Question: Hi MD😄 I was wondering, the gravel you use in the bottom layer in your ecosystem tanks, do you check it's inert first or do you use anything? Also I really love your videos! Keep up the amazing work!
You should try a large high flow river tank like rachel o'leary's with a large school of Giant Danios maybe with cherry barbs maybe a bunch of bamboo shrimp ... African butterfly fish in the congo thank?! Synodontis catfish in the congo tank?!? Elephant nose fish in the congo tank !? Spiny eel in the congo tank ? 😁
Your videos always make me feel good in these difficult times. Your happy spirit, the positive mood you spread and the beautiful aquariums brighten up the day. They distract from all problems around. Keep it up. By the way: the music you choose for your vids is always amazing groovy.
I actually got into the hobby as some sort of occupational therapy to help with my depression. It all started when I stumbled upon MD's video on the low tech nano cube. Watching it made me feel relaxed, less anxious and in peace so I watched some more videos and got hooked. Loved the Zen feeling so I made my first tank following MD's tutorials. My wife said that when she saw me fiddling with the plants and adjusting my first hardscape I looked like a little child in love. Corny shit yep. Anyways... life is way better now, thanks Aquascaping and thanks MD
Hey MD be careful when removing the floating plants from the ricefish tank, some of the females will deposit their eggs on the roots (some may do it on the java moss or elsewhere). The eggs that are still attached to the female should already be fertilised. For the tank next to it there is someone on eBay selling sexed pairs of a gorgeous variety called 'King Yama Red Lame' medaka for £150! Too expensive for me but would an awesome project for you to breed and do them a scape that does them justice! I'd join your channel as a member just to see you do that haha.
You mentioned moving some plants out of the rice fish tank. Place the rubbish off cuts of plants in a bucket you will get lots of fry. To feed the fry you need nothing but a dirty algae covered mixture of plants floating in the bucket. Seriously a few extra buckets full of rubbish chunks of plants on the floor is all you need do. Out of sight without any work. The eggs in the main tank with adults will produce only a small number of fry. Most will be eaten in the adults tank.
Those rice fish look great. Might be fun to get an outdoor breeding setup over the summer for them, see how many you can make by autumn. They'd look great in that 4ft budget tank, massive impact for a relatively small budget. Mine are out and breeding in a 65 litre muck tub with a solar powered sponge filter. It's not too tough to get going
I’m very new to fish keeping but I have breeding rice fish! Once they take off you can’t get them to stop! I’ve been raising babies by just looking in the plants and if I see eggs with eyes I move them to a 3 gallon bowl I have with a ton of plant trimmings growing in it. When they get too big for the bowl I move them back in with the colony. I don’t have anywhere near 100% hatch rate but I have a steady supply of new fish!
To my (limited) knowledge, the medaka eggs are fertile and just waiting till the mom rubs by a plant or piece of decor that the eggs will stick to. In my experience the fry swim at the surface and will be eaten by the adults immediately. The only time I've seen fry is when I've moved plants into a holding bucket or a shrimp tank without predators, and fry just start appearing. If you move the water lettuce into the tank beside theirs for 10 days (how long it takes the eggs to hatch) and then swap it out with new water lettuce from the adult tank for 10 days you should start seeing fry in the plant holding tank 😍
Thx MD again from Australia, for your knowledge Took the plunge after watching your vids for the past 12 mths and many notes 😁 After 3 mths of planning Day 2 of my 200 Lt tank🤞🏼planted with tissue culture stems and a range of Anubis No fish in yet still deciding what to put in 🤔
I bought one of those razor blade glass cleaners on Amazon and I love it! Super cheap too. Got the idea from a past video of yours. Keep up the amazing work! Love your videos!
Yes, definitely would like to see the high tech next to low tech setup. Just 1 for the fun of it. That's what I did at home, all low tech except 1 to play around with it and learn.
Oh and you should totally make a tank based around bristlenoses. There are some super cool coloured ones and they are my favourite and easiest fish to breed.
