I love that you included the last option!! It was almost the order I read the books in (I started reading when City of Heavenly Fire came out, so The Eldest Curses weren't published yet) and I loved that way so much! 😍
This was really cool and came at the right time. I've been wanting to do a re-read so the chronological order sounds really fun, but I've only read the mortal instruments, the infernal devices, and the first book in the dark artifices so a lot is going to be new for me too. So maybe I'll do the combo. Ahhh I can't decide lol.
I'm not a big fan of The Mortal Instruments series but I love The Infernal Devices series so I kinda stop continuing this shadowhunter universe because everything is kinda overwhelming and confusing for me but I'm so intrigued with The Last Hours series, so I guess I'll go with the first option, thanks so much for this video, really helped me a lot.
okay i’m so glad you enjoyed the chronological order because i know most ppl recommend reading TMI before TID since there is more world building in that one, so i was doubting starting with TID first. i always like to read books chronologically, it really bugs me if i don’t, so now i will for sure pick up TID first :)
I am going to re-read everything today and I am going to choose your recommendation. I already know the universe and I started also with city of bones and it was a great like this! Now I am older and more books are published I choose the chronological order. It’s a great way for me to re-read the books and put some new ones in the order.
I can't express enough how much I love your video. I finish the first 3 of the mortal instruments, and I been looking for a reading order and haven't found any. Yours save my reading ❤
Somebody needs to make one of those plot summary videos for the mortal instruments series because I've given that series a try but there is no way I'll actually read six (or however many) books of it but I still want to know all the important stuff that happens😭
I know this is like 8 months later but Cari can read has two videos up going over the plot for mortal instruments and they are really good because honestly I’m in the same boat LOL
I started reading the series in 2016 when I saw the mortal instruments published as two separate trilogies in the same book in Italy where I live, then I was gifted the tales from the Shadowhunters academy and read them, then I read the infernal devices, then I went on with the last hours, finally I finished with the dark artifices. After that I went on with the codex, then I finished the Bane chronicles and now I'm currently reading the red scrolls of magic. so my reading order is all over the place!
Hahahhaha yes definitely a little out of order but nothings wrong with that at all! Especially because you started reading them so long ago when not everything was out yet
@@AvivasLibrary yeah exactly there was a minor spoiler in the last hours series for the dark artifices but not that big of a deal at all! thanks btw❤ I really enjoy your content!
I wanted to read a series and started mortal instruments because it had a nice name :). It is my first time reading series so I had no idea. Who knows that continues up to 20 and more. But still hoping to continue. Nice video and good explanation. And I'm Magnus' fan too :)😉
I think the chronical order might be for us who watched the shadowhunter tv show and can't get used to the differences yet. I watched it the second time since it came out and remember every plot.
(SPOILER) I started reading the last hour’s series just about three weeks before chain of thorns was released. I finished chain of gold and chain of iron in one week of sleepless nights, and when Cordelia left for Paris with Mathew, I felt like James waiting for her return. The absolute heart ache that I felt was….. in-explanatory, I believe I connected quite deeply with the characters.
I absolutely love this kind of videos! I'm currently reading this universe following in the Third Option which is how the author recommended it, also, I didn't know Ghosts of the Shadow Market is from Jem POV? 😭❤ i'm so excited to get to that one now
I fehlt really offended when you said that the last hours is your least favourite series. I love it and it’s one of my favourites. My least favourite series is the dark artifices, because of Julian who is like a cursed version of Clary from the mortal instruments. Cassandra Clare tried to revive the love story of Jace and Clary by switching the gender of their personalities. So Clary’s character is similar to Julian’s and Jace’s to Emma’s. But it just didn’t work and it’s really weird.
The infernal devices is the only series I’ve read through. Tried the mortal instruments but couldn’t get past city of glass. Quit shadow hunters after that but I want to read the other series and they won’t be the same experience without mortal instruments. I loved the bane chronicles though. And the newer series sound so good
Just went to a little free library and found The City of Bones, the city of glass and the City of Heavenly Fire and now I find out I have to read about 10 books before I get to them 😭 and also I two of them are hardcover with the colourful cover and one is paperback with the black and white cover 😭😭
Not me watching this after reading City of Glass as my first book due to my Dad buying it for 2£ at a flea market 😭😅 And well- now I wanna read it in order...
