Because the director is heavily influenced by Chinese opera, and many of the main actors, including Wukong, are stage or opera actors, their expressions and movements also follow the style, which making it very easy to understand just by watching
It seems that Erlangshen in this version of the TV series was not originally an actor, but actually a military instructor. The director of this TV series searched for actors nationwide and felt that his demeanor was very suitable, so he was chosen to play the role.

@@redgraves4030you're right. I can't remember exactly but in the original novel the fight went extremely hard for many rounds. Erlang Shen then managed to dominate Sun Wukong, forcing him to use his spells to shapeshift and run away, which is correctly shown in this episode.
@@An-zn8ri In the original work, Erlang Shen and Wukong fought without a winner. Later, Erlang Shen and his six brothers also joined the battle, but they did not defeat Sun Wukong. Later, the Heavenly Lord (one of the founders of Taoism) attacked Sun Wukong with his weapon, the Diamond Bracelet (a very powerful weapon), and Erlang Shen finally captured him.
@@chentom9232 This is the most accurate retelling based on what I remember from the novel. The two fought mostly to a standstill, and the two are of comparable power. There were many points where Erlang had the advantage, and Wukong was often on the defensive, but that fact alone does not guarantee that Wukong is the weaker of the two. Wukong's style often relies heavily on trickery and evasion, and being on the defensive might have been entirely his preferred fighting style, rather than a sign of weakness. Also, his personal preference for fighting dishonorably also does not imply inability to win with raw brute force either: it's mostly just a direct consequence of his monkey playfulness. This mischievous and evasive yet simultaneously brash and overly aggressive style also acts as a literary metaphor for the capricious nature of the human heart since many common interpretations of the book see Wukong is the symbol of SanZang's (Tang Monk Tripitaka) heart. In the book, the two fought day and night with neither being able to successfully subdue the other. Wukong often relied on trickery to run away from and play mind games on Erlang, but was always foiled by Erlang's magical third eye which can see through illusions. (Again, Wukong was not hiding from Erlang because he was losing, he just loves to play mindgames on people he fights). Wukong never worried for a moment in the entire fight, and saw the whole thing as a big game, and some of his more ridiculous transformations were clearly just fucking with Erlang rather than any desperate attempt to regain control of a losing fight. Later it was only with the ambush of LaoZi and his magical net thing did Wukong get temporarily captured (technically he never really even lost the fight) and sent boiling in a magical heavenly cauldron for execution... only to not only survive the ordeal but pop out more powerful than ever and gaining a version of Erlang's power of being able to see the true forms of gods, yaos, guais, and illusions alike with his new golden eyes. (Though it came at the cost of being extra sensitive to sand and stuff) All in all, the two characters of Erlang Shen and Wukong are both shown to be the two most powerful warriors in the world of Journey to the West. (The buddhas and boddhisattvas are excluded from being counted as "even more powerful" because Buddhist style enlightenment allows one to completely escape material concepts of power and strength and are on a category of their own). It is not entirely clear who is the better fighter, and it is unlikely that an answer can ever be discovered, especially considering Erlang Shen is an immortal deity and Wukong acquired so many layers of immortality that even he lost count. So it's impossible for either to truly defeat the other, the fight would go on literally forever, with them resting to take a break once in a while lmao. (Although some forms of immortality were more the therevada buddhist style of immortality where the body can still be destroyed, but you have escaped samsara and your soul may persist its memories and live on as some type of post enlightened being such as an Arhat or Bodhisattva, both Erlang and Wukong also seem to possess the physical invincibility type of immortality as well, with the only way for their bodies to die is if they themselves wills it so. *Relevant to Wukong Black Myth*) Though throughout the novel Wukong does acknowledge numerous times that Erlang did indeed best him. However, I think these examples point to either simply making a pragmatic statement on the fact that Wukong did at least successfully get captured temporarily (despite requiring Laozi's ambush), or as a way to demonstrate Wukong's slow journey towards enlightenment and letting go of earthly egotistical desires. He has slowly moved past worrying about who is the better fighter and is willing to let Erlang take the W because Wukong is slowly living up to his namesake and "Awakening to Emptiness". I'd say, realistically the two divine warriors are probably completely evenly matched overall, but each has certain domains where they excel over the other: Erlang has one more transformation than Wukong, and and is more disciplined in his fighting style (in contrast to Wukong's often brash leerooyyy jennnkinnns style of starting fights), and likely have better command of martial arts / fighting techniques due to his long history of fighting for the Celestial Court. His half divine heritage probably also helps provide a massive power boost to his abilities. Wukong on the other hand has an immense and unbreakable will power, makes up for discipline with sheer power, an advantage in agility and evasiveness, replaces Erlang's advantage in tactical expertise with devious mindgames and effective psychological warfare. As a Stone Monkey that has cultivated for countless eons, who turned into a Monkey Yao who have completed the entirety of Daoist learning / cultivation, and who wields a staff that weighs as much as mountains, Wukong's own sheer strength can easily match up with Erlang's divine inherited powers, so this one would be a tie between them. Though, by the end of the Journey of the West, the rivalry between the two ends up with a clear winner. By reaching full enlightenment and attaining buddhahood, Wukong escapes from the cycle of samsara, and also transcends above earthly conceptions of power and limitations. How could Erlang ever hope to beat Wukong now, if he wouldn't even be able to escape from Wukong's palms. ;)
Basically two strongest warrior god from daoism and Buddhism religion. Scared divinity of the daoist Pantheon and victoris fighting Buddha from Buddhism Pantheon.
Wukong and Xiaotian (Dog, in some versions he can shapeshift into a human) were supposed to be fighting fiercely in the story, but since it's an actual dog, they were just fooling around on camera so they don't harm it XD
Erlang was not defeated, he was outsmarted by Wukong. Basically Wukong can transformed into 72 animals. Erlang can also transformed into 72 animals, but he has a pet dog which represents the 73rd animal.
Between the two, Erlang was the stronger of the two and is generally more experienced of the fighters, but Wukong is more creative with his usage of the powers of the 72 transformations (not animals). That's why he spent most of their battle on the run; he can't take Erlang in a straight fight, but he can easily keep him on the ropes indefinitely. The difference is that Erlang's intervention gave heaven the opening that was needed to catch him by surprise.

