  • Asics NOVABLAST REVIEW - After 200 Miles - today I am delighted to give you an update on the asics novablastafter 200 miles! Yes we have reached another milestone in the asics novablast and with it being my "go to" running shoe at the moment, its not been hard to gravitate towards it and rack up the miles. Today I wanted to give a quick "wear and tear" update along with a performance update in the asics novablast. I wont give any spoilers away, you'll have to watch to find out but what I will say is I will be taking this shoe all the way until I cant run in it any more!
    Let me know in the comments if you got the shoe? where how many miles you have in it? and how you are finding the shoe after that amount of mileage?

    Great update. Thanks Andy! Definitely a no brainer for my next daily trainer purchase. Really value the fact that you are reviewing shoes after a reasonable number of miles. 50 or 100 mile reviews can’t really judge midsole reliability.

      Thank you! Yes it’s very annoying I can’t ramp up the mileage in more shoes due to me testing so many but when I find a gem like this I’ll give you all regular updates as the mileage goes up as best as possible 👆

    Bought on the back of your enthusiasm for this shoe. Love love love it. So far 50 miles. Got a 5k PB and a fast 17 mile run to name a few. Currently doing the 4x4x48 challenge, and this is the shoe I save for the night time runs. Gives me something to look forward to. Thanks for helping me find my perfect shoe. Subscribed on the back of this. ASICS, sort Andy out with another pair!

    So, I bought the Novablast after watching your first video on it. What a cracking shoe! 👍👍👍

      I’m 6ft 1 and 13st 7lbs. I ran in the Novablasts two days ago. Twas my first time ever to run in a soft high cussh shoe. I loved them but it’s gonna take some getting used to. I felt a little unstable on uneven grass. But road it’s lush

    You made us want it even if we didn’t need it Andy!! I’ve put 100km on mine in 10 days and like you said, I have had to force myself to reach for any other shoe! They can just sometimes be slightly slippery in the wet (I tumbled this morning trying to avoid a cyclist on the footpath). They are the best shoes ever for running back down hills! You definitely gotta contact ASICS!!

    After I changed the laces to some fat ones, it became a great shoe.
    Only real bad issue is, that my achilles pain came back after some runs in these.

    I’m a fan of the novablast. I purchased a pair fairly recently on your recommendation. I’m pleased on your review they seem to be holding up well 200 miles in. I’ve been using 5-10k distance. Maybe 40k so far in mine. Part of me wants to park them up for the hope of races and park runs later in the year 🤞. I struggle with easy runs with them - just a ‘lively shoe’ I would describe them. I also have the ASICS glideride which I’m equally as happy with, I use them for longer runs and have seen immediate improvement in times and legs much fresher post run and the following day 😃.

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад +1

      That’s awesome! I’ll be honest I could race in mine too despite then being a heavier shoe. I would consider running a marathon in them 🤷‍♂️ I’ve not tried the glideride but again heard so many good things!

      Plz describe the diff in the Glideride and Novablast. thx

    • @FenboyTim
      @FenboyTim 4 года назад +1

      filoIII FOD runner has some great reviews of the novablast. The glideride feel more heavier. They are more supportive in the heel area and feel more solid and smooth. In my opinion these are more suited for longer distances and eat up the miles with the rocker type motion. Great efficiency. The novablast are such a lively, bouncy type of shoe. They’re enjoyable to wear and run fast in. On ground impact I think my feet are possibly falling in or away, not 100% sure. The novablast are the better looking shoe, esp the blue version.

      They are revolutionary from asics aren’t they! I used to run exclusively in asics for the first 3 years, you can find some really old review videos on them... anyway I had to ditch them because of exactly that, clunky and old.... however this is hopefully the start of something new 👊

  • @jerryang17
    @jerryang17 4 года назад +2

    I bought the NovaBlast after watching your review (and a few other reviews on RUclips)...
    I'm just starting to run as I have put on 8kg and become overweight from some meds I'm taking. I am 175cm tall and weigh 74kg. As a beginner, I've clocked in 23km in the past 10 days.
    (I used to run a lot some 10 years ago, running 4 marathons and 3 half-marathons. I have stopped running about 8 years ago and lost a lot of fitness since.)
    My thoughts on the shoe? I love how cushy the midsole is, without feeling too squishy. I found that the softness and relative instability of the midsole, coupled with the way the upper is designed, has caused my foot to roll inward as I strike the ground. My foot settles on a position that is not quite in the centre of the shoe, but tends inward. My toes and forefoot would sit perfectly in the toe box area, but my heels would slant inwards. This causes some discomfort in my inner foot, from the arch area to my heels. I try to adjust my feet every now and then during my workouts, but they just won't stay centred. I've never had a problem like this before. My previous Asics shoe was the Gel-Landreth 7 (which is supposed to be a neutral shoe too), and it was a lot more stable. I don't usually over-pronate and I don't think I have flat feet, though my arched are slightly on the low side.
    Would like to find out if any others have experienced this issue too...
    Apart from that, the shoe is great. I agree that the materials used are nice and of good quality, and the FlyteFoam Blast really does feel good.

