Paying for things in China 2024 (WeChat, Alipay, Cash)

  • Payments work a little differently in China. Super impressive actually but you need to setup the right apps ahead of time to be able to use your foreign credit cards through them.
    WeChat and Alipay - definitely download both of these ahead of your trip and link one or more credit cards to your account. But still bring cash as a backup, just in case!

    Does Beijing have a 7-day metro ticket? That card with the refills is a bit confusing.

    I'll visit Shanghai for a week at the end of the month, so this is really helpful! Do you happen to know which one does collect less personal data from me? My gut has a big grudge against weChat.

      Yay glad to hear! Hmm I think they’re both about the same tbh…WeChat is maybe integrated with more apps so I have the same read as you if I had to pick one. But there are places where we had trouble getting AliPay to work :/

    It's possible used Revolut card in this app for pay??

      Hm I’m not familiar with the Revolut card but if it’s a standard Visa or Mastercard it should work