@@AvivasLibrary I wasn't thaaaat bad... Just asked my gf (read all the books) small questions every 3 seconds and she threw City of Bones at me and forced me to read it 🤣😭
I read The Infernal Devices years ago and absolutely loved it. I’m currently reading The Last Hours (just started the 1st book), and I’d like to read The Dark Artifices once I’m done with this trilogy, but everyone and their mother says I must read The Mortal Instruments and the novellas first, which I can’t be bothered to do. I have zero interest in TMI and don’t want to commit to 10 books of required reading just to get to the three I’m actually interested in. If I just read spoilery summaries of all TMI books, will that be enough?
It’s not extremely necessary to read tmi before TDA… especially if you never plan on reading them at all… but TDA does start to build itself up in tma and therefore they are a bit intertwined- but I think you’ll be fine with just reading TDA if that’s all you really want to read
I've debated for yeeears whether I should pick Cassandra Clare up until about 3 weeks ago when I said what the hell and did a bad thing which is ordering all the books that's out now. This is it guys, I'm diving in lol. Wish me luck! For my reading order though, I chose to do option 4 but with one more change which is reading the first 3 books of TMI first before doing TID straight, then picking up TRSoM as kind of like a refresher book before I dive back into TMI. Thank you so much for this guide! I watched a couple of vids and I found that this one made the most sense to me. Hopefully I will like it well enough to try the other reading options in the future! EDIT: got a question for anyone that can offer some insight. Should I pick up the Codex as I go through the first 3 books of TMI? Will that spoil some future stuff? I was wondering if it will give me a better grasp of the world/setting if I read the Codex simultaneously as I'm being introduced to the whole thing. If not, when do you guys think is the best time to stick it in?
I’m so happy to hear that my video made sense :) thank you very much for watching and I hope you enjoy all of her books in whichever order you choose! As for the codex, I’ve never read it and don’t know much about it but I’m pretty sure that you can read it at any moment since i thinkkkkk it’s just a book that will give you better insight on the magic and world overall
The codex is actually the scribbled over codex that Clary owns (if I'm not wrong) so the TMI gang has written commentary over some things so I'd say you better read it after finishing TMI
Child my brain is spinning but I bought CoG on a whim bc I saw a clockwork readers reading vlog and knows she loves the series. But chronologically is what I’ll probably do
My brain hurts on the way we’re supposed to read the series but thanks for the video! I love the shadowhunters so much and I was confused on how to read all of them so thank you so much!! PS: If it’s not too much to ask for, could you please make an updated version after the new series comes out or the new book in Eldest Curses. You really don’t have to. Just curious, or maybe after the last series is over. I hope I’m not asking for much!
I've read almost all of them and in publication order. Does the last hour series before or after infernal devices? Just curious since i just got the first book chains of gold and im always behind
Also, I was not even planning on reading The Eldest Curses because I prefer to read trilogies when they're completed, but is seems like it will take a long time (I started two years ago and still there's no book 3). But from what you said I understand that they take place in different years?. Would you say that The Lost Book of the White has a "satisfactory" or "closed ending"?
Yes! I like to consider them as quick stories. It’s just a side series where the main characters are Magnus and Alec, but each book has its own individual story with a beginning middle and end. It’s just a series that focuses mainly on them
If you read it chronologically there will be no other spoilers because you can’t be spoiled for something that hasn’t happened yet. I mention in order #3 and order #4 that there are some mentions of last hour characters in other books… but I don’t consider those mentions spoilers. You can rewatch order four to hear what I mean.
Being a Honduran (and anti Bezos) its really difficult to order the ones I dont have. Cause I read books in english but ITS SO HAAARDDDD and unaccesible :( I really love the universe tho
I feel like the most recent Last Hours books really spoiled The Dark Artifices. Still loved it but I was reading like "Well I guess new people shouldn't read the books chronologically anymore."
@@AvivasLibrary The main thing for me (spoilers for anyone reading) was that it revealed that Malcolm was going to be a villain and what his motivations were going to be. I guess it'd mostly just spoil the villain for the first book, so it doesn't spoil the whole trilogy. But I was still surprised reading TLH how much Cassie made it overlap with TDA, given she knows a lot of her readers read chronologically.
@@brees3 ahh yes I did notice that and I tried alluding to it when I was talking about Cassandra’s recommended order… but I personally don’t really find it to be a full spoiler because anything could have happened from the time of that book and the dark artifices, and you don’t really know until you know… you know? So it does give you hits and forshadowing, but I think it doesn’t fully spoil anything until you’ve read both and now understand the situation from all angles
It was my least favorite series from the universe by a landslide and I wouldn’t have been able to get through the whole series if I didn’t take advantage of the audiobook… and even with that it was a big struggle
The hardest part is deciding what covers to buy lol
