      More like just fighter. Everywhere I look says they carry proton torpedoes but it doesn't appear as though they can be fired because there doesn't appear to be a launcher. The hole in the front is just a light and I studied the ship for hours looking for the launcher I swear it doesn't have one anywhere.

      More of a Fighter/ Attack (F/A) starship. It had heavy cannons and Proton Torpedoes so it could damage larger ships but also hold it's own against fighters in a furball.

Just wanted to cement his rule with the stupidly huge battle stations first and THEN turn his war machine to external threats, once he'd dealt with internal dissidents. So the wartime economy would've worked, since he'd be putting the galaxy into a new war. Directly contradicts his whole "we will bring peace" thing, but hey! That's what Death Stars are for! Scorpixel that’s called quantum resonance, because some forms of gas and energy in its purist form have no particle mass they exert supper frictionless motion, meaning whatever speed a thing is they will travel at the same speed, and because plasma weapons use a form of rail gun electro magnets to propel them faster they will always go faster than the ship no matter the speed.

    I don't remember where I saw this, and I haven't been able to find it since I first saw it, but when the ARC-170 came out for "Revenge of the Sith" I swear I saw a cut away of this ship that showed much of the interior of the craft was hollowed out for crew accommodations. All three of the crew pilots could descend into the cramped belly of the ship and there were fold-away cots, a fresher station (toilet} and minor accommodations such as food for extended recon patrols. The astromech always stayed socketed and thus was almost constantly on watch even when the crew was asleep. Did anyone else ever see this?

      Honestly, it seems like KDY probably would have predicted a longer lifespan for the Venator, since a battle line of ISDs, supported by VSDs and with Venators providing a large fighter screen makes a lot of sense, with all three ships able to provide overlapping broadsides and offering slightly different roles within a combined formation. But that's making some assumptions on my part about the in-service and design dates for the ISD and VSD, which I don't think have been quite canonized yet after Legends was retired under the Mickey Doctrine.

    It's obvious that 2,600 g acceleration is bonkers, but I decided to do the math on it: 2,600 g = 25,480 m/s^2, and I'll say the ARC-170 needs to maintain that acceleration for 5 minutes, similarly to afterburning fighter jets. That means the total change of velocity, aka delta-V, is 7,644,000 m/s, so if you point your ARC-170 into space and floor it until you run out of propellant, you'll get going to 2.55% of light speed.
    What sort of engine do you need to do that? I'll start by guessing the fighter's mass at 6,000 kg filled and 4,000 kg dry, roughly proportional to modern jet fighters; now I can solve the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation, which gives us an average exhaust velocity of 18,852,424 m/s, or 6.29% of light speed. The exhaust velocity in itself isn't actually that crazy; certain fission-fragment and fusion rocket concepts come close, as does The Expanse's Epstein Drive. The trouble is the ARC-170's engines have to spit 6.67 kg of propellant at that extreme velocity per second, resulting in a power requirement of 1.185 petawatts(!).
    How much is that? Well, the Rolls-Royce MT30 turboshaft engines used on the Zumwalt-class destroyer can produce 40 megawatts each, and mass 6,500 kg. We can do the job with "only" 29,625,000 of those! If a fancy space reactor can produce that much power, there's another problem. Every engine produces some waste heat, and if just 1% of this engine's waste heat is absorbed by the fighter, it will be destroyed almost instantly; that 1% is enough power to melt 4,000 kg of aluminum in about a fifth of a millisecond. Fly safe!

    I actually like the ARC-170 so much its a shame that the writers and the story didn't use these fighters more often. Y-Wings were retired and the Rebels used them. Z-95s were used but this fighter kind of got the boot. The empire used them a little bit but focused on TIEs ultimately. I kind of wished in some ways they had a later variant of this that was used as a long range fighter like the Assault Gunboat that incorporated this design concept and was used by the Empire just to a very small minor degree to reflect the Tarkin Doctrine. I can still the lineage of this design being used by an Empire that relies on short range starfighters and even spook the Rebels are not using ARCs.

      You have a point with retooling from an economic and production standpoint. But to simply dismiss Tarkin and the doctrine as clumsy is a tad shortsighted. The Death Star was the epitome of the doctrine, and had the potential to fulfill the vision it was intended to. So in thats sense, your premise is flawed. The Death Star horrified the galaxy, but it didn't encourage the Rebellion. Its destruction did. If Tarkin's doctrine had come to be fully implemented, a whole fleet of fully operational Death Stars would have probably ensured the military invincibility of the Empire forever and discouraged any overt resistance through sheer terror. The stations were also far from useless. The first Death Star's destruction was a one-in-a-million shot only made possible by the sabotage of disgruntled engineer, but if not for that correctible flaw, it was invincible and capable of wiping out capital ships instantly. The second Death Star was incomplete and its core was exposed to small fighters, but again, it was able to take out capital ships and would have been impervious to attack once completed. If Tarkin's vision had come true, with multiple battle stations lording over the galaxy, it would have simply become impossible for any act of rebellion to succeed durably. Defiance would mean the death of billions, with nothing to show for it. The galaxy would be in the Emperor's grip for many generations at least, and Palpatine did not care for lives, for galactic GDP or anything else other than his own power and darkness, so if he had to blow up even Coruscant to make a point, he would have. No planet would be safe, everyone would keep their heads down and obey. The Rebels had the help of the Force and a good amount of luck on their side, and the Imperials were very arrogant. This is all that saved the galaxy from the technological terror of the Death Stars.

