  • When most people think about medieval marriages they are either practical, cold, and loveless, or the idealised “courtly love” of chivalric knights and damsels in distress. ‘With one person believing they were married and the other one not so much’....😂 That seems to be a type of marriage that’s still practiced to this day.

    While you started talking about scandals when royals marry for love, I remembered the love story of D. Pedro I of Portugal and Inês de Castro, our own Romeo and Juliet. He was married when he met her through his wife (Inês was Constança's lady-in-waiting). He had to marry Constança because of an issue with the King of Castile (she was married to him first, but he then wanted to dissolve the marriage and marry Pedro's sister instead). Even when Constança died in 1349, Pedro and Inês were not allowed to live their love freely. The king, Pedro's father, asked three men to kill Inês in 1355, and she was assassinated while Pedro was gone. He never forgave his father, and when he became king, he had her corpse exhumed and crowned queen.

    There was a custom called "posting the banns," in which a couple seeking marriage would make their intentions known publicly, in order than anyone who had a legitimate prior claim on either of them could raise objections beforehand. This still survives in the commonplace "Should anyone present know of any reason that this couple should not be joined in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace." =^[.]^=

    Margaret Beaufort was actually 12 when she was married to Edmund Tudor. At the age of nine was required to assent formally to the marriage, which was basically the pre contract. And then she went on to have Henry at 13.

    • @graceneilitz7661
      @graceneilitz7661 5 месяцев назад

      12 was the youngest that a girl could consent to a binding pre contract. If the pre contract was made before she was 12, than it was not binding.

Bittersteel and Bloodraven both loved Shiera Seastar, and the Seven Kingdoms bled. The Prince of Dragonflies loved Jenny of Oldstones so much he cast aside a crown, and Westeros paid the bride price in corpses. All three of the sons of the fifth Aegon had wed for love in defiance of their father's wishes. And because that unlikely monarch had followed his heart when he chose his queen, he allowed his sons to have their way, making bitter enemies when he might have made fast friends. Treason and turmoil followed, as night follows day..."

      Just accept that the Middle Ages, and especially religion, were full of contradictions. Logic and ethics weren't really present. As we can still observe if you look at today's religious countries. Religion isn't about logic, it's about what fits the agenda this way at one particular moment, and fits the agenda that way at another moment.

      You are out of touch with what marriage is. Marrisgecis to have a steady sex partner, and ensures the care of the woman and child because of pregnancy and childbirth , and the needs of the child . You cant just have people having sex behind every bush, getting prego and then who des the woman go to for help......which she will need. This way it stops jealousy, enables for smooth and fair transition of wealth, and endures people are taken care of, everyone knows who they're responsible for...... and agree to it. We don’t claim the Catholics. Sometimes seems they have done more damage to Christianity than Satan himself
      A bit confused as to what exactly your position is here. Do you not want marriage to be considered sacred? Is it a bad thing for marriage vows to be viewed as significant? Or are u just making the point that Christians don’t always live up to their own ideals when it comes to marriage? No one is perfect. That doesn’t mean that the ideals themselves are bad.

      @@bastiaanvanbeek and therein lies the problem. We shouldn't sacrifice veracity for the sake of simple entertainment. What would be the point?
      I just don't see why this channel hides its sources unless there's something fishy about it. Surely it wouldn't be so difficult to do.
      Other RUclips channels with historical content do it and it really does add credibility. "Do your own research" is a lazy abdication of responsibility.

    • @bastiaanvanbeek
      @bastiaanvanbeek 5 месяцев назад

      @@boogiesmell5181 I do agree that including sources would be better, and I find the whole recent internet progression of "sensation" above reliability very unfortunate. It seems like people online are valuing truthfulness less and sadly rely on impression and intutition instead. The consensus among many TikTok, RUclips and Instagram users seems to be "if it sounds good, then it is good". That is troubling.
