A wall of 6 AT-ATs, escorted by a dozen AT-TEs, with AT-STs and RTs serving as outriders and scouts, you have a nice mechanized army to beat any foe on the ground.
get rid of the shitty AT-AT's and replace them with updated AT-TE's instead and you have a mechanized unit that will rofflestomp the rebels any day of the week. the AT-ST has to limited field of view and it is way to unbalanced and easy to trip and its armor is crap, space carebears took out two with simple logs, the AT-RT has its operator to exposed, its size however makes it infinetly more stable then the AT-ST, the ST is intended for combat where the AT-AT cant go, the RT is intended for reconisence not frontline combat, so what i would do is give them some more front focused armor that is mainly intended for camofage, give it a high precision longrange swivel turret and a viewfinder with very high zoom capacity, night vision, heat vision and a few other options and use it as a long range scout and sniper support.

Look at our own history and you'll see a similar decision with the Sherman tanks. Reliable, versatile, and agile while also being cheap and easy to use. Why spend massive amounts of money developing a massive heavy walker when a couple of your standard ones, which you have millions of, will do the trick?

That’s one of the main reasons why Germany was overwhelmed, by all purposes their tanks the panther/ tiger etc where far superior much more armoured far more powerful and could take on 2//3 Allied tanks, but! I'm asking because I don't doubt what you say, it has to be there (along with the stand ins for fascists and oligopolists and corrupt republics etc). I'm not deep into the EU so I've no clue
In a way yes. But you also have to remember that the AT-AT also serves as an APC and carry troops inside. So an AT-AT is more flexible than an AT-TE in that it's an armored troop transport in addition to being an MBT.
Riceball01 Have you listened to the video? Can carry up to 20 passengers includind supply, 2 at-rt and can be refit to house a command center Can also act as artillery, got 6 anti-personal guns with no blind spot, and the main gun make use of kinetic projectiles, rendering the most commonly used armours innefective Compare that to the ATAT, two forward guns in a straight line, will take it's life to turn (thanks for the rotating neck at least) and is basically a giant "shoot at me pls" with it's size and profile In a war against real enemies that are well equipped (not 10 guys in a space schoolbus) the ATTE is way more cost effective

this vegicle here is one of my favorite from star wars, mostly dude to how much more practical it is for actual battle compared to the giant metal walking camel, the AT-AT.
It's pretty much the perfect walker, though the UT-AT did go one farther and replace the mass driver with a artillery turbolaser and add two mass driver cannons or medium laser cannons(not sure which ) to the sides and 4 anti-infantry weapon blisters to the back and give it a bomblet generator and repulsor lifts.
I find it funny in the sojourn lore that the massive system wide famine is a huge plot point, but it looks like the crew of the Guinevere have exclusive outfits with the ships logo on it. I guess style is a huge priority in the Avalon Initiative 😆
It occurs to me if they had added repulsors to the underside they could have increased overall speed and maneuverability significantly for approach to combat area... Then switched to legs for more stabilized assault role.
If the AT-Te is susceptible to land mines, it makes sense that the Empire would start using the AT-AT more. Rebels are unlikely to have the resources or military hardware to knock over something as large as an AT-AT. It's much more cost effective, and easy, for rebels to use landmines to take out an AT-TE.
It would probably be a lot less weight intensive just to add armor to the bottom of the AT-TE and make it a little bit larger to combat mines than to make it much taller, more unstable, and more reliant on advanced and expensive gyro and stabilization systems to cross rougher terrain
The trio of LAAT, AT-TE, and AT-RT is the best thing to come from the prequels, and one of my favorite sci-fi mechanized forces. But damn that windshield for a weak point.
There's one big problem with the AT-TE ; it has a massive window on the front of the vehicle's body. And as we all know, windows are structural weaknesses. Why would the designers put a massive, highly visible weak spot on the front of the vehicle, where the enemy can hit it with almost no effort? Time and again, we see AT-TEs obliterated in a single shot from anti-vehicle weapons, because the most vulnerable part of the vehicle's body is facing directly towards the enemy, like a bulls-eye on a target. The AT-TE's window should be shrunk down to a narrow slit at most, and the vehicle should rely on its sensors and fire-control systems (Or a commander looking through a periscope) to see where it's going and spot targets.
IMO it is superior to the AT-AT. It just needs a upgrade for it's main gun to keep pace with imperial walkers. I would rather be in a tank designed for war as opposed to one designed for police actions.
Upgrade the power system and it could power/fit a single barreled medium or heavy turbolaser. Might need a rework of the turret as well though if they tried installing a heavy turbolaser.
I think redesigning the lower half of the hull might be in order as well. A V shape with smooth sides would shed the blast of a land mine as they do in contemporary mine resistant vehicles. I would look at hardening the drivers position more as well. You don't need windows that big, even if they are made of transparent alloy. Move the drivers position further back into the hull and have him drive on sensors and periscopes. The front of the walker should not present any fire traps or operators to incoming fire.
“These weapons of war would be awe-inspiring, if they were not so terrifying.” Ahh, what part of the AT-TE is any of those? I do see the potential in the AT-TE but it merits a redesign stat. But if I were to chose between this and the AT-AT, I go with the former.
The republic does not have that many solders to fit inside the at te. I’d say that usually 6 troops went to the at te for transport and the at RT are mods for the at te but not all the have them.
It's such a pity that the new Star War movies do not have the Resistance having armored walkers of their own. How awesome would it be to have mech vs. mech combat which may lead to a BATTLETECH live action movie (Game of Thrones in space with giant robots)!
Ok, one thing I've never understood though was why is the gunner up top just out in the open? like could they not have given him a little armored turret to sit in?
Take the guns of the AT-AT, attach armor plating to under carriage, and increase the size of the AT-TE's legs by five feet, and you have a much better Main Battle Tank.
WHY IS THE TURRET UNARMORED? Other than that, this is an excellent design for a walker. 2 or 6 legs is usually the sweet spot for something like this, and the low center of gravity means that it's not easy to topple. The only problems I have are that it doesn't need a troop compartment or AT-RT garage, but I'm sure those are able to be modified.
Star Wars computer tech tends to be very 1970s, but it's still a very egregious design flaw. They should at least have a secondary control system in the troop compartment so that one of the embarked clones can take over if/when the poor GI Jango on turret duty gets his head shot off.
Riot Breaker There are ways of doing that, both in the real and in Star Wars, that doesn't involve leaving the gunner completey exposed from all directions but the front. For instance, they could have put him in what would have amountd to an armored bathtub or bucket, armor on all sides but open on top.
I know the AT-AT gets a lot of flack, but watching the Hoth battle, it's effective. Keeping in mind they didn't know what vehicles the rebels could field, the walkers were largely impervious to ground assault and the speeders blasters. Really the big criticism should be, where was the AT-AT's air calvelry to tie up the speeders? Ties might not work well in atmosphere, but strafing runs across the speeders attack vectors would have created a fish in barrel zone of fire while the walkers bombarded speeders and ground attackers.
They could've just incorporated some angular ventral armor plating. The armor plating wouldn't even have to be that heavy because it would redirect the bulk of the landmine's concussive force and shrapnel seems to be a nonissue in-universe. It's exactly what modern militaries do with armored personnel carriers and assault vehicles. The Empire should've stuck with this configuration and updated it with modular credits as technology advanced.
