (e.g. c312). Google alone never knew that roads were closed.

Rain is definitely on the menu. Generally, the weather is an issue west of the mountains but not quite so much east of them. If it's rainy in Rogaland you should drive east to Telemark and then up into the forests and hills there. A very beautiful area in autumn with less rain and about a two-three hour drive from Stavanger. Norwegian coastal weather tends to be local and rather extreme. So don't just accept it. Drive away from it instead.

You don't have heated water in Australia? How do you shower, wash your hands, dishes? I thought heated water and heated floors in the bathrooms was normal in all countries :/

Not in public bathrooms, no. its not cold enough in Australia for pipes to freeze so most water is always just cold (in public). I think the heated floors is for pipes that would burst when temperatures freeze etc. We wont complain though, amazing hot water :D
