Man. I have a pixel fold unopened box on my desk. I’m so tempted to switch from iPhone. Is it premium enough? Is the inner display a greasy mess or easy to keep clean? I wanted the Surface Duo to work out but it was just too unpolished and rough. It really seems that the pixel fold is the spiritual successor. It seems to very much operate in a similar way. The crease is off putting. But, if I think of it as a surface duo without a gap, maybe my OCD can accept it.
The pixel fold would need to implement stylus support more customiztion features to get me away from my fold 4. I love the form factor but im curious about the battery life with the outdsted chipset google continues to use.
Thanks for the deep explanation on how to use the split screen in various scenario. This is exactly what I wanted to know as a Duo2 and OPPO Find N owner 😊
Very useful Shane. Is there any way to stop the inner screen being a mirror of the outer screen please? At the moment you can't seem to have a different layout on the inner wide screen than the outer screen - Marques Brownlee pointed this glitch out and it is a bit weird!
@@shanecraigtech I have to say this feature makes the Pixel Fold a bit like a pimped up Surface Duo which is no bad thing possibly. I have to say that the Pixel Fold is a lot better than I was expecting. A seriously polished folding phone. Puts my Z Fold 4 to shame really. Camera is awesome ofc but feel is very like that of the Duo, which is I guess what you've been saying for a while.
Great stuff Shane. Highlighted a few things I haven't discovered on my Pixel fold yet. BTW, you should check out the behavior after folding the phone closed when you're on a split screen running two apps side by side in tablet mode. Although the phone goes into lock mode on close, it appears to remember the last active app. So for instance, if your app on the right side of the split screen was active when you closed the phone, that's the app that will come up when you unlock it folded mode. Give it a try to see if you're seeing the same thing. I'm thinking this may indicate how the future Surface Duo fold could behave to sort of replicate the current "fold back" experience of the current Duo.
For the price being 1800, is it worth that price when a lot of the apps aren't optimized to the phone yet? Compared to the z fold, where most apps are optimized to the phone for about the same price.
The same number of apps are optimized for Z Fold. They just chose an aspect ratio that is basically a large phone. Z Fold is optimized for the apps, which is short-term smart. Long term, my hope is that Google can pressure more apps to adopt tablet layouts. In the meantime, it's up to you to determine how many apps you need aren't optimized and to what degree you're bothered by that.
Hey Shane do you know how to connect to an Ethernet network on the fold? I've done it plenty of times on a Samsung but I can't seem to figure out how to do it or even if it's possible on my new pixel fold. Any tips or suggestions would be great, thanks!
This phone is amazing; however, I still find two separate screens to be more productive. I also wish I could launch an app on the right side of the screen and leave the home screen open on the left or vice versa. In any case, I am loving the phone. The camera is awesome.
I'm concerned about the dust in your inner screen, is there a gap between bezel and screen where dust is collected? I may have read inner screens are breaking down.
Google made the inner launcher "dual screen" in the sense that it functions as two launcher screens side by side, and you can't spread widgets across both screens. With that default functionality they are so so close to having the Pixel Fold function like a Duo! Wish they'd go one step further. Not that apps should open on one side by default but the inverse of the Duo. Apps by default open on both screens but with the Duo swipe function you swipe an app to one side, revealing the launcher on the other. It would make the Pixel Fold a multi-tasking beast in addition to a content consumption beast.
@@shanecraigtech Thanks, another question was thinking about getting a MAG SAFe case for Pixel fold? My son thinks not a good idea mag safe with ANDROID? Think his concern is a magnet in the case all the time? Never thought Iphone had anything special inside? Thoughts on mag safe case with Android?

@@shanecraigtechot a dent in my screen from a grain of salt, a bit bigger than regular dust but not by much. It actually punctured the screen protector on both sides but luckily didn't kill any pixels. The screen touches itself in the middle when closed, if I have the phone in a really humid area I can see matching watermarks on the middle of each side of the inner screen. Gotta be careful about sharp particles, the jerryrigeverything dust test didn't show this issue because the damage is from 1 single point vs a whole handful of dust spreading the force
Your review is making me even more excited to possibly move over from my Duo 2. You're better off just switching to Google tbh. Pixel is an established brand that's basically guaranteed to continue being supported for the foreseeable future. Microsoft has nothing... again. They ditched Duo and now they're gonna try from scratch yet again. Even if they release something next year the software will be worse than Pixel. And it will be very unlikely to be a success and turn into a reliable brand like Pixel. I'm not a Google fanboy btw 😅 I use mostly MS services
I just picked up the Motorola RAZR +. Now I gotta sell my wife on the Pixel Fold. But I'm still loving my Surface Duo 2. I might wait until the fall. Keep up the great content man!
I know it's an expensive phone but I underestimated how it looks cheap with those huge bezels next to the oppo find n2 and the z fold 4. I hope they can make those bezels even on all sides on the pixel fold 2 especially when apps like twitter and ig prefers a more potrait aspect ratio and while you can rotate it, those bezels on the pixel fold will always remind you that it's not made for portrait scrolling/viewing.
People complain that the plastic screen can be easily damaged if some dust appeared on screen when you close the screen. So add a tip how to avoid that.
People=one guy writing for ars Technica or closed his fold on an unknown object that was certainly not dust. Dust cannot leave a mark on the screen. Also, the screen is not made of plastic. Just like Samsung's phones, it used ultra thin glass.

Way less dust on the pixel fold than fold 4. I'm constantly cleaning the inner screen on the fold 4.

Can u do edge panel swipe like u can on my fold 4
Do you know if it works well to use a controller on the pixel fold because of the button setup on the side.
You wouldn't be attaching a controller in that orientation
Hoping someone does a battery drain test on the pixel fold using just the inner display
Is there a way to tether/launch two apps at the same time? Is there a dedicated button like the duo had?
Not that I'm aware of

Dust cannot damage a screen. The person who broke their display, I guarantee closed it on something much larger.

Hey Shane is there a way to remove the split screen in the settings ? Or it's default now?
If you're meaning how some apps are dual column, it's based on orientation. Rotate to revert, no way to just turn that off that I'm aware of.
