The only cheap item in norway: free clean tap water
Luctut tut it is actually not that expensive if you already earn Norwegian money but if you come from another country and are used to making less money, then it is mote expensive
...and it's the best water in the world ish!
And diapers!
so that huge box of cornflakes for just 1 eur was not cheap?
Thank you Marie-Jane! I am planning a trip there, and it is great to get the food price comparisons. I love to shop at the local supermarkets when I travel, it is healthy and convenient! and you can save time to do more sightseeing. :) Thank you!! :)
Glad to help! 😊
Norway has alot of ''Coop'' and ''Xtra/Extra'' products which are cheaper alternatives than the regular marketing brands of food products.
That's one thing I discovered staying there a bit longer: the "store version" of the products is unbelievably cheaper than the famous brands. That's how I explained the ridiculous price of those corn flakes for example.
Yep, I am a Norwegian, and the ''Norway is so expensive'' is more of a myth than a fact, when Norwegians go to hollidays in other places in Europe, it's not like buy food, staying in a hotel, or doing daily things on a vacation is so much more expensive than a holliday in Norway would been, it's all about what you make it into.
First price ftw
Bergen is full of tourist-traps... if you know locals you can easily live at an ok budget! Great video :)
Couchsurfing is the way to go!!
Going to travel Norway myself this year, so glad I’ve found this video!! Cheers:)
Great! I hope you're going to have an amazing trip :)
hey! when are you planning to go? This summer I will solo travel through norway too
I'm glad I watched this as I'm going to Norway (Oslo) for the first time in July, it's given me an idea of how much I should budget for during my 3 nights there.
Hey Shaun, I'm glad I could help.
Wow, going Norway in February and was in toronto 3 weeks ago. I'm only 18 but I am travelling with the little money I save up here n there. So glad I found your channel
You rock!! Have a nice trip to Norway 😉
This video is SO informative. Honestly, this helped a LOT. I can’t thank you enough for uploading this. Subscribed 😍 tour videos are so great!
Hey welcome to the channel! I'm so happy to hear I was able to help! Are you also planning to take a trip to Norway?
As someone who live in Norway I'm super impressed by what you managed here.
If you ever decide to give my home city Trondheim a go let me know up front and I'll check out the prices in my area for any product you'd like me to check.
I live near several grocery stores that's fairly near eachother (and therefore compete a bit).
Coop, Bunnpris, Kiwi, Meny and Rema 1000 are all located within walking distance of where I live.
Thanks a lot!
What a good set of advices! Been to Oslo for pleasure and for business, and when for business I do remember how fast you’d get to 60-100€ for a dinner without even having wines or that extravagant things. Brava!
Yep, eating out in Norway is definitely a no for budget travellers.
It's great that you show how to travel on a budget. Some people have a mindset that travelling means spending a lot of money on luxury stuff. I bet there's a lot of people who don't travel at all because they're concerned they might not be able to afford going to a restaurant, with the idea that travelling abroad is for the rich.
Some people's idea of eating cheap on a trip is eating at the famous fast-food shops (McDonalds, etc). I had some friends telling me once previous to a trip I was going to make "oh! In X city you'll end up eating everyday in a McDonald's because restaurants there are expensive". No way they considered other alternatives like buying food at the supermarket or eating at a kebap place. I guess those options weren't up to their standards or what they "were used to".
Some people think that travelling like these is for bums or hippies. For those people it's good that a beautiful young seemingly middle-class woman like you shows them these alternative ways.
Oh so glad to read this comment. You described exactly the people I'd like to help to change the mindset. You perfectly understood the point of my RUclips channel! Very, very happy to hear this. Thank you.
fuertesyrobustos travelling is still expensive(though it largely depends on your country, gender and ethnicity),you pay for flights/trains/buses/visas, and hotels. You are also missing work if you have your own business so yes travelling is definitely expensive.
@@Ilovepineapple The whole purpose of this channel is to show that travelling can be not expensive at all. Infact, travelling can be even less expensive than living in one place. I'm not going to repeat how in this comment cause as I said, every one of the videos I make shows it. Plus, if you're interested, I'm working right now on a serie of videos that address exactly this question: how to afford full time travelling. They'll start to be published at the end of this week.
