I just started crying when I heard that after his Father died and his Mother saw another man later on that man beat him severely and he lost his eye sight. Also, hearing that out of respect for his Dad he could not touch his music until many many years. A.J. also lost his wife. A solid CBS Sunday Morning telling of a father-son relationship. Kind thoughts for the families of the others killled in that September, 1973 plane crash: guitarist Murray Muehleisen, comedian George Stevens, Croce's road manager Dennis Rast, manager and booking agent Kenneth D. Cortose, along with the plane's pilot.
AJ, your father was one of my biggest influences in playing the guitar and my learning how to learn finger picking. I remember saving up and I have all three music books for his three albums. I think it's time someone brings Jim Croce back in the public's eyes and who better than his son. You are a great talent and I'm sure your father is looking down and smiling! Peace, Love, Courage from David in Detroit.
I remember vividly the radio announcement the Jim Croce died in a plane crash. This hit me so hard because he was by far one of my all time favorite singers in 1973!! I was 18 years old. Jim Croce needs to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!! So glad his son is playing and singing his fathers music! When I heard him sing I shut my eyes and swear I was hearing his father singing! You have such a beautiful voice!! God bless you always! 🙏🙏🙏💖
Oh man, I loved Jim Croce (still do). When I was a sophomore in HS a classmate and I did a multimedia (1976 technology) presentation about him for a language arts project. We got an A and everyone loved the presentation because everyone loved Jim Croce. His death was a couple of years or so prior. What a loss.
I was laying in a hospital bed after a near fatal head-on collision (July 3, 1973) when I heard the news of his death. I was devastated! Jim's music spoke to my soul more than any musician's had before. His music will live in me and still be here long after I am gone.
I love, love, loved Jim Croce’s music, still do. He had an honest invisibility to the feelings of the soul. What a great tribute to the Musical artist so many of us listened to. I was devastated when I learned if his passing. His son isn’t quite a mirror of his Dad but very close in many ways. I am happy he is honoring him this way.
I Loved your Father! He helped me get through so much as a child and now I’m a senior and still listen to his music! I’m crying right now! I miss him Keep it going son! 🎤👍🏾👏🏾💖
What a heartbreaking story. Jim Croce was such a wonderful part of my early 20s music. Sad that his son had so much tragedy even after losing his father. Thanks for airing his story.
I am sure that Jim would be so proud of A.J. and the man he has become. Hearing Croce's songs again made me melancholy and hopeful all at the same time.
To be fair, Maury Muehleisen had a lot to do with Jim Croce's success. Jim never had a hit, never did much of anything, till he got with Maury. Maury was the missing piece that made Croce a success. Croce knew it too,, and without Maury he would've likely never made it. They were a great duo. Jim was actually Maury's backup guitar player, and he decided to do the same for Jim. He even started writing songs for Jim. Maury today is considered one of the most underrated guitar players. Also, the day Croce goes into the HOF, it will not be as a solo act, it will be him and Maury. It is not disrespectful to say it, but Croce would have been nothing without Maury. Kinda like how Sonny would've been nothing without Cher. Without Maury bringing life to all the Croce hits, we would not know of those songs today. Jim and Maury both lucked up and found each other, and became great together.
As a teenager in the 70's, I fell in love with Jim Croce's hauntingly melodic voice. When he suddenly passed away, it affected me deeply as his beautiful music was still so alive. A.J., watching this and hearing your voice singing your dad's songs was a full circle moment for me and I thank you for that. I am glad that you have come around to performing your father's music. His spirit is so alive in you, his precious son. May the memory of your dad and your beautiful wife, Marlo, forever be a blessing.
I grew up in the 70's, not too far from Jim's home in the suburbs of Philly. I've always loved and appreciated his music, I've found that as I've aged It's difficult to listen to his music without shedding a tear or two, it simply touches your soul. His music can touch anyone, of any age, however, I feel those of us who lived through the 70's have a special connection to both the man and his music.
