Spacedock, thank you for your great series and I hope your Drama The Sojourn will do great, as I plan on being a regular watcher. Please continue your great work!
The Galactic Civil war was a different kind of war, and the Empire was very different from the Republic. The Tarkin Doctrine worked well for maintaining peace in a war weary galaxy where the potential threats are small and easily cowed by extreme force.
It was basically the complete reverse situation, you just don't build big fragile things when you have to deal with potential rebels, it's like hunting bunnies with a bulldozer, yes you won by making them flee, but they'll come back later with greater numbers, and you'll soon find out that the hanging cables from the engine were bitten of The Tarkin doctrine was the absolute worst thing to do, the reign through fear gave a reason to rebel, and the inability from the empire's military to be threatening proved they weren't invincible
Also you fight rebels by having mobile quick reaction forces, like Tie Defenders and Raider corvettes in large numbers, ready to respond instantly and go hunting for them and track them. Raiders go system to system, dropping probe droids and being a base for the Defenders to do patrols, as soon as they encounter rebels they signal, and if jammed they can hold their own and a Defender can even jump quickly and then call in support as soon as in hyperspace. Rebel bases become a lot more vulnerable, as does any fleet gathering. And for your static defense use gunships or flak frigates with every ISD and most importantly Interdictors in number (with protection) to blockade any rebellious region. Hell, design the standard ISD to have some Interdiction capability (not as much as a dedicated interdictor, say one generator, enough to prevent any nearby ship jumping before a tractor beam can be locked on them) so it can control traffic and prevent hit and run raids, but not so much that it sacrifices the overwhelming main firepower of the ISD, and as we all know, point defense, point defense, point defense. Or just include smaller mass produced interdictor frigates as a standard support ship. The Empire operates like a military that sends Tanks into urban combat without infantry support. A greatly simplified example of talking on irregular forces in recent history was the early post 9/11 reprisals against the Taliban. U.S. special forces operated in small mobile groups calling in fire from the Air force and did quick raids, they didn't use large unwieldy conventional forces that are easy to ambush and that kept the Taliban on the defensive. It was only through the interference of Vice President Vader that allowed the Al-Qaida leadership to escape to Pakistan (when he interfered and withheld forces blocking the escape routes in order to prepare for Iraq). There are other examples through history, but setting up inflexible fixed bases with slow clunky obvious ambushable patrols as easy targets while pissing off the locals is generally not a good strategy.
The goal is to not have rebels in the first place, and you do that by making things as visually intimidating as possible, regardless of how effective it actually is in combat. Any small insurgency that does pop up can just be dealt with by either specialized forces or sheer numbers. The problems come when people overcome that intimidation in numbers and come to realize that these things have some major flaws, at which point having mobility is key. However if you were to focus on mobility, you'll have to deal with constant attacks by rebels regardless of how ineffective they are because they are not intimidated enough to not make the attempt. Taking down a Star Destroyer requires the coordination of a lot of people, taking down a corvette requires a few lucky shots. The less teamwork required to take a thing down, the more easier it is to motivate people against it regardless of the overall effectiveness of either. People want to feel like they themselves made a difference, not that they were part of a team that made a difference. In terms of today, people talk all the time about "how are you going to fight against tanks with your guns?" without realizing that they are rather fragile machines if you know how to hit them and force them to expose their fleshy occupants. Intimidation works extremely well for placating a population until it finally doesn't.

The smarter thing to do would be to act like the Republic was still a thing, so that historians that come thousands of years later argue when the republic became an empire. It would have given the Empire more ligetamacy and lowered the threat of rebelion.
I´m pretty sure, the Tarkin-Doctrin was just invented, so the Republic could have all this good and thought-out stuff (except fleet composition) while the Empire was just incompetent beyond reason. It´s almost like someone actually thought about good vehicle-designs during the production of the prequels. (not hating on empire-assets but they are sometimes just flat-out dumb)
They were supposed to be dumb. Take the AT-AT. Big, scary, but not wholly practical, the thing was basically a walking visual metaphor for the Empire as a whole, because the original Star Wars trilogy was a criticism of Militarism and Imperialism.
