Claire T no, there isn’t anything important in the bane chronicles that relates to the storyline so you don’t have to red it. But, I recommend that you do because there is some really funny warlock moments (especially Ragnor Fell) and some parts relate to Clary’s parents and her backstory. Also, there is some ADORABLE malec moments at the end!
I like that way because that is how it is historically. And you get how the Institute is protected in City of Heavenly Fire. There are little references like that throughout the series. Jem and Tessa are in City of Heavenly Fire? Why did she say to read the Infernal Devices before the 6th book? I've read both The Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices and am confused.
@@claireadams2503 Yeah Jem and Tessa were at the party at the end of City of Heavenly. Emma's basically saying read the Infernal Devices first to understand who Jem and Tessa and how they were able to be at the party even though they're from the 1800s
I remember reading this exact comment before starting the Infernal Devices and: 1) I was assumed Jem was girl based on the name and thought he was a girl for the first few sentences of Clockwork Angel and immediately predicted that "she" was going to end up with Will at the end of the series and 2) I was expecting Jem and Tessa to time travel at the end of Clockwork Prince to modern day and appear in City of Heavenly Fire where the two stories basically merge and conclude into one (I was very disappointed this didn't happen but I still love the stories nonetheless)
I read City of Heavenly Fire before The Infernal Devices and I kinda regret it. I 100% wish I had read it in publication order or read TID before the last three books of TMI.
Sometimes I come back to this video to make sure I did, in fact, read these in the recommended way😂😂 idk why this video is so interesting to me even though I’ve read the books

Can I just say that I am insanely grateful I saw the first HOW TO READ THE SHADOWHUNTER CHRONICLES video because I've been wanting to read this series for YEARS!! but I never knew how. And now these books literally control my life. They have inspired me and made me into a better person. And I honestly wouldn't have read it for a long time until I saw your first video about it. So thank you for being so obsessed with this amazing series!
I read the first three Mortal Instruments back when it was still a trilogy, and then re-read them before reading the fourth, fifth, and sixth books. Then I read all of TID and went onto TDA much later (I waited until Queen of Air and Darkness was out before I read any of them because I really like marathoning series and felt for some reason felt EXTRA strong on that point with the Shadowhunter books). Once the Wicked Powers series is out and complete, I plan on making a GIANT chart and reading the entire world in exact chronology..
WHAT i was just watching your old one yesterday!!! i read city of bones with your read-a-long last year and am just now deciding to continue with the chronicles. wow we love a booktube miracle!
Clary Fairchild THEY REALLY DID CLARY DIRTY BY ERASING HER MEMORIES AND JACE WAS DEPRESSED FOR A YEAR, THE WRITERS HATE CLACE SO MUCH AND LITERALLY ONLY LISTEN TO WHAT MALEC FANS WANT AND TBH CLACE DESERVED BETTER THEY ARE THE MAIN SHIP
Watching this again and feeling so happy because it lead me to binge read all these books and fall in love with reading for the first time in my life 🥰
I started reading shadowhunters back in 2014/2015. I read all TMI books first, then TID and then when it came out CoHF. Then you know the drill, I waited for every book to come out. I am completely in love with this chronicles, with Cassie's writing... I just can't wait to know more and more stories about this world... I will be very sad when everything will be over
the shadowhunter books are coming next in my TBR, thank you for helping me to figure out in which order to read them ! Can't wait to dive in this universe for the first time !!
PRAISE JESUS I'VE NEEEDED THIS VIDEO!!!! I've had the mortal instruments on my shelf unread for literally 2 years because i was so confused about the series order but YAYYYY I can finally read them without stressing it's wrong. THANK YOU EMMA ❤️
personally, i started the mortal instrument series and it didn’t click AT ALL so instead i read the clockwork devices first then the mortal instruments then the magnus bane chronicles then the dark artifices and for me it worked perfectly in my head :)
It is April 2021 and I started reading them about a month ago. I started with TID then Chain of Gold and Chain of Iron💔 I'm currently on City of Ashes. I didn't think I would be into it but Jem stole my heart❤ now im addicted
I would honestly recommend reading them in publication order because starting with the infernal devices might take away enjoyment from the first three books in the mortal instruments given the big difference in the quality of the writing
I want to reread the completed series. So I need this. I think I want to reread by Publication Order. I love the little notes at the end. So important! Thanks Emma!
