  • Short video on how British Standard mortice locks work and the options open to locksmiths in opening them. (Disclaimer: please note this is not a definitive guide in how to open mortice locks and we will take no responsibility if damage is done to doors/locks as a result of watching this video. The opening of mortice locks without a key requires knowledge and experience). **Correction during the video I say cut the stump off it should be cut the bolt off.**

That's a lot of good info there Derek. I have been asked by a few people about drilling lever locks and they haven't understood that not all locks drill in the same place. You've explained it really well.

Derek i had my first mortise job a few weeks ago i got the client to take a picture of the key hole and the warding of the keyhole was like a 3 level mounted right side internal door sash lock first of all straight to try out keys so 15 of them they were very tight and no joy i thought what's happening here anyway i got out the 12 piece wire set from souber just case then ended up having to prize his facing of the wall as delicate as i could inward opening door and same with the door standard out with the grinder the client told me after to leave the lock in place he was happy enough he got access to the room he wanted and paid the most important thing when i went home i reflected on it and it must have been a 2 lever lock that's why try out keys never worked now I've got the 2 lever try out keys but i got a 5 and 7 gauge 2 in 1 picks never really used them before and I've got a pile of old mortise locks to practice with i get from a guy that installs doors now I've managed to pick right side mounted 3 level locks using the 2 in 1 for non curtained locks what a nightmare it was though in the guys nice sandstone detached house all natural wood everywhere as well in Glasgow there are loads of mortise locks and yes it will take me years to really master that very difficult good vid cheers pal