If you think the tarkin doctrine was bad, check out the first order doctrine: Flat ass dreadnought with two under superlasers and bad aiming laser cannons...as well as a weak spot.
To paraphrase a quote I saw somewhere: "The AT-AT is the Empire incarnate. Big, scary, lots of firepower, great on the offense, highly durable when attacked conventionally from the front and extremely vulnerable to anything else."
Yup, the prequels just had more thought in the designs besides cool factor. Hell, LAAT is pretty much just Mi-24 Hind gunship, it just cant be impractical
You're right, the Tarkin doctrine is basically an in-universe explanation for the real world inconsistency of wanting cooler ships in the prequels than A New Hope lol
"[When planetary defenses are at full effect] The large frame of the LAAT makes them a vulnerable target and high casualties are to follow" YOU HEAR THAT ANAKIN ?
It sure lpoks like it with the buble cockpit , the troop transport capabilities and a wide weapons loadout , bouth are awesome veicles in their universes.
So interesting conversation with some guys on the subreddit the Maw installation. The change over from the LAAT to the sentinel may have actually had some practical groundings rather than simply Tarkin doctrine necessity. Because the empire effectively became an occupation force, it required that troops subduing planets would need to be able to jump from system to system with ease. The LAAT required a larger ship for transport. A sentinel doesn’t, it carries a hyperdrive and all the forces needed for an operation.
Which is why they should never abandon the Venator- star destroyer. The rebel excels at starfighter, and the Venator has so many point defense system that they could screen their fighters. Weak gun? Weak armor? WHY NOT UPGRADE IT? The Acclamator got a second version, same goes for the victory class and imperial class, so why not upgrade it ? ffs.
@@Yayaloy9 Oh, and along with that, the Venator could hold more fighters than the ISD and Victory. Sure, standard TIEs aren't the best but a very, very large swarm of them is definitely deadly
My favorite (and among the most attractive) ship within the Star Wars world. The similarity to the Soviet Mi-24 gunship is quite striking - for the good of it!
The Tarkin Doctrine was awful, the empire may have had a better chance against the rebels had they utilized a larger variety of vehicles and systems that weren't focused entirely upon mass and overwhelming firepower. The LAAT gunship would have allowed better logistical invasions and rapid deployment, the battle of hoth may have even been an overwhelming empire victory had the empire had LAAT-Cs drop ATAT Walkers right on the front lines rather than having them march from over twenty mikes away.
@@Centurian128 Good point referring back to Point Rain, one of my favorite clone war episodes. However, the rebels were poorly equipped, with their defense platforms built in anticipation of a long range attack. Everything in the Rebels defense strategy bespoke their anticipation of the long range assault of the empire. In any wartime scenario, explosive and rapid deployment often trumps even the most fortified of installations. Had the empire deployed walkers behind the base installation alongside a forward strike force, the battle for hoth would be over in minutes. With the LAATs extenisve weapon arnaments, the weaker snow speeders would have had a hard time getting near to the ATATs weak underbelly's and mobility system. While the Landing at Point Rain was disasterous, it was so due in part to the superiority of Genosian Starfighters, Heavy Artillery and a lack of intelligence on force size and numbers, none of these were present in the battle for Hoth. Probes had gathered data long before the battle began, and the only republic defense system was a massive ion cannon. Now if the rebels had employed Starfighters in the battle, the situation would be much different.
The Empire wasn't trying against the rebels because they didn't need to. The rebels weren't a threat. they were allowed to exist to justify the rampant militarism.
Actually no they wouldn't have been able to do that. The whole reason they dropped as far out as they did was because had to land outside of the rebels defense shield which blocked any and all fast moving objects from going inside of it including fighters. Not to mention deploying to close to the rebel lines would have allowed them to shoot down incoming transports with weapon emplacements, defense turrets and anti-air weaponry.
I just love the LAAT. It always reminded me of the Mi-24 Hind: Armed heavily enough to tear the enemy a new one, while still carrying enough troops to deliver a boot straight up that new one once they were on the ground.
I swear if the Empire ran things like the Republic did. The Rebellion would have been destroyed within a year. I absolutely despise the Tarkin doctrine. Emphasizing intimidation over tactical value does you no favors when faced with an enemy that will not be intimidated. Weapons of war should be made to kill men. Not intimidate children.