I read TMI first, all of 6 books. Then The Bane Chronicles, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and then TDA. Red Scrolls of Magic and now I have to read TID and Ghosts of the Shadow Market.
My experience was to read in publication order, which I am still doing as I’m currently reading Red Scrolls of Magic, and I totally get you with that reference. I read it earlier and was like ooooh 😮😁. Part of me is desperate for the chronicles to be finished. I’m in desperate need of a reread, especially the earlier books, and I want to do my reread in timeline order. It seems that I will have to wait several more years yet to embark on that journey.
I didn’t know they were all connected!!!! I started with Lady Midnight then Lord of Shadows then The Chronicles of Bane and now Queen of Air and Darkness!! A super strange order but I find I’m not really confused and I’m for sure enjoying all of these! I will definitely be reading the entire collection. Thanks for filling me in 🙏
I've always wanted to read this series and now I'm finally going for it. Going to try reading it in the second order you said. I'm still super confused but I'm really hoping I fall in love with this series
Definitely needed this! I started getting very confused recently about all the new releases and this cleared it up for me! I initially read the first 5 books of TMI and then all of TID and then cohf and then continued onto Lady midnight and lord of shadows but before reading qoad I am back tracking and re reading everything plus reading the bane chronicals and tales from the shadowhunter academy for the first time!
Wow, thanks for making me want to drop everything I'm currently reading and pick up these books again! I also read them in a strange order: City of Bones, City of Ashes, The Infernal Devices (all three of them), then the rest of TMI and TDA. I still haven't read the bind-ups or Red Scrolls, but I think I'll get around to those as I reread all the books before TLH comes out!
I've been shamed for starting with Lady Midnight.. but that wasn't really a choice, I went to the library and picked up a book that sounded interesting, I don't do full on research every time I want to read a book 😂 I wasn't confused at all and really enjoyed my experience. I have now read City of Bones and didn't really like it so I'm glad I found my way into this world through Lady Midnight. I also don't really mind spoilers so that helps. They even enhance my enjoyment occasionally.
XX xx yea. You can do that, but just Incase if you didn’t know Lady Midnight takes place five years after the event of city of heavenly fire which is the last book of the mortal instruments and city of bones is the first story of TMI. So you might be confused a little bit (world building) and might not get as much references but yea I understand. City of bones was the first book so I didn’t expect greatness from it. It definitely gets better.
Sun kissed_ Melanin O Oh, I didn't know that, thanks for the info :) I was always a bit sad I couldn't get into TMI because everyone else seems to love it, so hopefully i'll like Lady Midnight at least :)
I've seen your other video but i still clicked the video 😂 I read TID first and definitely didn't regret it because i had a hard time reading TMI after it. I just prefer TID over TMI 🤷🏻♀️. I'm planning on starting TDA soon 😊
Tda will fill ur heart and make u feel whole, then it will crush your spirit, soul and heart... Sorry if that sounded morbid. But its the truth. WHY LIE?
@@wx3359 I'm not totally surprised 😂 It's sounds familiar since TID was a punch in the heart. So i guess that what makes us keep reading Cassandra's books?! 😂
I really trust a person who is obsessed with these books as me. I'm really glad that you created this video for readers like me who don't know how to read this chronicles and honestly after I read The Bane Chronicles I don't know what to read next and I'm so confused because there's a ton of books that Cassandra Clare wrote. Btw I'm thinking of sending this video to my friend that doesn't even read books so I think you really did a good job on this video.
When I first read the series, I read through the mortal instruments first, then discovered TID and read those, so now I’m re-reading and starting at TID and going on like the third order :)
I'm a huge fan of the shadowhunters Chronicles... I read all of TMI first then TID then TDA the the ghost of the shadowhunter market then shadowhunter academy then the last hours... havent read anything pertaining to Magnus yet. I havent got my hand on a copy.. but I would really like to read them over in order of publication
this video actually helped me. Its my fist time reading the Shadowhunters books but I was familiar to the show. Thank you for doing this video, I think it helped a lot of people who are reading this series for the first time.
