Yep, I’ve had very good success with these splits. If not for trying to accelerate my bees for an early flow, I’d still do them all like that. And even would still do them vertical over double screens. Thanks for the comment!!
Looks like you got it going on. I made 4 splits this morning with queen cells. opened up a big colony that was full of cells. was not prepared when I ended up finding 7 queens running around in a deep and 3 med colony full of Bees. Talking about chaos. I made 11 splits with the queens and 4 more queen cells that had not emerged. 15 splits Today. Building more Nuc boxes tomorrow. I have 10 cells coming off a graft this Tuesday. I'm running out of equipment.
Running out of equipment….if I had a buck for every time I had that happen when chaos erupted, I’d be in my beach mansion in the Caribbean😁😁😁. Increase is good though and gotta love when we find all those queen running like that. Hate it when we miss that and we lose them all.

Great video you an Steven did on that FULL box of Bees . He is learning from the best. I got into about the same situation today but I had seven queen cells in this one colony an it was full. Poor Bees !] I guess this is OK, maybe good, as any 'Extra Cold Delays,' Fruit Trees Blossom later. . . Nothing worse than having no Fruit. Like my Apples, Pears, Cherries and Plums to much to not get any because of possible 'Frost ' killing the Flowers. . . One year we only had x6 Plum Fruits. . . [No Jam or Pies that Year. 🥺] However, having Bees now, always means their is Honey.👌 The Bees are certainly thanked for all their hard work they do in Pollinating it all for us. Keep real cosy Bees, as this ❄️ means Trees are still on extended Vacation until late March at the earliest. 🙃 Hope we have a Bumper Crop, with warmer, safer days. AND more Hives in my Garden than last year. My little Apiary has doubled in size. Now have x 4 Hives in Situ. A Langstroth : Horizontal Hive, a UK National. An over Wintred [Nat] Nuc Split, and in late Sept 2022, I purchased a 'Warre' Peoples Hive. [12"X12" Boxes.] Hope to increase more by breeding own Queens, via Egg Grafting. And make DIY Warre Nuc Box, with an associated 2nd Warre Hive 'stack'. Watch this space. Need to be ahead of my pupil ! Then the fruit that needs very little cold and zero frost is also suffering (satsuma) due to the multiple days below 20F. But the rest is blooming big and right now we will have a week in the 40F to 35F range which will help to slow things down some. I believe I just heard Fred Dunn describe doing a split the same way without any problems. I hope I end up having a colony that strong to do it myself soon. Those bees down south sure are strong and prolific, I'm starting to worry about having too many bees if I'm not careful. I'm not planning on more than a handful of horizontal hives at most. Tommy. . . Do you have a Bee Club near you? Maybe take a Newbie or two under your Buzzy Wing, 🤭 and make up some 'Nucs' from surplus Bee Population(s). Maybe even make a Newer Queens (teaching session) and Sell / Offer the former one in that Nuc or Nucs. Or, split 'Hive Population(s) : by getting it to work hard 'making' New Wax Frames. Give you a 'Reserve' of great Comb for next coming Bee Season. Good to add new, take out those older ones: eg after x3 Years or so. Melt and Pour your own (chemical free) Foundation Sheets. Amazon Sell Wax Silicon x2 Sided Sheet Molds. . . You know that Comb hasn't come from Wax Exchanges of unknown quality. 🙄 Any QCs made can be Cut out on x13th Day/ Caged / Placed in non Queen side of any depopulated Hive. "Bank them for a few days to Sell." / Give to Bee Club. Take Frames, and or of Shook Spare Bees and Bank on mass in a Single Hive : Feed 1:1 and they will fill 'Empty Woodware Fast', with lovely Fresh Wax. By adding regular Capped Brood, a Caged Queen(s) or even QMP 'Lure' keeps those Bees busy. . . They will act like a Swarm finding a new Home 'needing built' fast. Any Honey is just a bonus. 😉 After a while you can still depopulate 'your hives' (to stop Swarming) by adding Capped Brood to this 'On Mass' Hive.' Once Swarm season receeds, or lessens, say after longest day of Summer : 21st June. [Down Under its : 31st Dec. 🙃] You can start to combine these Colonies back together, using Newspaper. And concentrate on having Young Queens for Colony strength, be great for next Bee Season. [Make Bees of Winter Physiology this year.] This is best done say, by late Summer. Do several VM treatments of different types ! By 'taking' and combining, you can keep your Apiary to a manageable number of Hives. Hope this helps. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2023. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 I too have a Horizontal Hive*. In an SoS Situation. You can lift the Lid, add [Regular] Bee Boxes : Nationals, Langstroths etc. And get these Shook Bees migrating 'up' into these Stacked Boxes. The H H itself may need a temporary flat board(s) added above the Nest. Stack these Hives above. And add an additional Cover Board, with a Tarpaulin over the whole lot (!) When Bees move up, inhabit those Boxes. Stack on Floors, with Roofs. Strap all together. Block Entrances and Sell the Bees on, retain your equipment after installation to New owners own Hive(s). *Not many Beeks keep H H and can't get their head around Colony manipulation(s). By doing the above, you can move, sell, or ask 'your Bee Buyer' to bring their own Boxes ! (They Strap, Carry, Drive away their Bees instead.) You don't lose valuable Boxes, (unless moving on 'older' equipment. This applies to Bee Frames and associated Comb too. . . 😉) Other ways are : To keep Hive Population or Colonies to a set amount : 1) Caging the Queen (Brood Break as IPM.) Reduces Egg laying / less Bees. 2) Have as much Drone Comb to : Take and Freeze (Kills VM and some Capped Brood in the process. Reducing population.) 3) Keep removing 'Emergency' QCs by regular Inspections. Either mash, or keep in Situ to add to a 'Correx Nuc' with some Bees and Sell on. 4) Clip your Queens. OR : Have a Queen Excluder between Brood and Hive Entrance. (Both 'keeps the Queen' back if a Swarm 'occurrs.' Bees will return, when they know they have no Queen. Don't let Swarms happen. Why make your neighbours hate you. Be proactive and pre-empt them from happening in the first place ! 🤞 5) Place these unwanted Bee Population increases : above a Double Screened Board. The QMP will rise thru the Hive. Keep the Base Colony as a viable Colony. While the 'bees' up high, are 'held' static by the Queen in that basement (!) You can combine all back to each other, once the Season gets to late Summer. Population(s) gradually lessens as Bee prepare to be Winter ones, no longer the volume of Summer 'Foragers' as before. Good luck . . . 👍
I’m sure Fred has taught on this type of split. It’s a very effective and easy way to split. You can take it to whatever level of difficulty you desire with regard to how detailed you do it, but in the end, for hobby beekeeping, it’s very easy and forgiving, and effective. It’s very easy to add many hives without meaning to, but you can always sell excess or even bless someone with the gift of a colony. Splitting is a great form of swarm control. Mike, did you borrow some of Bruce's bees or is that just southern bees showing their hospitality? LOL Your type of split there is what I often do. It leaves both hives strong and the queenless hive strong enough to develop a decent queen. If you weren't in a minor nectar flow a little 1 to 1 would help the queenless hive. Looks that way Russell!! But honestly Bruce is seeing a much more toned down yard right now. He is really working hard to get that aggressive trait gone and looks like he’s seeing decent results. I hope so anyhow. Yea, we actually have a really good flow coming since the blackberries are blooming early and they’re blooming heavy. I’ve had to give them 1:1 before, but it’s rare. I like the walk away, if it’s early. It’s all I ever did until three years ago. If it’s late, it takes one hive offline for any significant production, but when it comes to queens, I have to be honest, I’ve never seen what a lot of people have said about inferiority in the queens from emergency cells. I’ve had great queens and bad in both cell intro and emergency cells.
My bees seem to attack my mic's wind screen. The only solution I've found is to use a wireless mic and put it inside my veil. Don't worry too much, Mike, this is reality RUclips, this is what it's about sometimes.
Good morning Brad. The mic they really hate it that furry cover…WOW!! They really go nuts and it gets the entire colony agitated once the guards get agitated. I’ve looked at wireless, but for the old cameras I have, it’s just not a worthy investment.

