These Summer shows were priced around $11.00 dollars. I went to 9-10 of these shows. There would be about 5 bands over an 8 hour span. Skynyrd was opening for Peter Frampton. The shows were called ‘Day on the Green.’ Usually there would be about 60,000 people there.

Yeah, the guitar players were always incredible, but I would suggest that their secret weapon was Billy Powell. His piano playing really helped define the sound of the band. Also, if you listen very closely you'll fine that Leon Wilkeson played some ridiculously cool bass lines.

    • @edreiser
      @edreiser 3 года назад +2

And Billy Powell was just a roadie he suggested the piano intro the band liked it made him a member and the rest is history.

I was 15 and was in the second level left field at that show, one of the greatest concerts I have seen. Another must watch song from that show is, "The Breeze". Every time I see this video My eyes get wet, remembering this show and how epic it was, and the tragedy soon after.
The rest of that show was opened by Peter Frampton and then The Outlaws. A few days later at the same stadium was Santana. Later in July the 23 was another epic concert; Rick Derringer, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and Derringer. What a great month for a 15 year old!

I won't argue with you -- Skynyrd was amazing and the trio of Allen Collins (a seriously underrated guitarist IMO), Gary Rossington and Steve Gaines on guitars is just mind blowing. Artemis Pyle is tearing it up on the drums for the entire song, Leon Wilkeson is doing amazing work on the bass, Ronnie was smooth as always on vocals and Billy Powell powerful on the piano.

Not just that, but look how healthy everybody looked back then! Nobody is 400lbs! Since this time, the sugar industry added sugar into EVERYTHING we eat, and the soda industry got vending machines into schools and universities. The fast food industry also sponsors nutritional books for schools that suggest that a burger is healthy because of the lettuce and tomato, lol.

I went to their last concert in Greenville SC with a guy who didn't really want to be there. He insisted that we leave before their last encore which was Freebird. I insisted that we stop & listen to it through the back wall of the building. They tore it up. The building was actually vibrating. It was devastating to learn about the crash the next day. I've never quite forgiven him for making me miss seeing them do this song that night even though we've been married for over 30 years now. Thanks for doing this one.

This one is tremendous and my favorite but just for fun If you’re looking for a tremendous live performance from Lynyrd Skynyrd you are missing what is rated as the 3rd best live performance in history.
It is the “Freebird” performance in England at the Knebworth music festival. The back story may be more important than the performance itself. Look it up for much more detail but here is an extremely shortened version if you don’t have time.
Skynyrd was called to play the Knebworth festival in England as many bands were. The Rolling Stones were the headliners. Skynyrd locked themselves away for weeks tightening up and planning their “try to follow that one” performance. The stage was set up like the Stones logo. A mouth with a tongue that went out into the crowd. Mick Jagger forbid anyone from performing on the tongue because that was for him and him only. The crowd is sleeping and not paying attention when Skynyrd comes on stage. They break into their last song of the set “Freebird” and by the time its over the whole crowd is up and clapping and dancing and jamming! Talking about waking people up! OH and yes they performed most of the song right down there on the tip of the tongue! LOL Who cares what Mick said!
great performance…even better knowing the story behind what was going on.
sorry for the long post I shortened it a lot

My fav band of all time & probably one of the most underrated ever! The most underrated musical/songwriting genius in Ronnie, the most underrated guitarist in Allen Collins (in white) who wrote this music when he was only 16-17 years old (he wrote the chord progression for this song & took 2 years to get the solo where he wanted it). The opening lyrics came courtesy of a fight Allen & his then girlfriend, Kathy (later his wife, who also tragically passed after hemorrhaging during the miscarriage of their third child) had, who turned to him & said "if I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" . Ronnie initially didn't want to write the song saying that there were too many chord changes. Of course, he eventually changed his mind after hearing Allen play it one day, yet again lol...told him to keep playing the chords over & over & wrote the lyrics in about 5 minutes. Imo, every single band member from Artemis on drums, Billy on piano, Leon on bass, Gary on slide guitar in this song & Stevie on backup lead to Allen were all extremely underrated! Any questions, I can probably answer. Just a FYI...in exactly 10 days @ 6:52pm it will be 43 years since the plane crash that killed Ronnie, Stevie, his sister & backup singer (Honkette) Cassie & the band's asst road manager Dean Kilpatric along with the 2 pilots who were solely responsible for the crash. A day I'll never, ever forget as it still weighs as heavy on me now as it did then. 😭

No way on gods green earth is this band or anyone in this line up underrated, my only guess would be is you were not around in their heyday. I was 19 in 1977 and every bar band tried to copy Lynyrd skynyrd. You need to look up the word underrated and understand what it means..