Perfect timing! I just started reading Cassandra Clare’s books lol I started with City of Bones and just finished City of Ashes :) this was so helpful thanks
all i can say is i'm SO glad that i read these books as they were coming out (i binge read up to city of fallen angels and then read as they came out from there) versus attempting to dive in right now because good LORD there are so many
In Germany Queen of air and darkness will be released in four days and ghosts of the shadowmarket will be released in october. That's way to long to wait for reading ghosts of the shadowmarket before queen of air and darkness. I finished lord of shadows yesterday and even these four days are way to long to wait before I can read on xD
I still clicked on this video as soon as I saw it, despite having read all the currently released books multiple times 😂😂😂 I LOVE CASSANDRA CLARE'S WORK SO SOOOO MUCH!!! I also love how enthusiastic you are about Shadowhunters ... as much as I am, I think!! Such a good video, Emma! Very well explained!!
I bought the Red Scrolls of Magic, and like I was pretty sure I missed a lot of references from previous books because I never read any of the Shadowhunters books until the RSOM. The RSOM introduced me to the shadowhunter series so THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO.... imma start the shadowhunter chronicles in publication order !!!
I read the first 3 mortal instruments, the infernal devices, the rest of the mortal instruments, the bane chronicles, tales from the shadowhunter academy and then the dark artifices. I've been reading them in publication order from Queen of Air and Darkness and am incredibly excited for ghosts of shadow market as I haven't read any of the novellas yet 😊 I'm also planning on reading all the books in chronological order before the wicked powers to prepare myself for it
I read in this order: Mortal instruments (full) Dark artifices (full) Infernal devices (full) I have yet to read the next books but I want to and I’m super hyped for the sequel series to the dark artifices! That cliffhanger was the worst!
I've been watching this video at least 3 times now since you uploaded it because I'm currently reading the books. Thanks for the video because it helped A LOT. I often forget which books I wanted to read next. Just finished The Bane Chronicles (I have read TID and TMI already too) and wanted to make sure what the next books I'll pick up are (I bought The Shadowhunter Academy before finishing City of Heavenly Fire and I regret reading the synopsis because of the big spoiler that was in it...loved that). Anyway, I haven't read that many spoilers so far but after I finished the Bane Chronicles yesterday I googled some Magnus and Alec scenes from TMI to re-read them and I accidentally saw so many spoilers about them.
also if anyone finds this amusing when i was reading tmi for the first time i somehow accidentally started reading city of heavenly fire before i had read city of lost souls and man, let me tell you, i was CONFUSED
Oh my gosh, I had not read the Shadowhunters Chronicles when I first saw your previous video on how to read it. Fast forward to a year later and I can say that, for me, reading them in publication order is the best way to go as you won’t risk being spoiled. Thank you Emma for making an updated version of this video. The Shadowhunters Chronicles have quickly become my favorite series of all times. It helped me get out of a really bad period and I am just so grateful to have read this series. Thank you Emma for talking about this series and for being so open about your mental health issues. You are an absolute gem. Hope you’re having an amazing day :).
My order is all of TMI(which I regret because of TID spoilers) Then TID and that’s all I have read so far but definitely will be reading all of the books.
I’ve just finished TID and have read the first 3 TMI and was wondering when to read red scrolls of Magic so this video coming out now is literally PERFECT timing !!!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤

1) I was assumed Jem was girl based on the name and thought he was a girl for the first few sentences of Clockwork Angel and immediately predicted that "she" was going to end up with Will at the end of the series and
2) I was expecting Jem and Tessa to time travel at the end of Clockwork Prince to modern day and appear in City of Heavenly Fire where the two stories basically merge and conclude into one (I was very disappointed this didn't happen but I still love the stories nonetheless)
Quarantine in March 2020...
Cassandra Clare did COVID-19
I read City of Heavenly Fire before The Infernal Devices and I kinda regret it. I 100% wish I had read it in publication order or read TID before the last three books of TMI.