Draw Inspiring Agreed. The Tarkin Doctrine only works to a degree when policing populations and quelling protests and rebellions already under your own control. Absolutely useless and downright counterproductive against elements outside your control (an opposing military power). It's more a policing strategy than a military one. Two distinctly different things. One helps maintain control and order, the other helps win wars.
The Empire didn't have enemies. The y were the only galactic power, and only let the rebellion exist because they served as a convenient scapegoat and excuse for oppression.
And the Empire wasn't engaged in any war. The Rebel Alliance was a non issue kept around as an asset and never quiet allowed to become a genuine threat.
Ego Alter Yeah. Which is why the Rebels were able to successfully topple the Empire right? Because clearly, the Empire "allowed" the rebels to destroy both death stars. Because letting your enemies destroy your two most powerful, and expensive military assets is conducive to your continued success right?
Stealing the Dathstar I plans was described as the first victory the rebels managed to score in the New Hope intro text crawl. So yes, the Rebels were a non threat, and it was a combination of Imperial arrogance, incompetence and extreme luck on the side of the rebels that they manged to destroy the DSI. Remember, the OT is the tail ends of the galactic civil war, which has been raging by close to three decades by that point. I believe the battle of Yavin IV was 27 years after the founding of the Empire.
One of the things I love the most about the LAAT is not only that it was based off of the Mi-24 Hind and lives up to it in both it’s lethality and versatility
Minor correction: its based off the Mi-24(NATO reporting name “Hind”), not the Mi-28. The Mi-28(NATO reporting name “Havoc””) does exist in real life and is based off the Mi-24, but the Mi-28 is designed only for the ground attack role, and does not possess any troop carrying capability
Yeah the The Star Wars: Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles gives 28.8 meters the new star wars Databank gives 17.69 meters. Both are considered canon sources, but the Databank answer looks more accurate. Disney can't get their heads together.
I feel like the LAAT was based on the Russian Mi-24 Hind Gunship because: 1. Both are massive for their roles as troop transport AND attack Gunship 2. They are both meant to carry troops and act as a Gunship at the same time. But then I also feel like it took inspiration from American Helicopters with its massive side openings and “door gunners”.
Mi-24 as troop transport? In theory that was reasonable, but compliment taken wasn't big enough and MG manned by gunner in that compartment were better choice for CAS, leaving transport for Mi-14
On the channel of the elf tanker on RUclips there is an overview of this clone transport . But he speaks Russian, but you can enable English translation in the settings.
Wanna love it even more? Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing. Imagine 30 Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed like missiles. That is the most badass way one can deploy troops imo
Spacedock, knowing as much as you do about Star Wars capital ships, if you could design your own Destroyer, Cruiser, and Battleship what would they look like? All the ones used in Star Wars so far seem to have serious flaws.
Since the Dreadnought heavy cruiser is a thing, it would probably be a Battlestar with lasers and shields, but since Spacedock apparently isn't a fan of swiss-knife ships i am not sure about it
MCRN Donnager, but with SW technology. The "Flying Skyscraper" architecture allows to save some energy on artificial gravity (when ship is under thrust, generated acceleration is sufficient to emulate gravity) to, for instance, use those gravity emulators to compensate overloads during the maneuvers and, as a nice bonus, allows for easier damage control (since the ship is now divided not on "decks", but on "floors", it becomes easier to initiate lockdown in damaged parts). I'd use battering ram cannon with extended range and/or orbital autocannons as a part of main caliber, installed in actual battleship-grade turrets along with some kind of heavy mass driver (which fires heavy guided proton shells). Torpedoes - "Holdo"-type, with a single-use hyperdrive and experimental deflector shields for FTL ramming. Of course, CIWS will be mixed and consist of rapid-fire blasters, rotary mass drivers and homing missiles. CIC - deep inside the ship, with optic fiber periscopes serving as an emergency backup measures. Fighter hangars - both shields and blast doors, which ONLY open when launching/retrieving fighters. And - one of the most important things - *NO CONNECTION SLOTS FOR THE ASTROMECH DROIDS.* *EVER.* Those T3 and R2 units hibernate and dream to plug their dirty jacks into the sensitive systems of capital ships. We can't allow this weakness to be present at all. P.S. Nearly forgot - distributed and redudnant computer systems are must-have. They hijack one - we shut it down and run on backup. And, of course, no direct link between systems in mess hall and, for instance, FCS or launch bay control. P.P.S. I imagine, that this FTL ramming is very tricky business. You start engine too early - you jump into hyperspace without damaging the opponent. You start engine too late - and you just hit the opponent, like if you've rammed it on sublight engines only. You need to activate engine at very precise moment, so the middle of the hyperspace transition zone (when ship slips from realspace to hyperspace) intersects with the hull of hostile and the giant energy burst, capable of obliterating entire fleets (if they stay in too dense formations), occurs.
