The Quest For The Queen Of Spain's Priceless Jewels, Robert F Marx

Seeking the treasure lost in 1715

Years ago, underwater archaeologists lived by the motto "finders keepers"
when they struck gold. Today is a different story, but that doesn't
    stop them from searching.
Sir Robert Marx, of Indialantic, is one such underwater archaeologist -
dare not call him a treasure hunter - who enjoys sharing tales of
the deep ocean blue and the world's rich maritime history.
The author of 64 books will talk about the 1715 shipwreck off Sebastian
Inlet and its impact next week at Florida Tech.
"The 300th year anniversary is coming up for the loss of that wreck and the
whole fleet," he said. "I want to make sure people know about it."
That wreck has been the subject of numerous books, articles,
documentaries and blogs. Capitan-General Don Juan Esteban de
Ubilla and his flagship, the Capitana, contained quite the cargo:
more than 3.5 million pesos in priceless treasure, specifically, the
queen of Spain's jewels. En route from Havana, Cuba, to Spain,
12 ships sank and their crew perished during a hurricane on July
    30.
During his lifetime, Marx has found bountiful treasures, but this one has
    remained maddeningly elusive.
"We know where the wreck is, but these things are complicated," he
explained recently as he reclined in his office chair in the home
he shares with wife, Jenifer, a philanthropist, diving expert and
author. Priceless artifacts line their bookshelves and fireplace
mantles. There's little room for even a coaster on the coffee
tables and side tables, for they're occupied by thousands-year-old
    jade pieces or fine china.
Among his best finds? An 80-pound gold helmet that Marx said belonged to
    Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama.
Marx gives a brief lesson about maritime history and the lure of the sea. "A
lot of information we can't find just by diving," he said. "But we're
in it for knowledge, not to get rich."
Many of Marx's findings are housed in museums all over the world.
But no matter what coveted artifacts he brings up, nothing compares to the
biggest treasure he's ever found, he said: "I'm married to her."

Treasure Coast, Sebastian Inlet is nasty. Ive witnessed 2 boats sink during tide changes. Hulls up only to be run over by bigger boats coming or leaving. Good surfing and fishing there.

My late father was in the U.S. Navy stationed in the Dry Tortuga Islands. There was a launch harbor at the southern edge of the island where the depth was only 12 ft. They used to motor over this stretch to/from the base. It was reported that a treasure ship was discovered there in the mid-1970's and these sailors never knew anything about it.

As an Archaeologist I support the treasure Hunters. They do better archaeology than academia, and a lot more of it. They operate on a capitalist model; the work must pay. They have the most fun! Archaeology for hire comes along late, tries to take charge, never mind that Salvage Law and Mining Law both predate Antiquities' Law. They slow everything to a crawl, steal other peoples hard work. The State of Florida has broken it's public trust: Florida makes a fortune advertising the treasure coast, and doesn't even let the tourist keep the artifact. A GPS point and a photo is all that the state should be entitled to. After all, they're claim is to historic preservation, they have no financial claim.

I'm in area of Florida where the local archaeologists have laid claim to finding the site of a major settlement when in fact they haven't produced sufficient evidence to back their claim. Their self assured demeanor is frankly nauseating and they regard themselves as the absolute authority on all matters regarding this settlement. I've talked with others who have told me that they make their claims in order to receive funding from the state to continue their errant excavations. It galls me that they use the name "treasure hunter" as a derogatory term for anyone not associated with some institution regardless of their expertise in finding and identifying historic artifacts...

Sorry no proof of "moor" people in America prior to Columbus's arrival. Zero. The Natives were thought to be from an ancient Chinese culture that made it to the America's. Africans as we all know we're brought here as captives and forced into slavery. Which created the carribean. Taino,African,Portuguese,Spanish,French,English etc are all now called Mestizo.

The king had troops forced slaves to mine the jewels, and precious metals. And had his jewelry makers make them.. then they were lost at sea, twice , some a third time.

Ummm, did you not watch the video? They procured from highend sources all over the world! All so she would consummate
(put out) to give the King an aire to the Kingship!
Not that you’re educated, the Kings Mercenaries stole the jewels several times! Still, Ole’ King’y, never got laid! He died w/ a severe case of
      Blue-Nadds!
However, if I were King, I would be sampling the Herd before making one my Queen!
      Most likely, I’d have :
      Queen Sunday
      Queen Monday
      Queen Tuesday
So on and so forth, my thoughts are, some is good. More is GREAT! Variety, is what
      My Kingship would entail!
The larger the (,)-(,) the better chance of the queenship!
      Ok, ok, yes, I’m a pos! I know! 😇
