There are about 12 quarantine videos from Home Free. Tim Foust wrote the first one "Quarantine" and about every two weeks they released a new one that they each recorded separately. Home Free was very inventive with these videos. They had their families help when filming these.

Sea shanties have been around for centuries (think tall, masted ships and working sailors or pirates). The baritone, Adam Chance (first singer here), loves sea shanties. After a popular TikTok video hit it big the previous year (🤷‍♀️ so I hear), he convinced the guys to do one.
Love to see your reactions to Home Free! You’re such an adorable couple with a genuine vibe that’s so nice to see! It’s been fun watching you discover and really appreciate the brilliance of their work, even if certain genres of music don’t appeal to you. For me, that’s what makes Home Free so special. They do all types of music, and so well, that you find yourself enjoying their versions of songs you’ve previously not cared for. As a Home Fry, I suggest you try Helplessly Hoping, Brothers in Arms, and How Great Thou Art for pure harmonies. I know you’ve done Adam Rupp’s “Drum Solo” (that was a fun reaction, too!), but some of my favorites are Butts Remix (spotlighting their funny side), Bless the Broken Road, Folsom Prison Blues, Winter Song, Take Me Home Country Roads, Mary Did You Know, Do You Hear What I Hear, Champagne Taste, My Church, and Hillbilly Bone. Wait to do Mayday until you’re familiar with the guys and know what they normally do and sing (😉). Tim Faust (basso profundo) does an amazing collaboration with Peter Hollands called Misty Mountains (from The Hobbit). I’m still working my way through their catalog, but you really can’t go wrong with any of their stuff. Welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole. It’s deep, but you’ll never want to escape!

I'm quite pleased to see you guys exploring the Home Free repertoire and I think you may enjou watching the Sing Off 2013. Home Free won this singing competition on NBC TV. It was an all-acapella cometition with about 10-12 groups. It would love to see your reaction to twelve acapella groups and you would grow to understand the genre more. Thank you for your Home Free reactions. Cheers!

These guys did wonderful. Tim's bass anchoring everything so beautifully and the guys' solos awesome as usual along with the harmonies. Adam's vocal percussion was spectacular. Castanets! Yes, Adam. You are the man. I love watching you two react, you're so cute.

Sea Shanties were very popular on the Tik Tok platform not long ago and many were singing them, yes it's about the seas and pirates too. Basically, sailors on old ships would sing them while they worked on the boat, it made the time go by quicker and it was entertainment for them.

It's been said by other commentators that Tim's neighbors were probably wondering what he was doing when singing, standing in a boat in his yard dressed like a pirate. 🤪 But I really loved this mash-up of Pirate/ boatman songs. Vocals were fantastic. This is my neighbors favorite wether he likes it or not. 🙂

How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another.

Chanty or shanty is from French and just means to sing or song. So they are sailors songs. They could be merchant sailors, whalers, privateers (sanctioned pirates, sort of), or even military sailors ready to go to battle. Maybe a few are very pirate-y.
Some of the chanties are simple rhythm work songs to help the sailors pull together on huge loads like lifting big spars or heavy anchors.
If they don't synchronize, then they get wrong footed and the load knocks them all over and bad things happen. Lots of ways to die on an old wooden ship.
Some of the songs are for fun after work, usually when they are in their quarters and perhaps drinking a cup of grog.
Yes, Adam Rupp is doing castanets (wooden hand held hardwood clackers, Spanish association) during his percussion.
It is appropriate that the castanets were used during Sant-ee-ana, referring to the Spanish/Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna.
There are lots of forms of percussion and many percussion instruments and Adam can do most of them.
They may layer Adam's percussion if there are too many sounds to do at the same time. In concert, they will run the more repetitive percussion on a looper and then he does the more complicated parts in person. But he records the looped part in concert in front of you.
No backing tracks that I know of.

I didn’t but I love this. Yes, Adam was doing castanets in the last song…he’s amazing. This was done during Covid as were a lot of their songs so they filmed it individually at home. While Home free are more countryish, they also can do a lot of other things. Like this one . Pentatonix also does a lot of different genres and Voice Play are more teatrical. (Pst; They may have the lowest bassinger of the groups. My opinion) My suggestions for Voice Play : The Oogie Boogie song, Hoist the colours, Tennessee whiskey and If I where a rich man (from the fiddler on the roof). But like the 2 other groups , they have a long list of goood stuff :)

    Another outstanding
    a cappella group is Voiceplay.
Try "My Mother Told Me" a song from the TV show Vikings. They also have one from "Phantom of the Opera." Also, "Hoist the Colors" from a Johnny Depp pirate movie.
