Sea shanties were work songs, to accompany particular actions or tasks on board ship. They could help keep time among groups of sailors, coordinate physical movements like hauling ropes and raising sails, and relieve the boredom of long, repetitive tasks. Most of them were made up by the sailors, pirates, whalers etc.
If Adam can do a harmonica, I guess we shouldn't be surprised that he can do castanets, too.
Sea Shanties were work songs on sailing ships in the day, the work was hard and grueling and these songs set a rhythm to their labor
Can we just talk about how fantastic Adam Rupp is in this?? Did you hear the castanets? I can't even imagine how he is able to do that with his mouth. I love this Shanty so much!!
Please react to their original “Quarantine.” Which is a spoof of Billy Joel’s song “Honesty!” I’m a Registered Nurse and played it for my staff during the height of Covid, just to offer a bit of levity to what we all were going through. Sometimes laughter is truly the Best Medicine!!!
Thank you for your dedication through a very difficult time especially for the medical caregivers! Much respect and appreciation for everyone on the frontlines! Love from Texas!!!
@@donnamoskowitz4978 Thank you!! Still living it, although in my environment, we’ve loosened up a bit because Mental Health is also a factor in FULL healthcare!!! If you can’t remember what you ate for breakfast or that your daughter is NOT your sister, then you aren’t going to understand you need to wear a mask to save anyone’s life!!
Great reaction!! Sea Shanties are real there are two types of shanties they were in tune with Irish folk songs (mostly call and answer )one by workers doing manual labour on ships the second being ballads telling of historical events . Historians have traced them back to the 16th century but flourished big in the 19th. The word Shanty is thought to be from the French word "Chantez", which means sing or chant.
Not only do I play this in my car, I play it in my home and very high volume at times. I've said it's my neighbors favorite song whether he likes it or not. 🤣 They did such an amazing job on this medley. Did you hear Adam's castanets and the sound of the ocean as it sprays the ship. All done courtesy of their amazing beatboxer. Yes some of them look younger but then they all do to me as I'm old enough to be their mom. 🥰🦅
These are each their own songs individually. If you want to hear a good full version of "Soon May the Wellerman Come", Adam Chance does it with Hound and Fox. It's really good.
They do a fantastic job on these but these are all shanties sang by actual fishermen some for 100+ years.
The current TikTok numbers have nearly 400,000 versions and 7 billion views for the Sea Shanty dance which used Home Free's rendition specifically Chance's lead on the Wellerman.
I can't resist the accent, i can't resist the smile and i can't resist the Home Free reactions! Keep em coming!!
Sailing work songs on ALL sailing ships. When a unified effort was needed to accomplish a task, the “Shantyman” would set a beat with the sailors singing, and pulling in unison. Raising and lowering sales, pulling up an anchor, 4 to 6 men rowing a longboat, chasing a whale, any hard job that required a cadence to accomplish.
The slower, more melodic, often with a lonely feel, we’re sung on off time, or below deck, as entertainment.
Curious side note. In the closing days of sail, many of the shipping companies fell under the control of Quakers. Quakers held a religious distain for dance and song, and shantys were forbidden. The work efficientcy declined sharply. You can hear the same method used in chain-gang songs, and Gandy-dancer railroad work songs. A line of men (Gandy-dancers) with long steel pikes would pry a length of track into line using a songs beat to signal a unified push. Check out “Ho Boys, Can’t ya Line Um” as an example.

Thanks for this list. Have printed it out for future reference.
People is an original, also. Every song on So Long Dixie except Folsom Prison Blues and Everybody Walkin' This Land is an original.
Timeless is not a Home Free original. It was written by Mark Nessler and a couple more writers.
@@donnaflynn9615 Some songs are written for Home Free by other writers. But still considered an original.
Sea shanties are not pirate songs, but sailor songs. As in sailors, whalers...
Tim is the one in the Jack Sparrow costume
This is so good. Yes, done during Covid. Tim was actually standing in a boat so he wouldn’t move, afraid he’d fall out. (He was Capt. Jack Sparrow). He stayed down in the depths with those low notes. SO much fun. Did you hear Adam doing castanets in the last song? He’s amazing. Famous Pirates were probably in those days but there are even pirates today…….see Captain Phillips. You have to be careful sailing around Eastern Africa. Lots of incidents with pirates boarding large vessels and holding the crew hostage. May not look like the pirates we think of but still the same type of thing.