If you want to see much more of the band, with less audience camera time, try their live show in England. I forget the name of the town, but it is a wild tutorial of incredible guitar playing. Funny story: Lynard Skynyrd was opening for the Rollong Stones. The Stones had insisted that no opening act use their specially built "tounge" part of the stage. Ronnie literally ushers his guitarist right onto that tounge stage as a fu to the Stones.

You don’t tell Ronnie not to do something. Lol
After their gig on stage no one wanted to follow them that night. The next band 10CC did not play because of “tech”issues. The Stones were 30 minutes late hitting the stage.

Between this song and Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven it has been the most requested songs for over 40 years
Was lucky to see them with Ronnie Vanzant once but have seen them 6 times in total.
Worked one of there shows I ran track light.
My opinion when we lost Ronnie was when Southern Rock started coming to a end.
You reacted to Blackfoot there guitar player Bill Medlock now plays for Skynard and that's who I followed with The track light awesome band great performers.
I would recommend anyone to see them.
Great Reaction as always SYDE Stay Safe 😀😀

Saw them twice, once with Ronnie in Fresno. CA, just a few months before the crash, don't remember the concert day but it had to be within a week or so of this, it being in Oakland. I remember the crash date, it's my birthday. 10-20-77 I woke up to my 20 th birthday and the news they had crashed. Not a good day but the concerts were great. I thought it was the same with Johnny. To me they sound the same or as close as it could get and just like in 77, when they were done, so were you. . Greg Allman was the headliner on the 2nd one, big mistake. Music was great, but everyone was spent, people were walking out on him. DONT EVER FOLLOW SKYNYRD, at least not the 2 times I saw them. Be 43 years on the 20th RIP RONNIE..

This song was requested much more than Stairway. Not close. I remember hearing DJ's in Toronto talking about how every weekend the request for Freebird just get overwhelming and they had to ask people to stop calling in for it.

Southern Rock rabbit hole.....I like it. This band right here.....they’ve got a catalog of hits, Freebird is their signature song.
These guys are about to turn it up like none other, LIVE. This level of talent is worth the time for sure. Enjoy! 🎼🎶🎸🎵🎵🎹🎤🔥😎
Love this video as we can see actual talent, no click tracks,no auto tune....no no- talent.
Love the reactions, so much live music out there to enjoy, keep going......have fun discovering the music.😄

That was great you couldn't get enough of Allen Steve and Leon. Sad, all but two up there are gone. And they can't get along. I don't get in the " so and so is the best guitarist in the band" they all, with Ed King, had bad ass skills, and made the sound. R.I.P. Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Allen and his wife, Billy, Ed, Leon, and all the crew that have gone.

YAY! My all time favorite song. I love music of all kinds and it is so hard to choose a favorite, but I would have to say this is it. I listened to this song every day for the four years I went through High School. I would sit to do my homework and put this on and it was the only way I could get it done. LOL. So many wonderful memories from this song.

It was a beautiful night in the Ozark smelling the smoke from the guitar and the Ozark Sweet Bud in the air

Seeing Skynyrd live was always the BEST show. Allman Brothers were a close second. I was fortunate to have seen them early on then the second iteration that recently retired. IMHO the 3 guitar attack of Collins, Rossington & King/Gaines was revolutionary. Allen Collins was possibly a top 5 guitarist.

I have listened to this song since it came out but I never felt it until I saw it live during the final tour. I know it wasn't the same without the originals but if felt good and watching the live videos of this and others in the late 60s and 70s reminds me of how much fun things were back then.

Thanks for reacting to my home town neighborhood boys! When I was about 14 ...this hit the radio here in Jacksonville ...at first all I heard was the AM radio short version without the jam at the end... then I was telling my buddy about it and he said "listen to it on the FM station ...they play the whole song" and then he blew my mind and said ...You know, they are from right here in our neighborhood. We were so lucky in those days. We got to see the Allman brothers play in Willowbranch park for what was the first concert they ever played as the original Allman Brothers band. We were park rats in that park we had no idea what we were seeing and hearing ....some years later another friend took me to see Molly Hatchet ....I remember him saying "they play like Skynyrd" ...His brothers band was in a outdoor battle of the bands which also had 38 Special in it. What a blessing it was to be surrounded by such good music in them days. The further you dig into Skynyrd the more gems you will find. Also check out another Jacksonville act that is performing these days...JJ Grey and Mofro ....You can find the live versions of The Sun is shinning down and Lochloosa here on youtube ....trust me! You will love it!