Very well could be. I know the furry cover makes them even more angry, so could be. Unfortunately with my old technology, I’m limited on mics, but I might need to try a different one.
Use a white or light colored mic/mic cover and get a light colored wrap for your camera. They attack my watch and sting around it because it’s a dark color
You’re right on that. They actually leave the camera alone since it is silver on the front and attack the dark colored mic. I need to find a light colored foam and make a cover and see what they do. The furry cover I tried once….wow!! Should’ve seen that one. It was amazing and completely drowned out any other audio. Won’t ever try that one again😬😬😬
Curious about the bees hitting the camera. Don't think there would be any noise in their audible range. So I'm thinking the camera is giving off a heat signature, and that's what they are after. Cameras do get warm when recording. Last fall I was in my driveway practicing drone take off/landing and general aviation. I was positioned half way between the feeder bucket and the hives. Every time I would take the drone through the bee flyway they would rise up and attack the drone. Needless to say some bees did not survive the rotating blades of the drone. So perhaps that attack is related to noise. In other news... Its snowing here again. Predictions for this storm are another 12"-18" of snow by Sunday night. Sigh. Thank you!
I’ve had them attack a drone too.. but you could be right on the heat. I’m really not sure, but there are times I will be just fine with one or two bees buzzing my veil, but 15 or 20 attacking the camera. The real issue is that once they attack that camera for a while, then the rest of the bees around progressively begin to get agitated and then the whole colony is acting up. We just got a cool front and have overnight temps going low for the next week. Nothing bad by our standard, but enough to possibly slow them down some and maybe slow the nectar production down some. It really was getting to breakneck speed very early.
@@MikeBarryBees It’s going good. I have a cutout Thursday of a hive that’s been in this old house for at least 40 years. They’re tearing it down and asked me to remove the bees before they start. Going to look at it this evening
I like the title. If I go to a bee association and ask a question you know what happens. Beeks line up to tell about what their rivals do but refuse to share actual details of what they do. It is frustrating and is why I quit talking to other beekeepers.
We’ve got that group of folks here and there too. I think the explosion of RUclips beekeepers both commercial and hobbyist, as well as sideliner, is really ticking some of them off too. Secrecy does not make the industry better. Of course everyone will always hold some techniques and habits close to keep a little edge in business, but I figure, if you put out the best product you can and have integrity in what you do, it works out fine in a healthy competition.