Me again. I'm 6 decades plus years old and I remember singing a pirate tune "10 dead men up on my chest...ho ho ho and a bottle of rum" from what I remember! Also there is a movie from 1960 "Boy and the Pirates" where a boy and a girl are trapped on Blackbeards pirate ship! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!!!
Apparently, Chance(the 1st guy to sing) was all GUNG-HO on this compilation, but the other guys were a bit hesitant. Now, the darn thing has 29 million views!!! It’s so great that EVERY member’s input is considered!!
As others have said, a shanty (or chanty, according to some) is a song sung typically by mariners or any group that needed a rhythm to work in unison, such as when pulling on lines, etc.
They weren’t just for pirates. Mariners of all kinds sang them, whether pirates, whalers, merchants, or navy.
How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including sea swells & castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another. They do this medley of songs in their live concerts.
They did this during the lockdown all at there homes in the middle of the pandemic brought to the group by Adam Chance and they slayed it. Great reaction man
I watched a guy react to this medley that grew up in a sea faring community. He knew every shanty they sang!
A great idea from Chance who likes a lot of those Sea shanty songs and in my opinion really has the voice and appearance for them. It is made in quarantine period. Besides each having their great part in this medley, I really love the beatboxing with castanets sound! It was done in the TikTok style, which is why I regularly see / hear come by at the TikTok videos
A really fun one, with great video editing, done during lockdown, is their 'Meet in the Middle'. Also, 'Down to the Honkytonk.' And 'Sunday Best' is lighthearted. All of their recent video releases are originals from their latest album.
Funny you're saying they look younger. Maybe they were getting enough sleep, for a change, being home on pandemic lock down. Now they're on the road and sleep when they can. Road sweet road. 🚌 ☕ 🎤
These songs were not limited to pirates. Several of the ones in this medley are set on whaling ships. Other shanties (songs) originated on merchant ships, naval vessels, etc.
They just came out with a new album with almost all original music. Check out : Road Sweet Road, Understand, what's Left of My Heart, So Long Dixie, all original.
Tim was in the "Cap'n jack sparrow" outfit and, unlike most of their most recent stuff, spent this whole song in the basement at pretty close to the bottom of his range.
You might have been thinking Chance was Tim. Couldn't tell for sure which you were referring to.
You only have about 250 more HF songs til you catch up ;-)
Having fun watching you on your journey.
Love your reaction! I also love everything pirate related! Renaissance Festival in Plantersville? I believe "Everybody Walkin this Land" is an original and a great social commentary on this world that everyone needs to hear IMO! Love from a Texas Home Fry!!! Correction Everybody Walkin this Land is not a HF original but they do give credit to the original artist at end of video!!!
As original work from Home Free, "Dive bar saint" and "catch me if you can" are great, but they really can do any sort of music.
All their original are really good. 😁👍
This is so much fun. I think my favorite part is Adam's castanets in the last song. Really? Really!?
One of my favorite originals by them is Remember This of the Dive Bar Saints album. Their newest album So Long Dixie has 10 out of 12 songs that are all original. Title track is great on that one as is Save The World that Austin wrote for his woman Amberly.
Some of their originals are Road Sweet Road, So Long Dixie, Catch me if you can, Champagne taste on a beer budget, Good old country harmony, Understand, What's left of My Heart, and many others. They are all awesome. Thanks for the great reaction. It was fun
Imagine what Tim's backyard neighbors must have wondered!
Adam is incredible!
Fun times, Home Free originals Dive Bar Saints, Dreamer, Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget
AWESOME Reaction!
Home Free could sang the phone book and make it sound great!
Home Free-"DIE A HAPPY MAN" cover, Home Free-"MARY DID YOU KNOW". LOVE SONGS!
peace
Really great reaction! Can tell you really enjoyed that... I didn't really like your reaction to first because you didn't seem to smile very much but I have come to realize that when you do smile it is super genuine and absolutely Charming! Moore home free thank you!

Sea shanties were work songs aboard the old sailing vessels. They were normally a call and response and sung by the crew to make the onerous tasks like hoisting the sails or raising the anchor more bearable and keep them working in unison. A really good example is The Fisherman's Friends live version of A Drop of Nelsons Blood which is well worth a listen (the title refers to the legend that when Admiral Nelson was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar, his body was stored in a barrel of rum to preserve it until they could get it back to UK - hence if they drank from that barrel they'd get a drop of Nelsons blood!).
