Great video... I tore mine down when I bought it just to make sure it was solid. That last sun gear was a pain to line up...I wish I would have thought to just drop it in like that. Keep on with the videos...
to save all that work and parts, as a welder for 35 years.. I just get a new sprocket and very carefully tac weld the new one on, with a wet rag on the shaft to protect the seal.. and its back to the bush, never so far have had a problem
Great video, I have a 95 max 2 and disassembled trans and found no thrust washers behind planetary gears or drum , no tag on housing , has single o ring on brake shaft and flat bar instead of U channel that brakes attache to so I think it is older than a 95 . Have you ever seen one with no washers . Really enjoyed video Thanks
Some really old T20s from the 1970s were made with no washers. You would have to check the spacing to be sure everything fit tight without washers, if you add washers it won't fit back together. I have only seen one or two of these in my 20+ years so I can't advise much on them. A 1995 Max would have washers and U channel steering, so verify the year or the trans has possibly been replaced.
Hi thank you for answering so fast I need to remove the clutch because it is seized and will not open thank you I’ll try to remove it but I need to take out the transmission from the max
Great video. Failure on my max 2014, after 100 hours of run wear on the internal gears reverse. When I changed to a new one, it took 50 hours and failure again. It's poor quality or incorrect gear adjustment?
I just picked up an old Attex and am going to tear the T20 down because in reverse one lever isn't working and the seals are leaking a bit. If one side isn't working in reverse, could that be a band issue? The adjustments look correct from the outside.
Brandon hi, I am the owner of max 4, please tell me what the factory number is in the lid of the STV box of bearings (support), since it's time to replace them. Thank you in advance.
Brandon I Have a 2016 MaX 2. The side with clutch when engaged in reverse pull stick back nothing. I pulled diamond gear moved shift collar over still nothing. But when I hold shift collar literally a 1/16 of an inch it engages. What do you think is wrong?
I've seen some T20 shift collars and / or drums that are almost completely worn down where the teeth engage. That could be what is happening with yours, since it is a very fine line to get it to hold. Sounds like you might need to open it up and inspect.
Great Video. Live in Alaska, and I'm rebuilding a 99 Max II with my son. Tranmission works but would like to have it rebuilt by someone who knows these. Do you have contact info for your shop? Thanks, Mike Cuber Tok Alaska.
I no longer do any ATV repair, but there used to be a dealer or two in AK. You might check there as the cost to ship to the lower 48 would be very high. Richard's Relics in Indiana probably still rebuilds them if you do want to ship.
I have a 96 Max IV. The right side (opposite clutch) makes a bad clicking noise and won't turn the drive sprocket when turning that side in forward or reverse. I'm looking to tear it apart and rebuild it. What would cause the right side not to turn in reverse or forward and make the clicking noise when I try to make the turns?
The first and easiest thing to check is to see if the output shaft is turning, and just not the sprocket. The sprockets are pressed on and will often strip the very fine teeth that holds them. Other than that, it's probably the teeth that engage the shaft to the drums. Should be pretty easy to find once you break it open.
Thinking of purchasing used max4 6 wheeler 2014 model with 125 hours on it. Upon test ride the belt or tranny is making a popping noise when turning to the left. Does this sound like a transmission issue or adjustment issue. Should I avoid buying this machine? Thank you for any input.
I have an idea on your problem one side shift lever on top of transmission is not engaging all the way. It is very easy to take it off and look at itthat northern machine will have a small angle iron on top loosen two bolts pull up the angle iron and then that shifting mechanism can lift right out of the top of the transmission after you unhook the shifting linkage that is hooked to it the part I am talking about the shift mechanism has like a diamond shaped plate on it and the shifting mechanism hooks to that so pull that pin and then you can slowly wiggle and turn that shift mechanism part and lift it right out of the top of the case then you look underneath that mechanism there will be a small pins sticking out of it about 3/8 of an inch if that pain is worn down too much you need to buy a new shifting mechanism. I just had to replace mine and I bought it from Richard's relics you can find him online I paid $79 per part easy fix. Good luck
HELP!! So I rebuilt the T20 and everything went back together great but now in forward gear my sticks work opposite. In forward I have pull my sticks back to move forward and in reverse I have to push my sticks forward to go backwards! Is it possible to install the band in backwards?? Any help on why its doing this now would be great!
@@MaximumOffRoad I haven't run it yet with the engine installed. Thus was found out by hand turning the clutch after putting the transmission back in while adjusting the bands. Just to be sure then, both right hand bands will go into the right side and left hand bands in the left side correct? Or does each side get a right and left hand band? I'm glad I caught this before running it under engine power.
I have rebuilt mine and the thing is leaking at the center support. I have taken it out and checked all gaskets. All looks good and clean but it still leaks. Any one had this problem?
i did one but it goes together small space tap it goes together but when i snug the case bolts it locks the clutch wont spin loosen it up aliitle and the clutch spins
Usually that means you have a thrust washer that fell out of place, often the thick one that sits on the ring gear drum. Also some older T20s only had thrust washers on one side of the planet gears, if you put one on both sides it'll be too tight.
Hello, I have a t-20 transmission that is slightly different than normal. The drive gears have 12 teeth instead of 15 and the input and output shafts are not of a standard size. I ordered a new l/h output shaft and the inside diameter of the cage bearing was different, The splines on the output shaft wouldn't slide over the shift collar and the main case bearing was wider so the clip slot was covered and I couldn't install it. This transmission has no I.D. tad or any markings. The brake bands I ordered fit fine. I've written to a lot of people trying to figure out some information about this transmission but no luck. It is in a 6X6 made in Mexico. It seems to be based on a Max 6X6. Any ideas or suggestions? Have you ever seen these transmissions used in something other than a 6X6?
mine will only turn one side, checked all of the shear pins, there good , I can hold one input shaft and turn one side or the other, but both will not turn as one unit, this is on a 1985 8x8 any ideas????? help please
Just remove the center bolt and it will slide off, however many of them are rusted/seized on and may require a press. You don't have to remove it to disassemble the trans, and it is often easier to press the shaft out of the clutch once the shaft is out of the trans.
Thanks for this video. One of the best tutorials I have watched. You will save me hours messing around with this. God bless. John.
This is one of the best how-to's I've ever watched. I don't have an Argo, but curiosity brought me down this road. Thanks!

You have installed the bands around the wrong drum. This damages the bands quickly so you should disassemble and make sure it is done correctly.

How do u tell left from right on the shift levers

Do you know which type of transmission oil to use in the T20? Also how much oil to put in the transmission?
I have another video posted on that subject, but it is 1 qt of ATF type F.
Mine has a tag that says dextron 2
I have a hustler 6x6. I need the both shifters. Where is a good place to get them.

Привет мастер. Мы не смогли разделить коробку. Не получилось разобрать, отошла на 1см только и не вышел.
which is better a 9 tooth or 16 tooth
They both work fine, but the 18 tooth is probably better. It's used on the newer T20s and seems to hold up well.
What causes the bigmax 6x6 to pull to the left
When any skid steer pulls to one side it is usually caused by uneven tire pressure or tire size.
Thanks for skipping some steps on the sun gear
I bet if you knew how to measure bearing you would find another source for bearing but then how would that finically benefit you pmsl!
Andrew Andrew
These bearings are modified to fit the T20. There are no aftermarket source of these bearings as a result.
