So you purchased a used Sprinter and you can’t wait to get started on the build, but before you stuff your insulation and throw up a few studs, you need to take care of a few things.
In this video we’ll cover all the steps you should be taking in order to prep your used sprinter van for conversion.
Gut the van of any unwanted materials
Clean out the cobwebs and give it a bath
Identify and treat any exposed metal and rust.
Apply a new topcoat
Seal all of the exterior trim water leaks
Now that your van is looking and smelling better than ever, it’s time to move onto sound deadening. Stay tuned for our next video where we slap some tar on our walls.

There weren't too many specific products that we used during our preparations that need to be shared, but if you're interested in the rust reformer, protective enamel, and sealant we used, I'll link them below. PS....we went with spray paint thinking we were only going to touch up a few spots, but ended up covering the whole floor. If you plan on covering the same amount of surface area, it might be easier to go with a gallon and roll/brush it on.

Thought I'd add a comment for the algorithm. You are probably my favorite vanlife content creator. I originally found you when looking for tutorial videos but your funny personality and honesty kept me watching all of your videos. It's just an extra treat when it happens to be an actual van building/maintenance video now. I'm happy for ya and wish you the best!
Thanks for sticking around and taking the time to leave a comment on here. We're trying to put more focus on releasing regular content in order to grow the channel so your views and interactions are greatly appreciated!
i dont even have a garage nor a drive. my car has to park on the street. repair work is a nightmare. you are blessed for this kind of land.
I genuinely like that you don’t “gloss over” your errors in judgment. Your character and excellent sense of humor are why I’ve followed DCVM from the beginning.
Handle leak: Carefully applied thin bead of silicone all around the outside of the latch housing; same on the inside. If you want to fix it permanently, take the latch apart and replace the rubber. I just did this on my SUV.
Totally looking forward to the insulation/sound deadening. I think it’s the single thing that made the biggest difference in maintaining a temperate (and private) mobile living space. 🌿🐾🌀💗
Thanks for watching and sharing the tip!
And so it begins! I love how thorough your conversion videos are. Yes there was only one van before, but nothing is too small especially when it could cause much worse problems later. You don’t just tell…you show. I love also how you describe the van as both of yours ❤️ And those string and Lima beans, you know those are the only kind we all can’t get enough of!🐶
You know you a surfer when you say there’s dings in your van 😂
That's my fridge! I've had it for a year and I love it.
The brush that Julie was using is called a deck brush, they are a must have in any home.
Glad to see more of Julie❤️✨
I'll let her know you said so! We're slowly getting her used to talking on camera haha
She did great. I love her sense of humour, it comes across well❤️✨
Sip, sip, sip, sip, sip (those that know…….know!) 🙃
So many tasty treats in the Iceco :) loving the new build serie
Is your old man going to help on this build? Looking forward to the transformation. Honestly I think your van builds are some of your best content.
Yeah he'll definitely be jumping in on the build from time to time!
Loved the commercial at the end! You always take things and make them your own. I hate driving, but love to watch your vanlife and crusty crusaders. Living vicariously I guess, LOL .Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching Elisabeth!
Hahaha love the channel! You may have to add “girl” to your name! DogCatVanManGirl hahaha
Nice video. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Sprinters will leak water and rust. Great German engineer
❤❤❤ Can't wait to see all the things you choose!
Prep work looked pretty fun but I bet it probably wasn't...sign of a good video! Good work! See you in the next one :)
It took us a bit longer than we expected haha
Yes Rusto is smelly , but thats beauty of it. Nothing like it lol 😆
haha agreed!
A penny well earned
Didn't even lose my tongue!
@@dogcatmanvan Thats a plus!
Awesome guys 👍😎 glad to see y’all working on the new van conversion 🙃🥾 looking forward to seeing updates on your new home 🏡 always fun n informative posts 🤓
thanks for sharing and safe travels
Thanks Tom!
Kudos to you both for epic preparation! Appears a real design fault with those outside strips, as for the door handle??? As always, you guys rock!
My go-to degreaser/all-purpose cleaner is 409. I also use WD 40 to remove stickers. Works like charm :)
LOL "we're not quitters were gonna stick with our terrible decision"😄 Glad I found you though....just pulled up the floor of a 2000 conversion van and see some rust, not THROUGH, but definitely needs attention. I'll spray like you did then (brush/roll) on the rustoleum😉Have you ever heard of covering the floor holes with silicone and a penny??
No I've never seen that method before haha. I have seen people do body work using a pack of ramen noodles though!
@@dogcatmanvan hahahaha well THAT takes some talent!!😄
Guarantee you guys that if you post a really corny couple picture the views will explode. Hoping the algorithm picks up the new videos so you can get the views you deserve! ❤️
Yeah we might have to experiment with that and see if it yields any results!
Yay! Love it, excited for more!
I’ll add a few random comments as well to help or hinder……..go rock!!!! And the other one not rock 🐶
So excited for the new build!
Good job!
Cool vid
Always so happy to see your video!!!
Great work guys
Thanks!
Great job thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
👏
Feesh killed me!
You could have used marine sealant if you wanted the longest lasting sealant and the toughest stuff as it’s marine grade.
We've used it on several other applications for our van.
@@dogcatmanvan yeah I saw that! Nice build by the ways it’s looking great!👍
👍
Who dis gurl? I like.
I know, right!? I like her too.
She's Julie. Ben's Julie's new lad. He updated us a few videos ago. Happy that it's going well! Their dogs deserve happy parents. 🐶🐶💛💚
🙂👍
Eat all the 🧀 cheese 🧀!!!!!!
7:00 - I think I spy, with my little eye, a Man who lives in a van, who is higher than a kite on a windy night. The rustoleum really gets to you before you know it's happening.
Yeah it didn't take long for me to release I needed a mask on
😡 that’s the fridge I’ve been banging my head against a wall trying to get grrrr, they sent me to iceco sent me to alibaba and they just annoyed the shoop out of me 😀 I wonder if they would allow one as carry on next time I flew to the US 🤪, I have the new van and I will be sealing the trim fittings before I start fitting out 🙃
so you are officially the Chip Gains of van builds......wait...you still have to eat a roach....lol
If I ever come across one I'll make sure to eat it for you!
Recommend you check out George Mauro if Humble Road on RUclips. He's a meticulous van builder with lots if good ideas. One you should think about us he specs out his entire build in cardboard, so he & his customers can get a true feeling of how the space works. About her thing he dies us he makes all the wiring accessible. Check him out! Cheers, Keren.
I actually talked with George a bit about our heated floor system a few weeks ago. We also did some cardboard templates for our layout along with a 3d rendering in order to properly plan for our aluminum extrusion. I'll be making this build far more easy to trouble shoot in comparison to my last one!
@@dogcatmanvan Good for you! Looking forward to watching the build!