I love how honest you are, sir !!!.....that opener you had could have stayed a secret and nobody would have known !!.....LOL......but everybody makes mistakes now and again, and both you and i know there's nothing wrong with that !!....we're just human !!.....LMAO
You can check out Home Sweet Road, a Home Free original
aye aye Captain....break out the penny-whistle and wake up Ol' "Peg Leg"......
Originals by Home Free ? My 1st pick would be DIVE BAR SAINTS, then...What's left of my heart, Lonely Girl's World, Catch me if you can, So Long Dixie, Understand, Save the world, When you walk in, Timeless, Dreamer (there are 3 versions - I prefer the Live at the Ryman with Texas Hill, Champagne taste on a beer budget, Givin' up on you, Road Sweet Road, and a few more
In addition to just being fun and awesome, it’s cool to hear them all in their lower registers. Thanks! As I think someone else mentioned, all but two of the songs on their latest album are originals.
Not just Pirates, sailors on many types of ships (whalers, cargo, etc.). The songs passed the time and kept workers coordinated when working, and were good for morale.
Tim was dressed as Jack Sparrow (Jonny Depp)
Love!!
This is so very awesome! They are so creative. Love your reaction!
I go to a local Renn Faire and already have my season pass for this summer. The workers are amazing and it's one of my favorite places in the world. Pirate Weekend is the most fun for costumes. It's me and my camera having a blast!
This is such a feel good video. Just can't sit still. Only Home Free for me.❤️
The song you are referring to is Summer In the Country. Other originals Road Sweet Road, Anyway the Wind Blows, Love Me Like That, California Country, Lonely Girls World, So Long Dixie, Understand, What We Need is Love, Cross That Bridge, Dive Bar Saints, Everything Will Be Okay, Good Country Harmony, It Looks Good on You, What's Left of My Heart
I laugh at this every time when I see Austin holding his sword like a baseball bat. 🤣
Shanties is common on coastal towns. Every year in Norfolk U.K. we have shanties singing on our quays!
And they did this during Lockdown. Amazing 👏
Adam Chance wrote a Song for Home. Amazing. Dreamer is an Original by Homefree also Amazing 👏
Good Old Boy Good Time is one of my favorite originals before this latest album.
I live on a coast in Norfolk what used to be one of the biggest fishing fleets in Norfolk.. n
Not pirates just traditional in all fishing communities. Every year we have shanties on our quay with shanty bands every year, not just my town all the way up the coast, and Vikings traditions burning torches through the street and burning a Viking boat. You are way of course on this one!
This was another of the 'quarantine' videos. Tim is standing so still 'cuz he was standing in a boat in his brother-in-law's back yard. They are my favourite of the acapella bands and I've never seen a video of theirs that wasn't outstanding. If you haven't seen the "Hunter Hayes Medley" or their latest "Mississippi Squirrel Revival", I think you'd really enjoy them.
There are loads of sea shanties - they were usually navy and maritime creations rather than 'pirate' music. I once had a book of sheet music for dozens of sea shanties (I wish I still had it).
"Road sweet road" is an original. worth a listen and reaction.
Chanties (a chanty is a song - an Irish word?) weren't only for pirates...all sailors would use them to keep a rhythm for hauling sails up or down...like marching cadences for soldiers. But they had a lot of time on their hands so it became it's own genre of music.
They were sung for many sailing years !!!!
A sea shanty is a work song to work together (pull the ropes etc.) they are real, started in the 16th century. Recommend Hillbilly Bone for a good one.
The one when you asked, at about 4:45 with the blue whale T-shirt doing the Popeye squint, is Chance. Tim is in there too, if that's what you mean, in the red-banded tri-hat, puffy sleeves and brown pants.
Love your reactions. Thanks!!
They are all sailor's songs. Up to the end of the wood/rope/sail ships, which would be to the early 1900s, but especially from the 1500s to about 1900. It's less about pirates and more about professional sailors. Some of them are whaling songs (Wellerman), some are military (Santianna) and some are more about various types of cargo ships (Leave Her, Haul Away) .
Most of them were rhythmic songs for hauling large loads on a large rope, so it was brutally important that they all pulled and held at the same times or they would slip and some huge thing would come crashing down and kill someone. Also for turning the big capstan to haul up the really huge chain and anchor - if they slipped the big wooden turnstile would spin madly and just break a number of the deck hands.
Of course, pirate ships had all the same activities and probably used the same songs. It would just be criminal sailors.
