  • Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara continues PSA Hell Month with a comic that might just set itself on fire.

RUMINATIONS: Now here’s one that I should make more reference to! Daredevil vs. Vapora is one of the darker PSAs I’ve ever covered. You’d think there’d be more like this, especially with a segment actually CALLED “PSA Hell,” but most of the time since the assumption is that comics are going into the hands of kids, they need to be watered down a bit, made more child-friendly. The New Teen Titans had some dark moments to be sure, but this one seems downright sadistic at times with how much people’s idiocy causes them to die in horrible accidents.
Vapora, however, is a memorable villain in her own right, despite the mythology around her character not really making any sense. Still, if they had ironed out a few of the bugs, she could have been a legitimate villain, unlike say the Asthma Monster or something.

Actually, Daredevil versus a vaporous enemy seems interesting, given the havoc it could play on his radar sense.

"Gasoline has a pretty distinctive smell."
Fun fact: it actually doesn't. In its normal form, it's odorless. They add something to it to give it that distinctive smell so you can always tell it from other liquids.

I feel like vapora could be a pretty cool villain if she was somehow teamed up with arsonists who use gas. Like maybe she could possess or tempt them somehow. I dunno. If I can't think of a way to pull it off off the top of my head, I'm sure writers would find a way to fuck it up.

I always thought Vapora was kinda interesting because the concept reminded me of an RPG character my mother once created. It was a female demon who literally rode on flames/could transform into flames. Her idea was executed better than the one in this story, lol.

i love how this comic misses one really important fact or just could be that the characters are even more moronic than depicted. Yes gasoline vapor is flammable, but only at extremely high concentrations. I can't recall off hand but i think it's like in the tens of thousand part per million to cause gas vapor combustion. The only way you'd reach that volume is if you have an open canister over a prolonged period in an closed room with almost no ventilation. You'd be dead or delirious from the lack of oxygen before it reaches the combustion concentration.

  • @TPrower

    • @ninamichel1043

TPrower To be fair there are types of paint for heavy machinery that will not come off with water and if you don't have something specially for those types of paints gasoline will do the trick...... dad's a mechanic and i've see him do this before it also takes the paint off some things if you need to repaint them.

    • @AmaranthOriginal
      @AmaranthOriginal 9 лет назад +28

TPrower See, the thing is, it used to be incredibly common. Like, for real. At one point, this made sense as a PSA sort of deal because people needed to be told. People seriously would burn themselves smoking around gas fumes because both were so ubiquitous.
...but this comic was made in 1993, and that's in the ballpark of about 30 years too late. And that's a conservative ballpark.

When truck drivers and construction workers come home with oil stains, it is common knowledge amongst them to use lighter fluid on the stains because that's the only thing that will get them out. I've been using lighter fluid as a spot treatment on oil based stains for years and have never had an issue... WAY different than soaking a load in gasoline, but using flammable fluids as cleaning fluids is something that is still routinely done across the country.

Hell, when I was working on the motorbike I had a whole damn tank of the stuff right there, I just had to open the tap to pour some out into a little container.

for as bad as the comic was, I actually think vapora is an interesting idea for a character. so much so, that I created a redesign of her character/backstory. giving her the mentality of a small child and having her not understand the consequences of her actions, explaining that she's a wind elemental that was accidentally created with gasoline vapors (making her a fire AND wind elemental), dropping the god awfully stupid "don't clean things with gasoline" PSA message, explaining why she wears clothes & how she has a gender, and finally- changing how she got the name "vapora" to something less idiotic (she overheard matt trying to say "vapor" while choking on gas fumes, mistook him for saying "vapora" and thought that was her name).
edit: another way to look at it is: my version of vapora is like nano from tmnt ‘03, but as a wind/fire elemental.

On the subject of kids and babies being attracted to the gasoline cans, to be fair, as someone who's gotten stuck with an infant niece in the past few months, a baby being more interested in things they shouldn't get into than their own toys doesn't sound that ridiculous.

+GamerPony Her design and character COULD actually work, with a little tweaking. If she were an arsonist, for instance, who painted themselves in ashes and was mistaken for a ghost, that could be quite an interesting villain.