I have done so much research in the past about rice fish breeding put a spawning mop in or just use some plants in your fish tank and take them out and check them every week or so and if there are eggs, pop them in another tank
The rice fish hold the eggs similar to how Cory’s do. They like clasp their bottom fins together to make like a basket that the eggs sit in until they find somewhere to deposit them. My bronze, albino, and peppered Cory’s are spawning every second or third day so I’ve seen a lot of their breeding process lol. If the fertilisation process is the same as with Cory’s then the males fertilise the eggs as the female release the eggs in their ‘basket’
Your videos are so uplifting and your tanks are so beautiful. Love your channel your scapes are amazing wish I had your creativity. Congrats on the rice fish breeding for you
Just so interesting to watch what you do, always experimenting and learning, we can all just enjoy the ride watching your videos. I've noticed my rice fish are carrying some eggs but even though the rice fish are the biggest fish in the aquarium I fear they will just eat the offspring.
I check mops and plants every morning around 11am and collect the latest harvest. My Daisy Rice fish give me 15 eggs a day. The others I have are juvenile so will be later when they lay….looking forward to my black, platinum and blue sparkle medaka’s
MD! This is a fantastic video! I love rice fish, and I love this skate! I love the ecosystem tank too! I want to pester you again about doing a hard water tank? Get that GH really high, to see what you can grow? I also recently discovered a really cool kind of aquarium wood called peacock tailwood. It's super cool stuff! Lots of angles, really fine detail, it's really really interesting. I just wanted to let you know, because it's really interesting stuff and I think it's the sort of thing you would love
Yes, please , so a comparison between a High Tech aquarium and the Natural Low tech aquarium, with exactly the same plants and same o similar landscape, so we can compare next to each other the differences :)
While having a low tech next to a high tech tank wouldn't be fair at all, that would be amazing to see what you could do with similar plants in different scapes using 2 different methods. More so the comparisons to the coloration you can achieve under different methods
I love your videos, i have been keeping rice fish for 2months, so far from my experience once they start having egg they will keep having eggs everyday. The eggs as long as they are yellowish greenish they are fertile white if they are white means its not and it will rot, if next to good eggs it will make them spoil too. Is best to remove the eggs and put somewhere because the babies are.. Abit clumsy and get eaten by the adults very easily
Thanks for the great content. Really enjoy the videos and the quality. Can you share some details about your camera equipment? Couldn‘t find that info anywhere.
rice fish breed like guppies, maybe even worse. i have 2 balcony ponds running, i put a group of around 10 adults in one of the ponds with lots of plants/moss, after 2 weeks i moved them to the second pond and in the first hatched ~150 fry.
so i have a couple of fish tanks and they evaporate all the time and it makes it a lot of work filling it up and it makes the room stuffy what do you do to fix that issue in your room?
I once had 4 really old boesmani from a friend who kept them in a 2000l tank. They were nearly 20cm long and I had to buy a 500l tank just for them. Then I once forgot to close the lid and 1 jumped out and died.. He could easy jump over 10cm That's why I never keep boesmani in an open tank again. They will jump out at some day
Hey MD, I was just curious how do u deal with pest snails in ur tanks?? I have set up a 25 gallon with shrimps and betta, I saw some pest snails in the tank. Really curious how can I get rid of them.
i don’t think MD gets rid of them but if they are an issue in your tanks i highly recommend getting Assassin Snails! They eat the pest snails and wont harm your fish or shrimp. They also don’t breed like crazy like most snails do.

The eggs are attached to filaments connected to the rice fish. They don't use their fins to hold them. But sounds pretty similar!

What scraper do you use can you post a link …. Does it scratch the glass I’m so worried about doing it 😳
what's that aquatic plants up there ? thx
Bro you need snails to eat your algae they dont eat plants unless its hella overgrown and snails are super easy to manage.
The rice fish will have eggs every morning during the season, the male fertilisers the eggs as she will brush them off on to plants etc.
Please update on the tuxedo koi guppy. The females were pregnant when you brought them