During war, many "pirates" were operating under letters of marque sanctioning raids on the enemy ships. Heroes to one side, pirates to the other. But the freelance pirates were pretty much risking the gallows if caught by any country's military.
Shanty is from the French chante/chanter - song or sing.
The "Leave Her Johnny" song is often misunderstood. In commercial shipping, your term ended at one of the end points where they would unload cargo, get new cargo and sail back or further on. You could rejoin or skip off to crew on another ship. A sailor is telling Johnny that he is on a bad ship (bad captain, failing ship, bad first mate or maybe just unlucky) and it is time to leave and join another ship before this bad ship gets him killed. There had to be some kind of feedback to punish stupid captains and poorly maintained ships. The sailors had no real authority, but they could just go somewhere else. The persistently bad ships had a hard time getting a crew, which was a wake up call for the captain to fix the problems. For example, if the captain decides to leave at the wrong time or on a risky route, the winds might stop and you could starve to death while becalmed. Lots of other things could go wrong. The captain had to be smart and look out for his crew. A sloppy captain kills men through mistakes or "mishaps". Was it just bad weather or a stupid time to sail? Is the ship poorly maintained, causing breakages and delays? All really the captain's responsibility.
Pirates, and piracy, still exist. According to Google, the waters around Indonesia are the worst place in the modern world for finding pirates. Piracy is probably as old as boats.
For more very fun videos check out Brother, House Party, Between a rock and a heartache.
We got to go to their concert in Orange, TX last Sunday and it was one heck of a concert. The wife and I loved it. When Tim hit his lowest notes the whole place was rocking. He's from Nederland, TX, just south of Beaumont, which is where we live. It seems were two of the very few in the place that didn't know him personally. LOL Love your reactions sir. What part of Texas are you from, if you don't mind me asking? The wife is yelling at your while I type. These are really pirate songs. These were typical shanties all sailors sang back in the day. By the time I was in the Navy they were pretty much dead. LOL
You bet I do Blasting Loud singing (off key a lot) Too excited to care who hears me !!! WI Home Fry I can always blame it on beer right? LOLOLOL
If you look close Tim is standing in a boat…lol
They are not pirate songs, they are songs sailors sang while tending the rigging. The modern pirate accent is based on the accent found in the west country of England as the actor who first played Long John Silver in the movies came from there and used his own local accent
Chanty from the Fremch chant which is literally song .
Try " Understand" off their last album " So Long Dixie". Most of the songs on this album are originals. Enjoy
If it weren't for the U.S. navy slobberknocking free spirits on the high seas, brigands would still be in business.
A shanty or chanty is just a type of folk music. Mostly referring to songs by sailors.
there is actually a dance to this that has gone viral
1400's Sailor sea shanties..
The word 'shanty' is a variation on the word 'chanty' or chant.
✌🏻😎👍
Poor Tim is stiff cause he's standing in his brother in laws boat, and if he moves it rocks. Yes these are real songs. For some odd reason, I remember being taught Drunken sailor in grade school, Missouri is a long ways from any ocean.
They were younger. Yes shanty is a shack.
You should look up people dancing to Home Free Sea Shanty Medley on RUclips it’s a whole trend!!
I THINK THEY HAVE A PIRATE THING HERE IN ST AUGUSTINE, FL.
Not pirates - ordinary seamen back in the day; mostly British songs because they ruled the waves. Traditional folk songs but at sea.
😅☠️
All but 1 song on Dive Bar Saints are Home Free original.
I love this Voiceplay also have done pirate stuff! try hoist the colours it’s amazing
I liked Black Sails.
Some of these songs are hundreds of years old. Like the drunken sailor.
Manly men , singing manly songs ... oops , can I still say that ? Home Free rocks no matter what they sing !
Absolutely you can say that! Love your comment!!! PC stinks!!!
This was done early during the covid period.
I can sing the "huh!". How'd you like Rupp's "caste-NOTS"?
I love Home Free AND Voiceplay; but the BEST accapella group IN THE WORLD is PENTATONIX!!
YOU NEED, NEED, NEED to react to them ASAP!!
Once you go down that rabbit hole; it will be a loooong time before you will climb outta there!!
They are simply the greatest...
On a whole different level than the others!!!
For a good yo ho try Voice Play, Hoist the Colors. Or My Mother Told Me.
Not sure why you said Tim had good range in this one. He does in more recent songs, but he literally stayed in his bass range this whole medley.
