    In fourth generation form, Nissan's Qashqai remains the definitive, volume brand mid-sized family SUV for up to seven folk, thinks Jonathan Crouch
    Ten Second Review
    Nissan's fourth generation X-Trail evolves into a more polished contender in the segment for family-sized SUVs offering up to seven seats. The cabin is nicer, the looks are sharper and you can have efficient e-POWER semi-electric petrol propulsion beneath the bonnet. Time to take this contender more seriously.
    Background
    Lots of brands claim to offer the world's best selling SUV and Nissan is one of them, the brand's X-Trail angling for that title and now in its fourth generation. If you include the US market (where this car is badged as the 'Rogue'), over three-quarters of a million X-Trails are currently being sold globally every year. An awful lot of family buyers, it seems, like the idea of a mid-sized Qashqai-class crossover, but need one with a little more space and the option of a third seating row.
    Seven-seat functionality hasn't always been an X-Trail trait. Earlier first and second generation versions in this model line (launched respectively in 2000 and 2007) didn't offer it, but sales took off when the third generation 'T32'-series version was introduced in 2013 with three seating rows. That model was updated in 2017 and it kick started demand for mid-sized SUVs that could seat seven. Rival SUVs like Peugeot's 5008 and three VW Group designs, the Skoda Kodiaq, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and the SEAT Tarraco, quickly provided attractive class alternatives. Hence the need for this fifth generation 'T33'-series X-Trail, announced early in 2021, but not on sale here until Autumn 2022.

    Now built in Japan. I'll take that for quality every time. That's a significant selling point.

    Absolutely thrilled with our Nissan X-Trail! 🚗 Managed an impressive 678 miles on a single tank of fuel (55 litres) using the 2WD ePower. Super comfy, great tech - couldn't be happier!

      The E:Power is quite nippy with its sub 7 sec 0-100km/h in Sport mode - impressive for such a big heavy vehicle.
      The very top spec twin motor AWD E:Power with Nappa, Bose, glass roof, 20” wheels etc is only $AUD63K including all taxes and delivery charges or about £32,500. Jeez you get ripped off on cheapish Japanese cars.

      My 2.5 L Naturally Aspirated Ti-L (Range topper AWD) does around 700 km per full tank of fuel. Not too bad for Naturally Aspirated AWD then.

    Maybe you miss the big E Force EV like driving experience including One Pedal driving.
    My brother took delivery of an X Trail E Force TI in Sydney.
    An exceptional package. So quiet & responsive and well finished.
    Decided the 4WD was better value than an equivalent 2WD Qashqai.

    I can't see Outlander in EU websites and I really want it. Going to get the XTRAIL. Videos are 1 year old now and they never launched it here.

    I received delivery of my Tekna plus e4orce in September, I specified the light tan leather interior with the pearlescent white paint and it looks fabulous. Having bought new Mercedes previous two vehicles I thought it would feel more downmarket but it actually doesn`t. It is filled with tech, very comfortable and a decent drive also having better fuel economy than my old (2018) diesel Mercs. The main reason though I chose the Nissan rather than replacing with another Mercedes was the almost £30 000 saving!

    Why the heck does the E:Power have a 3 cyl 1.5T to perform as a generator? Wouldn’t a 2.0-2.5L n/a Atkinson engine be the go, to run most efficiently at constant revs to charge the battery. What the hell does the turbo do when not tied to accelerator position/vehicle power need? Would rather have a long life low stress Atkinson than a doubtful poorly balanced boosted 1.5T 3 cyl!

    • @stewiemac4017
      @stewiemac4017 4 месяца назад

      In truth, a small rotary engine, as used in military drones, would be the ideal generator. But this isn't Mazda.

    • @andrewcherry3330
      @andrewcherry3330 4 месяца назад +1

      You are right - 2.5 na would last much longer due to lowest rpm and power/liter

    • @Bagnerdpak
      @Bagnerdpak Месяц назад

      the 1.5 litres turbo is an Atkinson engine from what Nissan described. The variable compression ratio engine technology needs turbo to achieve higher efficiency. Also 3 cylinder engine is much smaller package and has lower centre of mass, so that the engine can be placed back further from the front axle to achieve a better weight distribution.

    Why the bigger motor on front not rear to reduce understeer?
    Also they can use a 2L desil engine to drive the generator.

      @@Grumpycycling65 frustrating that you’re without your car for 6 weeks and no doubt the dealership is scratching their heads as to how to get out of this as cheaply as possible. Good on you for digging your heals in and accepting nothing less than a replacement. From what i have read, the e power system has been in Japanese market for about 8 years so perhaps your issue is a first as surely those 8 years would have uncovered some problems and fixes if it was design related?
