I kinda love that in a sad comedic way. It’s Occam’s razor, but backwards.
Instead of choosing the simplest answer “I wasn’t as good a mother as I thought I was”, it’s easier for her to construct a multi-stage conspiracy that merges higher education, liberalism, mass psychogenic illness, brainwashing, fiscal mismanagement and entitlement beyond reason. Cause… that’s far more plausible than her not being the good person she thinks she is.

23:32 Okay so her point about kids not feeling bad about leaving their parents because the government and their friends and chosen family will take care of them… 100% true in my case. I’m disabled and recently divorced my ab*sive husband. I’ve been homeless since the separation. Still living in a shelter. My SSI was approved after 3 years of fighting for it. Finally went no contact with my family of origin the same month. I was low-contact with my mom for 1.5 years because she would occasionally send me a bit of money (if I gave her a “good enough” reason, and if I was on “good behavior” beforehand, aka compliant & non-confrontational & non-needy). On top of my physical disabilities, I also have a traumatic brain injury and had an ischemic stroke in January of this year. My mom continued psychologically abusing me until our last conversation.
I would not have been able to go no-contact with her if not for being on SSI and receiving services through a homeless shelter. Plus the support of my community, friends, and strangers. I still have a long way to go but it’s easier now that I don’t have ongoing abuse to deal with.

In one clip, the daughter is talking to the camera and Diane comes in with a tray and diverts the attention to herself and does not even know that she upset her daughter greatly. Boomers left us Xrs as latch key kids to fend for ourselves. We never got the emotional intelligence necessary to comprehend the normalized family dysfunction, and we passed it on to our kids.
I wasn't able to recognize my role as family scapegoat until I was almost 50, and the abuse and disregard was as strong as ever. Once I understood that there was actually A NAME FOR THE DYSFUNCTION, and after a lifetime of trying to ignore the dysfunction in the name of love, I knew my only hope of peace and sanity was to step away from the dysfunction. The main difference with my situation is that, in 8 years, no one has ever bothered to ask me why, or what's wrong. It's essentially self-orphaning, but it feels more losing everyone and everything and there is definitely an entire mourning process. And it fucking HURTS that they can just "let you go".
8 years of mutual silence kind of solidifies the notion that they KNOW what's wrong. I saw a quote that resonates...
      "I was my mother's scapegoat.
I morphed into my family's black sheep.
Eventually, I realized that the problem was not what kind of goat or sheep I was,
but rather, it was the sickness of the herd itself"

That golden age only ecisted for a privileged few. It was propaganda, and generational theory is a marketing tool, that tries to predict consumer behaviour. This theory doesn’t take into consideration life experience and personal circumstances, and tries to reduce people to stereotypes, who lack individuality.
‘Generational theory is the idea that there are generations has cycles that replace one another approximately every 15-25 years. The authors of this idea are historian William Strauss and writer Neil Howe. The essence of the theory lies in the fact that people born in a certain period of time are influenced by socio-cultural factors, important world events, and a particular stage of technological and economic development at that time. Because of this, they have similar values, principles, behaviours and even thinking patterns.
From a marketing perspective, generational theory can explain how clients’ values are shaped and what patterns of consumer behaviour they are inclined towards. This helps brands to segment customers and choose the right marketing strategy for the generation of their target audience.’
This is a pretty good article on how it’s a grift.

I hope they have a way out of this, but.... It does feel like it might be too far gone, that now, if the daughter even gave her a chance, she'd use it as a proof of concept for her "having stuck it out" and "her daughter coming to her senses", and she would not be likely to learn much from it (except that next time round, she'd be double the martyr).

Everything about the horrible algorithms based on negativity, people being extremely toxic, getting riled up, the anonymity making people feel comfortable in saying whatever horrible thing they want to others that they would never say in real life, addiction, entitlement, misinformation...
And then she just fully is part of all that as well. And she is completely unaware of it. She also doesn't seem to notice it's social media that makes her feel so entitled to keeping her kid in her life. Back before social media, it was normal for kids to grow up and just move away and the parents just wouldn't see them anymore or only very rarely on special occasions. If you go back a couple centuries, you could straight up move a town over and make a completely new identity because nobody would be able to contact you or even keep track of you. And then you got immigration stories. People would move to a new continent for a number of reasons. And those people were, in all likelihood, never seeing or hearing from their parents ever again. It's not an "estrangement epidemic". It's an epidemic of entitled parents thinking social media should give them access to their adult children forever.