5) Place these unwanted Bee Population increases : above a Double Screened Board. The QMP will rise thru the Hive. Keep the Base Colony as a viable Colony. While the 'bees' up high, are 'held' static by the Queen in that basement (!)
You can combine all back to each other, once the Season gets to late Summer. Population(s) gradually lessens as Bee prepare to be Winter ones, no longer the volume of Summer 'Foragers' as before.

I’m sure Fred has taught on this type of split. It’s a very effective and easy way to split. You can take it to whatever level of difficulty you desire with regard to how detailed you do it, but in the end, for hobby beekeeping, it’s very easy and forgiving, and effective. It’s very easy to add many hives without meaning to, but you can always sell excess or even bless someone with the gift of a colony. Splitting is a great form of swarm control. Your type of split there is what I often do. It leaves both hives strong and the queenless hive strong enough to develop a decent queen. If you weren't in a minor nectar flow a little 1 to 1 would help the queenless hive. Have a good weekend Mike.
Looks that way Russell!! But honestly Bruce is seeing a much more toned down yard right now. He is really working hard to get that aggressive trait gone and looks like he’s seeing decent results. I hope so anyhow. Yea, we actually have a really good flow coming since the blackberries are blooming early and they’re blooming heavy. I’ve had to give them 1:1 before, but it’s rare. I like the walk away, if it’s early. It’s all I ever did until three years ago. If it’s late, it takes one hive offline for any significant production, but when it comes to queens, I have to be honest, I’ve never seen what a lot of people have said about inferiority in the queens from emergency cells. I’ve had great queens and bad in both cell intro and emergency cells.
My bees seem to attack my mic's wind screen. The only solution I've found is to use a wireless mic and put it inside my veil. Don't worry too much, Mike, this is reality RUclips, this is what it's about sometimes.
Good morning Brad. The mic they really hate it that furry cover…WOW!! They really go nuts and it gets the entire colony agitated once the guards get agitated. I’ve looked at wireless, but for the old cameras I have, it’s just not a worthy investment.
I’ve noticed when I have my phone on with my ear buds in, the bees get very agitated. There is something to the electronics that the bees don’t like.
Yes indeed!! I’ve had that two. I walked by one day with one earbud in and they got me in that ear.
Hey Mike maybe the bees attacking the mic is the type of mic, I watch Al lot of videos and Jerome bee farm Bruce's bees and the bees don't do that as much, pretty not at all. So maybe it is the type of mic ask , Jerome bees farm about his mic
Very well could be. I know the furry cover makes them even more angry, so could be. Unfortunately with my old technology, I’m limited on mics, but I might need to try a different one.
Use a white or light colored mic/mic cover and get a light colored wrap for your camera. They attack my watch and sting around it because it’s a dark color
You’re right on that. They actually leave the camera alone since it is silver on the front and attack the dark colored mic. I need to find a light colored foam and make a cover and see what they do. The furry cover I tried once….wow!! Should’ve seen that one. It was amazing and completely drowned out any other audio. Won’t ever try that one again😬😬😬
Curious about the bees hitting the camera. Don't think there would be any noise in their audible range. So I'm thinking the camera is giving off a heat signature, and that's what they are after. Cameras do get warm when recording. Last fall I was in my driveway practicing drone take off/landing and general aviation. I was positioned half way between the feeder bucket and the hives. Every time I would take the drone through the bee flyway they would rise up and attack the drone. Needless to say some bees did not survive the rotating blades of the drone. So perhaps that attack is related to noise. In other news... Its snowing here again. Predictions for this storm are another 12"-18" of snow by Sunday night. Sigh. Thank you!
I’ve had them attack a drone too.. but you could be right on the heat. I’m really not sure, but there are times I will be just fine with one or two bees buzzing my veil, but 15 or 20 attacking the camera. The real issue is that once they attack that camera for a while, then the rest of the bees around progressively begin to get agitated and then the whole colony is acting up. We just got a cool front and have overnight temps going low for the next week. Nothing bad by our standard, but enough to possibly slow them down some and maybe slow the nectar production down some. It really was getting to breakneck speed very early.

@@MikeBarryBees It’s going good. I have a cutout Thursday of a hive that’s been in this old house for at least 40 years. They’re tearing it down and asked me to remove the bees before they start. Going to look at it this evening

Beeks line up to tell about what their rivals do but refuse to share actual details of what they do.
It is frustrating and is why I quit talking to other beekeepers.

We’ve got that group of folks here and there too. I think the explosion of RUclips beekeepers both commercial and hobbyist, as well as sideliner, is really ticking some of them off too. Secrecy does not make the industry better. Of course everyone will always hold some techniques and habits close to keep a little edge in business, but I figure, if you put out the best product you can and have integrity in what you do, it works out fine in a healthy competition.