I dont read many comics cause I'm not a fan of the vast and confusing DC and marvel universes but I've been marathoning this show from its beginning and well over a hundred videos in this is the weirdest one so far cause I've read this comic.
Dont know when, dont know why. I wasn't even born when it came out. I probably just saw daredevil on the cover and got excited.
All in all a very strange and hilarious trip down memory lane.

Forget if Windex didn't exist in the Marvel universe, what about water? Most of the stuff featured here to clean could be washed down with some soap and hot water. Most guys I know that own Motocycles clean them the same way people wash their cars, dish soap and a hose.
I mean, I know they were kids, but their father could have told them that, which meant it was implied that he taught them to clean it with gasoline....the fuck?

*The following are the musings of a Salty SEAGULL named EARL who just shows up in my posts whenever he feels like it!*
[EARL the Salty SEAGULL:] 3:18 - "You know, I get the feeling Vapora is actually a fan of the tagline ATOP THE FOURTH WALL where BAD COMICS BURN to the point I think she'd probably be happy to see Linkara douse the comic with gasoline and letting it burn! Guess Linkara realized that was the case and decided not to turn the comic into kindling!" 4:40 - "I just love how this part of the comic that points out the blatantly obvious that Gasoline should be used MOTOR FUEL ONLY! Seriously it renders the comic's existence into a mostly pointless PSA!" 12:52 - "I hate to say it but there are people this stupid, as I watched a video about Darwin Award winners which sadly featured a woman who was using gasoline for cleaning and ended up burning to death when she caught fire cause a lit candle fell! So yeah, this comic was likely made with those kinds of incidents in mind! Still the Vapora concept is kinda dumb! Superheroes fighting drug dealers makes sense! Captain America fighting the Ashma Monster, goofy but at least its entertaining! Vapora sounds like a lazy way for the writers to avoid pointing out how dumb it is to use gasoline for cleaning purposes!"

Okay. A few issues or observations I had during this review.
First, with the cover and your "that kid is fine" comment, SHE'S HANGING DIRECTLY OVER DAREDEVIL! Why does that automatically mean the kid should be choking too?
Next, the 20 ft. jump. The difference between you and Daredevil is that Daredevil trained to be an acrobat and could do something like roll at the last minute, thus turning his downward momentum into forward inertia (God, I hope I got that right), while you are an out-of-shape dude like me and have the acrobatic skill of the average platypus; namely, none.
Then on to the whole "Brainless but Aware" thing. The way they describe Vapora kinda reminds me of the Deities in the Persona video game series. In those games, the deities (mostly the villainous forces) are constructs formed by the collective conscious of humanity, representing a single aspect of mankind (the need to destroy oneself and the world around it, escape pain via death, delude oneself from truth, etc.). With one exception, all of these beings have personality, are capable of thought and planning, and orchestrate the schemes in each game. However, they can be considered mindless, as what they do is solely dictated by what they believe mankind's will truly wants, no matter how detrimental it is, and never put any thought to any alternatives until a strong enough will channeling the will of others comes and proves them wrong. In this light, Vapora could be considered to represent mankind's absentmindedness and how it will ultimately cause harm. And don't tell me she can't be sadistic. The very first villain of Persona, Nyarlothotep, was a scheming sadist who loved seeing humanity suffer. Mind you, my thoughts might be giving this comic WAY too much credit.
Hey, wait a minute! The mom and sister came up the stairs to get to the morons. How can they be in a garage? Most garages tend to be at ground level or the lowest floor of a building. And this room doesn't look like it's part of a parking deck. This makes the cleaning of the motorcycle even more idiotic. Also, I'm pretty sure the friend was the one who was supposed to say "Don't sweat it, bit the artist screwed up.
Also, you are wrong about how "sound doesn't work that way." Or did you forget about dog whistles and how their sound is at a frequency humans can't hear? Now, I'll admit to being a very casual fan of Daredevil, and thus don't know if he can hear sounds at frequencies normal humans can't. But even if he can't, that's not what you said, Link.
Finally, I'm surprised you didn't make the obvious joke with 90's Kid. And before you say anything, at this point in the show, he totally would've said something stupid like this:
"DUUUUDE! I just figured out the most metal way to clean stuff. WITH GASOLINE! The only way it could be more awesome is if you shot the gasoline out of GUUUUUUUUNS!"
Then again, maybe you didn't want to portray him as being as stupid as these nimrods in the comic.
Other than all that, great episode for a comic that deserves the burns.