AJ, I miss your father to this day. He was an amazing musician and storyteller. You are a gifted musician in your own right. I feel so grateful to hear your singing voice and realize your talent. Your dad had such an impact on my growing years and beyond. His music was so different from the other great music of his era. So understandable and relatable that it made it popular.
A true legend and his partner, the late Maury Muehleisen, created songs that have stood the test of time. So glad AJ is keeping the legacy alive while creating his own musical journey.
I recall how hearing songs like Photographs & Memories, Time in a Bottle, and I Got A Name used to make me feel when I heard them on the radio back when I was a young teen in the early 70s; even more so when I heard about the plane crash in 1973. My hope and prayer for A. J. are for the very best in his life and music. It is truly amazing what music can do to a person. May God bless you A. J.
It's wonderful that Jim Croce left a very talented musician son, wasn't aware of his offspring. I played Croce's music often while growing up in the '70s, made big impact on me and was recently listening to it again. Croce left a terrific musical legacy, glad his son is carrying on his tradition.
Your father’s song Time in a bottle, always made me think of my husband, after he passed , I couldn’t listen to it without crying. So it was a few years before I could listen to it again. I first heard it when I was in my twenties when my Boyfriend gave me a tape, he became my husband.

I would like to give this a thousand likes. Jim Croce is one of the best musicians to have ever graced us with a gift beyond measure. I am so glad that his son can now carry on that legacy. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
It is so heartwarming to see A J carrying on his father's legacy. That's an artist that would be well worth experiencing in concert. Had Jim lived, A J wouldn't have suffered that horrible abuse. But he has risen above it. I wish him much happiness and success.
Never knew that AJ went through all that.....how sad. Glad he has found a way to coexist with his father's fame while putting his own stamp on the music world. Loved Jim Croce's music and was so sad when he passed...he was gone too soon.
if Croce was my dad I wouldnt go into music at all. genius is not hereditary. Look at the Beatle kids. impossible act to follow, so I wouldnt follow it.
In my humble opinion, l don't believe that A.J. ever tried to follow his fathers act. Nor did he try to ride his coat tails into fame. l believe he chose music to soothe his pain, whether he ever made it to the big stage or not. It appears to have worked quite well for him because this interview shows a gentle, humble and well adjusted man who has overcome, and is at peace with the torments he's endured, ones that could have easily driven him down even more.
@@nancydemoss2945 Lennon would be an impossible act to follow .... and the expectations would be sky high..... cant fill dem shoes. I would go into real estate.
My parents were friends with Jim and Ingrid when AJ was born (I'm a few years older) and although I don't have a direct memory of Jim, I missed Ingrid very much when they moved to California. AJ is not a PART of Jim's legacy - he IS Jim's legacy! AJ, your father would be so proud!!
His father was astounding. When I first heard j.c. I felt home. His words were like home in my heart. The Melodies were beautiful n original. N his voice was a perfect pitch storytelling in his songs. He’s unforgettable!❤❤❤
Just the other day I walked the isles of the grocery store with Leroy Brown playing over the speakers of the store. In every isle customers were humming, whistling, and openly singing along with the music. After 50 years, Jim Croce’s music and his legacy lives on.
That's awesome. It was absolutely like that all through the 70's. I think of "Leroy" and Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" as being two of the most played and memorable hits. Both still great.
Wow. Jim’s death was devastating to his fans. His son’s voice is beautiful, too. Love to think his legacy is being kept alive. Every song was a hit and still is. Never forget. ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Jim Croce created some of the most iconic songs of the 70s. Who else would write "you don't tug on Superman's cape"? He has been greatly missed, so it's good to hear AJ bringing life back into his father's music.
I’m a huge Jim Croce fan, was devastated by his passing. His music was and is INCREDIBLE. I’ve always known about A.J. But never knew about the childhood he endured and the blindness. That’s horrible. I’m so happy you’ve come to a place where we can enjoy you performing your dad’s music. You’re awesome. He is very proud of you. Keep on truckin A.J.