    I love the ARC-170, it's probably one of my favourite strike craft of all time. There is, however, a major flaw with the design: The spacing on the laser cannons. With them so far apart, hitting an enemy fighter would be extremely difficult. The lasers could be moved closer to the hull to compensate, but this might cause some issues with heat dispersal. My solution to this problem would be mounting each laser on a rotating turret, and perhaps redesigning each cannon so that the barrel's elevation can be altered. This would allow for heat dispersal while removing a lot of blind spots, possiblt eliminating the need for the tail gun and allowing it to operate with a smaller crew. The space saved by removing the tail gun could be used for some other purpose, such as mounting a Sesimic Charge dispenser, carrying 5-6 charges. Although expensive, this would add some extra firepower to the craft and would aid it in its role as a bomber. Judging by how devastaing these charges are to asteroids, I'm sure that enemy capital ships would suffer greatly from even a single hit (Munificent-class ships might find the exposed bridge removed after a single hit if aimed correctly).
    The roles of the crew would have to be changed to allow for the increased complexity of the weapon systems. Assuming the frontal canpoy contains the pilot and the second from the front contaisn the navigator, the pilot could handle flying the craft and operating the proton torpedo tubes, as they could keep their eyes facing forward at all times. The navigator would then be tasked operating the sesimic charge pod and the laser cannons, with their original role being offloaded to the astromech droid (I don't know if this is possible in-universe, I'm just assuming that it can). This "weapons operator" role would be able to aim the craft's guns at will, possibly via a helmet-mounted display and a head-tracking system, along with a seat that allows a full 360 degrees of rotation. Identified targets could be seen "through" the craft (similar to the systems found in modern fighter craft), allowing the weapons operator to freely engage targets with as little hassile as possible. A fixed screen inside the cockpit could be used to aim the sesmic charges when flying over a suitable target. The resources that would have normally been spent on training the tail gunner could instead be spent on training the weapons operator in the new, more comlex roles.
    Well, what was originally going to be lines turned into this text wall after around 20 minutes of thinking, re-thinking, typing, and correcting what errors I could see. I guess I kinda got carried away, as I love thinking about this kind of stuff. If it turns out that I'm completely wrong, even better - I can always learn from mistakes.

    I’d love to have seen the 170 in Rebel alliance use. But I know it’s extremely crew intensive and hard craft to maintain. The 170 also seems a little under armed for its size. Only one torpedo launcher and two forward laser cannons. You would think it’d mount at least two launchers and four cannons. I love videos like this, keep up the good work.

    • @failedexperiment9073
      @failedexperiment9073 6 лет назад +4

      What wasn't mentioned about ARC's main guns is, that they can correct trajectory of the blaster bolt by few degrees. So despite they might not have as many cannons, they hit more often - the ship relies on precision instead of trigger happy firing in hope of hitting something. And than there's the tail cannon covering rear of the ship, which gives ARC big advantage over other fighters. That's a very good way to arm a fighter, if you ask me.

    • @admiraltiberius1989
      @admiraltiberius1989 6 лет назад +3

      @@failedexperiment9073 Thank you for the reply....I wouldn't call the 170 a fighter in the traditional sense. Its more like a ME-110 from World War Two. A heavy fighter that's not so good in dogfighting but is more versatile and has longer legs.

    • @DecidedlyNinja
      @DecidedlyNinja 6 лет назад +1

      It has a small number of weapons, yes, but that doesn't make it lightly-armed. Those laser cannons are massive and who's to say what sort of torpedoes it carries; they could be a much heavier type than the Y-Wing's torpedoes. I imagine that the laser cannons are dual-purpose, capable of popping snubfighters and putting precise shots through the armor on the more vulnerable parts of warships.

    • @MarkhasSteelfort
      @MarkhasSteelfort 6 лет назад

      @@DecidedlyNinja Their payload is certainly not heavier than the Y-wings. Y-Wings have two launchers with extended magazines for any kind of torpedoes plus ion cannons and taim-bak medium dual laser cannons. Arc-170 is great for clones but it's simply underwhelming compared to Y-Wing.

    • @DecidedlyNinja
      @DecidedlyNinja 6 лет назад

      @Markhas People often act like they're specific, but "laser cannon" and "torpedo launcher" in Star Wars are as vague as "cannon" and "missile launcher" in real life. There's no indication whatsoever that the ARC-170's torpedoes are the same size as the Y-Wings torpedoes, or that the two fighters' guns have the same power level. I think it makes more sense that, rather than the big, expensive ARC-170 being under-armed, it's equipped with a small number of powerful weapons. I'm not even saying it is necessarily better-armed than the Y-Wing overall.

    I love the new trilogy so far, but man...aesthetically, nothing really matches the prequels. Say what you will about Anakin, or the flanderisation of the Jedi, or excessive CGI, or sand, but visually the look of those movies was iconic and immediately recognisable as forerunners of what would come, whereas the new movies may be better made but they're still using X-Wings and TIEs and AT-ATs instead of coming up with their own stuff. And I get that it's deliberate, a metacommentary about repeating the mistakes of the past, and I think it's an idea worth exploring. But there's no design I like as much as the ARC-170 in the new movies.

Looking at ww2 fighters typicaly they had guns near the fuselage (yak and bf 109 series), and yes i know that british and american fighters had weapons in the wings but there were just so many of those. point is that it`s more eficient to put them in the nose like the y-wing or tie fighter.

    A redesigned ARC 170 could have featured a redesigned nose to hold two laser cannon (firing through it rather than under it), and a tail-mounted quad laser cannon. Either an upgraded cockpit for a single pilot, or having the co-pilot be responsible for the tail-guns would reduce the crew to two and remove the dorsal bulge. (I've also never understood why an exposed and vulnerable R2 unit is needed when an R2 'brain' could simply be fitted into the ships systems.)