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад

      That’s great to hear you’ve started running, great job! You’re not the only one to report that, there were a couple of others across my novablast videos that mentioned this... sadly it doesn’t seem to work for everyone. Have you tried using the extra lace hole at the top to get your foot a bit more securely into it? That can sometimes help stop your foot moving in the shoe and might make that tiniest bit of difference to help stop it rolling?

    • @Tintenfisch19
      @Tintenfisch19 4 года назад +1

      Hi there, having the exact same issue like you. I also do not overpronate, am always wearing neutral shoes without any issues, but when wearing the novablast for running, my foot felt just so unstable. I couldnt handle it at all, sadly. :( I think the novablast just isnt for me. I will stay with the brooks ghost series and saucony ride.
      However, I will keep my novablast as a shoe for my free time, since it just looks so awesome and special :) people keep asking me what kind of shoe that is I am wearing haha

    I have enjoyed watching your reviews on these, so much so I decided to take the plunge. I started off running in Asics and then switched to Nike in July 2017. My last pair of Asics were the first Dynaflyte's, I had 2 pairs but had to retire them early as the heel collar wore through very quickly. Since then my running has dramatically improved so hopefully it was down to me more than the shoe, I did see you had slight wear in the same area so it will be interesting to see how that develops. I am aiming to put quite a few miles on them but I have quite a new rotation so it could take a while. Good to hear you are getting good mileage in, I have taken the same approach so when racing starts again I am good to go. Look forward to future videos on the Novablast. 👍🏻

      @@TheFODRunner The FOD Runner thankyou. I fell victim to a very poor gait analysis when I first started running, I was sold GT 1000's. I'm one of the people who bought this shoe on your enthusiastic recommendation. I have 97 miles on it now and really enjoy it. But I have a narrower foot, which kind of swims around in the toe box. I wish I had gone down a half size. Also I'm prone to heel strike in shoes with a 10mm drop like this one. So for both of these reasons, I don't think I'm able to get the full benefits of its fantastic midsole. I haven't taken it on any faster or long runs but use it on all my shorter easy/recovery runs and sometimes on mid-distance, easy paced runs. So it's mainly functioning as a forgiving easy run shoe for me. It seems very durable, but if I ever manage to wear it out then I'll consider getting another pair a half size smaller.

    Amazing review Andy! This kind of info is very important and hard to find among the reviews from other content creators; the most part of them never the pass the 100 miles (I would think that they don't even go farther that 50 miles), which doesn't give you a real image of the shoe's durability and mainly how it will change and behave over a proper amount of miles... a shoe that feels great only for the first 70 miles is a total waste of money since there are so many good options in the market nowadays. Thank you for giving us this kind of content and please keep doing it. Greetings from Bolivia 🇧🇴

Also set PBs for 2 miles, 1 mile (6:48), 1k and half mile. These shoes are incredible, I can see now why you’ve been so full of praise for them.

    Hi. When you first reviewed these shoes i wrote on your vlog that you had convinced me to buy. But as i was about to pay i pulled out at the last minute and bought the Infinity React. I had enjoyed such a good experience with the Peg Turbo and the Vomero that the Marketing Injury Hype got me. I ran 140 km in them; but they were so unstable in terms of heel lock down and slippage (widely reported) that i got achilles problems on both feet twice. I actually loved the ride of the shoe but they were becoming lethal so in the bin they went so i wouldnt be tempted to run in them again - £150 up in smoke.
    And last week my Nova Blast arrived. I have done 2 runs of 10 km in them - did 5 x 20 secs fast on one run. What an amazing shoe - reminiscent of the famous Clifton 1 my favourite running shoe ever (which they say was like the Rincon). Really solid fit and feels very stable to me and not as squishy as people seem to say. I just love this shoe - Amazing. As you say I think i could use this for everything. Maybe better than the Clifton1the finest compliment i can give to a shoe.