I was 13 when Jim Croce died. I went to bed and sobbed into my pillow. His music was such a wonderful escape for me, given the turn my own childhood had taken. Such a marvelous talent taken at his prime. Good to see A.J. honoring his legacy - and Time in a Bottle is my special favorite too.
Wow. This really brings back some memories. I was in 7th grade and my Social Studies teacher was a musician and a HUGE Jim Croce fan. Mr. would bring his guitar to class and sometimes during class and often after school he would sing for us. When Jim Croce died the fall of my 8th grade year, Mr. was devastated and many of my classmates were too because we loved our teacher and thru him loved Jim Croce. I'm really happy to hear AJ is singing the songs.
This is the only news program where at first I'm like "who cares?" And by the end I become a fan or have tears running down my face and a feeling of warmth Thank you CBS Sunday mornings show for brilliant weekly programing
It's good to know that AJ has come out on top. His life hasn't been easy but he's at peace & moving on. Truly an inspirational story. Old lady here. I loved his dad's music. It was part of my teenage years & I was saddened by his death. It's wonderful to hear his music alive again w/AJ's voice.
I live around the corner from that farmhouse. The state of PA put up a historical marker to mark the spot. I had no idea so much musical history took place at that little unassuming farm house.
Chills and tears, both happy and sad, hearing that heartfelt music again; remembered sense of great loss at the accident; and hope hearing AJ's story of resilience, and his music. Music truly does run in that family!
From time to time; the good Lord places a beautiful soul on this Earth, and although that time will be short, the amazing musical legacy that Jim Croce has left behind will endure forever. His son is now tasked with helping to keep the memories, emotions and music alive for generations.
When I was 10/11 years old I learned to play many of Jim Croce's songs on my folk guitar. I still play my guitar and his songs -- by memory 50 years later. Thankful for Jim Croce's beautiful and heartfelt music.
I was told by Ingrid Croce that "Time in a Bottle" was a love song that Jim wrote for his son, A.J. I had always loved that song, and when I learned the backstory, it was an awesome and tender revelation. God bless the Croces!
So great of true story; AJ Croce loosing his father Jim at age of 2 loosing his eye sight losing his home to fire his wife to death and now at age of 50 starting to do his dads song. A very talented and special person.
Jim Croce was my favorite singer when I was in my early teens . When the news came out that he died in a plane crash , I cried . A year later I painted a portrait of him . It was the least I could do for the inspiration his songs gave me . I didn’t know how to send it to his wife , which is what I intended to do . I still have it . Thank you for airing this story ! It was inspirational !
He took a lot from his Dad. He got to know him through song as we did. In reading about Jim months ago I learned that he wore a letter to his wife telling her he was cutting back and would not be touring as he hated the time away from her and now a young son.
I understand that memory of warmth of embrace; I could feel the sorrow coming off my Mom when President Kennedy got killed, i was two but I can seeing the edge of the table just below eye level and standing with my hands on her legs while she sat at the table crying; it’s my first memory of life actually
This piece left me in tears for a number of reasons. We lost an incredible artist when Jim died. I had no idea, the details of what his son endured in the years to follow. May God bless the rest of his life with all good things.
i watched this at a hotel close to home having breakfast in the dining room im glad someone turned up the sound im a huge jim croce fan. after i watched this i called my dad and told him happy fathers day
Jim Croce needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The fact that musicians like he and Warren Zevon among others are still not enshrined makes the RnR Hall of Fame lose a great deal of its credibility.

Kind thoughts for the families of the others killled in that September, 1973 plane crash: guitarist Murray Muehleisen, comedian George Stevens, Croce's road manager Dennis Rast, manager and booking agent Kenneth D. Cortose, along with the plane's pilot.
Devestating loss.
Beautiful thoughts v
This is a special human. Wearing his Pop's legacy beautifully - gracefully. I wish him peace and light.