Expanse designs are in fact beyond excellent, but wouldn't they need some engine placement rework since the SW universe work under semi-newtonian physics (drag in space)? Also kinetic weaponry wasn't really researched in the SW universe, the best thing they got (to my knowledge) is the main artillery gun on the ATTE (still able to damage ships with a decent fire rate, but somewhat weak compared to other franchises) so it would need some R&D time in-universe The relativistic torpedoes are a tricky one, they in fact completely change how warfare work, and it will certainly be 99%+ successful since they got computers (nanocomponents or something like that?) able to manage hyperspace jumps, no doubt after some testing it will be easy to calibrate them so they active at the perfect range Hyperspace mines would even be possible by placing them near hyperspace lanes entrances so they ram anything their database recognize as an enemy design But this would only happen if the sequels are canon, wich shouldn't due to the amount of inconsistencies in it and render planetary shields useless, atmospheric jumps possible, and hyperspace ram meaning that any ship bigger that a shuttle would be nothing more than a target
Wanna love it even more? Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing. Imagine 30 Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed like missiles. That is the most badass way one can deploy troops imo
Made even cooler when you realize that if you slap a jetpack on the 30 odd bois in the back, you can deploy them like missiles and they can theoretically fly back to the gunship, removing the necessity for the LAAT to land to pick them up, giving the LAAT more time for CAS duties.
Wanna love it even more? Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing. Imagine 30 Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed like missiles. That is the most badass way one can deploy troops imo
What happens to the clones inside when the LAAT crashes? There's no seat for them to strap into for keeping themselves from being violently thrown around inside the LAAT when it's being shot down. My guess is that the clones use their magnetized boots to strap themselves in when they are about to crash.
To be honest, I think Tarkin got this one right along with the Venator star destroyers were poorly thought out while the LAAT transport worked well early in the clone wars by the end it was more of a dinosaur that proved ineffective at its job as it was too fragile for most combat and needed to be part of a support group hauling supplies more than troops while the venerator was supposed to be an aircraft carrier but rarely had its full fighter compliment and was used as a frontline warship a job that it never did well and should have been dedicated to other ships instead
Wanna love it even more? Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing. Imagine 30 Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed like missiles. That is the most badass way one can deploy troops imo
@@egoalter1276 with their obsession with size over mobility, intimidation over effect, and demonstrated refusal to adjust in the face of their failings? Pretty much anyone who cares to exploit it.
But the empire faced no serious militaristic threats up until the battle of Yavin. The Rebellion was a small time, unimportant footnote till then. They could barely muster a hundred snubfighters to the defence of their homebase. The largest fleet action they partook in involved maybe a single stardestroyer scale ship on their side, and they lost it.
@@egoalter1276 and yet, even after Yavin they made very few adjustments to their doctrine; continuing to go big even as the alliance adjusted their doctrine to take advantage of it. The Tarkin Doctrine continued to focus on bigger, squandering their numerical and financial superiority on a small number of large vessels rather than accelerating development on fighters and corvettes as well as plugging capability gaps such as those left by the retirement of the extremely capable LAAT and AT-TE
I can see why they were replaced: The Sentinels were better armoured, hyperdrive capable had a better carrying capacity and took up less space in the hangar. The Patrol Transports that took on the atmospheric role were smaller, more manager able and more suited to the urban policing role the Imperial Army was designed for. The LAATs were too big to dodge, poorly armoured, and too vulnerable for the close assault role they were employed in; they got a lot of clones killed before they touched the ground.
