All good advice. I am an older person who has been through some stuff. Starting over would be an empty toolbox. Waking from a coma with amnesia. You're not starting over, you're living. Regrouping. Moving on. Most importantly, adapting. The only thing constant in life is change-Heraclitus. Reminding yourself of all the experiences you have had and your tremendous resilience is perfect. When we inherit the trauma of previous generations we also inherit resilience.

Thank you for sharing about binge eating. It's such a hard addiction to deal with because you have to eat food to live. Finding a balance often feels impossible! I'm so sorry that you have to battle this, but I am selfishly grateful to know that I'm not the only one who is fighting this war. ❤❤❤
I used to have an extreme binge and purge disorder as a teenager that then changed to just a binge disorder in my twenties. My relationship with food started to change when I had children though because I didn’t want them to have a negative relationship with food as I did for so long. I started to tell myself and our kids that food is there to fuel our body and brain which helps us to grow and develop properly and our body is something we should be grateful for not ashamed because it allows to function and enjoy our life and it is a gift.
I really appreciate your video today. All the things you said resonated with me. I felt like I'd started over several times in my life. Finally one day I realized I needed to stop thinking I was starting over - it as my life. I'm now 71. I raised my 2 kids almost alone while holding down a 50+ hour workweek at a very physical job. When I was able to retire I'd lost my home to the 2008 mortgage crisis. This year I finally got out of debt with everything except my home of 6 years. Though my health and weight are not the best, getting out of debt and marrying a man this year who has loved me since high school has really helped. Thanks for your insights every week - or whenever you post!

Thanks for sharing. I’ve always loved, my spouse and I have always written things down. In fact now after 50 I will sometimes also copy it again in the back of my journal or on the days page and draw a ⚡️bolt to it to mark how important it is. This just saved us switching laptops as I had the set up information from our modem ( network sign ins and names ) written down on the day we installed that too. I have always felt stuck till I’m in denim for the day. Winter is harder but in the summer it is easy to get up and check on plants outside first thing. I’ve started a 30 minute rule: after I get up for the first 30 minutes ( not hungry due to allergies ) I pick up anything out of place, may sort laundry, do light stretching, check the mailbox etc. I think this helps being a person who never drank coffee ( no caffeine). ❤ Putting on nice clothes makes a huge difference! And a soft easy dress like the one you’re wearing is just as comfy as pjs (maybe even more) but looks like you’ve made an effort. People often compliment me on my outfits on the days when all I’ve had the time/energy to do is throw a dress over my head and walk out the door.

Thank you so much for an honest and relatable video. Recently I have struggled mentally. Like you, I have an alcoholic father but he left when I was young. Long story short, I recently had to pay several grand to save him from homelessness and get medical attention he needed. The state of his health and mind really weighs on me (plus the added stress of money on my credit card from it). When I need a pick up you are the first one I go to for motivation. I’m sorry to hear that you have been struggling with stress. I hope that now that you are settled in your home that you feel somewhat relieved!

I'm forwarding this to my daughter with young children- we've had lots of discussions about finding what I call the "release valve" when you feel overwhelmed- looking at all the things you THINK you need to do, but letting go of what doesn't really have to be done, or done right now(making that birthday cake from scratch! ). That process got me through a lot of tough times at home and at work. I'm an over achiever Type-A- my own worst enemy!!

Logging what you eat is invaluable. Making sure to weigh food on a scale was eye-opening. I was eating WAY more than I thought, esp. if I documented a binge-. This changed my life and has helped me maintain an 80-pound loss.

You are not alone in the food addiction! I have been mostly free for 20 years, but even now I struggle when a new painful situation hits or something brings up feelings from the past. I just remind myself that I haven't learned to cope with this one yet, but I will! When I am patient and give myself grace, the relapses are very short and occur fewer and farther between as the years go by.

Thank you so much for talking about where your BED popped back up and the realities of knowing what you're doing, not having the energy to stop it, understanding the trigger, and then finding your way back to balance. I'm only a couple years out from the deepest struggles with BED, but you described in only a couple well articulated minutes what life with that history and respecting it looks like. Its not something I think I'll struggle with forever, but do think I'll have bouts with it at stressful times that I need to bounce back from just like you described and your way of speaking on it made me less worried about what that looks like. This is so good and the advice is so practical. If I get a text later in the evening and I know it’s not one I need to respond to immediately I just leave it on opened. The little reminder tag is up there until I know I have time to open it and respond when I can. Which saves me the step of writing it down! 😆 I love the analogy of the glass and plastic balls. I read a sentence once that said “when things aren’t adding up, then start subtracting.” Such great advice. It reminds me to slow down, step back, stop taking on more commitments, and to reevaluate everything! And sometimes things just work themselves out by themselves. ❤

Dear Marissa, I felt so related to this video. Family trauma, smoking and drinking addiction, binge eating etc. I feel binge eating controlling and overwhelming me when I am stressed. Before I didn’t realise it. I feel it is a right step toward the right direction. I find weekdays easier - kids at facility, more time to myself, less stimulation, calm down and restart. I often think about how to prioritize the different areas of my life, but I’ve never heard of the plastic and glass ball idea. I like that metaphor. Helps make things a bit clearer. Also, thanks for sharing the life assessment activity. I’m going to try it and see which areas need some attention and where I could lighten the load.

