    I like how right after the "Forget About Love" song the animation changes drastically. Disney's former satellite studios in Australia and Japan animation styles are fully represented in how different they are in this movie.

      Chuck Lee I enjoy anytime Jafar is on screen. In my opinion, I thought his song on this movie was better than the first one's. mainly because he was larger than life (literally) and he showed that even Genie was second rate in comparison at this point. Other then that song the rest of the film was just decent. Part 3 was my fav even more than the first.

    Jafar's villain song "You're Only Second Rate" (or whatever the title was) is on my list of fav villain songs. Not high on the list, but as a youth the whole situation of the genie being totally outclassed and unable to be the solution to the villain for the friends that freed him because of that freeing was impactful to my young, aspiring writer brain. Even now, while the number isn't fabulous, that underlying subject matter is freakin' good stuff.

      I can see why people like the Lion King 2, but for me there's a ton of things that are wrong with it, but the main problem for me is the musical numbers: there's too much of them! Also, Simba is a complete jerk in the sequel... I know that the focus was on his daughter and Kovu but was it necessary to make Simba act so much out of character? At least the animation was very good for a sequel, and the songs weren't that bad even if there was too much of them, and it was somewhat clever to continue with a Shakespeare like story...

  • @Tetra_76
    @Tetra_76 7 лет назад +58

    The french version of this was so much better, and I still enjoy it to this day. The reason being is that all the french voice actors DID reprise their role in this. The legendary Richard Darbois as the Genie, and Féodor Atkine as Jafar, they really make the movie for me. The Genie is made really funny again, Jafar is incredibly intimidating, and even the songs get a huge update compared to the english ones, especially the one between the Genies of course. The animation still sucks obviously, but the quality dub really saved the movie, they took it as seriously as the first one, and it works great.

      Sequel and bad shouldn't be considered eponymous though imo. a sequel is just a continuation of a story (or another story following the same characters on a different adventure.) it just happens that good sequels are very hard to pull off.

  • @Wandergirl108

    The reason I'm nostalgic for this movie is a little complicated…See, my grandmother, who lived in another state, had the original Aladdin tape, but when I was home and not visiting her, I only had the two direct-to-VHS sequels. I didn't realize they were direct-to-VHS (nor did I realize that the end of this was setting up the show, thanks for that info!), but when I wanted to watch Aladdin, this was usually the only option I had on hand. As a result, I saw it way more times than the original, and the third movie as well, and so grew attached to it as a kid. Just watching the clips play in the background while NC talked got me SO nostalgic, more so than clips of the original do! It was one of my favorites…and let me tell you, the number of times I full-on burst into tears when Jafar died, I'm sure my parents didn't even keep count. Yeah, I always wanted Jafar to win…I was a weird kid…and I'm no less weird now, to be fair. XD So yeah, it might be kind of stockholm syndrome that makes me adore this movie, but I will always love it.

Anyway, I agree, My Lullaby is a better villain song, I think it is way creepier and darker... "A symphony of death, oh my, that's my lullaby!" and "...till he learns to be a killer, with a lust for being BAD!" dude... dude... creepy as all heck. I actually enjoyed Simba's Pride and Return to the Sea!! I mean, not only is the music from those two movies amazing, but we got MAJOR character development from both Simba and Arial. Simba learning to forgive those who were simply not totally to blame for the death of his father and accepting his daughter as independent and smart. For Arial we got to see her go from oblivious to understanding of her daughter's needs. A perfect way for both movies to be amazing in their own right!!

      AM Keefer I saw The Lion King 2 before the first one. It really confused me as a kid. I knew that the first movie was a thing and how the story roughly went but I never saw it until I was about 13. I think the reason was that I was born in 1994 and I was my parents' first child so they got Disney VHS tapes second-hand from my older cousins, but only the ones they didn't want anymore. As a result I had a pretty weird mix of Disney movies growing up. I got some classics like The Sword in the Stone, Fox And The Hound, Peter Pan and The Jungle Book but I never saw Robin Hood, The Lion King, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pinocchio until years later. Some, like The Great Mouse Detective, I've still never seen/would have heard of without Nostalgia Critic.

Especially coming from Jafar, being perhaps even more threatening because of this, torture is living through it, not dying from it. 2) The Second Rate song, DEAR CRAP DO I LOVE THE SECOND RATE SONG! They wanted to give Jafar a villain song in the last one (and thank the various gas they didn't put the song they WROTE for it, I hate the Freudian excuse so much, and that song just flaunts it!) so they put a lot of energy and effort into it.

      That was kind of the idea. In fact the original plan was to have it feature Mozenrath from the show and have a plot where it turned out he was Aladdin's long lost brother. But I think the guy who did his voice died before they could make it, or something.