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад

      It’s funny, the infinity react has got a mixed bag of reviews but I was switched off when Nike claimed they prevented injury, or at least helped prevent injury. How can a shoe change the natural mechanics of a human? As how you run is more of a detrimental factor to how you get injured, just look at the b-roll kf my right foot kicking out, that’s weak glutes and previous football ankle injuries... a shoe won’t stop that. I’m really glad you’re loving the novablast, I’ve heard so many amazing things about the Clifton 1, I’m gutted I was never able to try it!!

    • @craigtsmith6957

      @@TheFODRunner Well they re-released the Clifton 1 for a limited batch. I didnt try them and they didnt get good press - but the Ginger Runner feels they were not the same shoe. I had a major capsulitus on my second met head that flared up on my way to the Zurich Marathon - i couldnt walk without pain. I bought the Clifton 1 at the exhibition and ran a Boston Qualifying time!

      Yes I saw the rerelease wasn’t a big hit. I wondered though if that was more because time had passed and that magical feeling it once had was surpassed by other shoes so when people went back to it they weren’t as blown away as before. Always risky rereleasing things! Wow fair play to you, running a BQ with that pain 👏 must of been good shoes!

    Although I do not find them to be the #1 shoe in my lineup these are really nice shoes for long runs. Very soft to say the least. Maybe for someone who runs as fast as you on 'slow' runs these work better? These are by far the largest shoes I own. I do find the instability at times, cornering for certain. Another great video Andy, I recently bought the novablast after watching your review. I've only got 18 miles in mine so far and have enjoyied the cushion for daily miles. I have a narrow foot however and feel that they dont give the best fit possible so maybe something to improve. Also the upper material seems abit cheap to me. Looking forward to getting more miles into the shoe and cant wait for the metaracer to be released later this year. :P

    Hell yeah, upgrade it to a racing shoe, that would be awesome. Like a few others here, I too bought this shoe on your first run recommendation, and it really loves to run fast. I've only got 14k on mine because I was sidelined by ITB issue not long after, which has resolved but I am building back my distances very conservatively. And because this is a shoe that will be best for tempo runs ( for me anyway) , the Novablast are waiting for their days to return ( soon!). In the meantime, my NB Fuelcell Rebels are doing an excellent job even at my slow paces. I look forward to really giving the Novablast a full run for their money. It is good to hear that they are very durable too.

      Haha Bigfoot runners unite 👊 I sadly haven’t tried the ride 13 but the novablast will be softer and more stack height I think. It’s super soft, beyond anything I’ve tried cushioned wise but some people can find it a touch unstable due to the high stack + softness. I don’t though, it’s just perfect!

    Only recently found this channel and loving the videos and reviews. Quick question on the Novablast - from a stability perspective how would you compare it to the Rincon and 1080v10? I’ve read some reviews complaining about how stable the Novablast’s are. Also if I may how is toe box space again compared to Rincon and 1080v10? Thanks so much!

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! Yeah some people report it to be unstable, I can understand with it being softer foam but I think if you have a wider foot like me it’s not really an issue. The thing with the novablast is the toebox is quite roomy so narrower feet can feel like they’re swimming in it. The 1080 is more stable for sure as it has a wider base

      Thank you! Good comparison, the turbo 2 is light and snappy I found.... I did struggle sometimes at higher paces in the turbo 2, it did feel a bit sloppy but on the whole it’s a great shoe. This however for me is another level. I wouldn’t put it on the same category though.... this is much bigger stack height and heavier.... however for me it wants you to move and I’ve done some workouts in this shoe on the channel that for me, prove it’s versatility

    great stuff! was looking for a potential replacement for my rincons. over 600kms on them already and yes they are flat. so usually what i do as a dopamine reset is to run in my asics kayano 26, then the rincons will suddenly have life again, albeit not much left. Have ran in these during an expo on the treadmill and set a new PB speed of 18kmh which ive never achieved ever in my life before. only thing i felt was that im a size US 9.5 on the kayanos and the evo ride, however on these i feel abit more room in them than usual. do you feel the same? I'm a moderately wide footed person and most shoes like the pegasus or any flyknit nikes or adidas ultraboosts dont fit me.

    Hi andy a fairly new subscriber here, great videos i really enjoy your content. One thing which just puts me off the novablast is the stability. What would you say for it as i would love to get a pair based on your reviews? As someone whos ankles tend to roll outwards im worried it is too soft underfoot & will lead to issues for me using them because of this. Thanks.