Your video is so gentle - that's what really helps. I summarized the ideas below so that I could look back and choose one or two habits to start with, then add more on a daily basis. Hope you don't mind. 1. take your foot off the gas pedal 2. let the plastic balls drop 3. find healthy ways to cope with stress 4. do a life audit 5. pay off debts ASAP 6. knowing when to cut your losses 7. write it down 8. getting out of pyjamas 9. making the bed 10. picking stuff up from the floor
I love your channel. I admire that you are able to be raw and vulnerable with the viewers. My spouse and I have been working hard and praying off debt as well as living a minimalist lifestyle. We have a goal to retire early. We are currently in our early 40's and plan to retire in the next 10-15 years. Finding your channel has transformed my life. I love your videos. Your home and family are simply lovely. Debt ties us down and removes joy and freedom from life.

As a compulsive overeater, I was SO encouraged by this video. Knowing that other people struggle with the same things I do gives me hope. I joined Overeaters Anonymous late last winter and it has changed my life! I hope that you continue to find healing. Way to not give up! Also the plastic ball metaphor was new to me and very helpful. My phone let's me type a message and "schedule" it's delivery. Eg I can type the message at 1am if I want and set it to send at 8am. I use this a lot because i often dont get around to checking messages until late in the evening. I have an android but I figure iPhone would have a similar function. I highly recommend it if you have issues with remembering to reply to messages the next day!
One way I like to reduce stress in life is do something relaxing after a to-do, and scheduling a reward. For instance, if it’s time to clean house, I break it up into small steps and do something fun or laid back later in the day as a treat. This could be a cup of tea, an ice cream cone, a refreshing walk- do something that helps you wind or calm down after having a busy day. This can be monetary, or non-monetary. But overall, treating myself like a Pavlovian experiment and setting up cues for a reward, as silly as it sounds- really helps manage stress. Also, mindful cleaning. Not rushed around, stressful organizing- just listening to music or a podcast when doing dishes or cleaning a room, changing sheets- helps my mental health feel a lot less cluttered in a clean space. Hope these work for you.

I still have all my stuff in storage until i "get back on track" which is a lottery win away now! I wish i knew if i was going to need the clothes, books etc as cannot afford to replace everything but don't want to keep paying storage if i never have a home to move everything in to... Sorry you had to come back from Europe but i am sure having a second language in their toolbox will serve the kiddos well in the future. Stay cool😎
I love that I can schedule texts on my Google Pixel phone so I'm not texting people back at crazy hours...especially when I live in a different time zone. Also...not inheriting generational wealth but rather addictive behaviors is such a different experience...especially when you come across people who did inherit wealth. Thank you so much for calling out taking care of your physical body is one of those plastic balls. I was hoping you were going to talk about it because for me that’s one that I’m not sure if I should put on the back burner or, if so, then to what extent. Thank you for opening up about your binge eating disorder because I struggle with stress eating and didn’t even realize it until just a year or two ago. Addiction also runs in my family. Alcoholism and we have also lost a family member due to cancer caused from smoking (among losing members to other cancers, but that one was definitely a cigarette issue). I actually didn’t realize how emotional I would feel even writing this comment but I just want to say thank you because it makes me feel less alone and it helps me to think about how I can continue trying to handle this in my own life, as well as how it relates potentially to the history of addiction.

Yeah, first things I pay attention when I feel something is going wrong, is broadly understood selfcare. I make sure I sleep at the same hours, after getting up I expose myself to the sun, take a shower and change my clothes. I pay more attention to food because I tend to eat emotionally. Food must be whole and clean.
@@AtoZenLife When my dad was dying, I noticed that I was gaining weight rapidly. I started observing myself and noticed that I was buying sweets in larger quantities and eating them all in a short time. At the time, I didn't know it was compulsive overeating. I had a hard time mastering it. My weight has fluctuated all my life. I have been using IF for 4 years, and this year I introduced longer fasts. And I finally have the body I'm supposed to have. Healthy, slim. I finally feel good about him. It's a pity that only now, when I'm 45 :)

You might find the book, "Glucose Revolution" by Jessie Inchauspe helpful. It is full of the science and hacks to get insulin levels stable. Both insulin and dopamine play a huge role in binge eating and mood in general. Insulin will also affect dopamine levels (and vice-versa) so getting one balanced will help balance the other. Dopamine is at the root of addiction so getting it back in balance is essential.