    • @okuraorca
      @okuraorca 7 лет назад +5

      They didn't make Mozenrath for it, because the executives decided not to mix the TV series and the movies, to have them both as their own continuity. They decided that while Return can be viewed as a pilot for the TV series, it can also (sorta) stand alone from the TV series. So they decided to have th emovies and series two different things.Closest thing to the TV series in Thieves is I think one of the characters in the opening song looks like that sand witch character.

    Totally agree: Downgrade in animation really ruins it, Robin Williams is missed, Jafar is still intelligent and menacing and Iago is the focus while all the other characters are barely there and mostly stupid, bad songs (although I think Johnathan Freeman does a very good job with his mediocre song).And frankly, I don't think it does a good job with Jafar and Iago in that they never interact; it was their dynamic that really made them click in the first movie. What would have made for a better movie IMO was if Iago took over as Jafar's Master, and learned about personal responsibility by starting off with really selfish wishes but eventually destroying the lamp by learning that Jafar and the lamp are not a toy, maybe even Aladdin helping him through it since he had his own experience with responsibility while working through his own mistrust of Iago. My personal experience was CRUSHING disappointment.

    So why wasn’t he in this movie? Robin has beef with Disney after they started using the genie as a marketing scheme when he asked that they not do that. It’s a real disappointment.

    Ah I remember "The Return of Jafar." It's a pretty awkward animated film about the main villain wants to revenge Aladdin and his plan is to use his dark magic powers to rule the palace once again. The animation is pretty choppy once I saw their weird expressions that it makes me laugh so much. At least Doug pointed out that these faces were like coloring art sketches in a coloring book in Nostalgia Critic's "Disney Afternoon." Thanks for that Doug. The characters were alright and the Dark Jafar genie looks cool in his design while he is having a lot of fun. The songs were cheesy and it's quite short for making their second sequel which turns out to be a pilot episode of "Aladdin" series. It grew me watching these episodes until later on the "King of Thieves" did it more better than the second one. I don't know that I found bad, but it's pretty guilty pleasure. With a cheesy animation and some stupid awkward faces that makes me the laugh the most. Overall, a cheesy Aladdin sequel.

      yeah it was pretty interesting seeing a sequel show up as a KH inspired level, and if I'm not mistaken it's the only one?Little mermaid was a singalong and kinda a rehash of the first, nightmare before christmas had the whole christmas part to work off of since it wasn't in the 1st game, the colloseum for hercules is it's own thing since it's merged with FF too much, and...I believe that's it?

    To be fair, Lion King 2 wasn't THAT bad. I liked well enough.
    Was it unnecessary? Of course it was. Was it as good as the first movie? Of course not. Terrible though? No, not at all. Some scenes were stupid, as well as a couple plot points, but overall I liked Simba's Pride. I think the good easily outweighs the bad. Plus, it at least has quality animation.
    And it's a masterpiece compared to most of the OTHER Disney sequels.

    With that said, I'm sure we'll get it out of you, but I do think Aladdin's third movie, The King of Thieves, is a lot better than The Return of Jafar. Obviously not up to par with the first Aladdin, but still a genuinely fun movie with a neat story. And Robin Williams returns to voice the Genie in it.

      I agree with you that the Lion King 2 was one of the better sequels. While it wasn't AS epic as the Lion King, the animation was still better than most of the other sequels, the songs were catchy, and it wasn't a carbon copy of the Lion King...there was actually a really good message woven into this movie. And I am still convinced that Kovu was Scar's son....they say not, but everything in the movie (right up to him having a scar and the same coloration as Scar) makes me believe he is.

    I saw this movie after the Aladdin series started, so I saw it as a pilot episode. And I wasn't expecting it to have the greatest animation because TV shows don't have the kind of budget movies do. I just thought it was fun and Jafar again makes a great villain. I also thought Iago's song, "I'm looking out for me," was funny. I sang that so much after watching the movie.
    Besides, I never expect sequels to be as good as the originals. As long as they're enjoyable, I'm okay.

    Doug hits the nail on the head with the fact the focus is on Iago. The story is more about Iago's character than Aladdin and I think when you look at the story that way, it begins to make more sense.
    Also, this is one of the first Disney films I think that had the fact that you can be a person with bad traits, but still be a good guy. Iago comes out of it as a good character, but he doesn't have to reform and lose his ego and greedy nature. He comes to terms with the balancing of when you have to sacrifice your own things for the right decision.That being said, I do agree the story has some awkward points. I think the fact that they tried to balance it with the story of Aladdin and friends with Iago's was the major flaw. If they'd downgraded those characters and more focused on Iago's arc than balancing so much, I think this would have actually fared better.