You did a great job finding reasonable prices. Rema 1000, the grocery store you visited, is probably the cheapest grocery shop in Norway. So, if you do a little research, like you did, it doesn't have to be as experience as some people think.
I'm glad to have a Norwegian's blessing.
Almost every one item at sale in the store has "pr kg price" written in small underneath, so you will see if you save or loose money in the long run
This is wonderful! It gives us hope that we can one day afford to visit Norway! :D
Ahahah sure! That's exactly the purpose of this video actually, I also didn't know if I could afford a trip to Norway but I just took the chance. And then I discovered that it's absolutely not a problem to travel in Norway on a budget. Trust me. :)
I literally had the same laugh that you had when you mentioned that a sandwich cost 10 euros :)
Greetings from Algeria
Eh eh 😅
Well done! That's the right approach to travel as long and wherever you want to 😉👍
I'm going to Norway soon and your videos are a big help! THANK YOU! 💕
I'm so happy to hear!!! It's my pleasure :)
Your video should have been titled: "How to travel in Norway on a budget by eating a prisoner of war diet".
Ahahah! Except those baked rolls I had for lunch, I don't think I ate so bad. I liked every meal or snack I had, even if they were super basic :)

Helpful. Encouraging. A common man can relate.
Nice video, thanks for the tips - very helpful. I'm hoping to visit Tromso early next year so will put some of them into action!
You better will if you want to go home with some money in your pockets 😓
I’m happy I was helpful.
Ma'am, I would love to see you traveling to the Philippines! You never have to worry about the money and the beaches are beautiful (sadly, those beaches I'm referring to are the few ones that are still not touched by pollution, so you have to first research the cleanest, cheapest resort before you come here...) you can also check Trivago for the hotel prices, they'll be really cheap for you and also, food is everywhere... from literally in the streets (you should try our street-foods hahaha) to fancy restaurants... but i advise you try the fast food chain we're known for (Jollibee)
One day I'll visit the Philippines I'm pretty sure. Right now there's such a high trend about going to the Philippines, that I really don't want to encourage it.
You lovely young lady, you shared informative video. I love the way you described. Do moreover again like this nice video.

Useful information for the cheap traveling thank you
Seeing the prices in this video right now brings me back memories 😅 The grocery prices has increased by like 40% since then
Thank you very helpful as going next week to Norway solo budget. I would not couch surf as I think it is too risky, I found a fab hostel 25 euro inc breakfast.
Kiwi is a good chain, the food isn't too pricey (for Norway), and it has a good selection of fruit and vegetables.
As a Norwegian, what I feel what I can get a lot cheaper when travelling to other countries are services, admissions to experiences and food when eating out. In most other European countries I feel like groceries are just a bit cheaper, except sugary stuff and alcohol that's quite heavily taxed in Norway. But stuff like going to the hairdresser, eating out, going to a concert or to an attraction can be a fraction of what I would have to pay for something similar at home.
Oh yes definitely. That's why I always say that for us foreigners to get away with a trip to Norway without going broke the groceries store are essential.
Sandwiches are not on average 10 euros.. More like 5-6 euros. You just need to know where to go :) And we have lots of milk! But as others said, the store version of the product is normally a lot cheaper in Norway. Good video otherwise :)
You have THE BEST milk ever. I don't know why I couldn't find it that time. But it was my first day in Norway, I've had lots of other experiences in Norway since then. I love all your dairies...the butter...mhmmmhm.... 😋
Even if it were for 5 euros, she managed to get food for a whole day for double that amount...
@@viswanathravisrv That is true. I was just pointing out that a sandwich doesn't have to be THAT expensive if you know where to go.
@@WhatashameMaryJane I'm glad you've had a good experience in my country ☺️ I know it can be expensive here, even the Norwegians think that!
Hai mary i am first to your blog its interesting
sam praas Hey Sam, welcome to our community! What interest you the most?
