When LS returned to the States, reporters asked Ronnie why did he defy Mick Jagger's request to stay off the tough ? Ronnie told them he felt like the wrong band closed that night and he just wanted to prove to everyone that he was right. And he finished by saying, --- " And we did ".
If you ask me, the Stone's had more to worry about, than where the band stood, on the stage, considering the fact, that you never want your opening act to be better than you.
How to own the Stones on their own stage! I love how the crowd is just killing time, waiting for the "stars" at the beginning, and at the end, they are all on their feat, screaming their lungs out!
My 15 yr old son asked me if i could play him one song that is the pure epitome of rock n roll. I played him this song from this concert. What shocked me is he actually GOT IT. He understood. Till that moment he thought Metallica had the best guitarist. I said "Son, i got a whole world to introduce you to". Next week i'll teach him about Hendrix.
I heard that they were told that they were not supposed to go onto the tongue as that was Mick's place on the stage. I love that Ronnie was like, "fuck that, get on out here boys" and was pushing Allen and Gary down the tongue. Skynyrd owned the stage that day.
tip of the tongue, 😂🤣😂🤣 that is a classic, i read all the comments, everyone , you guys know Ronnie and the boys were the greatest American band of all time 🎶
Agree! I think a big reason that he is underrated is that his career was so short (and tragic)...passing in 1990. Same year as SRV now that I think about it. Damn, 1990 was s**tier than I thought. 😢
I agree, Alan Collins is extremely underrated!! In both his playing ability and his song writing! When ever they create a list of the all-time great guitar players none of the Skynyrd boys get the respect that they deserve! (And they had 4 damn good guitar players in the HOF!)
Lynyrd Skynyrd & Ronnie Van Zant were all about “follow THIS!” They worked their asses off for years before they achieved fame. They were also about attitude & were incessantly in trouble for brawling & excessive intoxication. By the time they played Knebworth they, & Ronnie, were getting their act together & reaching a peak of performance excellence. By the time of the band’s plane crash in Oct 1977, they were probably the most exciting live band in the world.
So old dude here (63), retired...surfing through Free Bird reactions at o'dark thirty and hit yours. "I've heard it before" = skip, but I stuck with ya and man this was a GREAT, clinical, Infantry worthy reaction and commentary off the charts. I laughed with the thumbs up, (Yes...she was) and the tip of the tongue comment. Subscribed, thumbs up and on notifications. Thanks for great commentary. So good I watched it back to back. Best part in the video is the Brit Stone fans planning to get some rest while these yanks play warm up...then realize...a train ran over us.
Ha ha.... I did the same thing at a Stones concert in Anaheim Stadium in 78. Outlaws played and Half way through the Stones performance we left. Outlaws blew the Rolling Stones away as far as I'm concerned.
When you said "Rolling Stones, who? How can you say Rolling Stones when you have Lynyrd Skynyrd on the tip of your tongue?" We cheered you, Brother! Truer words have not been spoken.
Notice Ronnie is physically pushing Allen and Steve to the front , then he waves Gary up and Leon ran out of cord. Leon's bass on both versions is insane. The whole band was more "On" on this version, Ronnie sounded great and it wasn't in the heat in Oakland. There is no question who was in charge. Ronnie. They didn't get near the credit they deserved for their talent. Their individual abilities.
they opened for the Rolling Stones on this show… And according to the British critics, they “blew the Stones off the stage.“ direct from the liner-notes of this album, ladies and gentlemen. (and, yes Ronnie. We heard you that time)
You cannot follow Freebird. I went to Skynyrd opening for ZZ Top. I love ZZ Top, but frankly they don't put on a great show. And they followed Freebird. I actually felt bad for them. The crowd was asleep watching ZZ Top when they just saw Skynyrd.
Seeing them,so young, and on top of the World,it’s hard to know that the terrible plane crash, that killed Ronnie,Steve and Cassie, was just a year later.
It wasn't that Skynyrd blew the Stones off the stage, but Skynyrd was on earlier and obviously killed in their set. The Stones were the headliner and closed the show but they were late, like 2-3 hours late for their set. They were reportedly wasted and shabby in their performance. So shabby the crowd began to yell for Skynyrd to come back. That pissed them off. They left after maybe a handful of songs. Skynyrd was good in the studio but they were primarily a LIVE band. They practiced their asses off in an old house with no AC they called the Hell House. Ronnie demanded perfection. It showed in their concerts too.
What I liked was the fact the crowd did not know what was coming. They were sitting there or laying down sleeping...then the guitar solo starts. They sat up quick and paid attention to greatness.
I think they should play Nationwide every morning every night people need to be reminded especially right now that we are a free people in America and we will not be put in a box pushed into our homes we will not be controlled and that was one of the big messages of the song
You like the Bass guitar in this video. Go back to the Oakland performance and check out Leon on the Bass at 15min-39sec to 16min-05sec. He's playin' the Bass like a lead guitar!
Back when we went to music festivals that lasted days, concerts that lasted hours, thousands of people from every walk of life and every skin color and, EVERYBODY HAD A GREAT TIME.
I’m from Alabama and I love that Ronnie has on a Muscle Sholes Sound shirt on I have that same shirt. Love how he is representing the great state of Alabama in Knebworth.
I been hearing this song for over 40 years, could never tell you how many times but can say it is always wonderful! Like the first time at something you love, never ever get sick of it🎸
In 1976, I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in Long Beach California. The Outlaws opened for them. Still ranks in the top 2 of concerts. Queen being the other. You mentioned the bass player. He was shredding all nite. I'm surprised the bass still had strings on it at the end.. Ronnie Vanzant would go on stage with no shoes because (and I quote) I want to feel the stage sizzle. (End quote). And boy, did it. They were the greatest party band.
I saw them in Anaheim stadium. March 21, 1976 was was 17. And August 27, 1977 I was 19. Both concerts were unbelievable. October 20, 1977 plane crash. Went into shock and cried. 62 now and I still listen to them all the time.
Loved them then and I still love them NOW. I'm 62 and they are the best. They are better than the Rolling Stones. Their music always moves me...An old man in Tennessee...Ron
This is a much better video than Oakland. They concentrate on showing the band instead of the crowd. And the end was not truncated like the Oakland video. Yet, everyone still reacts to Oakland.
2 times in history the Rolling Stones were upstaged by the opening act. James Brown in 1964 at the T.A.M.I. show and here by Lynyrd Skynyrd at Knebworth.
Laughing he pulls gary and allen down the forbidden tongue, then gestures come in down to steve and leon the bass. Leon stops short, I have to believe he did not have a 50 foot cable like the guitarists
Thank you for reacting to this version! I looked it up and they say they aren’t sure exactly how many people were there but could be as high as 300,000! I may be a grandmother now but I’m from Jacksonville, Skynyrd’s home town. I still won’t get out of the car if Skynyrd is on my radio. That guitar army gets you every time!
I just checked out the Stones at Knebworth Festival.. They looked and sounded like crap. SKYNYRD!! SKYNYRD!! SKYNYRD!! Wish I had known back then how freakin’ Amazing they were!! I would trade EVERY Stones concert i went to and every album of theirs just to have seen Skynyrd once!!

