      The break was steeper than planned as they had to avoid a flock of birds. But the result was impressive!

    What's the boxy thing you can see outside and below the pilot's side window? I've seen that in lots of ATR videos. There's a shot of it at 2:20 in this one. It seems like an odd place for a pitot tube or AOA vane.

    • @baltimoremaryland7894
      @baltimoremaryland7894 Год назад +8

      It's neither Pitot or AOA vane. It's the Ice evidence probe. if you look closely it carries a light that aids the crew visually at night in examining the probe for ice formation

    Hello Mr. Nordal. I really enjoy watching your videos. I have one question though. In this video at 2:30 (window view) we can see the 2 ATR's flying at the same speed. Taking into account that the camera's frame rate is matching the rotation of the other ATR, I noticed the propeller of the ATR the camera is on is rotating faster (or slower, can't tell). How is this possible if they are flying at the same speed? Shouldn't they have the same thrust setting? One thing I can think of is different propeller pitch but I could be wrong. Please enlighten me

    • @FlywithMagnar
      @FlywithMagnar  Год назад +5

      With the exemption of small airplanes, propellers are operating at a constant rotational speed, which means propeller RPM doesn't change with aircraft speed. Propeller pitch is adjusted automatically to maintain the desired RPM as the load on the propeller changes. On this aircraft, normal propeller rotational speed at cruise is 82%, or 982 RPM. I doubt digital cameras have a shutter speed that matches this.
      Formation flying requires multiple changes in pitch, roll and power. Therefore, the pilot needs a power reserve. This is achieved by setting propeller rotational speed to 100% (1200 RPM). Not only does this give more power, but the higer RPM also gives a more crisp response to power changes.

    • @greekpunisher7166
      @greekpunisher7166 Год назад +1

      @@FlywithMagnar Thank you very much from the response. From your words, the other ATR is on AUTO, while the ATR the camera is on is at 100% OVRD? Is that correct?