But they could drop AT-RT walkers down mid flight and could carry speeders it could deploy troops without having to actually touch down and land, provided excellent, air to ground support and were able to decimate not only infantry but vehicles as well. Were very fast and were made for dropping troops in the middle of combat and then supporting them from the air, much like modern day helicopters. As well as being able to quickly pick of troops in the middle of a battle and get away. The Lamba Shuttle was poorly armed and lacked features of the LAAT/i such as the cockpit being able to eject from the craft as a escape pod or having a medical droid to treat injured troops. Not to mention that Lamba Shuttle carried less troopers then a LAAT/i was able to carry. And the Lamba was incapable of preforming assaults or rapid deployment of troops. Lamba makes more sense only in a time of peace when you can't get harmed or shot down and you can take your time picking troops up at a base or dropping them off. LAAT/i makes more sense on a battlefield where it was built to be used. But overall as a drop ship, transport and assault craft, the LAAT/i is leagues better then the Lamba in every category except armor and speed. I guarantee you the Lamba would have been even more useless then the LAAT/i if you put the Lamba in the situations that the LAAT/is were placed in during the war.
You could unlock one of these in jedi starfighter 2, and it was the best craft in the game, sure no shields and as slow as jar jar, but point it at a target be it ground or air and there was no target, even a droed command ship that the player was never meant to kill died at the hand of my guns. Despite this I would still say the best thing about the LAAT was the guys in the back, the LAAT was just a means to get them to the fight, in style.
My only problem with the LAAT was that it seems to be capable of everything. Heavy Gunship carrying enough firepower to take out tanks and even landed frigate class starships and can also carry 30 troops into battle. I guess losing the heavy gunship capability is worth getting a nice hiperdrive and navigation computer?
The unit that inspired fear in its enemies due to its troop compliment and heavy firepower is phased out because it fails the Tarkin Doctrine (rule through Fear) in favour of an unarmed mass transport. Well done Empire
Correct. In Revenge of the Sith we even see a landed Venator on Kashyyyk in the background with the Juggernaut Turbo Tanks approaching from the vessel.
This makes it better for me: Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing that existed. 1 LAAT + 30 Jetpack Troopers = an immeasurably badass way to deploy troops imo
The "C" in the LAAT-C stands for "Carryall". I'm tempted to throw money at your patreon to hear your thoughts on ground vehicles from Command and Conquer or the Westwood Dune games.
With the curves at the front and the mix of troop capacity and firepower, like a flying tank or APC, the LAAT is reminiscent of the Mi-24 Hind Helicopter gunship. It also has a wiff of Nell, the 'hero ship' from Battle Beyond the Stars, and that ship was inspired by the female form with the curves at the front reminiscent of large breast. So it really is literally a sexy ship.
Even sexier when you realize Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing. Imagine 30 Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed like missiles. That is the most badass way one can deploy troops imo

Always loved the LAAT, such a cool looking vehicle
Can we take a moment to appreciate the LAAT's side mounted mini Death Stars
I was actually surprised you hadn't covered this ship before because it's so good.
He did briefly cover it in his 'Top 5 Dropships' video.
Fun Fact: _The Republic Gunship_ was inspired, by the real world helicopter called *The MI-24 Hind* 😃
It sure lpoks like it with the buble cockpit , the troop transport capabilities and a wide weapons loadout , bouth are awesome veicles in their universes.
This is beautiful. You've earned my sub.
Best sounding Drop gunship ever.
2nd Battle of Geonosis was one of the best Clone Wars Arcs
The Ark Trooper LAAT that assisted Fordo is GOAT
Prequel Era designs are beautiful. I just love the _LAAT._
Two words: Jetpack clones
1:33 Actually the tail gun is standard on all models even the cargo variant it's there to keep things from following.
Ego Alter
Yeah.
Battle Analysis, miss it.
I just finished a model kit from Revell this afternoon of this ship, and now this? Damn, my timing was awesome :D
You should do an accompany video about space Nam aka Umbara.