And treating the things I don’t want to do as the plastic balls. For me, it is my health. So, my home is clean and decluttered (I love to declutter), but I have gained weight and feel tired a lot because of that. You helped me so much in your videos on emotional decluttering. You are not alone in the food addiction! I have been mostly free for 20 years, but even now I struggle when a new painful situation hits or something brings up feelings from the past. I just remind myself that I haven't learned to cope with this one yet, but I will! When I am patient and give myself grace, the relapses are very short and occur fewer and farther between as the years go by.

Thank you so much for talking about where your BED popped back up and the realities of knowing what you're doing, not having the energy to stop it, understanding the trigger, and then finding your way back to balance. I'm only a couple years out from the deepest struggles with BED, but you described in only a couple well articulated minutes what life with that history and respecting it looks like. Its not something I think I'll struggle with forever, but do think I'll have bouts with it at stressful times that I need to bounce back from just like you described and your way of speaking on it made me less worried about what that looks like. This is so good and the advice is so practical. If I get a text later in the evening and I know it’s not one I need to respond to immediately I just leave it on opened. The little reminder tag is up there until I know I have time to open it and respond when I can. Which saves me the step of writing it down! 😆
I love the analogy of the glass and plastic balls. I read a sentence once that said “when things aren’t adding up, then start subtracting.” Such great advice. It reminds me to slow down, step back, stop taking on more commitments, and to reevaluate everything! And sometimes things just work themselves out by themselves. ❤

Dear Marissa, I felt so related to this video. Family trauma, smoking and drinking addiction, binge eating etc. I feel binge eating controlling and overwhelming me when I am stressed. Before I didn’t realise it. I feel it is a right step toward the right direction. I find weekdays easier - kids at facility, more time to myself, less stimulation, calm down and restart. I often think about how to prioritize the different areas of my life, but I’ve never heard of the plastic and glass ball idea. I like that metaphor. Helps make things a bit clearer. Your home and family are simply lovely. Debt ties us down and removes joy and freedom from life.

As a compulsive overeater, I was SO encouraged by this video. Knowing that other people struggle with the same things I do gives me hope. I joined Overeaters Anonymous late last winter and it has changed my life! I hope that you continue to find healing. Way to not give up!

My phone let's me type a message and "schedule" it's delivery. Eg I can type the message at 1am if I want and set it to send at 8am. I use this a lot because i often dont get around to checking messages until late in the evening. I have an android but I figure iPhone would have a similar function. I highly recommend it if you have issues with remembering to reply to messages the next day!
One way I like to reduce stress in life is do something relaxing after a to-do, and scheduling a reward. For instance, if it’s time to clean house, I break it up into small steps and do something fun or laid back later in the day as a treat. This could be a cup of tea, an ice cream cone, a refreshing walk- do something that helps you wind or calm down after having a busy day. This can be monetary, or non-monetary. But overall, treating myself like a Pavlovian experiment and setting up cues for a reward, as silly as it sounds- really helps manage stress.
Also, mindful cleaning. Not rushed around, stressful organizing- just listening to music or a podcast when doing dishes or cleaning a room, changing sheets- helps my mental health feel a lot less cluttered in a clean space. Hope these work for you.

Thank you so much for calling out taking care of your physical body is one of those plastic balls. I was hoping you were going to talk about it because for me that’s one that I’m not sure if I should put on the back burner or, if so, then to what extent. Thank you for opening up about your binge eating disorder because I struggle with stress eating and didn’t even realize it until just a year or two ago. Addiction also runs in my family. Alcoholism and we have also lost a family member due to cancer caused from smoking (among losing members to other cancers, but that one was definitely a cigarette issue). I actually didn’t realize how emotional I would feel even writing this comment but I just want to say thank you because it makes me feel less alone and it helps me to think about how I can continue trying to handle this in my own life, as well as how it relates potentially to the history of addiction.

Yeah, first things I pay attention when I feel something is going wrong, is broadly understood selfcare. I make sure I sleep at the same hours, after getting up I expose myself to the sun, take a shower and change my clothes. I pay more attention to food because I tend to eat emotionally. Food must be whole and clean.
So critical and food is one of my biggest struggles. 🙌
@@AtoZenLife When my dad was dying, I noticed that I was gaining weight rapidly. I started observing myself and noticed that I was buying sweets in larger quantities and eating them all in a short time. At the time, I didn't know it was compulsive overeating. I had a hard time mastering it.
My weight has fluctuated all my life. I have been using IF for 4 years, and this year I introduced longer fasts. And I finally have the body I'm supposed to have. Healthy, slim. I finally feel good about him. It's a pity that only now, when I'm 45 :)

You might find the book, "Glucose Revolution" by Jessie Inchauspe helpful. It is full of the science and hacks to get insulin levels stable. Both insulin and dopamine play a huge role in binge eating and mood in general. Insulin will also affect dopamine levels (and vice-versa) so getting one balanced will help balance the other. Dopamine is at the root of addiction so getting it back in balance is essential.