Sometimes I come back to this video to make sure I did, in fact, read these in the recommended way😂😂 idk why this video is so interesting to me even though I’ve read the books
Who else clicked as soom as they saw the notification
BTW I'm a RUclipsr too!

I’ll check out your channel!!! I’m a BookTuber too 💕 I’d appreciate a view or two! 😃
THANK YOU!!! I have been wanting to tackle this series but had no idea best way to go about it. Now I just need to buy them 😅
Shelby S try used bookstores they usually have them there for good prices😁
I kind of made up my own method of reading them that I’ll share with y’all:
City of bones
City of ashes
City of glass
City of fallen angels
City of lost souls
City of heavenly fire
The Shadowhunter’s Codex
Clockwork Angel
Clockwork Prince
Clockwork Princess
Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy
Lady Midnight
Lord of Shadows
Queen of Air and Darkness
Ghosts of the Shadow Market
The Bane Chronicles
The Red Scrolls of Magic
Chain of Gold
And then the rest in publication order
Can I just say that I am insanely grateful I saw the first HOW TO READ THE SHADOWHUNTER CHRONICLES video because I've been wanting to read this series for YEARS!! but I never knew how. And now these books literally control my life. They have inspired me and made me into a better person. And I honestly wouldn't have read it for a long time until I saw your first video about it. So thank you for being so obsessed with this amazing series!
the original video is how i found your channel so this is making me weirdly nostalgic
lolita sameee
I just started the shadowhunter chronicles and you are a LIFE SAVER
Omfff yes I (for some reason) kept watching the old one over and over, thank you emma
that swiftie same!
7:43 “us basic folks” lol, I wish I can get my hands on chain of gold
its not out yet
StarFallFireBitch Queen yes I know which is why I want to get my hands on chain of gold

@@fatima....... I KKKNNOOOWWWWW WHY CAN NOONE GIVE THEM A HAPPY ENDING???????
Itsss so saddd the ending is nott happy
@@samirelasmar532 AAHHHHH IKRRRRR
Watching this again and feeling so happy because it lead me to binge read all these books and fall in love with reading for the first time in my life 🥰
No words can describe how much I needed this
I started reading shadowhunters back in 2014/2015.
How is it?!?
I LOVE SHADOWHUNTERS, despite the profile pic xd
I read TMI, TID, TDA, Shadowhunter Academy, The Bane Chronicles, then Red Scrolls :)
Because of your channel I’ve finally decided to try out the shadowhunters universe. Came to this video to figure out how to begin.
This is amazing!! I'm planning a complete reread of the entire shadowhunter chronicles!!
Me too
ME TOO! SEND HELP!
I read TMI first, all of 6 books. Then The Bane Chronicles, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and then TDA. Red Scrolls of Magic and now I have to read TID and Ghosts of the Shadow Market.
Alyssa Blunt READ TID they were SO GOOD!!! I love them so much ♡
My experience was to read in publication order, which I am still doing as I’m currently reading Red Scrolls of Magic, and I totally get you with that reference.
I initially read the first 5 books of TMI and then all of TID and then cohf and then continued onto Lady midnight and lord of shadows but before reading qoad I am back tracking and re reading everything plus reading the bane chronicals and tales from the shadowhunter academy for the first time!
aaa
skskskskks
can i just say, that it makes me so excited to see *other* people reading the shadowhunter books for the first time? idk why though??
Wow, thanks for making me want to drop everything I'm currently reading and pick up these books again! I also read them in a strange order:
City of Bones, City of Ashes, The Infernal Devices (all three of them), then the rest of TMI and TDA.
I still haven't read the bind-ups or Red Scrolls, but I think I'll get around to those as I reread all the books before TLH comes out!
0:14 I think that's the best thing I've ever seen! I don't know why...it just is.
I read the infernal devices first a few months ago and I am obsessed with the characters and plot to this day
I've been shamed for starting with Lady Midnight.. but that wasn't really a choice, I went to the library and picked up a book that sounded interesting, I don't do full on research every time I want to read a book 😂 I wasn't confused at all and really enjoyed my experience. I have now read City of Bones and didn't really like it so I'm glad I found my way into this world through Lady Midnight. I also don't really mind spoilers so that helps. They even enhance my enjoyment occasionally.
lisagna ha😂 interesting.