“Operator” is such a beautiful love song. Man, it pulls at the heart. The ability to allow one to move past a lover and accept the void.
Same for me about Harry Chapin
I was 15 when Jim Croce died. I have a vivid memory of the radio announcement of his death. The impression he made on my life is still there.
I also remember vividly hearing the news on the radio. I was skipping school sitting in the car at the park with my boyfriend. We felt so bad.
I remember that day too; I was 9 and I remember crying as I rode my bike home from school that day.
Hello Drue how are you doing?
I Loved your Father! He helped me get through so much as a child and now I’m a senior and still listen to his music! I’m crying right now! I miss him Keep it going son! 🎤👍🏾👏🏾💖
AJ Croce what a resilient soul. God Bless you. Hopefully he's at peace with his father's legacy 💛
What a heartbreaking story. Jim Croce was such a wonderful part of my early 20s music. Sad that his son had so much tragedy even after losing his father. Thanks for airing his story.
hi
I am sure that Jim would be so proud of A.J. and the man he has become. Hearing Croce's songs again made me melancholy and hopeful all at the same time.
Was thinking about this after I watched this story. Well done, AJ.
watching this and hearing the songs brought tears to my eyes
Me, too. Who says grown man don't cry. I am so sentimental now days. Thanks for sharing. @@bernadettepotenti301
We are behind you little Croce brother…. Your father is smiling with pride im sure….
It nice to see the talent was passed on to his son.
Jim Croce was a great musician.
So glad his son is carrying on the music.
AJ was so talented in his own right....hoping Jim gets to watch & listen somehow...✌🏽😎🎸🎤🎼
Jim's son is an inspiration. He's quite talented, in his own right. Plus, if he grew a mustache, he'd look just like his dad.
❤
He's, probably, my favorite soloist from that era. I feel good knowing his son is carrying on his legacy...such a down-to-earth & unassuming guy.
So glad he still has their home. Awesome!👏🏽
Don't forget his 2nd hand man that died that day: Maury Muehleisen
As a teenager in the 70's, I fell in love with Jim Croce's hauntingly melodic voice. When he suddenly passed away, it affected me deeply as his beautiful music was still so alive. A.J., watching this and hearing your voice singing your dad's songs was a full circle moment for me and I thank you for that. I am glad that you have come around to performing your father's music. His spirit is so alive in you, his precious son. May the memory of your dad and your beautiful wife, Marlo, forever be a blessing.
In my modest opinion A J sounds just like Jim to the tee
I grew up in the 70's, not too far from Jim's home in the suburbs of Philly. I've always loved and appreciated his music, I've found that as I've aged It's difficult to listen to his music without shedding a tear or two, it simply touches your soul. His music can touch anyone, of any age, however, I feel those of us who lived through the 70's have a special connection to both the man and his music.
Amen
I agree 💯
AJ, I miss your father to this day. He was an amazing musician and storyteller. You are a gifted musician in your own right. I feel so grateful to hear your singing voice and realize your talent.
Your dad had such an impact on my growing years and beyond. His music was so different from the other great music of his era. So understandable and relatable that it made it popular.
A true legend and his partner, the late Maury Muehleisen, created songs that have stood the test of time. So glad AJ is keeping the legacy alive while creating his own musical journey.
YES
A good friend performed “Time in a Bottle “ at my wedding almost 42 years ago. Still one of my and my wife’s favorites. Croce’s music is timeless.
Your father’s song Time in a bottle, always made me think of my husband, after he passed , I couldn’t listen to it without crying. So it was a few years before I could listen to it again. I first heard it when I was in my twenties when my Boyfriend gave me a tape, he became my husband.
Beautiful. Brings back memories of a year that changed my life. His son does him proud. 🥲
What changed your life if I may ask respectfully?
@@speaktruth9631 A few months later I met the man who would be my husband until his passing in 2004.
