When you are making notches in the wood it is important that you don't make them so deep to compromises the integrity of the timber. Use what's called a half lap joint, half the depth on each of the timbers and that will create a "flush" joint (make sure to use some wood glue). Second when you are notching out notches and want to clean up the notch and don't have a chisel, you can take you skill saw , manually pull back the safety guard on the blade, place the blade in the notch, start the saw and move it sideways side to side going length ways along the notch and the blade will cut off all the high points. if you do this you must use caution and maintain a "positive "grip on the saw and keep your fingers away from the moving blade. Or you can take your rock chisel and sharpen it with your angle grinder. Second you put enough lag bolts and brackets on the floor to hold the Titanic. You need to think through what you are doing. There is no downward pressure on the brackets, only horizontal , lateral potential movement, no matter how much weight you put on the bracket it will NEVER move up or down, so 3 inch lag bolts are REALLY overdoing it. Save yourself a lot of effort , buy a box of 2 in concrete screws, use one bracket on the inside of the timber so you don't stub your toes or create a tripping hazard and secure it to the floor with the 2 inch concrete screws directly into the concrete ( a concrete bit should come with the package of concrete screws, if not buy one). Then use 3, 2 1/2 inch lag bolts to secure it to the wood and it will never move without a sledge hammer. Or you could purchase a saddle bracket, which is like a square u bracket with a piece of rebar welded to the bottom, drill a hole in the floor, drop the rebar in the hole and then secure the timber with 21/2 inch wood screws. Google saddle brackets) . You could have saved some floor space by angling your support posts on the floor where it meets the bottom of the wall ( 45 degree angle) then notching out the horizontal timbers and so the angled support post will not be able to slip, then secure them with lag bolts. Then you still have all of your usable floor space.
    Regards
    And good luck
    Wayne

I love watching your videos, a little escape from the world, please don't take this the wrong way as trying to be positive and save you work in the long run, why not start with two big beams one bolted to the end wall and another going from front wall to back wall, about 8ft off the end wall, then fill in with joists between the two.. no need for posts, and a good solid base to start from.. i know due to the roof angle most of it will be unusable for people but can build storage cupboard either end leaving a space for a bed in the middle.. this is not meant to burst your bubble, but constructive advice.. keep it up and keep going, i love what your doing..

Laura and Dan hello my sweet friends! Loved the video and the mezzanine build. The sound of rain on a roof puts me to sleep. It is very relaxing. I enjoyed the view of the rain from inside your home looking out through the windows. You were safe, cozy, and dry inside your home. What a blessing! The Noah's Ark reference was so cute. God bless you, much love, and love in Christ! ~John
Matthew 7:25 NKJV "... and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock." ♥🙏

You two are terrific in the way you learn on the job, but then usually come up with the right solution in the end.
I would just add that in this case, your mezzanine posts only need one bracket at the floor level, not four. The posts are under compressional weight load from above and won't easily move - so one bracket hidden at the back would do, to hold each post in place. Just make sure the posts are vertical, once the platform is in situ.

A good set of chisels is a very worth while investment and makes joinery much easier. You can also use the circular saw itself to do a lot of the work after you've removed the "slices", by simply moving it side-to-side within the notch. Just keep it at the original depth and it will leave a surprisingly smooth surface behind.

Hi Dan and Laura, I hope you are both well? That mezzanine is going to look really great and right up your street, you could have used a flat screwdriver as a chisel it what I used years ago but nothing beats using a good and really sharp chisel to clean out a joint like yours getting a curling shave of wood is a lovely feeling. Same goes for when you cut a joint and fit the two bits of wood together and they are a perfect match and fit snugly together ❤ love it. Anyway I look forward to you finishing the mezzanine next week. Thanks for the update and hope you are hard it. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Brilliant to watch you both, learning and improving. When I converted my derelict barn, I did lots of the "Big" carpentry myself. I used 4x2 or 4x4 when a chippy would have used 2x1 or 2x2. Still looked good and like you, i did it myself. Just love to see you working and enjoying it together. Bet like wifey and i, you have a few spats of screen though. Ha Ha.

Full credit to both of you for getting stuck in and learning as you go.
I might suggest that when you cut those long beams on the mitre saw, you should support the far end of the beam. Put a block under the far end that's the same height as the deck of the saw. The beams should be parallel to the saw deck for their whole length, not angled down to the ground. That way the blade will be perpendicular (at 90 degrees) to the beam. It's safer since the wood is fully supported by the deck while cutting, and you'll get the cut angles that you're actually expecting.
    Chin up! You're getting places.

Love the sound of all that rain. We don’t get much rain where I live, and it's been really hot for about two weeks now, more than usual. I noticed that the barn stayed nice and dry. A lot of complex measuring going on there, if you get it perfect or close then you deserve the title of carpenters.

I thought it was hot in Portugal this time of year??? You can clean out the mortises by sliding the circular saw side to side so the lowest part of the blade crosses over the high spots. Not quite as clean as a sharp wood chisel would do but a lot easier than what you did. Seems like you need a hex socket for the drill to drive all those screws. Can't wait to see it installed :).

Sometime it’s just smarter to bite the bullet and buy what you need.I do think a set of chisels from Amazon would put you way ahead for this and future projects. Some are not the best steel but they would last through the barn transformation. Who knows, maybe one of your subscribers or viewers would donate an old not being used chisel or two to help you out? You will need to know how to sharpen them. Laura you are sooooooo good to dive in and do what you can to build this mezzanine. I just wish you would make it bigger. I love watching your videos. I look forward to them always. Having said that I feel kinda bad in saying this but wood should never touch concrete unless it's treated wood. If the wooden post y'all are using are treated then please disregard, if not you may want to raise them a bit.

    Hi again L&D
Making good progress guys! What a charming place it will be.
Wondering if a workbench would be of great help for some of the projects that would help your backs and get you up off the floor. A couple of sawhorses with a board top could be quickly made and would be easier for you then the floor.
Excited for you with every step you finish and looking forward as you keep on keeping on.
    Stay safe. Catcha next week...

Concrete chisels are for concrete and wood chisels are for wood. But so you learn. Best of luck!

All them bits of wood you chiseled out reminded me I did not buy tubs of Ice Cream this week, so only left with two litres of Tiramisu to feed both Celia and me. Otherwise you two seem to be cracking on like Irish navvies.