@@christopherbravo1813 Erlang Shen has laser eyes. This is actually understood in this way. His father is a human, his mother is a god, and of course he also becomes a god, so when he becomes giant, he is also a human god. The game maker was too eager to release the work, and turned a blue lion into a giant, which is wrong. That blue lion is a demon in the last few chapters of Journey to the West, not the real Erlang Shen. Erlang Shen is much more powerful than that blue lion. Here, Chinese players have been criticizing this issue
This is the 1986 version of Journey to the West and the original author was Ngo Thua An in China. This is an old movie and at that time the effects were very good. If you're not Asian, you won't understand.
This one is weird and ran later than the the original 'Monkey' TV series from 1978-1980. It was so popular in Australia as well. Kids used to run home from primary school to get home in time to listen to the intro song. "Monkey Magic la la la la" and his pink cloud. ruclips.net/video/J-SUoHmpRdM/видео.html
This should be one of the several Chinese big drama productions since the opening of China reform in 1978. The preparations for this drama took quite a while before production started in early 1980’s. It was officially shown in 1986.The methods of production are quite crude as they just come back from 2 decades of mad revolution and experimentation.

The game maker was too eager to release the work, and turned a blue lion into a giant, which is wrong. That blue lion is a demon in the last few chapters of Journey to the West, not the real Erlang Shen. Erlang Shen is much more powerful than that blue lion.
Here, Chinese players have been criticizing this issue

shen means god so you don't need to say god Erlang Shen. you only need to say god Erlang or Erlang Shen.
Trippy and absurd
WTF????
This is the 1986 version of Journey to the West. A long time ago, when you were not yet born =)) lol you
I think you're really just an 11 year old kid watching a skibidi toilet
This is the 1986 version of Journey to the West and the original author was Ngo Thua An in China. This is an old movie and at that time the effects were very good. If you're not Asian, you won't understand.

This one is weird and ran later than the the original 'Monkey' TV series from 1978-1980. It was so popular in Australia as well. Kids used to run home from primary school to get home in time to listen to the intro song. "Monkey Magic la la la la" and his pink cloud.

This should be one of the several Chinese big drama productions since the opening of China reform in 1978. The preparations for this drama took quite a while before production started in early 1980’s. It was officially shown in 1986.The methods of production are quite crude as they just come back from 2 decades of mad revolution and experimentation.
