They keep them in little ceramic bowls outside in Japan. There is a whole 'art' to how they keep and breed them, in freezing winter temps, and it was helpful to me to watch some of those before I got mine. Their water can actually freeze over like goldfish. The plain varieties are getting around pet stores in the US but the fancy ones are a pill to get as yet. There are black, glitter, iridescent, gold, long finned, short-bodied, koi calico, etc, etc.
@@csharpe5787 I think keeping them indoors is the right choice to avoid releasing alien breeds into nature. In Japan, many people raise medaka in water lilies pots outdoor, but I propose a number of ways to enjoy plants and medaka in the middle of the dining table.
I have a bunch of youkihi medaka in a bin full of Java moss and they lay there eggs in it like crazy. Recently hatched over a dozen and have a bunch of eggs still in the smaller bin hatching, seeing new fry everyday is so enjoyful and relaxing. Taking my time picking the eggs out the moss is kind of time consuming but I kind of like the meditative and focus mind state it brings.
Daisy's Blue Ricefish are also a good alternative with the same musical fish system. I like to leave the ricefish in the aquarium for about 2 weeks before moving the fish. Pilo moss is one of the best plants for ricefish spawning.
I've had Dwarf Medaka (Orizias minutillus) for about 2 months in an experimental bedside tank for close veiwing because they are small. About 12 in a 20g tank which gives them alot of room. Uncapped dirted tank with lights & a heater. Started with heavy frogbit cover, which I really liked but now I'm experimenting with giant duckweed. Don't think they'll ever become popular because of their small size and minimal coloration but in the right lighting they have beautiful blue iridescent eyes and a blue iridescent sheen on their body cavity. For being smaller than alot of cherry shrimp I don't find them shy at all. I put all my fingers in the water at feeding time and splash the water. When I look underneath in the water they form a tight semi-circle around my hand just waiting for food. They're a mixture of traits: curious, peaceful, playful, shoaling, loosely schooling, and mainly mid to top level but sometimes around the bottom. Really enjoy your low tech & natural approach to tanks.
I just set up a indoor pond ( no filter, plants only) Got me some blue platinums they are deffinatly the best variety by far. So easy to catch them, they just swim straight into the net
I have taken Medaka out of aerated aquariums and put them in tote ponds with no airation. They don't even care. Right now, I have the youkihi Medaka, and the Galaxy Pearl Medaka. If I had room I would collect more. I like the koi Medaka that might be next.
Our Wifi was quite weak too. A somehow pricey, but really well working solution was to add powerline adapters and just have one with Wifi at the other end of the building. "devolo Magic 2 WiFi 6" is the one we got, and made sure that the router had "Mesh" capability to extend the WiFi, not make a new one.
Thanks for the info! I think I’m gonna get some to get a tank ready for shrimp. Aquarium co op just got some in from Dean so looks like I’ll be setting up a new tank so I can pick some up from them next week.
Sorry I missed the live stream, but I love my medaka. I’m trying to get 2 different breeding groups going. I had decent success with one group this past year
What is your opinion on keeping caridinas with neocaridinas? I saw some Zebra Pintos that I just had to buy. The price was super cheap... :-D Going well 12 days in atleast.
@LRBaquatics Yeah, of course I keep the tank like it is caridinas. I will take the neos out. They are fire red. But they are so many in that 12 gallon. Like 100. And I take this as a chance to move over the best looking red ones. And just spread out the lower quality as algae eaters in other tanks. Thanks for answering so fast. 😊
Yes you can use beneficial bacteria aka mulm the brown stuff from your tank to cycle a tank fast. You wouldnt need much for a 30 gal for rice fish but can use as much as you want. Its not fish waste its what eats the fish waste.
hi @lrb - do you have any killifish for sale in your website that would do okay with a betta sorority & rice fish in 75 gallon? i know bettas & rice fish can live together fine but read a few types of killifish can be aggressive towards betta.
It really depends on the attitude of the fish. Just like bettas some are aggressive and some aren’t. I have a male only fundulopanchax gresensi takwai I can sale cheap for $10 if you want to rehome him and try.
@@LRBaquatics okay! i’d love to try w the 1 male only in my 75 gallon! i also want to add the rare killifish pair you have on your site & place those two in my empty 10 gallon. should i add $10 under the “tip jar” on your website when i place the order for the pair of killifish & i just placed an order the other day i think of rice fish & plants (again lol) - can you ship both orders in the same box?
@@mommymarz yes we will ship them together. Just go ahead and order the killies. What you get charged for shipping will be close to the price of the takwai. Should be $10 for shipping so it will even out

Being your not using lids what about evaporation ? how much water do they lose in a week ? & how low do you let them get B-4 putting water back in them ?
It really depends on the weather and ability to do maintenance. I have let it get lower the. 50% before. Also depends on what’s in the tank. But it doesn’t evaporate fast enough to where I have to worry but does help me reoxygenate with top offs when I don’t do wc’s for months.
@@LRBaquatics The same thing I do with my 110 gal stock tank with goldfish, thank God they don't jump out I have to fill it about every 2 wks & put about 5 gallons in.

In England we kept them i small ornamental outdoor and indoor ponds. The breed readily and are hardy...
It's also illegal to sell them to be kept outside in. Defra who takes care of nature in the uk do not want them to get into our waterways.
@@csharpe5787 Lighten up buddy. This was back in the 80's.
@@csharpe5787how are they getting from an outdoor container into a waterway? Relax. Nobody said to dump them in a river.

Medaka fish !!! I love how more people are getting into it
Medaka's are cool. They will increase in popularity in North America, for sure. The fish room is looking great; nice work!

Okay, I get it more know. Like a chill and very cool fish that can handle a lot of different waters... I have never seen them in Sweden...
In Japan they are huge in the hobby and now trying to breed them to look like koi which is neat too.
@LRBaquatics that sound awesome. Size is hard to see on video. Are they like forktail rainbows when they are adults? In size I mean.

I leave my ricefish in outdoor tubs in Tennessee.
Got down to 5 degrees with thick ice for days ... all my fish survived the winter
They are tough fish!

Rice fish are amazing fish. You can keep them outside too in ponds and tubs they can handle cold water. Thanks for the video
Glad I found your channel! I just got pearl galaxy medaka!! Love them!

Really nice one with creative commons... Thanks 🙏
20:40 they like some current to swim in? I heard also that they like slow current because they are used to not much current in nature?
Sometimes they get current sometimes they don’t. Could be cause the current was new and shiny to them?
stay safe and warm
Great video!
I could see how you would appreciate it 😄

Do you use any specific fry food or do they just eat from what’s on the plants until they get larger?
They will eat what's in the water column but I also feed flake food ground up between my fingers. Very easy fish to breed and raise
I use crushed up tetra color tropical granules. Manny is right as well.
Can you just squeeze sponge filter with fish waste to cycle ur rice fish tank and if so? How much do u need to cycle a new 30 gallon?

I have your multis going on a 50 breeder. do you think rice fish would be a good mix with them?
I had them together in the pond. I would imagine they would be alright with them especially since Multi like the bottom and Ricefish like the top.
Cool, im thinking about doing a nano tank and adding some shrimps you have for sale lol
From my experience they will drop eggs in rock piles without plants. Awesome fish
Good to know thanks for sharing
I was gonna get some today but they were so pricey in Cali
Interesting