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад +1

      Hey! Thank you for subscribing! I’ll be honest I only ever notice the lack of stability when I go round tight corners.... other than that I find it absolutely fine but I know other people can find it a bit too unstable 🤷‍♂️ if you notice in my intro clips my right foot turns out and when I land it very slightly caves inwards so I certainly don’t have a perfect gait cycle

    Hi Andy, currently using NB Propel for long runs - 10 milers - and the NB Rebel for shorter runs 5 - 10 km. have no probs knees or feet since switching away from Nike Peg 35 and Vomero 14 which gave me so many instep issues - just couldn’t get lacing right with my high instep. How do you think I would suit the Novoblast - not run in ASICS for years. Also liking your Endorphin Pro thoughts - always used to run in the Kinvara and fastwitch

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад +1

      Hey! Sounds like the foot shape of the nikes doesn’t work for you but new balance is perfect. I can switch between the new balance shoes and novablast fine and I’d say I have a medium height arch. Without trying them in it’s hard to comment but what I will say is they are soft like the propel so if you like them then these are better as they are more responsive

    Im so tempted to get this shoe after such enthusiasm. The downside for me is the 10mm drop, as I try to move to a mid-foot strike and lower drops are better for that. Now my question is, knowing it is far from a stable shoe, is it more stable than the Turbo 2? I had them and although I love’em I found out I was over pronating due to the soft Zoom-x. How would it compare with FF Blast? Thanks and until the next one.

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! I’d say you feel more of the ground in the turbo 2 because of the smaller stack height, and like you in the turbo 2 I had to retire them early with ankle pain, ankles rolling in! I much prefer this, despite people reporting instability, I don’t find it unless doing tight corners, I find the thicker midsole actually helps 🤷‍♂️ we are all different though and I know a few people don’t agree with that

    • @brunocassettari
      @brunocassettari 4 года назад

      The FOD Runner thanks a lot. Sorry to read about the reason for your Turbo retirement. It is a phenomenal shoe, but sadly didn’t work for us. I started to feel plantar f. because of the arch colapse. Would you say FF blast hardness to be in between zoom x and react (Im not a Nike lover but couldn’t find better comparison hehe). And how does it compared to 1080’s FFx? Far too many questions🤔🤔🤔

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад +2

      It is a great shoe yes, I enjoyed mine a lot! The volume of the FF blast gives me enough stability I find. The 1080 is a firmer midsole and is more stable than the novablast, not quite as cushioned and bouncy though!

    Is the Novablast a maximum cushion shoe? Do you think it would work for hiking? Im hiking in road shoes most of the time, i weigh 230 pounds and get the most mileage per dollar from road shoes also it has been really dry in my region so that road shoes work 95% of the time. Maybe you have a recommendation for a road shoe that has high durability and does not cost that much. The Novablast sounds perfect.

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  4 года назад +1

      It’s definitely is a max cushioned shoe with a big stack height and super comfy, lovely for walking in I find to be honest! I run 20 miles in these shoes and they feel great on my feet.... and at 200 miles they show minimal signs of wear and tear. The only other one I’d say would be worth looking at is the new balance 1080v10

    • @phl0w666
      @phl0w666 4 года назад +1

      As a hiker myself, I have to say that these are way, way, way too soft for hiking, or walking long distances. Especially with your weight you'll suffer from all kinds of gait issues in the long run (figuratively, not THE long run). Deep cushioned, yet very stable road shoe for heavier people, that def works for long hikes, and should be found cheap-ish would be the Brooks Glycerin 16 (17, and 18 are newer, thus more expensive).

    • @johnschmitt3083
      @johnschmitt3083 4 года назад

      @@phl0w666 Thanks, i already have some miles in it, it's the first shoe where maximum cushion really feels like it, all others just felt like normal cushion or nothing at all for my weight. One thing that the shoe fixes for me is my underpronation, it helps me roll over my big toe, which i don't do naturally, so it saves my pinky toe from blistering. But another thing happens now, i roll inward more and the side part of my outer heel is blistering up now. I don't really understand what is happening here maybe you can help me, i assume my foot wanting to roll outward where now a resistance is and the side part of the heel pushes against the shoe? I tried some running in it and it was so much fun that i started to run a little bit more, mostly just intervall sprints, the faster you run the more fun the shoe gets. But all the technique in this might not work in slow speeds, only in really steep ascends it works great.

      Btw the side blistering on the heel happend also in my Hoka Clifton 5 after big miles until i took out the soles and hiked without soles. I tried this already in the Novablast but did not work here.

      The novablast have more pop and make you want to move a bit quicker. The propel are a great shoe at keeping your pace honest and not making you want to kick on.... the novablast I struggle to run slow in! Higher stack and a bouncier more responsive ride for sure in the novablast