I'm Gen-X and I am estranged from my family. This isn't about being from different generations, but the inability to continue with relationships that create chaos, trauma and pain. Often after decades of trying to get parents to respect the personal boundaries their children are entitled to. Diane needs to accept that though she does not accept her daughter's reality, her daughter's experience of her is so negative that she needed to do a cut off. Diane is so self focused that everything is about how *she* can feel better. Not how she can grow and understand what was boundary violating for her daughter. If she could do that, perhaps her daughter would decide to reconnect at some point. Then she could work on rebuilding trust.
Unfortunately, instead she's chosen to twist herself into a pretzel trying to sociologically/anthropologically defend and justify her behavior and distance herself from personal accountability. I mean, she can't be responsible because sociology. Or societal problems. She may be more intellectual than my father, but she's just as incapable of ever admitting mistakes and instead projects them onto someone or something else. Her inability to accept that her child is a separate human being and accept them for themselves. That she cannot even see her bigotry is a dealbreaker b/c it inherently does not accept people for who they are. She should be in therapy, not lecturing people on a topic she does not understand.

I know I'm late to this party, but I've watched a number of Diane's videos, and am really appalled. I'm a Gen-Xer too, and I went low contact with my mom and I practiced grey rock (even though I didn't know it was called that at the time). Going no contact is not a new phenomenon, but one thing that has changed is technology: phones, internet, social media. It is almost impossible to get away from someone now, but in the past (if you had the means), you could move away, with no address or phone number, and people wouldn't be able to find you. I know people who moved to the other side of the country or just out of town and sent a card at Christmas.
Obviously, going no contact is probably more common (like people understanding they are trans or gay or bi) because there is more information out there for these people and you can find groups on the internet and so on.
On another topic: Diane is so far down the right wing rabbit hole, it's not funny. So much of what she talks about is not new. And her understanding of the generations is ridiculous. I'm a college professor and I've taught from Gen X and millennials to now Gen Z. There is so much more in common across generations than there is different. It's true, values have shifted a little, but I think in a good way: caring about our life (and not just work/the economy) and our mental health. These are improvements.

...Can you imagine how terrifying she must have behind closed doors? My god, the things those poor kids have been subjected to. Diane is like my mom's id, she's everything my mom wishes she could openly say but doesn't because she wants to pretend to be a good person.

0:10 wait. How are 29% of people reporting being estranged, but 27% have cut someone off? The number of estrangement should be at least double the number of people cut off, right?
Either a huge number of people don't know they're estranged/don't anonymously report as being estranged, or a ton of people are cutting each other off.
Or, perhaps the people who cut someone off aren't considered estranged for this study?

i'm gen x, my partner's a millenial & my kid's gen z - *all* of us think dianne's a narcissist 🤣 i'm estranged from most of my relatives, my parntner & kid are estranged from their dads - because they're all selfish & self absorbed people like dianne 🤔 the three of us are incredibly loyal to those we care about & though we have similar values (relatively "left leaning" though none of us are "highly educated" partly as not feasible financially) we're also able to respect our differences 🤷
kids did not ask to be born so do not owe their parents *anything* - *ideally* grandparents help with grandkids so parents are more "productive" to take care of their parents & kids but *no one* should stay in unhealthy relationships! i stayed in contact with my parents far too long partly as i worried about the example i'd set for my kid but my partner helped me feel more confident that how i treat my kid's more important & they've been proven right despite not having their own kids
those of us who aren't as selfish & self absorbed as dianne can actually try to put ourselves in others' shoes to understand where they're coming from, even if we haven't lived long enough to climb the mountain or whatever the bs attempt to sound like she's enlightened instead of just deflecting was 🙄 it's always so cathartic & validating to watch others respond to her bs so thank you!

My dad told my granny if he let my poppy treat his kids like he was treated as kid she would never see us again. Given that my poppy "only" said things wishing me harm/death/permanent illness and we were able to see them all the time as a kid I can assume that my dad's childhood included more beatings. My granny was NOT going to not see her grandkids so she whipped my poppy into shape. I still didn't turn out good enough for any of them to still talk to me (I'm only really upset about my granny). I rarely saw the grandparents on my mom's side of the family (they disowned me a longer time ago). You set the right example for your kids by showing them no one deserves abuse. You sound decent enough that I don't think your kids will become estranged from you. Regardless, you set the right example and no one deserves to be abused, including you.

I don't read it as only people feel more free to tell parents they were bad parents for the reasons you mentioned. I also think she is saying people have options now. They don't have to stay in abusive situations, like how divorce increased because women could open bank accounts, so we should take away that right to maintain the traditional family.

If part of her thesis is based on Strauss and Howe's theories then it's already on shaky ground. Their work is and has been highly contested by historians and sociologists. They essentially came up with this idea of "turnings" which the generations would respond to differently, then looked for events to support it. So, cherry picking basically. One of the main criticisms against their work is that they oversimplify history and overlook the fact that a generation of people is not a monolith who all think and behave the same.
I imagine this woman likes their ideas because it allows her to excuse herself by chalking up her daughter's legitimate complaints to mere generational differences. Gross.
ETA: the idea that baby boomers grew up in optimism and prosperity in "two parent households " is a great example of the oversimplification of history that Strauss and Howe engage in. Because that was only true for white people, and even then only middle class and above. Characterizing an entire generation by what only relatively few of them enjoyed is not the way to conduct historical study, in case that's not obvious.
That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if this woman was deluded enough to believe that the 1950's were actually a golden age for black people in America, so...