@@AliBaba-vw7mo My bad.
Favourite dropship alongside the Pelican. Love it.
Original Pelican. Obv.
I like this ship.
I would like to pilot one.
I'm Irish. So perhaps there are a few hurdles to that plan. But I'm not going to lie. That sounds pretty cool!
@@pudlordtynan919 The RAF will do then, I guess.
I'm trying to create a project of it with real technologies...trust me, i'm an engineer!
@@kingsman4628any updates?
Correction: The length of the infantry gunship is only around 17 meters. 28 meters is the length of the carrier variant.
Yeah the The Star Wars: Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles gives 28.8 meters the new star wars Databank gives 17.69 meters. Both are considered canon sources, but the Databank answer looks more accurate.
Disney can't get their heads together.
The LAAT is the legendary gunship that carried a lot of clones and Jedi in the Clone Wars.
I’ve had many good memories of flying this baby across the skies of Geonosis and Ren Var in the Clone Wars game for the gamecube.
Everybody thinks there are troopers in the wing mounted cannons, no those are automated and controlled by the gunner.
I feel like the LAAT was based on the Russian Mi-24 Hind Gunship because:
1. Both are massive for their roles as troop transport AND attack Gunship
2. They are both meant to carry troops and act as a Gunship at the same time.
But then I also feel like it took inspiration from American Helicopters with its massive side openings and “door gunners”.
Huey + Hind=LAAT
Mi-24 as troop transport? In theory that was reasonable, but compliment taken wasn't big enough and MG manned by gunner in that compartment were better choice for CAS, leaving transport for Mi-14
Kuba Król I was referring to the fact that the Hind can act as both an Attack Gunship while ferrying troops at the same time like a LAAT.
TheLegoCraftOnce I don't deny that, but it was better as CAS
Kuba Król True. I mean, the Hind can carry only 8 troops after all.
The Tarkin doctrine was basically get rid of anything that's practical and replace it with something that's intimidating but ineffective in combat.
In Star Wars: Fallen Order, you can see some of the wookies flying those Clone-era LAAT gunships against the invading Empire.
I really like the Star Wars Force Unleashed backgroundmusic. Brings back lots of good memories :)
On the channel of the elf tanker on RUclips there is an overview of this clone transport . But he speaks Russian, but you can enable English translation in the settings.
The LAAT Gunship is one of my absolute favourite vessels from the Star Wars saga, and the unique sound effects for it are amazing.
Wanna love it even more? Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing. Imagine 30 Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed like missiles. That is the most badass way one can deploy troops imo
You heard him right, Three Years. The Clone Wars was just a mere Three Years in-universe. Seems longer than that huh?
In war, the first thing lost is time.
Best fictional gunship ever. Sorry Thunderhawk and Valkyrie but this thing is just beautiful.
Laats are definitely the cooledt Star Wars ships in all of Star Wars
Spacedock, knowing as much as you do about Star Wars capital ships, if you could design your own Destroyer, Cruiser, and Battleship what would they look like? All the ones used in Star Wars so far seem to have serious flaws.
Yeah like the RSD’s Heat Sinks at the back of the ship near the engines. XD
I think they already did a video on “the perfect starfighter”, so that’d be a great followup!
Also kinetic weaponry wasn't really researched in the SW universe, the best thing they got (to my knowledge) is the main artillery gun on the ATTE (still able to damage ships with a decent fire rate, but somewhat weak compared to other franchises) so it would need some R&D time in-universe
The relativistic torpedoes are a tricky one, they in fact completely change how warfare work, and it will certainly be 99%+ successful since they got computers (nanocomponents or something like that?) able to manage hyperspace jumps, no doubt after some testing it will be easy to calibrate them so they active at the perfect range
Hyperspace mines would even be possible by placing them near hyperspace lanes entrances so they ram anything their database recognize as an enemy design
But this would only happen if the sequels are canon, wich shouldn't due to the amount of inconsistencies in it and render planetary shields useless, atmospheric jumps possible, and hyperspace ram meaning that any ship bigger that a shuttle would be nothing more than a target
Mi-24 (Russian: Миль Ми-24; NATO reporting name: Hind)
Besides the pelican-dropship from halo
The LAAT-gunship is my favourite sci-fi vehicle
I have always loved this ship, especially that it can fire sweeping beams rather than pewpew lasers
Wanna love it even more? Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing. Imagine 30 Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed like missiles. That is the most badass way one can deploy troops imo
Admit it, this is one of the coolest ships ever designed
Made even cooler when you realize that if you slap a jetpack on the 30 odd bois in the back, you can deploy them like missiles and they can theoretically fly back to the gunship, removing the necessity for the LAAT to land to pick them up, giving the LAAT more time for CAS duties.