Did you know that the whole LS band show at the (Knebworth festival) is being released on Blu-ray+DVD+CD+ vinyl in 2021 April, I found the Blu-ray at Amazon.
Don;t walk on my tounge, Ha Ha , we are going to use the whole stage, Ronnie had Balls Man, you can see Ronnie tough the back of Gary Rossington, and said let;s go out there, on the Tounge, Like Ronnie used to say, ''BRING ALL MY MULES OUT HERE;;, the reason that Leon, the bass player did not go all the way out there was because, his guitar chord was not long enough, Rock On, History Here, R.I.P. TO ALL, COUSIN FIGEL
Its crazy how the crowd looks almost asleep through the show - even laying out on the ground....until, that is...that THE solo begins....they start clapping....start looking up....start standing....by the end, looked like everyone was on their feet jumping and clapping. Even the show's promoter, backstage, is rumored to have mused aloud...'HOW do you follow that?'
Also, I do not know if you heard, but Ronnie told the boys to play this for Dwayne Allman, a good friend of theirs who had died. He was with the Allman Brother's Band.
I love how LIT Ronnie is in this video with that guitar solo which is 🔥🔥🔥🔥The good 'ol days when everything was tight right along with being stoned, intoxicated or both. In 1977 I was 15. I begged and begged my state trooper dad to go to the LSU concert WITHOUT him. So when he finally said yes my bestie & I were ecstatic. The same man who said yes, also told me Ronnie had passed away. To ALL who had the pleasure to see them live, you really witnessed something great. We STILL remember and miss you ✨✨
LOL. I’ll just bet it is hard to say Rolling Stones with Lynyrd Skynyrd on your tongue. I like this performance because it’s longer. The camera didn’t catch Allen jumping as much, but we definitely heard the boy play. 🎶😃
Most people would say Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama were their best, but my favorite of theirs is Simple Man. If you review it, pull up the one with the lyrics.
Just rewatched the tongue part after you mentioned it. Ronnie walked Allen and Gary out himself then motioned Steve out then Leon who had to stop short due to his cord not being long enough. Dayum!!! You go Ronnie!
Our music was the best!
Truth . They blew stones away that day 🎸📟📟🎸🍻🥃
Mick is from England. He didn't know that if you tell a southern boy not to do something that that's exactly what he's gonna do hahahaha.
When LS returned to the States, reporters asked Ronnie why did he defy Mick Jagger's request to stay off the tough ? Ronnie told them he felt like the wrong band closed that night and he just wanted to prove to everyone that he was right. And he finished by saying, --- " And we did ".
The moment the British Invasion of rock-n-roll ended,Lynyrd Skynyrd, blew the Stones away in their own backyard
My opinion Leon wilkeson is one of them was one of the greatest bass players of all time R.I.P. brother
My god, when Ronnie and the others lost their lives on October 20th 1977...we all lost 😢💔
Played harder , partied harder loved harder all with the best rockers on earth. I respect all the great rockers, but nobody could touch Skynard .
If you ask me, the Stone's had more to worry about, than where the band stood, on the stage, considering the fact, that you never want your opening act to be better than you.
You never tell Ronnie Van Zant not to do something. 😂
True
I think if Ronnie could've, he would have wheeled the drums and piano out on that tongue as well!
I SAW THEM 3 NIGHTS LATER AFTER THIS SHOW IN SPRINGFIELD MASS!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😍😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Man those southern boys went out on the Stones stage and played like it was July 4th 1776
Mick: Stay off the tongue.
Ronnie: Hold my beer. Let's go boys!
And thats why the Stones took forever to come on stage who wants to follow that performance.
the stones came on late cos 10cc took forever to set up
That's called......."Blowing them OFF THE STAGE!!"
and remember......no reverb or auto-tune. WE HAD THE BEST MUSIC!
Just wanted to say the guy top left at 3:46 behind the bloke dancing around is me. Honest to god. Been boring my friends with it for years.