I don't know why your video popped up for me, but now I can't stop watching them and this looney toons lady. I'm a Gen X-er. We don't claim her.
I'll admit that the majority of us were raised feral. Most of us got spanked/beaten, yelled at and at the same time forgotten about by our boomer parents. But it's not an excuse to be a shit parent. My suspicion is that a lot of these parents with estranged children are VERY religious and have very strict homes, allowing zero tolerance for differences while also expecting complete obedience. That happened in my house and in my cousin's homes. It led to many of us leaving home at young ages and having little to no contact with my parents until they changed. Me and my 4 siblings broke my parents down. They finally "tolerate" our behavior for the sake of having a relationship. This lady will not bend. She even admitted that she would not apologize for her part in the estrangement.
As a mom, I want to hug her daughter. It makes me so sad to read so many of these stories. I'm also sorry you had shit parents. Truly. Nobody deserves that.

That's the biggest problem with this parent and parents that has a similar views of how they should handle their children, where group cohesion is honored instead of encouraging them to develop their personality. Group cohesion in most cases goes hand in hand with a cult like environment. She is not a parent, she is a cult leader and because her grasp is weakened more and more and she is mad...
She thinks "wokism" is the thing that made the daughter cut off her mother but in reality it was probably the intolerant environment at home that made her daughter go no contact

Then *just maybe,* she'd learn how to take a good look in the mirror, understand how important "self-awareness" and "personal accountability"is. She may even begin to understand how to empathize with her daughter, and finally get on the pathway to healing their very broken relationship.
Unfortunately, though, there's very little evidence that people with cluster B type personality disorders, in her case (and in my humble opinion) Narcissistic Personality Disorder, can be "cured".

That she is making this a generational issue is just another self-focused assumption. I'm in children of narcissistic mothers group and there are people of all ALL ages. In historic generations, dissenting kids in America got shipped to asylums for the rest of their life... in her generation they sent home enough extra meds for mom to get the kids to sleep too, and childrens doses weren't, by practice, recorded. I wonder if there might have been some emotional development missed en-mass by the boomers from unknowingly being raised on these medications in early years.

The "turnings" theory is extremely cherry picked. Some 'peaceful' periods have war and some 'war' periods have smaller conflicts than so called peaceful times. Also Steve Bannon loves this theory. You're in great company Diane.
Her calling world war 2 a global war is incredibly eurocentric. Diane probably wouldn't like to know that entire continents think she's an idiot.

Just commenting in the middle of the video, because the way she talks makes me so mad and I need the break.
I'm not surprised that she thinks individualism is the bane of society. She doesn't come off as a person, who can handle people havin oppinions and needs that don't align with hers.
For 'the liberals', it isn't an us vs. them problem. They just want everyone to be able to live their own private lives the way that makes them happy. She and people like her then turn that into a problem, becausse they can for the life of them not respect those who are different from them and just leave them be.
Just like she can't leave her daughter be, which is probably why they are nc now.
And if she was so against individualism, why doesn't she just pick a random stranger who aligns more with her worldviews and simply replaces her daughter with them? Maaaybe, because her daughter is irreplacable, because she is an individuum? Shock!
Edit: I can't believe she got far worse after her anti-individualism point. I can't!
    Also!
I hate, hate, hate her quirky little 2015 YT sound effects!

This idea of generational changes completly ignores generational trauma. It's not that strong men create good times which creates weak men. Oftentimes those "strong men" are traumatized individuals who had to use maladaptive coping mechanisms in order to survive. They start the rebuilding process but they're simply unable to finish. They don't have the time nor resources to achieve it. Only the second or third generation can more or less safely deal with it
In the past it meant going to war or something. Today we all have depression
Besides if you believe in the cycle then gen X were the "weak men" who created bad times for millenials and gen Z

In freshman level sociology class, we learned that there is a difference between how individuals and populations can influence big societal change. Wherein, the individual alone cannot make that change for the population. Only when populations band together does the potential for change arise. She's viewing her INDIVIDUAL relationship with her daughter as societies problem to fix, which does not even mesh in terms of sociological thought. Btw, sociological thought here is obviously not the correct response on her part, but shes bringing it up so...Not to mention shes claiming that society is to blame for her daughters individual choice to leave. Good god I am never going to understand the insanity behind Diane. Wishing the best for her daughter, she did everything right in my book.