I love this vehicle. I even made a fully functioning replica in From the Depths of the LAAT-c.
Wanna love it even more? Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing. Imagine 30 Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed like missiles. That is the most badass way one can deploy troops imo
Most scary vehicule in SWBF 2004
Also, based on The Russian Mil Mi-24 Troop Carrier Gunship :)
The LAAT is pretty much an Mi-24 put into Star Wars only with even heavier firepower and troop transport capabilities.
This ship still has my favorite sound design of all time!
my favorite ship in the starwars movies

The Tarkin Doctrine, also known as, "squandering any advantage we truly possess and look good while doing it. "
Advantage against whom?
I will absolutely agree with that. Not adjusting after Yavin was a grose miscalculation on the part of Palpateen.
The one dislike is General Grievous
Edit: Screw the Tarkin doctrine. It caused the empire to get rid of so many effective designs.
Between the LAAT, the AT-TE, and the Venator, the Republic has some of my favorite science fiction vehicles and spacecraft of all time.
"born on Kamino" starts to play in the background
I'd love to see a New Republic LAAT in one of the new movies. Imagining having LAATs drop off troops while being escorted by T-80 X-Wings.
In force unleashed 2, the rebels deploy to kamino in LAAT gunships escorted by x-wings.
The MI-35 of Star Wars
Man.. I remember using the TX-140 Tanks in the old Battlefront and some other Star Wars game that I cannot remember the name of during the PS2 Era.
it's like a smaller AC -130 and without a howitzer but I'm sure the beam turrets can pack the same punch
By far my favorite star wars vehicle.
Good one as usual!
You should do a video on the Sentinel or Lamda shuttles.
Behold the space MI-24 Hind
I wish they would continue to use this. I love this ship
Best looking gunship of all time.
I want to learn more about the Battlecruiser from StarCraft
In short - a sci-fi Mi-24. Even the similiarity is clearly visible.
Hey Spacedock love the video, do you think you could make a video about the MK-1 Starhawk? Anyhow keep up the good work!
I absolutely love this ship.
Empire military- Everyman for themselves. If one of your squad mate is down leave him until the battle is over
A Larty's engines are the most beautiful sound.
My favorite Republic ship besides the Venator
Great video on a famous gunship! What more could I possible ask for?
An animation of 30 Clone Jetpack Troopers deploying from a LAAT at speed because reasons. Have ye thought of that?
Great break down, but that's not surprising. Good job
The unit that inspired fear in its enemies due to its troop compliment and heavy firepower is phased out because it fails the Tarkin Doctrine (rule through Fear) in favour of an unarmed mass transport. Well done Empire
How did they get the juggernoughts down to a planet do we know? Land a star ship on the planet like the venator?
Yep
Correct. In Revenge of the Sith we even see a landed Venator on Kashyyyk in the background with the Juggernaut Turbo Tanks approaching from the vessel.
God this was one of my favorite ships. I had the big ass toy of this as a kid
This makes it better for me: Clone Jetpack Troopers were a thing that existed. 1 LAAT + 30 Jetpack Troopers = an immeasurably badass way to deploy troops imo
The "C" in the LAAT-C stands for "Carryall". I'm tempted to throw money at your patreon to hear your thoughts on ground vehicles from Command and Conquer or the Westwood Dune games.
the greatest gunship of every universe
The LAAT Rothanas answer to the Huey.
See you planetside!
You should do a video on the Tarkin Doctrine and whether it actually worked.
The LAAT was basically the the UH-1 or UH-60 of the GARbut with heavy lift variants