I love this band but when things get serious Allen Collins takes over and steals the show! The guy is so underrated he was unbelievable!
Yes he was. Collins was a Stone Cold Freak. Freaking G.O.A.T.
Agree! I think a big reason that he is underrated is that his career was so short (and tragic)...passing in 1990. Same year as SRV now that I think about it. Damn, 1990 was s**tier than I thought. 😢

Long haired country boys change their lives🎤🎼😄😄😄😄💖
Ronnie making his boys come out💀
Some of us did, we'd seen Skynyrd on the Old Gray Whistle Test so we were looking forward to seeing them here. Suffice to say they did not disappoint.
Notice Ronnie is physically pushing Allen and Steve to the front , then he waves Gary up and Leon ran out of cord. Leon's bass on both versions is insane. the Stones were so pissed because the crowd went crazy over Lynyrd Skynrd & Mick refused to come out until the crowd calmed down. i loved it!!!
Skynyrd was the 2nd of 4 bands that day. Then next band up took over 2 hours to set up. No one wanted to follow Skynyrd.

Jaggers big mistake was telling a bunch of small town boys you can't walk on my tongue if he'd of said nothing it wouldn't be something
I'm glad you mentioned that. You can see Ronnie kept pushing them 😂👄
It wasn't that Skynyrd blew the Stones off the stage, but Skynyrd was on earlier and obviously killed in their set. That was a good old fashioned a-- whooping.
I read in a music magazine the top 500 rock songs of history. Free Bird was number one. I don't think Jagger can claim that fame!
Bass cable ran short on the touge .....DAMN-IT.....HE WANTED in too...😎😎😉😉
And he deserved to be there too. Absolutely superb on the bass.
Simply the best band that ever existed!🦅🦅🦅🦅
Gary Rossington (on slide guitar), the last surviving member of the original band will be 71 on December 4th.
Notice we dont have concerts like that any more
Anything that gives us a common bond is disappearing . Rock didn’t die of natural causes , it was murdered
don"t have music or free people like that any more.
And if we did the ticket prices will kill you nowadays!
I love it when Ronnie pushed them down on the tongue and points to Steve to come down too
What I liked was the fact the crowd did not know what was coming. They were sitting there or laying down sleeping...then the guitar solo starts. They sat up quick and paid attention to greatness.
So glad you mentioned the bass, so many people have never even mentioned that, especially how it picks up at the end.
The very best jam session of any rock band EVER!!! Not even a competition!!
The greatest American band in history .. Rest in Paradise .. Ronnie, Allen, Steve,Leon,Billy, Cassie
Tip of your tongue, ha, ha. I guess Mick Jagger couldn’t get any “Satisfaction” that day. Maybe your greatest reaction of all time? 🔥🔥👍
I think they should play Nationwide every morning every night people need to be reminded especially right now that we are a free people in America and we will not be put in a box pushed into our homes we will not be controlled and that was one of the big messages of the song

Absolutely great review, Sir!
*You could tell Ronnie Van Zant ( Lead Singer ) loved and trusted his band. They were Family.*
Jack nicholson was at this concert. Smoked with Skynyrd back stage.
Why am I not surprised? 😉😉

one thing about it, don,t dare Ronnie van zant cause he,s gonna do it. uh huh. oh an stomped on that tongue to boot.

Oakland had far more eye candy than Knebworth, so there's that. Stones in their own greatness were shitting their pants having to follow Skynyrd.
