The fist guitarist was Gary Rossington, the one in white was Allen Collins and the one in the red pants was Steve Gaines. The singer was Ronnie Van Zant. Ronnie, Steve and Steve's sister/ backup singer Cassey Gaines were killed when the bands plane crashed just a few months after this video was shot.

Absolutely-Leon's bass IS insane. You're right, the other elements in this classic often get kind of overlooked because of the brilliance of the guitars but the piano, drums and bass are just as much a part of this song.

Glad to see another RnR music aficionado (Anne P.) take note of the bass player, Leon Wilkeson. Raging through those notes so cleanly and fast on those metal cables that are bass strings. Thanks for putting up another enjoyable reaction video, Duane! Too many times reactors say the "three guitars" in Lynyrd Skynyrd are fantastic -- completely ignoring Leon. THERE ARE 4 GUITARS in L.S., folks!

The dude in white was LARKIN ALLEN COLLINS. The man could RIP on guitar!! He wrote that lead when he was 17-18-19 years old. My favorite lead of all time too. Hard to believe that less than 3 months later LYNYRD SKYNYRDS plane crashed killing lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, Guitarist in red pant STEVE GAINES and Steve’s sister back up singer CASSIE GAINES. Guitarist Gary Rossington (slide in video) broke every bone in his body. Allen Collins (in white) broke his neck (and if not for his father interjecting) was minutes from having his right arm amputated. Allen was never the same after plane crash. Then (after healing up) & 2 years after crash -& after making killer recording with ROSSINGTON COLLINS band - the band is about to go out on tour in 1980 and Allen’s wife dies during childbirth to his daughter.. sent him into 8 year spiral until his death.

The man in white is Allen Collins. He wrote the music and part of the lyrics for this classic when he was 16 or seventeen years old. Unfortunately, everyone in this band, except the drummer, Artimus Pyle, has passed on. I agree that this is the best guitar solo of all time (only behind Comfortably Numb, so second best in my book). This song is at the very top of the all-time best rock tunes ever written and performed. No question. Although almost all members of LS have passed on, their music will continue for all time.

Yeah don't plan on finding a guitar solo that will ever top this one. Funny I'm mostly a hip hop fan but this has been my favorite song of all time for the past 20+ years. If your looking for more "Simple Man", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "Give Me Three Steps", and "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" are all bangers and should get you started.

Just saw the '77 video of Skynyrd. I graduated high school in '78 in Oregon. Always wanted to see the band...I had their 8 track. Sadly they passed away in that horrid plane wreck shortly after the concert you played. My wife and I saw the new Skynyrd in early 90s. We want to see them 4 times. The last was their farewell tour. Sadly my wife passed away 1 year later. Thank you so much for bringing back those wonderful memories.

This was Southern rock and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial Stadium (football) in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Things were different then and in many ways a lot more fun. You probably know by now the band was in a plane crash 3 months after this concert. I'm looking forward to watching more of your reactions

R.I P. to all the FREEBIRDS in Skynyrd, including Bob Burns and Eddie King, who left before the plane crash that ended it all..

You just witnessed "The Four Horseman of the music Apocalypse"!!! Here is how the song works. Gary Rosington plays slid lead in the beginning. Allen Collins (in white) comes in playing the lead solo. While he is playing lead, Gary is playing rhythm. Steve Gaines is playing lead WITH Allen and matching him in areas and providing lead fill in others. Listen to the song several times and you will hear Steve's lead behind Allen's and Gary's rhythm. It is a music masterpiece.

You can easily tell southern rock from other genre's just by the structure of the songs and instruments. Southern Rock always always used heavy guitars and heavy picking. By that I mean throughout the song they often had some type of lead going on even when playing rhythm. Allman Bros, Charlie Daniels, Outlaws etc. IMO the tale tale sign was the picking and hardly any bar chords or very little anyway. When you watch Collins play rhythm or Dickie Betts or any of these guys their using the old schools chords to play.