I didn't like City of Bones either :D I might try to pick up Lady Midnight now though :D
XX xx it’s ok, you don’t have to always like what everyone likes. Hope you like Lady Midnight. It’s really good.
I'm simple, i see the Shadowhunter Chronicles with Emma i click as fast as I can. Lots of Love Emma 💜
I've seen your other video but i still clicked the video 😂
I read TID first and definitely didn't regret it because i had a hard time reading TMI after it.
I just bought City of Bones and I see this. YAS I NEEDED THIS
When I first read the series, I read through the mortal instruments first, then discovered TID and read those, so now I’m re-reading and starting at TID and going on like the third order :)
Im SO early ! btw I watch all your videos and love you ❤️
I finished the City of Bones some days ago and loved it. I'm definitely reading the others so these video is super useful! 💛
I am literally on city of heavenly fire (loving the series so far
I bought the Red Scrolls of Magic, and like I was pretty sure I missed a lot of references from previous books because I never read any of the Shadowhunters books until the RSOM. The RSOM introduced me to the shadowhunter series so THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO.... imma start the shadowhunter chronicles in publication order !!!
WHOS EXCITED FOR THE PAPERBACK VERSION OF GHOSTS OF THE SHADOW MARKET!!!. Or more importantly LOST HOURS!!!!
Ariana Dumbledore The LAST hours..
I read the first 3 mortal instruments, the infernal devices, the rest of the mortal instruments, the bane chronicles, tales from the shadowhunter academy and then the dark artifices. I've been reading them in publication order from Queen of Air and Darkness and am incredibly excited for ghosts of shadow market as I haven't read any of the novellas yet 😊
I'm also planning on reading all the books in chronological order before the wicked powers to prepare myself for it
🖤🖤🖤
Okay so I’ve only read City of Bones and City of Ashes
I know I’m terrible 😅😅😅
Stephanie Jean it’s ok cause I’ve only read the first 4 and I feel so freaking lost and confused
Stephanie Jean I’ve only read city of bones 😬😂
City of Ashes is my absolute favorite book in the entire mortal instruments series. But the next books are better.
I will never get tired reading shadowhunter books. I will never get tired watching your shadowhunter related videos. :)
I read in this order:
Mortal instruments (full)
Dark artifices (full)
Infernal devices (full)
I have yet to read the next books but I want to and I’m super hyped for the sequel series to the dark artifices! That cliffhanger was the worst!
I’ve started reading the shadow hunters chronicles and I’m loving it. I’m currently on the infernal devices series
Does anyone remember that Magnus called baby Alec a repellent brat in the bane chronicles!? 🤣🤣
OMG he didn't!! It reminds me when Magnus started all lightwoods look the same to him in TID and I was laughing my ass off.
I'm in the middle of Clockwork Angel after reading City of Glass and I really do appreciate this!
Me too!
I only read The „Main Books“
Mortal Instruments Full
Tid Full
Tda Full
I am reading the infernal devices, but I didn’t even realize it has 2 other series when I started them 🤷♀️
I cant even commit to a trilogy jheez
Duologies intimidate me
U don't have to finish it. I don't know why people think we need to finish a series when start , u can stop whenever u like😂
This series is probably the most confusion series I have ever seen. there is so much 😭 thank you for this!
Where did u get your angelic rune necklace? 😍😍😍😍😍😍
My order is all of TMI(which I regret because of TID spoilers)
Then TID and that’s all I have read so far but definitely will be reading all of the books.
Im telling the truth, this was a awesome vid!! I mean... WHY LIE?
So far I’ve only read the mortal instruments, the infernal devices and the red scrolls of magic but definitely gonna read lady midnight soon ✨🥰
Are you going to make a spoiler full review for Red Scrolls of Magic??
Maria Chirica I’m working on it!! :)
I’ve just finished TID and have read the first 3 TMI and was wondering when to read red scrolls of Magic so this video coming out now is literally PERFECT timing !!!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤
