- This painting has been discussed endlessly by art historians, but it remains a mystery what it actually means.
In this video, I discuss the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck (1390-1441), one of the greatest masterpieces in art history.
What appears to be a painting of a couple in a bedroom probably has a much darker meaning behind it.
I discuss all the details of the work and explain why I believe the theory I present is the correct one.

I have always felt that The velvet chest on the far wall below the mirror, obscured by the subjects bodies, was a cradle for a baby.
When I was a child, everyone said that she was not pregnant, it was just fashion as it was a wedding photo. Then I heard it was during times of plague so getting married pregnant would show fertility. Then I heard that she was pregnant and it was a family portrait. But I like your idea the most. It would also explain the cradle being partially hidden.

Now that you mention it, this is indeed likely the case. The hidden cradle indeed fits with this theory!
This is my all time favorite portrait. Saw it first in college and loved it for over 50 years. Imagine: it's 600 years old! I have seen in another video how monks could paint small features: they used a small glass vial filled with water. It definitely works as a magnifying glass. The young man must have loved her very much. He looks so subdued.

I believe this was a momento mori for the death of ArnolFini's wife in childbirth.

Er is veel meer aan de hand dan wat men nu verondersteld , als eerste de kandelaar lijken op soldatenhelm, met verwijzing naar het linkeroog , dan de hand van hem en haar, zijn hand heeft een litteken aan zijn pols,dan lijkt zijn hand op een achterwerk waar een vinger / duim naar verwijst oorhaakjes pols is niet ongeschonden en lijkt dat het wat besmeurd is ,dan de kralenketting aan de muur met twee kwastjes die kralen vertonen ook figuurtjes en ook weer een met een oog, aan de andere kant hangt er ook een kwast, ik neem aan dat er door de schilder heel wat meer heeft geschilderd dan alleen deze schilderij, dan een andere schilderij moeder en kind op schoot, het kind vertoond een op het oog geslagen is ,het vertoont een oog die geschonden is, rode slippers houdt in ,dat er een slippertje is geweest dus overspel waarschijnlijk door iemand waar rode slippers dragers een gewoonte waren, houten slippers verwijzen naar van Eyck,dus het houtsoort waar de schilder naar verwijst één eikenboom , waarschijnlijk een kind van,Van Eyck, ook is er iets vreemds aan de pilaren een donkerbruin en de andere geel met donkere vlekjes erop geschilderd , dan de brug waar van Eyck met nog iemand naar kijkt met toren ,waarschijnlijk iemand die hooggeplaatste is , maar er is nog een schilderij die als gestolen bekend staat ,daar staat zij op als weelderig gekleed met parels met naast haar een man rossig haar plus baardje en wijst op een knoop die gemaakt is van een groene doek om zijn middel ,heeft een groene jurk aan van die tijd de gewoonte en een blauwe soort van omslagdoek,ook daar staat zij op als hoogzwanger en houdt een beker vast bezet met 5 parels, aan de onderkant zie je een kruis en een piramide vorm daarnaast weer een kruis ,misschien moet je alle schilderijen tegelijk zien om te weten te komen wat zich heeft voorgedaan,ook dat schilderij heeft een raam uitkijkend op groen veld met twee bomen die als twee stammen bezit ,dus Eigelijk drie bomen waar twee dubbele stammen hebben ,afijn details te over net als die ene op achtergrond ook vogels heeft zoals een Pauw , P-A-U-W
Even nog dit over de kandelaar met grote middenstuk ook als soldaat waar de anderen op vastzitten aan een soort van armen en dan komen de andere soldatenhelmen, ik denk dat het met Rode kruis ridders te maken hebben plus de Masonic/ Jesuits, ik denk zelfs dat die twee Arnolfini en zij vastgebonden zaten aangezien hun littekens aan de polsen misschien door de geestelijken tot bekentenissen afgedwongen ,omdat Arnolfini later ook weggegaan is dus waarschijnlijk onderdruk moest vertrekken

Several years ago, a female art critic brought up all these points and I believe she was the first to notice all the symbolism. I agree with this perspective.
Yes this was in the early 21st century, not too long after it was discovered that Arnolfini only married his second wife in 1447. Only then could all the dots be connected.
Meg Koerner was (seemingly) the first to put this theory forward in 2006 in the BBC documentary 'Northern Art' - which happened to have been written and presented by her husband, Leo Koerner. She was again featured by Waldemar Januszczak in his series Art Mysteries. Waldemar also seems to agree with the theory.

'Both argued that advances in realism and accuracy in the history of Western art since the Renaissance were primarily the result of optical instruments such as the camera obscura, camera lucida, and curved mirrors, rather than solely due to the development of artistic technique and skill. Nineteenth-century artists' use of photography had been well documented.'
That's interesting thanks for sharing! One artist who almost certainly used a camera obscura was Johannes Vermeer during the 17th century. I would be quite amazing that Jan van Eyck already used such a device more than two centuries earlier!
When you look at it at the British National Gallery, it's shocking how small it is. From the viewing point, it's impossible to see the details.
Yes it's really incredible! Jan van Eyck has larger paintings as well and they feature the same level of details, truly amazing!

Have an art history minor. Studied the Renaissance under Thomas Martin. I've always thought all of van Eyck heads resemble eggs. A whole world of Humpty-Dumpty's!
