    My grandma taught me a trick with the peanut butter 50 years ago. She would spoon a few smaller jars into a pot and melt it, then stir in a bunch of bird seed and sunflower seeds then pour all of that into a old coffee can that was split open in halves and little wooden rails that covered the sharp edges for the birds to perch. She left it out in winter for the "critters" as she called them. It was a big hit of course.

    • @wayne00k
      @wayne00k 2 месяца назад +11

      I do similar. I make a mix of songbird feed with unsweetened peanut butter and shovel it into two small cat food tins stacked one over the other. beneath is an old aluminum gutter nail tapped into the trunk to serve as a perch... this gives the birds a better chance before they are cleaned out by the squirrels and such.
      Important note is it is best to use unsweetened peanut butter because many brands use synthetic sugars that can make many critters quite ill.

      @@twiga57 A full jar like shown, probably just a few days by themselves. Of course, other animals and insects would also be interested, including field rats (always getting into my bird feeders), birds and yellow jackets (annoying little devils). I once had a medium size field rat killed in a snap trap, which became lodged behind some shelving. It took me two days to move things to get to the trap and by that time, the fire ants had been busy, consuming everything except tufts of fur and bones.

Calm down and enjoy. Fwiw, people have been making feeders as long as they have been generating kitchen waste and the critters use just about all of it. They sure were! Allowing each of their friends get a chance! The trail camera has infrared video so it is able to lighten the video at night without having a light or flash! Put some type of wooden perch or small platform just underneath it and that would help more animals access it. It was surprising to me how many couldn't get into it--they just slipped off. Glad the marten enjoyed it though!

    Does the trail camera make any kind of noise (low hum or such)? Or is it just a new thing to them. So many of the animals seem to zero right in on it.

    • @TheOutdoorTheater
      @TheOutdoorTheater  8 дней назад

      Great question and great observation! So from what we noticed the camera makes a very subtle and quiet click sound. Now "quiet" is to human ears but to animals it is probably easier heard, so they must hear that subtle click noise and it draws their attention to the camera!

      @@TheOutdoorTheater ADD A WARNING AT THE START.......Dogs can eat - and many really enjoy - peanut butter. But beware, some peanut butter brands contain an ingredient called xylitol, which is toxic to dogs and even eating small amounts can be fatal. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is often used in foods to keep the product sugar-free.