@@johannedillworth7413 Thank you for sharing. I'm so sorry for your loss and am happy you had such happiness with your husband. ❤

Love his bluesy sound in that first piece.
So glad he’s making music.
What was that first piece. Can't find it. Loved it

At 28 seconds
Jim wrote & sang great songs. Good for his son to carry on.
Thank you AJ, I hope you've found the joy, sorrow, and love that is your fathers music I had as a young teenager and weeped at his death; still brings tears just thinking of his potential. Great for us the apple doesn't fall far from the tree..
Oh man so glad his son is playing the family compositions. 🤩😍🥰
I would like to give this a thousand likes. Jim Croce is one of the best musicians to have ever graced us with a gift beyond measure. I am so glad that his son can now carry on that legacy. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
as soon as Time in a Bottle played, it brought a tear to by eyes
Time In A Bottle is such a great composition and I got acquainted with AJ a few years ago so it is good to see him embrace this path!
I saw AJ play at a local bar where I live back in the 90's. Between sets he would be out in the crowd. I wish I had gone up and met him.
@@danielkokal8819 Lennon's sons haven't done bad for themselves in music.

Sorry, what happened to you, and the loss of your sight, Your father was a beautiful soul, just like you!
I’m 42 and was fortunate enough to have a father who loved Jim Croce’s music. I love all his songs and am thankful for that.
Great story
That's awesome.
It was absolutely like that all through the 70's.
I think of "Leroy" and Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" as being two of the most played and memorable hits. Both still great.
I feel like I was there! Thank you for this. ❤
Don't worry, songs like that along with time in a bottle will live on for centuries
A.J. your father would have been so proud of you. Rock on A.J..
Thank you for sharing your story. We must be around the same age. I can totally relate.
Thanks for sharing. That is so sweet ;)
This is the only news program where at first I'm like "who cares?" And by the end I become a fan or have tears running down my face and a feeling of warmth
Thank you CBS Sunday mornings show for brilliant weekly programing
Awsome piece! Thanks A.J. for keeping your music !
Me too...Malvern..lol
Many music superstars would meet at that farm and just jam around the campfire. Jim was a binding force that brought them all together.
Chills and tears, both happy and sad, hearing that heartfelt music again; remembered sense of great loss at the accident; and hope hearing AJ's story of resilience, and his music.
Music truly does run in that family!
Totally agree..
Music heals❣
oh man, I got the chills and the tears thru the whole interview,....this is magic.
From time to time; the good Lord places a beautiful soul on this Earth, and although that time will be short, the amazing musical legacy that Jim Croce has left behind will endure forever.
His son is now tasked with helping to keep the memories, emotions and music alive for generations.
Just beautifully said
When I was 10/11 years old I learned to play many of Jim Croce's songs on my folk guitar. I still play my guitar and his songs -- by memory 50 years later. Thankful for Jim Croce's beautiful and heartfelt music.
Jim would be so proud of his boy. He's with you in spirit, A.J., always.
Jim Croce's music helped get me through years in the Air Force. All the best to his son for carrying on his legacy.
Time in a Bottle is a deep song.
Jim would be proud of his son more than we could imagine. I hope he spends that time in that bottle with him.
We should get a music biopic of Croce. I think a real father and son should play them
Genuine nice guy. And I still love his dad's music.

Only one of 2 songs that brings me to tears 😢
This piece left me in tears for a number of reasons. We lost an incredible artist when Jim died. I had no idea, the details of what his son endured in the years to follow. May God bless the rest of his life with all good things.
i watched this at a hotel close to home
having breakfast in the dining room im glad someone turned
up the sound im a huge jim croce fan.
after i watched this i called my dad and told him happy fathers day
He looks just like his Dad and he sounds so much like him too . Jim Croce was the best of the best it’s so sad that he had to leave us way to soon .
Jim Croce. Loved his music.
Good luck to you sir. Your father was one of the greatest singers and writers ever, and you do him well.