There are 3 brands that are on the more cheeper side : First Price : This is the most cheapest of them all. This brand got the biggest selection in products of the cheaper brands. You will find this brand in KIWI and Spar shops and mayby some others aswell. Rema 1000 do not have this brand, they got their own budget brand called Euro shopper. Here are also a huge selection of products. The last one is called Eldorado. Also found in various food stores. All these brands got products as : Meat, Cerial, fruits, backeries, chocklate soda, vegstables, egg, butter most stuff for the sadwich, Frozen fish, ready dinners . +++. If you do some research on google before you go to norway you can save up to 1/2 to 2/3 on the food budget alone. The most conveniet brand to find is First Price. 230g Steak will cost you about 3 Euro for example, 1,2 kg of fries cost just over a euro and and some sauce were you just att butter, milk and water cost between 1 and 2 euros. A famely can make a steak dinner on a very budget price. :-) (If you have acsess to a kitchen that is..)
Advice for people that want to visit Oslo, buy "Oslo pass". There you will have free public transportation for one or two zones (metro, trains, busses, boats), you can visit more then 50 musseums, you get discounts for restaurants and some shops. It last 24, 48 and 72 hours from the moment of activation. Cheepest way for you to see everything in this city. And buy food at Gronland, stores there are cheapest for some reasone.
Thanks for the advice

I'm born north in norway (Bodo) Here is a few tips
Only buy grocerys from a place called kiwi, they have products named first price (wich is very cheap)
If you staying for a week, buy food for a week not go everyday. It gets expensive
Dont buy from fuel station, they are like really expensive
Do not buy from Joker (As its more like a sunday shop, but increased price)
Make food from scratch as its cheaper(If you do have the stuff or eligible to do it where you are)
Try not to stay at a hotel, but try rent a room or a apartment on that website, i cant remember, but its like a worlwide website were you can rents apartments or houses.
Thanks for the local advices ;) Have you also seen this other video of mine? ruclips.net/video/49HcUaxHyh4/видео.html

@@WhatashameMaryJane Thank you! I think that day will come after 2 years when I graduate. I'm curious how you earn money to travel.
@@JinayShah I saved a lot during my entire life. I've almost never saw any good reason to spend the money that I earned in many different jobs in any way. Until I started travelling non stop last year, so I had saved a lot at that point. Now I'll slowly start looking for other sources of income to earn some more. I'm working on it ;)
@@WhatashameMaryJane Are you into the concept of FI and early retirement?
You chose the most expensive countries in europe haha
Hi Mary Jane amazing smile :) If you never been in Peru you need to go to Amazonas and Machu Picchu. I been one year ago and I loved. P.S: the food is sooo cheap, you are gonna to love. You MUST try ceviche! :))))
Why do you always travel alone ? I feel self-conscious and kinda lonely when travelling alone. How do you overcome that ?
Hey Elia, good question! First of all, because it makes you feel self conscious, travelling alone is a great self esteem exercise! A bit extreme maybe, but very efficient :) You're there alone, far from every friend or relative: you either strengthen up or you sink. Many people who have tried travelling alone have sunk, which mean they went home feeling vaguely depressed about the trip and promised theirselves never travel alone anymore. But if you are able to take courage and deal with being by yourself, your trip will become the best one you've ever had. Second: in my case, Couchsurfing is the answer. The moments when we tend to feel more alone are usually in the evening and in the morning. With Couchsurfing you usually have dinner with your host and he/she will tell you goodnight with a smile before going to bed and good morning in the morning. Those are simple gestures, but I think they make the difference. If you have a strong human contact in the evening and in the morning, then you're probably not going to feel lonely during the day. And when you do, just start to talk with anyone: the guy who serves you food, the one at the info desk at the station, the girl sitting next to you on the bus... Often you'll find a person who you get along with and have a good conversation for half an hour, then you're ready to continue doing your things. Or if you need more company, use Couchsurfing Hangouts! You'll still have company for the whole day but at least you get to know somebody new!
