    Those Canadian government grain cars were my favorite all time car and I agree all you said on this stuff about those grain cars, I use to love grain trains but now grains trains are one of the most boring freight trains to catch when railfanning + its hard to even tell if it's a potash or grain train these days..., my favorite Canadian grain car is the Red painted Canada grain car, second favorite is the Brown painted with lime green or yellow at the ends wheat car, I miss seeing those grain cars..., when i was a little boy when I seen grain trains I got excited and watched the hole thing, I actually think my first ever train I seen on my life as I remember was a grain train, this year I actually caught a CP grain train with 54 red canada grain cars, 43 blue Alberta grain cars, 6 brown Saskatchewan grain cars, and 10 brown with yellow or lime green wheat cars and i think all filled with grain going to Ontario probably for the last time in used, and just a week ago I also caught a CN grain train with all Canadian government grain cars going in to the main CN yards! 2 pretty rare trains to catch out there these days, hopefully catch a few more of those before they are gone forever..., Rust In Peace Colorful Canadian Government Grain Cars.
    Great Video man! Thanks for uploading it, I was wondering what actually happened to those grain cars and why i don't see them any more, let's just hope we all as railfans get to catch a few more Canadian colorful grain cars before they are gone for good.

    I have fond memories of these cars. The new ones are boring to look at. The old government cars looked great in photos coming around curves. I have lots of photos from the 80s of these grain cars and the 40-foot boxes, too.

    I love the paint schemes on these colorful Canadian hopper cars. Had no idea they were phased out already. Hated to see these cars defaced by vandals in later years of use. I like the colors on that other cylindrical hopper, too, that's used for chemicals, I believe. The one that looks like a roll of fruit flavored Life Savers.

    I wasn’t even aware an Alberta Cyndie was preserved! Let alone cosmetically restored! Those are my favorite out of all of them. I own Castle Island (ALNX 396087) in HO Scale. Working on getting a Coke Can and one of the Brown “Root Beer Cans” on the layout too.

    Grain cars, Here’s more history for you, I know a lot of history, If you know it already but CN was late on the party of grain hoppers, They haven’t gotten grain hoppers until the 80s, CN still had to use the old method of grain in box cars until the 1980a.

    I'm from Winnipeg too and i spend alot of time in the dauphin area and i remember when i was a kid not to long ago all i would see is these beautiful gov hoppers led by Cowl units and EMDs alike and its sad now a days all it is is GEVOS and boring cars for me its makes me not want to take the time out of my day to watch trains anymore because 9 times out of 10 its a GEVO running the show.
    miss the days when it was a lash up of cowl units running a colorful grain train through dauphin. now they are all Unit grain trains headed for the race tracks.
    i mean atleast the likes of Cando and a few other short lines are keeping older units alive like the GMD-1 1010 that actually used to operate the winnipegosis sub back in the day wish i was alive to see that haha.
    and dont get me started how sad it, is that most of the branch lines are now gone....

    • @TheWinnipegRailfan
      @TheWinnipegRailfan  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah same, It's crazy how fast the rail industry changes, we had some cool branchlines too! I wish I had gotten trackside more as a kid, I saw the tail end of all the cool locomotives and cars before they were replaced with GEVOs, lol

    • @trainboss12
      @trainboss12 10 месяцев назад

      @TheWinnipegRailfan we must be around the same age then haha, yeah when I was 13 around 2010 me and my dad would go to Diamond to watch trains highball out of winnipeg and I sware every second unit was a cowl lol
      Also I worked for CN for a few years as a signal maintainer and when I was working there, there were talks that they are going to eventually CTC the Letellier and Gladstone sub since they are planning on running a bunch more trains a day down those line but that was back in 2021 when I heard that. I think letellier is in a better position for CTC since it's already CWRd.

    Last time I looked, still a few Canada brown hoppers rolling around on the old Toledo Peoria and Western Railroad from Effner Indiana to Peoria, Illinois. (Never went to Toledo, and everything west of Peoria was sold to the Keokuk Junction) . Still 70's style railroading going on that line.

    Though not talked about often, Manitoba also had its own cars, albeit I think they opted to leasing the more dull flat type. However while only sporting a provincial crest, they were painted in a snazzy yellow ocher colour with black ends. I often think if they had gone with the cylindrical cars and full-on paint scheme, they might have combined the yellow and black of the leased cars, the style of the Alberta/Saskatchewan cars, and the Stylized Buffalo of the Manitoba grain "Buffalo Box cars" logo (enlarged tastefully of course). Would love to see a model train company see such a 'fantasy paint scheme' to fruition.

    Also, I remember last year seeing an ass-load of the Alberta grain cars (albeit faded and covered in graffiti) at a grain terminal somewhere in my home province of Saskatchewan near Regina. It was during my trip to South Dakota.

      Ps. I know I’m giving you a lot of train videos suggestions and among other things because I am kind of interested on what you’re doing with the transit bus series and obviously the stuff we do for Content series I personally think you should do an update video every other month to let people know what you’ve been doing with the videos and series and future videos especially the 10 year anniversary. I’ve been waiting for 84 years lol