Just dont think about it. The more you think about it the worse it gets. Some people enjoy being alone, some people like the company
Norway is great , but hideously expensive. To save money : book hotels and longer train journeys well in advance , use the seven-eleven stores for food and drink (seven-elevens will quickly become your greatest friends trust me) , also go to chain cafes/eateries in the daytime to eat at the cheaper end of the scale , stay away from restaurants in trendy or touristy areas , avoid drinking alcohol in pubs and bars unless you want to pay over ten pounds/euros for a single drink , avoid tourist trap shops and find bargains in markets if you are near one , use local tram systems to get around , buy city passes if you wish to see a lot of museums , galleries etc . Do these things and your stay in Norway will be no more expensive than a stay in London or Paris for instance . Throw caution to the wind and it will destroy your bank balance .
Wowww!!!! 4 anni fa.... ❤ riuscirò ad andare ora? Partirei da Berlino, e guardando voli per il ritorno da Oslo a Milano vedo prezzi tra 600 e 1700 eurooo 😢

You are pretty lady. You shared a polished video. You have gorgeous way to describe. You lively, lanky and reliable. Goooooo onnnnnn 😘😘😘😘😘😘
Hi Mary I like your videos ❤️ i was wondering if you allowed to use the kitchen in couchsurfing
Hi Hafid! There really are no general rules, every host has his own. I would say 99% of the times they have no problem at all if you use their kitchen. They usually also appreciate cooking together or even if you cook something good for them. To be sure, you just have to ask them. Be just mindful that every one of us has his own weird habits. It could always happen - even if it's rare - that the host doesn't like food smell in his apartment or wants the kitchen to be clean after every meal, or stuff like that. As always, the best thing to do is to have a communicative approach. If you do so, it's extremely difficult to have any sort of problem with the host.
Good research, girl!

Hi there and welcome!
@@WhatashameMaryJane Grazie :)
That market there in Bergen that you showed was the renowned and historic fish market that has been there for a long time. Yes, it might not be the cheapest place but why talk badly about it? Why discourage people from checking it out and buying there? It is a very recommended place. And the quality? Come on, its as good and fresh as it can be!
Hi! I don't discourage people to buy there, I discourage my viewers, who are usually people with very limited budgets and who would like to travel even to places like Norway without having to go bankrupt. If you refer to the very quick comment at the end of the shot you're right, I shouldn't have judged the quality without knowing Norway better. Now, after more than two months of visiting your country, I know that you have always super high quality products, in general. Unfortunately where I come from this is not the case. Infact in Italy the common touristy places usually sell the lowest quality products, especially when it comes to food.
You are not "Cheap" you are "Frugal" the difference is you don't "Pinch Pennies" and do nothing You travel and spend your money "Wisely" not overspending. You still get what you need to do things that you do. Not many people in the US have been to as many States in the US as you have visited Country's. Which give you a unique view of life and people. When I grow up I want to be like you. (I'm really as old as Hell)
Ahah! I've always thought about using the word "frugal" because the Italian "frugale" has a very nice historical and cultural meaning (being content with few things in life). The problem is that in American English I have the impression that it simply means being a cheapskate. Am I wrong?
next time hit up some Italians living in Bergen, I'm sure they will invite you for lunch and will make some good pasta dishes; that is even cheaper :D
My dream destianation is Tromso, even i bought my flight ticket, it was very cheap but i was a student at that time, and i had no money :) i couldn't find any couch and even hostels were so expensive, i was thinking to stay in tent but it was winter, i was afraid. But i hope i will be there in 1 year :)
Build up a good profile on CS and collect references. You’ll see that you’re going to be able to find a host when you’re going to be more prepared next time. Good luck! 🙂
cool
Just made a simple math. If I have an economical wife like her, I can easily effort to have 10 kids.
Hi MaryJane. Love your vids. Can I ask what you do for your work? Enjoy your trip :) x
Hey Suzy, thanks! I'm glad you like them :)
I'm building a personal brand, so I have no income at the moment. Just living on savings. But I still don't want to give up on travelling, that's why I travel so cheap and I hope to inspire other people to do so!
What a shame Mary Jane thanks for the reply. Look forward to watching more. Happy travels x
11.00 bucks for a sandwich it better be the best fucking sandwich from a supermarket I’ve ever tasted!
If I solo travel in Tromso Norway, can I purchase the bus pass for 1 or 2 day ? Would it be good to avoid paying using apps or any digital payments?
